Iberdrola Seeks Micromobility Solutions Through PERSEO Iberdrola is taking another step forward in its commitment to electric mobility. The company has launched a new challenge - through its PERSEO International Start-up Programme - to identify 'micromobility' solutions for parking, storage and recharging bicycles and scooters that favour the electrification of urban transport.Mobility using this type of vehicle is not only more efficient and environmentally friendly, but also greatly helps to relieve congestion in cities at times of heavy traffic, thus helping to improve air quality. The energy company is looking for innovative solutions to ensure secure parking against theft and vandalism, to provide charging points for private users and fleets and to offer digital solutions for its management. The proposals will be assessed taking into account criteria related to cyber security and data protection, remote monitoring and land use optimisation. In addition, the cost, maturity and suitability of the project will be assessed, along with its simplicity and scalability and the proposal's degree of digitalisation to optimise efficiency, among other variables. Proposals can be submitted from 5 July until 31 July inclusive and the winner will be announced in September. Iberdrola will provide the winner of the challenge with technical and financial support to test its solution. It will provide the necessary resources to deliver it: equipment and materials, infrastructure, high-tech sites and co-working areas, as well as a real environment with real data. If the pilot project is successful, Iberdrola may also offer the winner the opportunity to scale up the solution by adopting it through commercial agreements and PERSEO may even consider investing in the company that wins the challenge. Iberdrola remains committed to the electrification of transport in its transition strategy for the transition to a decarbonised economy, and sees this as a key lever for reducing emissions and pollution, as well as for the green recovery of the economy and employment. The company is implementing a sustainable mobility plan through which it will install 150,000 recharging points in homes, businesses, urban roads, cities and major motorways over the next few years. Its commitment to the deployment of high-efficiency stations will see the installation of ultra-fast (350 kW), super-fast (150 kW) and fast (50 kW) stations. Source - Strategic Research Institute
Wärtsilä to Provide 156 MW of Equipments for Omaha Public Power The technology group Wärtsilä will supply equipment for a 156 MW multi-fuel engine power plant to Omaha Public Power District, a public electric utility in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The power plant will be part of the utility’s Power with Purpose project, which will add 400 to 600 MW of utility-scale solar generation along with additional dispatchable balancing power. Since the production of renewable energy varies over the day and is dependent on the weather situation, Wärtsilä’s technology with fast-starting internal combustion engines will be used to balance the power generation to the grid and ensure system stability. The contract is included in Wärtsilä’s order intake for the second quarter of 2021. The equipment will be delivered during the second half of 2022, and the plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations in May 2023. Omaha Public Power District’s goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 includes the addition of variable, renewable energy resources balanced by the use of Wärtsilä technology to provide reliability and resiliency. The project is well connected to Wärtsilä’s shift to 100% renewables strategy, whereby the growing share of variable renewable energy is enabled by thermal balancing power. The new Standing Bear Lake Station plant will be located in Douglas County, Nebraska, and will include nine 18-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines operating on natural gas and light fuel oil as needed. Wärtsilä’s multi-fuel engine technology provides fuel resiliency with engines capable of burning natural gas, light fuel oil, and even hydrogen blends. Wärtsilä engines can later be converted to carbon neutral fuels to further enhance decarbonisation. Source - Strategic Research Institute
Schneider Electric & Wärtsilä Launch Lithium Mining Power Solution Schneider Electric and Wärtsilä have partnered to create a sustainable, uninterrupted power solution for the most remote lithium mines in the world. The holistic fit-for-purpose power system includes tailored power supply consulting and design, power infrastructure build, equipment delivery, installation, digital microgrids operation, and commissioning available to mining operators around the world. The Schneider Electric and Wärtsilä solution, developed over 20 years of collaboration spanning over 200 projects, optimizes the efficient delivery and use of energy. It unifies and leverages microgrids, thermal power generation, energy storage, and other renewable energy sources to provide a highly cost-effective power solution with a minimal environmental footprint for the mining industry. Based on pilot projects, typical results include: An average overall CapEx reduction of 27% A CO2 emissions reduction of up to 20% or 18,500 tons per year per mine An energy cost reduction of 40% when switching to the joint Schneider – Wärtsilä solution from local off-grid diesel-generated power The design concept of the project extends to the lifecycle of the mine, delivering and provisioning for the exactly right level of power to enable a mine’s productivity. As a result, operational costs are reduced and power availability is optimized to reach a mine’s production targets. Predictability of parts, power supply and maintenance costs reduce the need for working capital within the 24/7 cycle. This solution works for new mines that are currently being designed and also for mining project conversions. In particular, Argentina has the biggest lithium mining potential in the next five years as sustainable uninterrupted power becomes available. Schneider Electric and Wärtsilä signed the framework co-operation agreement for the development of the design for mining energy solutions in March 2020. The parties aim to optimize customer benefit in mining projects by offering solutions based on mutually complementary technologies. The business whitepaper was published in March 2021.

