Landen laten volgens onderzoek miljarden tonnen CO2-uitstoot onvermeld

Rosneft and DeGolyer & MacNaughton Corp, as part of ?IV Eurasian Economic Forum in Verona, signed an Agreement to estimate CO2 geological storage resources at the Company’s license areas in Russia. The estimation will be completed based on methodological recommendations of SPE’s CO2 Storage Resources Management System as well as International Organization for Standardization standards.

The study will include the overall economic evaluation of CO2 use for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes and recommendations for pilot application of this method at the Company’s license areas. CO2 EOR is one of the main approaches for generating economic benefits from potential carbon storage. According to experts’ estimates, existing projects currently using this method can deliver incremental production of 8-18%.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is one of the key technologies ensuring reduction of emissions. It involves carbon capture and its subsequent injection into deep reservoirs ensuring its safe storage on a permanent basis.

Rosneft has already completed a series of independent studies on potential CO2 capture and storage projects. According to preliminary estimates, the volume of potential CO2 storage is currently estimated at 240 -1,000 bln tons, with an average estimate of around 500 bln metric tons (Gigatons). Thus, even according to the more conservative estimates, the CO2 storage may technically accommodate Russia’s CO2 emission volumes if captured for over 100 years.

EU Investing in Innovative Projects to Decarbonise Economy

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    22 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

The European Union is investing over EUR 1.1 billion into seven large-scale innovative projects under the Innovation Fund. The grants will support projects aiming to bring breakthrough technologies to the market in energy-intensive industries, hydrogen, carbon capture, use and storage, and renewable energy. The projects are located in Belgium, Italy, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden.

The seven projects were selected for funding under the first Innovation Fund call for large-scale projects, i.e. projects with total capital costs above €7.5 million. They were evaluated by independent experts for their ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional technologies and to innovate beyond the state-of-the-art while being sufficiently mature to enable their quick deployment. Other selection criteria included the projects' potential for scalability and cost effectiveness.

The selected projects cover a wide range of relevant sectors to decarbonise different parts of Europe's industry and energy sectors, such as chemicals, steel, cement, refineries, and power and heat. All projects are either already part of industrial hubs or kick-start decarbonisation clusters of interconnected industries.

Energy-intensive industries: A project in Sweden aims to entirely eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from steel production by using renewable hydrogen in Gällivare and Oxelösund. Another project, in Finland, will demonstrate two ways of producing clean hydrogen at a refinery in Porvoo, through renewable energy and by capturing CO2 and permanently storing it in the North Sea. In France, a project will capture unavoidable emissions in a cement plant and in part store the CO2 geologically in the North Sea and in part integrate it into concrete. To reduce the emissions in the production of hydrogen and chemicals, a project in Belgium will develop a complete carbon capture, transport and storage value chain in the Port of Antwerp.

Renewable energy: A project in Italy will develop an industrial-scale pilot line for the manufacture of innovative and high performance photovoltaic cells in Catania. Another project in Spain will convert non-recyclable municipal solid waste in El Morell to methanol, a key basic chemical and low-carbon fuel. Another project in Sweden will create a full-scale bioenergy carbon capture and storage facility at its existing biomass combined heat and power plant in Stockholm.

Successful projects are starting to prepare the individual grant agreements with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, the implementing body of the Fund. These are expected to be finalised in the first quarter of 2022, allowing the Commission to adopt the corresponding grant award decision and start distributing the grants.

NET Power Delivers Electricity to ERCOT Grid

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    22 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

NET Power, a clean energy company whose revolutionary technology affordably generates zero-emission electricity from natural gas, has announced that it has delivered electricity onto the ERCOT grid from its 50 MWth test facility in La Porte, Texas. This is the first time anywhere in the world this has been achieved, representing a major milestone for the energy industry.

NET Power's technology burns natural gas and uses supercritical CO2 to generate electricity while inherently capturing CO2 and has now been validated in its delivery of electricity to the grid. This industry-changing achievement demonstrates how NET Power systems can help combat climate change by generating carbon-free electricity from natural gas and is expected to accelerate the commercialization of this game-changing technology.

