    De paniekprijzen bij MtGox worden veroorzaakt door rekeninghouders die denken dat MtGox failliet gaat en die liever een USD-vordering willen, dan een BTC-vordering.

    Bij MtGox zie ik soms kooporders staan van een paar 1000 stuks, de vraag is natuurlijk wie dat is. Als ik insider was bij MtGox dan zou ik die spotgoedkope munten zelf opkopen en indien mogelijk direct elders verkopen met een enorme winst.
    Hierdoor zouden evt. tekorten bij MtGox met gemak kunnen worden opgelost.

    Voor zover ik weet kan nog steeds iedereen een rekening (met verificatie) openen bij MtGox en geld overmaken via een Poolse bank, de vraag is alleen of dat op tijd lukt om nog goedkope munten te kunnen kopen.
    En de 2e grote vraag is if-and-when je die munten weer kunt overboeken of verkopen.

    For Overstock CEO, Bitcoin Isn't Just A Publicity Stunt

    To get to Patrick Byrne’s house in Utah, one will drive by snow-covered trailers and the rusted-out trucks from which they’ve been unhitched. Overstock’s CEO does not live in a glamorous neighborhood. So when he opens his own garage to reveal two Teslas “gassing up” on their electric pumps, the contrast is jarring. The newer black one is the Model S and the older silver one is the Roadster, Tesla’s first $109,000 offering which Byrne bought as soon as it came out five years ago. His tall frame doesn’t fit in the small car unless he has the roof off. “I can only drive it three months of the year,” says Byrne, 51.

    Such is the pain of being an early adopter of technologies still working out their kinks. The latest to catch the libertarian-at-heart’s eye, and wallet, is Bitcoin. Overstock famously started accepting Bitcoin in January. The Bitcoin community was thrilled to have a big-name retailer start accepting their five-year-old digital currency and rewarded the site with orders. In just a month, the site that sells everything from furniture to jewelry saw $870,000 in sales with “almost 4000 orders.” The most popular items among Bitcoin buyers were, oddly, sheets, followed by computer equipment and cell phone accessories.

    Byrne says that an offhand remark to a reporter in December about the site potentially taking Bitcoin led to massive press for Overstock, which resulted in a mad rush to get the payment system up and running as soon as possible. Thanks to Bitcoin payment processor Coinbase flying an employee to Salt Lake City to work with Overstock and “locking 40 people in a room for a week,” the site’s experiment was live months earlier than they had vaguely planned. And Byrne’s interest in the cryptocurrency was piqued enough that the gold bug cashed in “several million dollars worth” of the gold he was holding (for the inevitable zombie apocalypse/U.S. financial failure) to convert it to Bitcoin. He’s emphatic about that happening at the end of January, after Overstock started taking Bitcoin, to fend off anyone who might accuse him of pumping up the currency’s value for his own sake.

    Silicon Valley staat in de rij om te investeren in veelbelovende bitcoinbedrijfjes. Investeerders die eerder hun geld zetten op Twitter, Spotify, Kickstarter en Zynga richten zich nu op de virtuele munt. Terwijl we in Nederland het hoogste aantal bitcoins per hoofd van de bevolking hebben, hebben investeerders hier nog last van koudwatervrees. "De Nederlandse Winklevoss-broers heb ik nog niet gevonden."

    Die opmerking slaat op misschien wel de bekendste aanhangers dan wel investeerders in bitcoin, Cameron en Tyler Winklevoss. In eerste instantie bekend vanwege hun juridisch gevecht met Mark Zuckerberg over wie er nou echt met het idee voor Facebook kwam, maar inmiddels hebben de durfkapitalisten annex Olympische roeiers zich op de virtuele munt gestort.

    Met de stijgende populariteit van de munt worden steeds meer bitcoinbedrijfjes opgericht. Bedrijven bieden diensten aan variërend van handelsplatforms tot wisselkantoren en wallets, digitale portemonnees waarin bitcoins bewaard worden. In de VS weten zij de weg naar tech-investeerders al aardig te vinden, met als voorlopige uitschieter handelsplatform Coinbase, dat ruim $25 miljoen aan durfkapitaal ophaalde. Een van de investeerders was Union Square Ventures, dat eerder Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare en Zynga op weg hielp.

    In Nederland loopt het nog niet storm, terwijl ook hier de bitcoinsector opbloeit. "In Nederland hebben we het grootste aantal bitcoins per hoofd van de bevolking", zegt Niels van Groningen van het handelsplatform Bitonic, in 2012 opgericht dus al bijna een oudgediende in de branche. "Als bitcoinbedrijf is het soms lastig om serieus genomen te worden bij de bank. ABN Amro is nu heel erg betrokken, maar Rabobank weigerde ons als klant, daar zijn ze heel negatief. Wij hadden wel potentiële investeerders, maar allemaal uit dezelfde hoek als bitcoin zelf. Gelukkig konden wij organisch groeien."

