API's Expert Gather to Highlight Global Benefits of US LNG Exports

The American Petroleum Institute, along with the Center for LNG and LNG Allies hosted an event discussing the increasing role US LNG exports play in the global energy mix and the global benefits of this transition, including emissions reductions, lifting people out of poverty and increasing global security. Dr Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Association, Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Senator Bill Cassidy will be delivering keynotes at the event. Mr Mike Sommers, API President and CEO, said that US natural gas is meeting growing American energy needs, and at the same time, US LNG exports are improving global conditions and reducing emissions by spreading the benefits of abundant energy to our allies around the world, adding API’s pleasure to be hosting the event with CLNG and LNG Allies. LNG exports are encouraging coal-to-gas switching for power generation from China to Germany, which helps to drive lower emissions while simultaneously bringing affordable and reliable energy to areas which previously had none.”

CLNG Executive Director Charlie Riedl, said that “We are excited to partner with API and LNG Allies in today’s event to highlight the crucial role US LNG is playing in reducing emissions and air pollution globally. US LNG exports are helping to provide jobs here at home and cleaner air abroad. CLNG’s members are working hard to bring affordable, clean and abundant US natural gas to the rest of the world and we are excited about the future.”

Qatar Petroleum & Shell Ink Pact for LNG Bunkering Venture

Qatar Petroleum and Shell subsidiaries signed a shareholder agreement to establish a company that would provide global LNG bunkering services. The agreement signed by Qatar Petroleum’s “Wave LNG Solutions” and “Shell Gas & Power Developments B.V.” paves the way for the establishment of a joint venture company owned equally by both parties, subject to customary regulatory approvals. The new company’s principal business activities will include the procurement of LNG, setting up LNG bunkering infrastructure (storage and bunker vessels) at various strategic locations around the world, and facilitating the sale of LNG as a marine fuel to end customers around the world.

LNG bunkering provides the shipping industry with a unique fuel that helps meet the industry’s environmental and economic objectives. An increasing number of ship owners and operators are turning to LNG over traditional marine fuels in response to tighter sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions regulations. In October 2016, the International Maritime Organization announced the introduction of a global 0.5% sulfur cap from 2020.
Wave LNG Solutions LLC was established by Qatar Petroleum for the purpose of market development and investment in LNG as a transportation fuel, especially for the marine transportation sector.

LNG to be the Most Significant Fuel for International Shipping in Coming 15-20 Years - ICS Chairman Mr Poulsson

Mr Esben Poulsson Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping said in his interview with the Russian Shipping portal that LNG will be the most significant and, perhaps, the most popular fuel for the international shipping in the coming 15-20 years. Obviously, liquefied natural gas will be the most widespread fuel. However, the bunkering market will develop differently in the long term. We already see the appearance of new technologies and witness the development of alternative fuels.

When speaking about the period up to 2050, Mr Esben Poulsson forecasted application of large accumulator batteries, hydrogen and other types of fuel. Today, it is hard to predict which technology will come to the fore.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, the industry is currently on the verge of the fourth propulsion revolution due to involvement of new technologies in shipbuilding and introduction of new types of fuel.

Wartsila to Supply an LNG Bunkering Vessel Simulator to Kasi Group

The technology group Wartsila will supply an LNG bunkering vessel simulator to Kasi Group a leading provider of integrated marine solutions. The simulator will be used to provide hands-on training to those who will be operating LNG bunkering services. Wartsila is the first company capable of offering such a simulator. The order with Wartsila was placed in July. Captain Bo Caspersen, General Manager, Kasi Group said that as the global demand for LNG fuel for marine applications increases, the number of LNG bunkering vessels serving this demand is also increasing. To achieve best operating practices, safety and efficiency, first-rate crew training is essential. The Wartsila simulator enables this. We are familiar with Wartsila’s competence in simulator systems having used them in our research and development programme for some ten years already. We therefore had no hesitation in approaching Wartsila again when we were asked to provide training.

The demand for training services for LNG bunkering vessel simulators has been rising since 2017, when only one single LNG bunkering vessel was in service. By the end of 2018, this number had increased to a total of nine ships, and it is forecasted that a further 30 of these vessels will be delivered during the coming five years.

Total neemt belang in gasbedrijf Adani

Total’s First LNG Bunker Vessel Launched

Total announces that its first large liquefied natural gas bunker vessel has been launched, following the signature of a long-term charter contract between Total and Mitsui OSK Lines in February 2018. After delivery in 2020, the bunker vessel will operate in Northern Europe, where it will supply LNG to commercial vessels, including 300,000 tons per year for CMA CGM’s nine ultra-large newbuild containerships in Europe-Asia trade, for a period of at least 10 years.

The LNG bunker vessel’s construction is in line with the International Maritime Organization decision to drastically limit the sulfur content of marine fuels as of 2020. In this context, the transition from heavy fuel oil to LNG is a competitive, efficient and immediately available solution for maritime transportation.

Used as a marine fuel, LNG sharply reduces emissions from ships, resulting in a significant improvement in air quality, particularly for communities in coastal areas and port cities. LNG helps to cut:
    Sulfur emissions by 99%,
    Fine particle emissions by 99%,
    Nitrogen oxide emissions by 85%,
Greenhouse gases emissions by around 20%.
