Rio Tinto Opens Technologically Advanced Gudai-Darri Iron Ore Mine

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    29 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

Pilbara Traditional Owners, the Banjima People & Western Australia’s Minister for Mines& Petroleum Energy Mr Bill Johnston joined Rio Tinto employees as well as valued partners and suppliers to celebrate the official opening of Gudai-Darri, Rio Tinto’s most technologically advanced mine. The mine’s footprint also extends to Yinjibarndi country where a section of the new 166-kilometre rail line was constructed.

Since development commenced in April 2019, more than 14 million work hours have culminated in the delivery of Rio Tinto’s 17th and most technologically advanced iron ore mine in the Pilbara. Development of the mine supported more than 3,000 jobs during the construction and design phase with the operation requiring around 600 permanent roles.

To optimise mine safety and drive productivity, Gudai-Darri features an unprecedented deployment of technology, much of it industry-leading. This includes the use of robotics for the ore sampling laboratory as well as for distribution of parts in the new workshop.

From autonomous trucks, trains and drills, standard across many Rio Tinto mines in the Pilbara, to a full digital replica of the processing plant which allows teams to monitor and respond to data collected from the plant. The same digital asset data is used to provide a feature rich, interactive 3D environment for virtual reality training. These autonomous assets are monitored remotely from Rio Tinto’s Operations Centre 1,500 kilometers away in Perth.

With an expected life of more than 40 years and an annual capacity of 43 million tonnes, Gudai-Darri will underpin future production of Rio Tinto’s Pilbara Blend product. It’s expected to increase iron ore production volumes and improve product mix from the Pilbara from the second half of this year. The mine is expected to reach capacity in 2023.

Gudai-Darri has 23 CAT 793F autonomous haul trucks and three CAT MD6310 autonomous drills. The trucks implement real-time ore tracking using sensors to provide live dig face progression, while data-informed modelling from the drills helps to build more accurate assessments of existing ground conditions and improve safety. In collaboration with Caterpillar, Rio Tinto is advancing the development of zero-emissions autonomous haul trucks. Once development is complete, it is anticipated the world’s first operational deployment of Caterpillar 793 zero-emissions autonomous haul trucks will be at Gudai-Darri.

The new vehicles, developed in partnership with Caterpillar, are primarily used for dust suppression on site, enhancing productivity by enabling mine operations to digitally track water consumption and reduce waste. The vehicle’s intelligent on-board system detects dry and dusty conditions on site, triggering the application of water to roads to keep them in good condition.

Fully operational in June 2019, AutoHaul was the world’s first fully autonomous long distance, heavy-haul rail network. The autonomous train is monitored remotely by operators from our Operations Centre in Perth more than 1,500 kilometres away.

Traditionally reclaimer maintenance requires a prolonged shutdown while several components are removed. This patented world first will enable the entire bucket wheel module to be changed out for maintenance, improving safety and efficiency

The Gudai-Darri laboratory is fully automated and integrated with our mine. Production samples (both lump and fines) enter the lab via a conveyer from the sample station and will be transferred to the automated production cell by a robot.

Vale to Switch to Natural Gas for Iron Ore Pelletizing in 2024

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    04 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

Brazilian mining giant Vale has entered into a contract to enable the supply of natural gas to the São Luís Plant in Maranhão, starting in 2024, thus consolidating the use of this fuel in all its pellet plants. The initiative contributes to the goal of reducing its direct and indirect carbon emissions by 33% by 2030. In addition to São Luís, the company operates pellet plants in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Sohar in Oman. With the contracts signed on Thursday with Eneva, a supplier of natural gas, and Companhia Maranhense de Gás, the distributor that will take the fuel to the plant, the São Luís plant will stop using fuel oil in its furnace, with an estimated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, as a result of the exchange, of up to 28%.

This initiative will additionally represent a reduction in fuel costs, considering that natural gas is cheaper than fuel oil. Another relevant aspect is that the recent regulation implemented by the gas law, as part of the sector’s unbundling movement, makes it possible for this contract to be carried out within the scope of the Free Market. This action, therefore, signals adherence to the national movement to open up the natural gas market, which advocates a more dynamic and competitive environment.

The contracting of natural gas also brings an important social bias to Maranhão. This is because it is part of Vale’s Share Program, which provides for social investments by the supply chain, creating an integrated network committed to sustainable socio-economic development in the region. The initiative is in line with the company’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda, aimed at communities and promoting social progress in the locations where it operates.

