Van Oord Installs Deutsche Bucht Inter Array Cables Van Oord has installed more than 40 kilometres of inter array cables for the 269 MW Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm. These cables form the connection between the turbines and the offshore substation and enable smooth dispatch and transfer of electricity to the mainland. Every offshore wind park has a unique cable design. For the Deutsche Bucht project, Van Oord’s cable laying vessel Nexus installed a smart web of cables at 40 metres water depth. The inter array grid was designed to guarantee reliable and safe transmission of the generated electricity. The vessel installed at a rate of up to three cables per 24 hours. To protect the cables, Van Oord’s trencher Dig-It has now been deployed to bury the previously laid cables to the required depth of 1.5 metres below the seabed. The remote-controlled trencher uses the jetting module. By injecting a high water flow, the soil is liquified enabling lowering of the cable. In the meantime, Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Aeolus started turbine installation. Each turbine has three 80-metre rotor blades and a rated output of 8.4 MW. Commissioning of the wind farm is expected to take place in the second half of 2019. Source : Strategic Research Institute

Van Oord and Mammoet Enter Into Promising Cooperation With Scale-Up Verton Van Oord and Mammoet are joining forces in a partnership with the promising scale-up Verton to develop a new lifting method for installing wind turbine blades. The company was scouted via the maritime innovation platform PortXL. By sharing knowledge and expertise, international marine contractor Van Oord, heavy lifting and transport specialist Mammoet and Australian tech company Verton, are developing a way to shorten the installation cycle times and make installation safer for operators. Verton has developed a remote rotating device that uses gyroscopic modules to rotate a suspended load. A new concept has been developed in which this unit is integrated into a lifting yoke for installing wind turbine blades. ‘The system allows operators to rotate and install heavy loads without using tag lines. Not only is this safer for operators, but it also shortens the installation cycle times’, Says Wouter de Wildt, mentor from Van Oord. Both Van Oord and Mammoet have committed to engage in the first of three phases of the development. The first phase is the kick-off phase, to have the technical assessment and requirements made up. Turbine supplier Vestas will be knowledge partner in this development. Vestas will provide the project partners with the technical information and expertise required for the development of the new product. Mr Jacques Stoof, Director Market Development and Innovations Mammoet of said that “We are pleased to collaborate with other organisations in the same field, so we can jointly develop new tools and equipment to help the world of renewable energy to work safer and more efficiently.” Source : Strategic Research Institute

