    China's Internet giants ready to rumble

    Commentary: Google, Alibaba, and Focus Media target China advertising

    China's fundamentals have not changed despite most US-listed Chinese companies getting buffeted by subprime winds across the Pacific. With Beijing's 2008 Olympics less than a year away, every Internet company that can serve up a banner advertisement is jockeying to grab branding dollars expected to gush into China.

    Google Inc.'s (GOOG) China subsidiary plans to buy one or two Chinese companies outright and invest in four or five more Chinese companies in the next year, according to Google China president Kai-Fu Lee. Mobile search will be an area of focus for the search giant's research team. China Mobile Limited (CHL) alone has 332.4 million users. Shanghai-based mobile advertising start-up MadHouse forecasts there will be 230 million mobile Internet users in China by 2008, easily surpassing the number of fixed-line Internet users (latest official statistics had 162 million fixed-line Internet users).
    Alibaba Group now appears to have added Google to its list of companies to beat. Not content to own China's biggest online business directory, consumer-to-consumer auction site and a slew of other successful business, Alibaba has launched Alimama, an online advertising platform. Alimama allows Alibaba's 21.5 million registered members to buy and sell online advertising slots.
    Google rival Baidu Inc. (BIDU) seems to be moving to offer Internet users every service Google offers. Baidu vice-president Shen Haoyu hinted last week that a Baidu instant messaging tool -- akin to Google Talk -- could be on the table.
    Asia's biggest instant messaging provider Tencent Holdings Limited (HK:700) has some impressive statistics: its instant messaging tool QQ had 273 million active accounts in the second quarter. The company recorded 30 million peak concurrent users on July 13. This quarter Tencent will be scrambling to add sales staff to keep up with growth in its online advertising business. To date Tencent has been the only listed Chinese company to announce an increase in second quarter mobile value-added service revenue. Even as its competitors predict continued gloom Tencent noted in an earnings release that its wireless portal is generating continued usage growth.
    Out of home media network Focus Media Holding Ltd. (FMCN) is still operating under a cloud. Since July 16 the company has not made any public statements regarding a question of related party transactions that caused the company to miss a Nasdaq filing deadline. Management is not too preoccupied with the case as reports emerged last week regarding a purchase of a 70% stake in Beijing-based online game advertising specialist WonderAd for between $20 million and $40 million. WonderAd CEO Liu Yameng and four other major shareholder employees are expected to stay after the acquisition.
    Xinhua Finance Media Ltd. (XFML) was one of the worst performing stocks last week, falling more than 30% for even with Friday's 12% rally. XFML's main business is selling advertisements on behalf of several print and broadcast outlets the company has contracts with in China. Investors would do well to look at recent 13F-HR reports filed to the SEC. The holdings reports show a surprising number of brand name institutional investors holding large positions in Xinhua Finance Media. That so many funds are interested in such a volatile counter is made even more interesting by the fact that Xinhua Finance Media's largest shareholder Xinhua Finance Ltd. (JP) was the subject of negative reports associated with research managers departing Xinhua Finance Ltd. subsidiary Glass Lewis in May.

    China Mobile Limited (CHL) announced its wireless value-added services business did well in the first half when it released results last week. China Mobile grew its wireless value-added services business 35.5% to 1.92 billion Yuan ($252 million), which accounted for 25.2% of revenue at the world's biggest mobile operator.
    Back in January wireless value-added services (WVAS) provider Kongzhong Corp. (KONG) was trading at $10.15, rival Linktone Limited (LTON)was at $5.35. On Friday Kongzhong closed at $3.53, down 65% from January's high. Linktone was at $2.27, down 56% from its January high.
    On Monday each company is likely to announce its worst quarter on record. China Mobile Limited continues to play Lucy to the WVAS providers' Charlie Brown in the realm of wireless value-added services.
    China Mobile shows the third parties how they can make money and then changes the rules midquarter, whisking that football away, leaving companies with a big hole where revenue should have been. Revenue from Kongzhong's major line of business might have fallen 50% in the second quarter because China Mobile made it more difficult for subscribers to get to Kongzhong's content.
    Investors who bought into Changzhou-based solar products maker Trina Solar (TSL) back in January have more than doubled their money. Limited supplies of polysilicon, the base material for photovoltaic cells, have been a concern for Trina and its competitors. Trina claims to have signed contracts with producers that will provide 90 percent of the company's demand for 2008. Trina is expected to announce second quarter results on Thursday.

    zo je werkt daar, vertel eens.

    wat wil je weten ? Het kost mij niets, ik beleg te veel en te omvangrijk wsl waardoor het gratis is. Ik zit bij AAB Trading (ondergrens 100/m belegbaar vermogen, bellen mij minimaal 1x per week met actuele trades waar je ja of nee tegen kan zeggen), maar doe > 50% zelf. Tradebox is een fantastisch hulpmiddel met realtime koersen en info (ook TA, adviezen andere brokers en kerncijfers) maar ook om je porto zelf in te hangen en bij te houden. Zeer tevreden.

    gesloten op 41,97 met een omzet > 2 mio. Bevestigt nog eens dat realtime, met inzage orderboek, een heel handig hulpmiddel is. Ik heb deze trade overigens op jouw advies gekozen. Was het eens met je onderbouwing van de fundamentals, maar ik kan je hulpmiddelen in welke vorm dan ook bij je keuze aanraden. Ik check ze altijd, geen domme gokken meer voor mij.

    Ik ga je niet richting AAB praten, dat moet je zelf maar uitmaken, maar weet wel dat Tradebox zo ontzettend vol informatie zit dat zelfs onze TA specialist Nico Bakker niet alle functionaliteiten ervan kent. Ik heb dat meegemaakt tijdens een presentatie van hem over Tradebox.

    Dat is de makke van mijn werkgever, we zijn daar ontzettend goed in, maar schreeuwen het niet van de daken. Op gebied van beleggen, en dan gaat het over mijn eigen centen dus objectief, kan ik niet anders zeggen dan : TOP ! Wat de goegemeente ook beweert.

    ik ken iemand die met Bloomberg werkt ( geabonneerd ) dat systeem heeft ook schitterende toepassingen, ik heb eens een kleine demonstratie gekregen, 80% begreep ik amper.

    't is alleszins extreem tijdslurpend om het te leren is mijn gedacht een full time job.
