    Dit zal sterk toenemen in de toekomst, maar zal de vraag niet extreem verhogen omdat chemisch verkregen koolstof niet veel duurder is.

    Kortom Grafeen heeft de toekomst, maar dit heeft geen relatie met de vraag naar koolstof.

    Vreemd, maar waar.

    SGL Carbon SE (SGLFF.PK) and its subsidiaries constituting the SGL Group, a manufacturer of carbon-based products and materials, Monday reported a loss for full-year 2013, citing mainly unsatisfactory price development in graphite electrodes and cyclical downturn in graphite specialties. Group sales fell 10 percent from last year.

    Looking ahead, the company said it expects a net loss for 2014 both before and after taxes, however significantly lower than in fiscal year 2013, depending on the scope of further restructuring expenditures.

    According to the firm, the negative trends seen in the final quarter of 2013 have continued into the first weeks of 2014, particularly in main business with graphite electrodes. As a result, Group sales should remain stable compared to 2013, it added.

    Jürgen Köhler, CEO of the Group said, "2013 was operationally one of the most difficult years ever for our Company and developed disappointingly. As a result, we implemented the comprehensive group-wide cost savings program SGL2015 to counter the increasing challenges."

    Northern Graphite Develops and Successfully Tests Spherical Graphite Coating Procedure
    OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 19, 2014) - Northern Graphite Corporation (TSX VENTURE:NGC)(OTCQX:NGPHF) announces that it has developed and successfully tested a proprietary process for coating spherical graphite ("SPG") which is the final step before it can be used as an anode material in lithium ion batteries ("LIBs"). SPG is manufactured from the flake graphite concentrate produced by graphite mines. Prices range from $3,500 per tonne uncoated to over $10,000 per tonne for coated SPG.

    Lithium battery cell testing of Northern's coated SPG indicates a higher total capacity and slightly better first cycle efficiency than the commercial materials which were tested. Northern's SPG has a reversible capacity of 368 mAh/g which is very close to the theoretical maximum of 372 mAh/g. Dr. Edward Buiel, founder of Coulometrics,LLC and Northern's partner in developing the coating procedure, stated that: "Large flake graphite from the Bissett Creek deposit has a uniquely pristine crystal structure. The low degree of disorder requires little or no thermal processing and naturally leads to a high degree of reversible capacity for LiB applications. The large pristine flakes also have natural advantages in terms of battery purification and yield during spheronizing that can lead to lower production costs."

    Samsung discovers groundbreaking method to commercialize graphene for electronics

    According to a news release from Samsung, the electronics company has discovered a groundbreaking method to commercialize graphene for electronics.

    The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology in a joint statement said that “This is one of the most significant breakthroughs in graphene research in history. We expect this discovery to accelerate the commercialization of graphene, which could unlock the next era of consumer electronic technology.”

    Graphene has numerous properties that make it an extremely valuable material for an electronics company. According to Samsung, graphene is more durable than steel and has tremendous heat conductibility as well as flexibility. These properties make it ideal for use in flexible displays, wearables and other next gen devices.

    SAIT researchers discovered a novel method of developing large area, single crystal wafer scale graphene. Previously, researchers have found that multi-crystal synthesis the process of synthesizing small graphene particles to generate large-area graphene degraded the electric and mechanical properties of the material.

    The novel technique synthesizes large area graphene into a single crystal on a semiconductor, keeping its electric and mechanical properties. The novel technique repeatedly synthesizes single crystal graphene on the current semiconductor wafer scale.

    Samsung pleegt doorbraak met methode in synthese van grafeen

    Grafeen is een onbegrepen sterk geleidend, thermisch geweldig hexagonaal uitgestrooid netwerk van koolstofatomen met een lengte, breedte maar kent (exclusief atoom) geen dikte, vandaar één atoom dik.

    De vele verworven patenten door Samsung – met grafeen in een sleutelrol – getuigen van een grote interesse naar het laagdimensionale koolstofvel.

    Het bedrijf liet in het jonge grafeen-tijdperk al enkele mooie ontwikkelingen opmerken, vervaardigd uit datzelfde laagdimensionale materiaal. Ondermeer een nieuw type transistor (Barristor) waar grafeen een bandgap aan overhield en mede digitaal handelbaar werd.

    Een andere uitdaging bestaat er uit om het felbegeerde hexagonale koolstofvel efficient, en met een uiterste precisie, gelijkmatig te laten groeien over wafer geschaalde gebieden. Een methode vinden – geschikt voor massaproductie – om het gebruik van grafeen – als vervanger van silicium – in electronica aantrekkelijker te maken is dus de boodschap.

    Er werden reeds meerdere succesvolle methoden ontwikkeld om monolaag grafeen te synthiseren, maar velen bleken onefficient en/of te duur om in de praktijk tewerk te stellen.

    De kwantiteit aan patenten mag dan al niets zeggen over de kwaliteit, toch lijkt het er sterk op dat Samsung beiden kan leveren. De electro-reus claimt nu dat ze samen met onderzoekers van de Universiteit Sungkyunkwan uit Zuid-Korea erin geslaagd zijn om het eerste wafer-schaal gegroeid kreukvrij monokristallijn grafeen op een silicium wafer te produceren.

    Ze deden door te starten via een normale silicium wafer, gecoat met een laag germanium gedipt in verdund fluorwaterstofzuur, waardoor waterstofatomen kunnen binden aan het onderliggende germanium. Daarna gaat de wafer de oven in waar vrijwel normaal CVD wordt toegepast om een laagje grafeen te bakken op het germanium.

    Na nog wat bakken en koelen onder druk is het grafeen klaar. Het grafeen en germanium kan worden gescheiden en daarna dienst doen als basismateriaal bij de ontwikkeling van transistoren en dergelijke toestellen.

    “Dit is een van de meest belangrijke doorbraken in grafeen onderzoek in de geschiedenis,” zei een medewerker van het SAIT laboratorium.

    “We verwachten dat deze ontdekking de commercialisering van grafeen – dat het volgende tijdperk van elektronische technologie kan ontgrendelen – zal versnellen”.

    Dank Voda, straks gaan we met een "papieren" vliegtuigje naar de maan.... en zijn we nog onzichtbaar ook.

    Om de sterkte van graphene te visualiseren.
    Neem eens een lucifer tussen uw vingers, dit is een balk, in het klein.
    Deze balk kan wat gewicht dragen.
    Wanneer we het aantal atomen van deze lucifer vervangen door éénlaags koolstof atomen, en hier een buis van vormen, een nanotube.
    Deze buis heeft dan dezelfde afmeting als een pijler van de Manhattan Bridge.

    De titel van deze draad slaat nergens op. Afgezien van enkele posts van voda (al in april) over iets wat Samsung lijkt te doen met grafeen, gaat de rest over van alles met koolstof, behalve grafeen.

    En wat die 'research' van Samsung m.b.t. grafeen betreft: het zou een schande zijn als zo'n groot bedrijf helemaal niks aan grafeen zou doen.
    Maar voor een kleine particuliere belegger valt er nog niks leuks in grafeen te beleggen. Ondanks lippendienst van koolstofboeren.