NET Power is working with multiple clients worldwide to develop utility-scale NET Power plants, with initial projects aiming to come online in the next five years. All CO2 captured by commercial NET Power plants will be permanently stored or utilized. NET Power projects have been publicly announced in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

NET Power's technology combusts natural gas with oxygen, instead of air, and uses supercritical carbon dioxide as a working fluid to drive a turbine instead of steam. NET Power does not produce any nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur oxides (SOX) or particulate pollution, and the remaining CO2 is pipeline-quality to either be safely stored in underground geologic formations or utilized for industrial processes. NET Power produces only electricity, liquid water, and pipeline-ready CO2, while operating at high-efficiency, comparable to conventional power plants. Toshiba supplied the combustor and turbine for the La Porte test facility and was a key partner in the demonstration of NET Power's technology.

DNV Supports Testing of Submerged CO2 Pipelines

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    06 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

Independent energy expert and assurance provider DNV is working with Wintershall Noordzee and the OTH Regensburg University of Applied Sciences to explore how existing natural gas pipelines in the southern North Sea can be used for future carbon dioxide transport. The work scope entails large-scale CO2 pipeline testing of running fracture in submerged condition, which is a world first for the energy industry, and a comparison with similar testing of the pipe in open air. The aim of the tests is to quantify the potential beneficial effect of the water surrounding the pipeline on the crack arrest behavior for a specific pipeline, and thus better define the model parameters used for different backfill types.

Further, preliminary simulation results using numerical models suggest that running fracture in pipelines transporting dense phase CO2 may be easier arrested in submerged conditions vs in air. The project initiated by Wintershall Dea AG will also aim at experimentally validating this theory.

The large-scale testing of the CO2 pipelines will take place at DNV’s Testing and Research Facility at Spadeadam in the UK. Wintershall Dea AG will provide the design of the fracture arrest test and test-set up, with guidance from OTH and DNV followed by interpretation of the results. There are currently plans for two large-scale tests to be carried out in different environments: in air and submerged in water (>5 m depth) and option for testing the pipeline buried in soil.

The project will provide validation of the effect of having the pipeline submerged in water with respect to the capability to arrest a running ductile fracture. Beyond that, the project is expected to provide very valuable input to validation of numerical models for running ductile fracture.

On behalf of its partners bp, the operator of Net Zero Teesside Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership, has awarded contracts as part of its dual Front End Engineering Design competition to two separate consortiums of engineering, carbon capture licensors, power providers and EPC contractors. The two groups will now design and submit development plans for NZT Power’s proposed power station and carbon capture plant, and NEP’s planned Teesside high pressure carbon dioxide compression and export facilities.

The two selected contractor groups are:

Technip Energies and General Electric consortium: led by Technip Energies and ?including Shell as a subcontractor for the provision of the licensed Cansolv CO2 capture technology and Balfour Beatty as the nominated construction partner.

Aker Solutions Doosan Babcock and Siemens Energy consortium: led by Aker Solutions and including Aker Carbon Capture as a subcontractor for the provision of the licensed CO2 capture technology.

The two consortiums will each deliver a comprehensive FEED package, led from their UK offices, over the next 12 months. Following the completion of the FEED process, the two consortiums will then submit Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) proposals for the execution phase. As part of the Final Investment Decision expected in 2023, a single consortium will be selected to take the project forward into construction.

The awards represent an important next step towards the proposed development of the UK’s first full-scale integrated power and carbon capture project. Investing in carbon capture, usage and storage is a key point of the UK government’s 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution, announced in November 2020.

In October 2021, the UK government selected the Northern Endurance Partnership’s East Coast Cluster as one of the first two clusters be taken forward as part of its carbon capture and storage cluster sequencing process. The Northern Endurance partnership, which bp leads as operator, will provide the common infrastructure needed to transport CO2 from emitters across the Humber and Teesside to secure offshore storage in the Endurance aquifer in the Southern North Sea.

DNV & Partners Launch CETO for Low Pressure CO2 Ship Transport

    28 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

Equinor, Shell, TotalEnergies, Gassco and classification society DNV announced the kick-off of a new JIP to develop low-pressure solutions for the transportation of CO2 by ships. The CETO, CO2 Efficient Transport via Ocean, JIP will carry out the technology qualification of a low-pressure ship design and identify solutions to scale CO2 transportation volume, while reducing the associated risks, to support the development of opportunities in CCS. CETO is funded by the project partners and GASSNOVA through the CLIMIT programme and is expected to be completed in 2023.

