    23 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

ACEN, the listed energy platform of the Ayala Group, together with its partner AMI Renewables, have reached commercial operations for its 252 MW wind farm in Quang Binh, Vietnam. The wind farm is one of the largest in Vietnam, expected to produce 648 GWh per year, enough to power 270,000 homes and help avoid 580,000 tons of CO2 annually. Its wind turbines stand at 145 meters in hub height, which allows the optimization of wind energy production.

This is the third joint project of ACEN and AMI Renewables following the 50 MW Khanh Hoa and 30 MW Dak Lak solar farms which started operations in 2019, and have since been contributing to Vietnam’s clean energy supply. The joint venture company also recently announced its plan for a pilot battery energy storage system in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam.

Offshore wind is gaining momentum in Taiwan, where nine gigawatts of offshore wind capacity is due to be auctioned over the next three years. Against this backdrop RWE and Asia Cement Corporation intend to expand their existing strategic partnership to jointly drive the growth of offshore wind in Taiwan and the country’s transition from imported fossils fuels to home grown renewables.

The partners intend to jointly develop new offshore wind projects off the west coast of Taiwan - in the county waters of Hsinchu, Taichung and Changhua. Some of the sites are in water depths that are suitable for floating offshore wind, allowing RWE to apply its international experiences gained from three full-size floating demonstrator projects. This perfectly complements the local expertise and market know-how of ACC. RWE, which opened its office in Taiwan in 2018, and ACC is already collaborating successfully in the development of the Chu Feng offshore wind project, that has a planned installed capacity of up to 448 megawatts.

Kajima Corporation and Van Oord have been selected as the preferred Balance of Plant contractors for three offshore wind projects in Japan. Kajima Corporation, founded in 1840 is one of the largest and leading construction companies in Japan. Kajima Corporation has an extensive track record in marine construction work, as well as over 30 years of experience in building onshore wind farms. For Van Oord, it is the first contract of this size in Japan.

In December 2021 the Government of Japan selected three consortiums, all led by Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Solutions, as the operators for three offshore wind power projects in Akita, northern Japan, and Chiba, near Tokyo. These are the wind farm near Choshi in Chiba (391 MW), the wind project (479 MW) off the coast of Noshiro, Mitane and Oga in Akita and the project off the coast of Yurihonjo in Akita (819 MW). Yurihonjo will be the largest wind farm in Japan. Execution of this portfolio of projects will take place over several years and is expected to start in the second half of this decade.

Kajima and Van Oord have been supporting the three consortiums in developing the projects and will continue doing so. By joining forces with Kajima, Van Oord aims to contribute to the successful development of offshore wind as a sustainable energy source for Japanese society. These three Balance of Plant projects (providing all supporting components and auxiliary systems other than the wind turbines) will further strengthen Van Oord’s long term presence in the growing offshore wind market in Asia.

Eurus Energy Group has recently completed reconstruction of Eurus Tomamae Wind Farm (total output capacity of 20MW) in Tomamae-cho, Hokkaido, which resumed commercial operation on March 1st, 2022. The project was the Group’s first commercial wind farm in Japan when it originally began commercial operation in November 1999.

This facility was also the first large-scale wind power plant referred to as a “wind farm” in Japan, and was a milestone leading in to the expansion of renewable energy in Japan. However, after reaching its 20 year planned operation life, , commercial operation was temporarily terminated in March 2020 to undergo a complete renewal of its wind turbine generators, administration building, and other facilities in order to continue to effectively utilize abundant wind resources and contribute to the revitalization of the community. The reconstruction activities commenced in October 2020.

Prior to the replacement, the wind farm consisted of 19 wind turbines with capacity of 1MW each, and one of capacity 2MW, for a total of 20 turbines. They have been replaced by five General Electric 4.2MW wind turbines, which are one of the largest models to be installed in Japan.

With the new models in place, the amount of electricity generated is expected to be approximately 20% higher than before the replacement.

All electricity generated will continue to be sold to the Hokkaido Electric Power Network, Inc., supplying the equivalent of electricity requirement of approximately 14,000 average households.