EU Supports GE for Circuit Breaker of Europe’s Electrical Grid GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions business has been awarded EUR 2.5 million through the European Commission’s LIFEclimate action program to help fund the development of a sulfur hexafluoride free 245 kilovolts G Cubed live tank circuit-breaker. The new circuit-breaker will rely on GE’s industry-leading g cubed gas technology to deliver the same high performance and compact dimensional footprint as a traditional SF6 circuit-breaker. The co-funding reflects the EU’s commitment to accelerate the decarbonization of Europe’s electrical grids and help them get ready for the EU’s stricter fluorinated gas regulation, which aims to cut F-gas emissions by two-thirds by 2030. GE’s g³ gas is a game-changing alternative to SF6 - a potent greenhouse gas - with a global warming potential that is about 99% less compared to SF6. The new GE air-insulated 245 kV g3 live tank circuit-breaker, which will be based on International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards, is the second g3 gas project co-funded by the EU. In 2019, GE received funding for a g3 gas-insulated 420 kV circuit-breaker, also as part of the EU LIFE Program. GE’s Grid Solutions teams will work with several European partners on this second EU-funded g³ gas project, including Germany’s Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology, which will build a scientific database of g³ gas properties. Industrial partners will help optimize the environmental impact of the new circuit-breaker throughout its entire life cycle. Due to its strong insulating and arc-quenching properties, SF6 is widely used in substation equipment with the transmission industry accounting for approximately 80% of the world’s usage. Identified as a potent greenhouse gas by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, SF6 is estimated to contribute 23,500 times more emissions than CO2 when leaked and can remain in the atmosphere for up to 3,200 years. A circuit-breaker is a protective device used on the high voltage electrical network in case of a problem on the grid to cut or redirect the power through another path to avoid blackouts. High-voltage 245 kV circuit-breakers are found at electrical substations on transmission lines carrying the power to or within regional areas. Source - Strategic Research Institute

Wärtsilä to Modernise Power Plant of Flour Mills Nigeria The technology group Wärtsilä will supply fuel-flexible dual-fuel engines to extend, improve, and modernise power generation for a captive power plant at Nigeria’s oldest and largest food and agro allied company, Flour Mills Nigeria. The company’s Lagos-based power plant is needed to ensure sufficient capacity and a reliable electricity supply around the clock to meet its food production requirements, and commitments to its customers. The two received orders were booked by Wärtsilä in March and June. The first order comprises a 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engine generator set and is an extension to the existing generating capacity provided by a similar Wärtsilä engine generator set that has been successfully operating since 2017. The second order comprises a 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF engine generator set and is intended to replace an existing inefficient mono-fuel generating asset in the plant with efficient dual-fuel generating capacity as part of Flour Mills Nigeria’s captive power plant modernisation plans. The Wärtsilä engine generator sets will be delivered during 2021 and are expected to become fully operational in early 2022. The multi-fuel capability of the Wärtsilä engines, which can switch seamlessly from natural gas to liquid fuel mode while running at full load, facilitates continuous supply of electricity to critical loads in the event of uncertainties in the quality and quantity of the gas supply. In addition to maximising the availability and reliability, this inherent capability provides a valuable hedge against fuel price increases, and lends itself to accommodating future fuel infrastructure developments. Chia Hui Power Plant Starts Operations in Taiwan GE announced the start of commercial operation for Chia Hui Power Corporation’s Combined Heat and Power plant in Minxiong Township, in Chaiyi County Chiayi county, the sixth-largest county in Taiwan. GE provided a HA-powered turnkey combined cycle plant covering the full plant lifecycle including power generation equipment, analytics and controls software, and service agreements. The plant adds approximately 535 megawatts, the equivalent electricity needed to power approximately 600,000 Taiwanese homes, and steam for district heating for the citizens of the Chiayi province–serving as a significant achievement in supporting Taiwan’s Renewable Energy Development Act energy policy, which seeks to increase the gas-fired power ratio to 50% by year 2025. The Chia Hui project was also recognized with the “Best-in-Class for Safety and Health Management” award in 2020 by Taiwan OSHA as a model site for Southern Taiwan and was approved by the Bureau of Energy Taiwan for commercial operation. The power plant is comprised of a single generating block equipped with a GE’s 7HA.02 gas turbine powering an H65 generator, a STF-A650 steam turbine powering an H33 generator, and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG). For this turnkey project, GE manufactured, delivered, and installed the equipment and will provide maintenance services for 10 years. Overall plant performance will be monitored and enhanced with GE’s tightly integrated Mark VIe Distributed Control System software solution to help Chia Hui Power Corporation improve asset visibility, reliability, and availability while reducing operating and maintenance costs. Mark VIe is utilized for system-wide programming, configuration, trending, and analyzing diagnostics. It provides a single source of quality, time-coherent data at the controller and plant level to diagnose and adjust how a plant is operating in real time. In addition, Chia Hui power plant will use big data analytics to improve fleet performance and make smarter operational decisions. GE’s Digital Energy Predix Asset Performance Management software will improve predictive maintenance capabilities and the operational life of the power station. It will make the plant more reliable and available, while helping reduce the operating and maintenance costs. Data collected from sensors throughout the facility will be monitored and analyzed 24/7 at GE’s Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) Center in Atlanta, GA, United States. Wärtsilä currently has 5,000 MW of installed capacity in Bangladesh with over 200 company personnel employed. Source - Strategic Research Institute