    Volgens Van Groningen zijn Amerikaanse investeerders meer geneigd tot risico. Daar sluit Dolf Diederichsen van Bit4coin.net, dat giftcards verkoopt die in te wisselen zijn voor bitcoins, zich bij aan. "Investeerders in Europa lopen een beetje achter de VS aan, daar staan ze meer open voor innovatie." Bovendien zijn niet alle bitcoinbedrijven even serieus te nemen, denkt hij. "Soms is zo'n start-up niet meer dan een app of een simpele bitcoinportemonnee die wordt bijgehouden door twee twintigjarigen. Daar is voor een investeerder weinig eer aan te behalen." Als voorbeeld noemt hij investeerder en Spotify-adviseur Shakil Khan, die een jongen met een eigen bitcoinbedrijf vroeg wat er zou gebeuren als hij onder een bus zou komen. Diederichsen: "Daar had die jongen dus niet over nagedacht. Dat geeft precies aan wat bij sommige bedrijven ontbreekt."

    Volgens Diederichsen zijn Nederlandse banken relatief bitcoinvriendelijk. Het was een van de redenen om zijn bedrijf in Nederland te vestigen. "Bovendien zijn toezichthouders goed op de hoogte. Op een bitcoinconferentie in Nederland liep zelfs iemand van De Nederlandsche Bank rond."

    Ook Richard Kohl van Pikapay, een dienst waarmee bitcoins via Twitter verstuurd kunnen worden, roemt de open houding van het toezicht. "Nederland is traditioneel gericht op innovatie en is tolerant. De kans is dan minder groot dat ze iets nieuws willen overreguleren of gemakkelijk onder het kopje 'illegaal' scharen." In Nederland is bitcoin nog niet gereguleerd, minister van Financiën Jeroen Dijsselbloem stelde dat de munt geen erkend betaalmiddel is en dus niet onder de Wet financieel toezicht valt. Positief, zegt Kohl, omdat bitcoin daarmee wordt gezien als technologie en als innovatiemotor voor de economie en het dus voor bedrijven laagdrempelig is om een bitcoindienst op te zetten.

    Kohl denkt dat lang niet alle bedrijven in hun beginfase een investeerder nodig hebben. "Het is nu veel goedkoper om een bedrijf te beginnen dan zo'n tien, vijftien jaar geleden. Toen moest je je nog echt op traditionele manieren van funding richten, nu kun je ook terecht bij crowdfundingssites als Kickstarter en Indiegogo. Je hebt tegenwoordig vooral flexibiliteit en goede ideeën nodig, niet meer per se die grote zak met geld."

    Toch zitten investeerders wel op het vinkentouw. Een Nederlandse private equity partij, die anoniem wil blijven, zegt te kijken naar verschillende investeringen op gebied van digitale valuta. "Het is nog niet vanzelfsprekend dat we dit gaan doen, al blijven we kijken hoe het onderwerp zich ontwikkelt. We horen wel eens dat bitcoin is voor valuta wat napster was voor muziek, we zullen het zien."

    Het uitgeven van bitcoin wordt daarentegen steeds makkelijker. Via Coinmap.org kun je precies opzoeken welke bedrijven in de buurt bitcoin accepteren. De mogelijkheden zijn het grootst binnen de Randstad, daar kun je je virtuele munten bijvoorbeeld besteden aan fietsonderdelen, een shiatsu massage of kitesurflessen of het inhuren van dj-duo Cowboy en Henk.

    MTGox still authoring invalid transactions

    The MTGox transaction API (https://data.mtgox.com/api/0/bitcoin_tx.php) shows transactions MTGox authors.

    Throughout the outage— e.g. as early as the 8th— they've been making a small number of what looks like dust sweeping transactions.

    One shown right now is TXID ed7ffa58fef651adaf1281ad10e98a4399eb2be40950345c7ccb7c8f76f067e1 which spends 45d45286bac04311684ab7716ab170b50781cde6b094d9a644fb89ca07ae6888:31 which is the coinbase transaction of block 0000000000000000da75e32e941537e00bd2e752527adba6193f35ccaa6da293. At the moment it only has 62 confirmations.

    Because the rules of the Bitcoin protocol prohibit spending coinbase txn with under 100 confirmations this transaction is currently invalid and will remain invalid for another 38 blocks.

    So after all this outage time, MTGox has still not fixed their software to stop authoring invalid transactions.

    Als ik het bitcoinsysteem goed begrijp is dat met die confirmations juist één van de belangrijkste dingen in het systeem. En het oplossen van het probleem bij MtGox lijkt me wel belangrijk voor het vertrouwen in het systeem, zeker voor de gewone man/speculant die snel wil meeliften op de hype.