Distributor Gasmar will implement an unprecedented natural gas distribution network in the state of Maranhão, connecting the port of Itaqui to the company's area, in the Itaqui-Bacanga region. The new network can create conditions for the use of gas by other industries and segments in the region. The supply is expected to start in 2024.

Urgent Action to Halt Emerging Deep-Sea Mining Industry

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    04 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

As resistance to the emerging destructive deep-sea mining industry continues to skyrocket in Lisbon last week at the UN Ocean Conference, French President Mr Emmanuel Macron has called for a stop to mining in the high seas. Speaking at an official conference side event held at the Lisbon Oceanarium, President Mr Macron said “We have to create the legal framework to stop high seas mining and not to allow new activities that endanger ecosystems.”

Throughout the week at the UN Ocean Conference, the controversial issue of deep-sea mining has been high on the agenda with politicians, youth groups, scientists and civil society all called to defend the deep and stop the nascent industry in its tracks.

Earlier last week, Palau spearheaded a new Alliance of Countries Calling for a Deep-Sea Mining Moratorium with Fiji and Samoa joining the call. French MEP Marie Toussaint also launched a new Global Parliamentary Declaration Calling for a Moratorium on Deep Seabed Mining on behalf of the group, Parliamentarians for Global Action, with 102 signatories across 37 countries.

Scientists continue to raise the alarm that if the industry were to go ahead, it would result in an irreversible loss of biodiversity and could threaten critical carbon stocks, potential medicines and fisheries for species such as tuna. As the backlash surrounding the destructive industry builds, so do concerns that the International Seabed Authority, the body charged with regulating the emerging industry, is not transparent or fit for purpose. It is now vital that the frontrunners of this political movement take the moratorium call to the International Seabed Authority and other international fora as the year goes on. The world is watching.

    Published on :
    07 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

Rio Tinto, in partnership with Corona Canada, has launched Canada’s first specially-marked, low carbon beverage can, manufactured by Ball Corporation. The cans, now available through a pilot in Ontario, were made using aluminium from Rio Tinto and leveraging ELYSISTM technology. As part of this limited release, 1.2 million cans were produced with a QR code to inspire consumers to learn more about the cans’ low carbon footprint. The cans are now available through LCBO and select grocery stores in Ontario, while supplies last.

This pilot is a step towards putting a fully traceable beverage can in the hands of consumers. In the future, Rio Tinto will leverage insights from its START initiative to allow consumers to use QR codes to see exactly how their products were made from mine to market, including sustainability data.

Currently, around 70 per cent of the aluminium used in cans produced in North America is made with recycled aluminium. Pairing this recycled metal with Rio Tinto’s low-carbon aluminium, made with renewable hydropower, and metal produced using the direct greenhouse gas emissions free ELYSISTM smelting technology reduces carbon emissions by more than 30%.

This launch builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2020 between Rio Tinto and Corona Canada’s parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev, to work with supply chain partners to bring AB InBev products to market in cans made from aluminium that meets industry-leading sustainability standards.

ELYSIS is a technology company created through a partnership between aluminium industry leaders Rio Tinto and Alcoa, with support from Apple and the governments of Canada and Quebec. ELYSIS is scaling up a revolutionary technology that enables the production of metal without direct carbon dioxide emissions during the aluminium smelting process, instead emitting pure oxygen. The technology uses inert anodes to replace the carbon anodes traditionally used during electrolysis, the process used to make primary aluminium.

Vale Advances Project to Adopt Low-Carbon Fuels in Shipping

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    07 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

Vale has achieved a major advance in the adoption of alternative, lower-carbon fuels for shipping. A pioneering project developed by the company resulting in a design to incorporate multi-fuel tanks on iron ore carriers has received an Approval in Principle from the leading Classification Society DNV. The independent assessment performed by DNV verifies the technical feasibility of the design, and indicates that based on this system, developed in partnership with Norwegian companies Brevik Engineering AS and Passer Marine, vessels chartered by the mining company could be adapted to store fuels as liquefied natural gas, methanol and ammonia in the future.

The multi-fuel tank design is part of the Ecoshipping program, developed by Vale to adopt new technologies and renew its fleet with the aim of reducing carbon emissions from shipping. A preliminary study for ships of the Guaibamax category estimates that emissions reductions can range from 40% to 80% when powered by methanol and ammonia, or up to 23% in the case of LNG.