Today, most transport of CO2 via ship takes place at small scale and at medium pressure (15 bar at minus 28 degree Celsius, limiting the possibilities of scaling up to meet future growth in CCS. To transport CO2 safely and efficiently at industrial scale by ship, low pressure transport systems (approx. 7 bar at minus 49 degree Celsius are a potential solution, as this enables much larger tank volumes, cargo capacities and therefore reduced transportation costs. However, the industry currently has little practical experience with the transport of liquid CO2 under these conditions.

The JIP looks to build experience in low pressure transport and fill a vital knowledge gap, by examining the fundamentals of a low-pressure CO2 transport chain, including:

A LCO2 ship design, with low pressure tank and cargo handling system

    Material choice and testing

Medium scale testing and simulation of cargo handling

    Conditioning and liquefaction

Testing LCO2 behaviour at low pressure

The CETO JIP is named after Ceto, who is a primordial sea goddess in Greek mythology, and builds on an earlier project carried out by the partners that investigated the technology gaps and identified qualification activities to demonstrate that the technologies offer the required levels of operational safety and reliability.

Shell tekent deal voor lozen uitstoot Noordzeebodem
    Door THEO BESTEMAN

    in FINANCIEEL

NYK and the Knutsen Group of Norway have established a joint venture company for the commercial development of a liquefied CO2 marine transportation and storage business worldwide using the Knutsen developed technology PCO2 which allows transport of liquified CO2 at ambient temperatures. NYK and the Knutsen Group, will each hold 50% stake in the new company, which has been named Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers AS. KNCC will also build and operate low/mid pressure vessels based on other technologies.

Carbon capture, utilization and storage is an effective and necessary concept for realizing a carbon-neutral society. In this value chain, liquefied CO2 carriers play an essential role in transporting liquefied CO2 to the sites where it is stored and/or utilized. The demand for liquefied CO2 carriers is expected to grow rapidly going forward.

The Knutsen Group and NYK have an innovative approach towards using and further developing new technology to meet a carbon neutral future. Being part of the same group as the world leading operator of Shuttle tankers through Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers, KNCC will provide customers with a unique competence for advanced transport including liquefied CO2 loading and offloading onshore and offshore. Through KNCC we will combine our extensive knowledge of ship operation and management to achieve the early realization of not only small and medium-sized vessels but also large liquefied CO2 vessel operations. The establishment of this joint venture will be an important foothold for participation in the CCUS value chain.

Houston Carbon Capture & Storage Gains Momentum

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    28 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

Three additional companies have announced their support for exploring the implementation of large-scale carbon capture and storage technology in and around the Houston industrial area in Texas in US. Air Liquide, BASF and Shell are joining Calpine, Chevron, Dow, ExxonMobil, INEOS, Linde, LyondellBasell, Marathon Petroleum, NRG Energy, Phillips 66 and Valero to collectively evaluate and advance emissions reduction efforts in and around the Houston industrial area. This announcement increases the momentum for CCS and aligns with efforts to reduce emissions around the world. The 14 companies are evaluating how to use safe, proven CCS technology at Houston-area facilities that provide energy and products for modern life, including power generation and advanced manufacturing for plastics, motor fuels and packaging. In December 2021, the companies held a series of workshops at the University of Houston to discuss collaboration and activation of this important, large-scale emissions-reduction effort.

Together, these companies and others in the region could capture and safely store up to 50 million metric tons of CO2 per year by 2030 and about 100 million metric tons per year by 2040, helping to significantly reduce emissions in the Houston region.

These efforts have already gained broad support in the Houston region, including from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Harris County Commissioners’ Court, the Greater Houston Partnership and the Center for Houston’s Future. Wide-scale, affordable deployment of CCS in the Houston area will require the support of industry, communities and government. If appropriate policies and regulations are put in place, CCS could help the United States and Houston reach net-zero goals while generating new jobs and protecting existing jobs that are important to Houston’s economy. CCS could also promote long-term economic growth in Southeast Texas and beyond.

CCS is the process of capturing CO2 from industrial activities that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and injecting it into deep underground geologic formations for secure and permanent storage. CO2 from the Houston industrial area could be stored in nearby on- and offshore storage sites. An analysis of U.S Department of Energy estimates shows the storage capacity along the U.S. Gulf Coast is large enough to store about 500 billion metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to more than 130 years of industrial and power generation emissions in the United States, based on 2018 data.

CCS is one of the few proven technologies that could enable some industry sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as manufacturing and heavy industry, to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The International Energy Agency projects that CCS could mitigate up to 15% of global emissions by 2040, and the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates global decarbonization efforts could be twice as costly without the technology.