    Deze opmerking van jou verbaast me. Alle tot nu toe geplaatste stukken over Mt.Gox zijn visies, veronderstellingen en aannames. Dit bericht levert het keiharde bewijs dat alles nog goed mis is bij Mt.Gox en ik vrees dat dat nog wel even zou kunnen duren. Daarom moeten we zeker geen censuur op de berichtgeving toepassen omdat het voor sommigen "te moeilijk" zou zijn.

    Ik zal het anders zeggen zodat je het misschien wel begrijpt:

    Dit forum is niet bedoeld voor bitcoin-techneuten; vrijwel niemand (ik ook niet) begrijpt dit soort bitcoin-koeterwaals, het is dus zinloos om het hier te plaatsen.
    Er zijn genoeg andere berichten over hetzelfde onderwerp die wel begrijpelijk zijn.
    Dat MtGox nog niet in orde is wisten we ook al.

    We caught up with Gregory Maxwell, the core Bitcoin developer regarding the current transaction malleability bug and Mt. Gox.

    Are Mt. Gox blaming their own coding incompetence on yourself and the other Bitcoin developers?

    It’s hard to tell what MtGox is doing or thinking as they are very poor at communications.

    I was very surprised by their press release, it was completely out of the tone of the discussion I had with them last week. I was also pretty insulted by it, I sought them out to advise them that they had issues and what I believed them to be— as a pure act of helpfulness on my part— and I got nothing out of it, except their press release using the fact that they’d talked to me to straighten their somewhat misleading claims.

    MTGox runs software they wrote themselves, they have no one else to blame for it but themselves.

    Will updates from your end be pushed or will it be up to the exchanges?

    Entirely separately from MTGOX, someone suddenly started dos attacking the network with mutated transactions about 24 hours ago. They’re a nuisance and gumming up some services, but not causing any loss of funds like mtgox experienced. MtGox’s issues were their own mistakes.

    We’ll probably issue some updates to filter out the DOS attack, however.

    How much damage has Mt. Gox caused to the community?

    I think they’ve done more damage to the remaining goodwill the Bitcoin community had for them than anything else. Market prices sometimes just reflect the most nervous parties, so I’m not sure how much weight to give the impact there. Bitcoin itself works fine regardless of what price people are buying it at.

    As someone who personally has some funds in MtGox I’d personally like to know how much they lost. Prior to their press release I’d assumed the amount must be small or internal controls would have caught it,
    instead of people reporting it to them on chat. The intensity and character of their response leaves me worried that my initial estimates might have been incorrect.

    Mt. Gox Bitcoin price surges 200% amidst withdrawal rumors

    Withdrawal speculation has sparked a price surge on the troubled Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, with the BTC/USD exchange rate reaching an all time high since forgoing transaction meltability problems.

    The rumour was sparked on the popular Bitcoin reddit community board which retains over 100,000 loyal subscribers resulting in a surge in the BTC/USD price. It reached an all time high of $348.

    Headquartered in Tokyo, Mt. Gox was once the most popular virtual currency exchange in the world, reporting an impressive 10,000 new user registrations per month last April.
    If you’ve not been keeping up with the recent news, this success was quickly reversed with prices diving to $91.50 when user accounts were suspended. Mt. Gox blamed a transaction bug in the Bitcoin source code.

    Investors and account holders have yet to receive concrete evidence that their investments are safe or even timely progress of how the company is working to fix the alleged bugs.

    Is the sudden price surge a sign that the troubled exchange is once again operating as normal?

    All the same, we think it’s safe to say that even if withdrawals resume, customers will no longer trust such a company with their hard-earned Bitcoins.

    First Bitcoin Shop in Hong Kong Opening This Week

    A 400-square-foot shop is opening this week in Western Hong Kong in the Sai Ying Pun area, becoming the city’s first bitcoin purchasing point. Asia Nexgen Bitcoin Exchange is responsible for the store, and they’re hoping it’ll become the place to acquire the digital currency in the vicinity.

    It’s all about ease of access:

    “The biggest issue people have right now is buying the bitcoin. People have to put money in, trade it through an exchange online,” said Asia Nextgen’s Lo Ken-bon, who heads the company.

    “Now, you walk into the store, hand over your cash and send the bitcoin to your digital wallet.”

    In effort to comply with anti-money laundering regulation, anyone looking to purchase bitcoin from the shop will be required to provide an address and identification.

    But there’s a looming uncertainty with regard to the legality of the business due to lack of legislation.

    “We will be operating it as a vending machine. There’s no exchange of money involved,” said Lo.

    In mid-November, authorities in Hong Kong stated they would not be regulating bitcoin, but according to the South China Morning Post, “A source from Customs and Excise said officials were considering which government department was responsible for regulating bitcoin-based activity.”

    For now, it would seem as if the bitcoin shop is in the clear. Whether or not that changes down the line is anyone’s guess at this point. [via SCMP]