Currently, dozens of second-generation VLOCs (Very Large Ore Carriers) already in operation, with 400 and 325 thousand tons of capacity, have been designed for future installation of an LNG system, including an under-deck compartment to receive a tank with capacity for the entire voyage. Having received the AIP for the multi-fuel tank design, a pilot project will be developed in the coming months for the implementation of this system on a Guaibamax.

Guinea Orders Rio Tinto to Halt Work on Simandou Iron Ore Mine

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    11 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

Guinea’s ruling junta, which took power in a coup in September, has become increasingly impatient with Rio Tinto and other companies involved in the Simandou project. Guinea’s Mines Minister Mr Moussa Magassouba recently wrote to Rio Tinto and China backed SMB Winning Consortium, directing them to stop all work related to Simandou. The letter from the nation’s military rulers said the companies have shown an unacceptable lack of willingness to agree on a joint venture for funding the project’s transport infrastructure.

In March, it halted construction works on the mine and forced Rio Tinto and the SMB-Winning Consortium to establish a framework for the project’s infrastructure including a 670-kilometre railway line and a port.

The government’s intervention adds to doubts surrounding the timeline for developing Simandou, which is considered the world’s biggest untapped resource of the steel-making ingredient iron ore.

Rio Tinto has a 45% stake in a consortium that owns two of Simandou’s iron ore tenements. The SMB-Winning Consortium, made up mostly of Chinese entities, owns the other two.

Simandou is among the world's largest undeveloped, rich deposits of iron ore--the main ingredient in steel and has the potential to reshape the global market, which has long been dominated by exports from Australia and Brazil.

Pilbara operations produced 78.6 million tonnes (100% basis) in the second quarter, 4% higher than the second quarter of 2021. While significantly higher than average rainfall in May impacted mine production, continued focus on mine pit health and commissioning of Gudai-Darri supported a stronger second quarter. Shipments were 79.9 million tonnes (100% basis), 5% higher than the second quarter of 2021. Full year shipments guidance remains unchanged at 320 to 335 million tonnes.

Bauxite production of 14.1 million tonnes was 3% higher than the second quarter of 2021 due to strong operational performance at Weipa as a result of improved plant reliability at Amrun.

Aluminium production of 0.7 million tonnes was 10% lower than the second quarter of 2021 due to reduced capacity at our Kitimat smelter in British Columbia following the strike which commenced in July 2021. A controlled restart began at the end of the second quarter of 2022 with ramp-up progressing subject to plant stability. Production at Boyne smelter in Queensland was impacted due to process instability following COVID-19 related unplanned absences. Production has been stabilised and the cells that have been taken offline are being ramped up over the next 12 months. All of our other smelters continued to have stable performance. Guidance has been lowered to 3.0 to 3.1 million tonnes (previously 3.1 to 3.2 million tonnes).

Mined copper production of 126 thousand tonnes was 9% higher than the second quarter of 2021 due to higher material movement and higher grades and recoveries at Kennecott and Escondida, partly offset by lower grades and recoveries at Oyu Tolgoi as a result of planned mine sequencing.

BHP to Support Tata Steel in Blast Furnaces Green Transformation

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Jul, 2022, 6:54 am

Australian mining giant BHP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India’s leading steel maker Tata Steel, with the intention to jointly study and explore lower carbon iron and steelmaking technology. Under the partnership, BHP and Tata Steel intend to collaborate on ways to reduce the emission intensity of the blast furnace steel route with the use of biomass as a source of energy & application of carbon capture and utilization in steel production. BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer Ms Vandita Pant said “The partnership with Tata Steel highlights the importance of collaborations in being able to successfully identify and implement emission reduction technologies in steelmaking, including by developing abatements that can apply to the existing blast furnace process to incrementally reduce its carbon emissions intensity. India has invested heavily in the blast furnace route for steel production, and its crude steel output was 118 million tonne last year. It is, therefore, critical to innovate and demonstrate pathways to reduce emissions from the blast furnace, while alternative steelmaking pathways emerge and low carbon energy systems scale up.”

The partnership aims to help both companies progress toward their respective climate change goals and support India’s ambitions to be carbon neutral. The technologies explored in this partnership can potentially reduce emission intensity of integrated steel mills by up to 30%. Importantly these projects demonstrate how abatements applied to the blast furnace iron-making process, which contributes to more than 60% of India’s steel production, can materially reduce the carbon intensity of existing capacity.

Beyond these projects, BHP and Tata Steel have committed to a robust ongoing knowledge exchange that will see both parties explore further collaborations, ecosystems and business opportunities in the steel value chain, and the research and innovation sectors in both India and Australia.

A greener steel industry will be integral for India’s growth and decarbonization journey, and we intend to work hard with Tata Steel to enable this development and hopefully set a benchmark for others in the industry to emulate and learn from. Finding pathways to net zero for steelmaking is challenging and complex but we believe that by working with industry leaders like Tata Steel, together, we will find solutions more quickly to help reduce carbon emissions in steel production.” she added.

BHP has in recent years partnered with global majors POSCO, China Baowu, JFE Steel and HBIS Group to explore greenhouse gas emissions reduction from steelmaking. The combined output of the five steel companies in China, India, Japan and South Korea equates to around 13% of reported global steel production.

Iron Ore & Pellets Sales -132.519 million tonnes, down 3.8% YoY

Nickel production was 24% lower QoQ mostly due to scheduled maintenance of our downstream facilities, which was partially offset by strong performance at Onça Puma. Mines operated in a steady pace through the quarter, with North Atlantic mines building up feedstock for planned mine-mill maintenance in 3Q22. Sales were largely in line QoQ as inventories built in 1Q22 were sold in 2Q22.

Copper production was in line with Q1 as the effect of Sossego SAG mill resumption in early June and stronger performance of Canadian mines were offset by both planned and corrective maintenance at Salobo plant. As a result of a longer-than-expected maintenance at Sossego mill and additional maintenance at Salobo mill identified for 2022, Vale is revising its annual production guidance for Copper to 270-285 kt.

Australian iron ore giant BHP’s total iron ore production was in line with the prior period at 253 million tonne and production for the 2023 financial year is expected to be between 249-260 million tonne.

WAIO production of 249 million tonne, 283 million tonne on a 100% basis was in line with the prior period, reflecting continued strong supply chain performance and favourable weather compared to the prior period, offset by the impacts of temporary labour constraints relating to COVID-19, planned track renewal works in the March 2022 quarter and the planned major maintenance on the Jimblebar train load out and car dumper one in the first half. Our preventative maintenance programs continue to underpin the strength of the WAIO supply chain, delivering increased car dumper, reclaimer and ship loader availability year on year and enabling record sales volumes of 284 million tonne on 100% basis.

South Flank ramp up to full production capacity of 80 million tonne on 100% basis is ahead of schedule with an average rate of 67 million tonne achieved in the June 2022 quarter contributing to record production from the Mining Area C hub and record lump sales.

WAIO production for the 2023 financial year is expected to be between 246-256 million tonne, 278- 290 million tonne on a 100% basis reflecting the tie-in of the port debottlenecking project PDP1 and the continued ramp up of South Flank.

BHP hBHP has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for nickel supply with one of the world’s leading automakers, Ford Motor Company. The targeted multi-year nickel supply agreement could start as early as 2025 and may involve additional commodities over time. BHP will explore options to supply Ford Motor Company with nickel from its Nickel West asset in Western Australia, a producer of some of the most sustainable and lowest carbon intensity nickel in the world.

In addition, BHP and Ford Motor Company are exploring ways to make battery supply chains more sustainable and efficient, including opportunities for further alignment on best practice and raising ESG performance transparency.

According to third-party analysis, BHP’s Nickel West asset has one of the world’s lowest operational carbon emissions intensities for nickel mining operations and plans to further reduce emissions, making BHP a partner of choice to battery electric vehicles manufacturers across the globe that value sustainability and transparency.

This announcement with Ford Motor Company follows the signing of supply and collaboration agreements with nickel product end-users including Tesla and PPES & Toyota Tsusho Corporation.as entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for nickel supply with one of the world’s leading automakers, Ford Motor Company. BHP Reports 9% Dip in Coking Coal Production in FY 22

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

BHP’s BMA production decreased by 9% to 29 million tonne, 58 million tonne on 100% basis. Significant wet weather impacts across most BMA operations and labour constraints, including COVID-19 related absenteeism which impacted stripping and mine productivity, more than offset record production at the Broadmeadow mine. Following the automation of Daunia's truck fleet in November 2021, the automation of Goonyella's pre-strip truck fleet was completed in March 2022 with the Goonyella coal truck fleet expected to be fully autonomous by the end of the December 2022 quarter.

Production for the 2023 financial year is expected to be between 29-32 million tonne, 58-64 million tonne on a 100% basis. A long wall move at Broadmeadow mine is scheduled for the September 2022 quarter.

The divestment of BHP’s interest in BMC was completed on 3 May 2022 and BMC volumes are no longer included in metallurgical coal volumes.

NSWEC thermal coal production decreased by 4% to 14 million tonne, reflecting lower volumes due to an increased proportion of washed coal to capitalise on higher margins for higher quality coals, COVID-19 related labour constraints which impacted stripping performance and mine productivity, and wet weather. Production for the 2023 financial year is expected to be between 13-15 million tonne reflecting a continued focus on higher quality coals.

Anglo American Reports Recovery in Production in Apr-Jun 22

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    27 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Anglo American CEO Mr Duncan Wanblad said “Our production performance started to pick up in the second quarter of 2022, with operational momentum and our focus on asset resilience positioning us well for a stronger second half of the year. Full year production guidance is unchanged for PGMs, copper and iron ore, increased for diamonds and decreased for steelmaking coal due to longwall ramp-up timing. Overall for the second quarter, production was 9% lower compared with the same quarter in 2021, primarily due to expected lower grades and water availability in Copper, ramp-up of the Aquila longwall in Steelmaking Coal and planned maintenance at the Minas-Rio iron ore operation.”

He added “Our newly commissioned Quellaveco project in Peru delivered first copper concentrate at the start of July and will contribute to our copper production in the second half. This marks a major milestone in our delivery of this world-class long life asset, on time and on budget - testament to the incredible efforts of our workforce and wider stakeholders through the effects of a global pandemic. Quellaveco is expected to add around 10% to our global output once fully operational, central to the margin-enhancing organic growth we are delivering in future-enabling metals and minerals over the next decade.”

Rough diamond production decreased by 4%, reflecting lower grades in Canada and Botswana. Production guidance is increased to 32–34 million carats (previously 30-33 million carats) due to robust demand and strong year-to-date operational performance.

Metal in concentrate production from Platinum Group Metals operations was broadly flat, with strong performances at Unki and Mototolo offsetting planned lower grades at Mogalakwena.

Copper production decreased by 21% due to planned lower grades and water availability.

Iron ore production decreased by 8% after a safety intervention at Kumba’s Kolomela mine, as well as planned maintenance at Minas-Rio.

Steelmaking coal production decreased by 12% as the replacement Aquila longwall ramped up following the planned end of production from Grasstree, as well as high rainfall impacting the open pit operations. Full year guidance is revised to 15–17 million tonnes (previously 17-19 million tonnes) and unit cost revised to c.$110/tonne (previously c.$105/tonne).

BHP Installing Solar Panels at Northern Goldfields

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    1 Aug, 2.022, 5:30 am

The first solar panels have started being installed this week at BHP’s massive solar farm at Leinster Nickel Operation in the Northern Goldfields. By the end of 2022, over 20,000 solar panels will be installed at this site alone, helping to power BHP Nickel West’s mining and concentrating operations at Leinster.

The Northern Goldfields Solar Project, to be constructed and owned by one of BHP Nickel West’s renewable energy partners TransAlta, includes a 27.4 MW solar farm at Mt Keith Nickel Operation and a 10.7 MW solar farm and 10.1 MW battery at Leinster Nickel Operation, which will be integrated into TransAlta’s Northern Goldfields remote power grid.

The project, which will replace power currently supplied by diesel and gas, will help BHP Nickel West reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions at its Mt Keith and Leinster operations by 12 per cent [1] resulting in an estimated reduction of 54,000 tonnes CO2-e per annum.

The construction phase of the solar project has created more than 100 direct and indirect jobs in the Goldfields and Perth regions and is expected to produce its first solar power by the end of 2022.

TransAlta is also working with BHP Nickel West to identify potential wind sites for a 40 to 50MW wind farm, which would connect to TransAlta’s northern grid and reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions at BHP’s Mt Keith and Leinster operations. Adding wind will increase renewable energy supply to support BHP’s growth and further each company’s sustainability goals.