DEME Completes Elia’s Modular Offshore Grid Subsea Export Cable Installation Well Ahead of Schedule DEME said that it has successfully completed the installation of 85 km of subsea export cable for Elia’s Modular Offshore Grid, deploying the state-of-the-art cable installation vessel ‘Living Stone’. The cable connects Elia’s Offshore Switch Yard to the shore station Stevin at Zeebrugge, as well as the Rentel wind farm Offshore Substation. ‘Living Stone’ collected the cable at the manufacturer Hellenic Cable in Greece , transported it to the site in Belgium and performed a flawless cable installation, offshore jointing and four pull-ins. With the innovative cable installation system on board of ‘Living Stone’, works have been completed in record time and well ahead of schedule. The unique dual-lane cable installation system, consisting of two cable highways - can install one cable while the next cable can be simultaneously prepared on deck, including the installation of the cable protection system. Mr Marco Kanaar, Project Director at DEME Offshore, said that “This is again a very successful job executed by the ‘Living Stone’. It was great to see all plans worked out without any set back. Usually with a new, complex vessel such as the ‘Living Stone’ you might expect some teething problems, however it was great to see that our crew had already ironed out any potential issues beforehand. Definitely the great team spirit between our marine crew and project team and certainly the constructive approach from our client Elia have been instrumental to the success.” Tom Pietercil, Project Director at Elia, said that “The MOG plays an essential role in the transition towards more renewable energy. We are especially proud that Elia can act as a pioneer in this regard. The project has been completed in record time: the first agreements were made with the authorities in March 2016, and the MOG will be operational this September. This is the result of good cooperation between all partners in the project.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Northwester 2 Construction Works At Sea Kicked Off Construction works for the seventh offshore wind farm off the Belgian coast have started. Developer Parkwind and marine contractor Jan De Nul Group announce that offshore seabed preparation works have commenced for the 219 MW offshore wind farm Northwester 2. The Northwester 2 wind farm will count 23 V164-9.5MW MHI Vestas Offshore Wind turbines and will be the first project to ever install this model. The turbines on monopile foundations will link through an offshore high voltage station to Elia’s Offshore Switch Yard (OSY) to export its electricity. As of 2020, the Northwester 2 wind farm will power approximately 220,000 households in Belgium. The Northwester 2 project will introduce a new design for the external access platforms on the foundations: the box platform. The platform has an innovative design developed and patented by Parkwind that consists only of steel plate material. Jan De Nul Group has just finished the offshore scour protection works on the different wind turbine locations. At each location, Jan De Nul Group’s subsea rock installation vessel Simon Stevin has installed a 32 m diameter wide and 700 mm thick rock layer to stabilize the seabed around the foundation. Jan De Nul Group is now gearing up to install the first foundation in the coming days. The monopile foundations for the wind turbines will be hammered directly through the rock layer into the seabed. Jan De Nul Installs All 3 Export Cables on Formosa 1 Phase 2 Jan De Nul Group announced that its cable laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh has successfully installed the three export cables on the 120MW Formosa 1 Phase 2 wind farm in Taiwan. As part of Jan De Nul Group’s EPCI contract for building of the overall Balance of Plant, Jan De Nul Group mobilised its Cable Laying Vessel Willem de Vlamingh to install the 17 inter array and 3 export cables. These three export cables have been successfully installed within one week. Thanks to its shallow draft design, the Willem de Vlamingh was able to position in water depths of not more than 7 metres, thus limiting the shore pull distance to around 1,750 metres. At the beach landing, the cables have been pulled through three HDD ducts into the transition joint bays. The Willem de Vlamingh is also acting as Trenching Support Vessel for the jet-trenching of both the export as well as the inter array cables. For the installation of the export cables, Jan De Nul Group relied on its local supply chain network for the performance of the beach pull assistance works including installation of the HDD ducts, dive support and supply and operation of the support vessels. The wind farm is owned by Formosa I Wind Power Co. Ltd., a partnership of Orsted (35%), JERA (32.5%), Macquarie Capital (25%) and Swancor Holding (7.5%). The offshore wind farm is located around six kilometres off the west coast of the Miaoli district in the Taiwan Strait, with water depths ranging between 15 and 30 metres. The original demonstrator project, comprising two wind turbines with a total capacity of 8MW, is currently being extended. This second phase will add 20 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 120MW to Formosa 1's current 8MW capacity. Formosa 1 will be the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Taiwan before 2020. Source : Strategic Research Institute

Van Oord & Shell Testing Biofuel for Vessels Together with Shell, Van Oord is testing the use of biofuel on its fleet. The biofuel reduces CO2 emissions by more than 40% compared with conventional marine fuel. This test fits in with the ambitions of both parties to reduce the CO2 emissions in the maritime industry. The first pilot will take place during a dredging project in Germany on Van Oord's trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 316. We are very proud of this collaboration with Van Oord. Biofuels are one of the solutions for shipping that can be implemented in the short and medium term. Biofuels can be blended with conventional fuels without the need for major technical modifications to the engines. Partners such as Van Oord have the technical expertise to monitor and supervise such pilots effectively. The shipping industry is being faced by major sustainability challenges. By 2050, global shipping will have to emit an average of 50% less CO2 than in 2008. In addition, Van Oord has signed the Green Deal with the aim of achieving a 70% reduction by 2050 compared with 2008. That's why Van Oord and Shell are working together to reduce emissions from vessels. Both parties have signed an agreement to carry out a large-scale biofuel pilot. Following the pilot, the possibility of using biofuels on other vessels will also be examined. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE
