    Short-Run Economics
May 1, 2010 12:00 PM, Edited by Claudia Hine, Managing Editor

Customer requests for small orders move The Colad Group into the digital age with the purchase of a Xeikon press.

Hugo Rodriguez is a digital operator for The Colad Group on the company’s new Xeikon 6000.
For more than 60 years, The Colad Group has built a reputation for excellence, delivering world-class packaging solutions to a variety of Fortune 5000 clients throughout North America. As the global economic downturn began to take hold, Todd Anson, president of Colad, noticed a greater demand for shorter-run print jobs as companies tried to achieve cost savings by printing more strictly according to need.

Colad was using two offset presses, but Anson decided that a high-speed digital press would most effectively meet the company's short- and medium-run print job needs. It was not long before Anson settled on the Xeikon 6000 digital color press.

“We've got plenty of big guns for runs over 10,000 pieces, but fewer folks want 10,000,” Anson says. “They want 1,000 or fewer per order; then they order multiple times. It's understandable with the uncertain economy.”

Productivity & Imaging Width Are Key
The productivity of the Xeikon 6000 was a compelling factor for Colad. “There are plenty of wide format flatbed presses out there, but they're just really slow,” says Anson. “It could literally take an entire shift to print a small job, whereas right now we can do that in one hour or less.”

In addition, the Xeikon 6000 can run 20-in.-wide rolls with almost no limitations on the length of the printed image and on a wide variety of substrates. It can print at true 1,200 dpi at 4 bits per spot for incredible quality, exceeding Colad's image quality needs.

“For us, one of the primary benefits of the Xeikon 6000 is the format flexibility of the machine with its 20-inch web width and unlimited length,” Anson says. “So, we can easily produce applications with 20 inch by 40 inch sheet size. You can fit a lot on the 40-inch direction if you compare that with other presses in this space. That alone made it easy to say, ‘Hey these other machines won't work for us.’”

Colad was able to secure several new clients in the first few months of running the Xeikon 6000 with its expanded short-run productivity. The company has received requests for digitally printed paperboard packaging and litho-mounted corrugated boxes, and in each case the quantity was less than 250.

“In the past, I doubt we would have gotten any of these jobs. The way the pricing works with offset presses, you are always looking to amortize your costs over as many sheets as you can due to the upfront makeready steps. A digital press has none of those issues,” Anson says.

    Response Highly Positive
Anson adds the response from his clients to the Xeikon 6000, both through surveys and direct conversations, has been overwhelmingly affirmative. “So far it's just been really strong and positive. Even folks we hadn't heard from in a long time are coming out of the woodwork and saying, ‘Oh wow, I'll have to let my folks know you have this.’ We're now going to be an option for them,” he says.

Another advantage of the Xeikon 6000 is the intuitive interface of its X-800 digital front end, which Colad has been able to integrate seamlessly into its workflow. “The X-800 front-end software is very powerful,” says Anson. “It's got a lot of built-in features we've been able to take advantage of. The flexibility and ease of use of the X-800 are two big assets.” As a result, his team has been able to achieve improved print quality and consistency while reducing waste and increasing overall efficiency with the X-800.

    Be the first to comment

Held in their Belgium head quarter, the event was a grand success with the participation of around 70 label and package convertors from across the globe.

Flexo Image Graphics, the sole distributor for Xeikon in India (labels and packaging industry) ensured an impressive participation from India.

The three-day event started with a brief by Wim Maes, CEO, Xeikon, about the integrated graphic art group of Xeikon and its financials, sales evolutions and strategic directions for its future.

Flip Weymaens, marketing and business development manager for Xeikon made impressive and detailed presentations explaining the details about Xeikon's adaptation of technologies like electro photography, full rotary principal, dry toners, and substrates in it's digital label presses.

The reasearch and development team of Xeikon organised workshops for the participants educating them about the economical advantages of using Xeikon digital label press, substrates printable on Xeikon 3000 Series; it's applications, finishing equipments for Xeikon engines, QA-I dry toner for the Xeikon presses and Xeikon’s X800 workflow.

UK converter hosts open house for Xeikon installation

Posted in Latest News on June 16, 2011

Bradford, UK-based converter The Label Makers recently hosted an open house to mark the installation of a Xeikon 3030 digital press.

Managing Director David Webster spoke about family owned company’s production history, which includes letterpress, litho, flexo and now digital equipment. He discussed the benefits of Xeikon’s QA-I toner and the machine’s ability to create high-quality opaque white in just one pass.

‘It has been a brilliant move,’ he said of the installation. ‘We have been pleasantly surprised at the number of existing customers that have been keen to move into digital. The fact that no plates are required makes a huge difference to the way that customers order their labels.

‘We did actually have a genuine customer requirement for a run of one recently. A special presentation of a 50 year-old bottle of whisky required a personalized label. The customer was thrilled and delighted by the result, and by the fact that it didn’t cost them an arm and a leg. Whilst we are still educating many of our customers regarding the benefits and capabilities of digital production, other clients are asking about our new equipment, and how it will benefit them.’

The Label Makers installed an AB Graphic Digicon finishing line to operate alongside the digital press. The line incorporates hot foiling, two flexo units, a glueing station and cold foil applicator, lamination, a silkscreen unit, varnishing and die-cutting. ‘The finishing line is extremely impressive,’ added Webster. ‘We are using it for all forms of label production – not just digital, but litho and flexo as well.’

The Label Makers has created a dedicated digital area in its factory where the Xeikon and AB Graphic machines are housed. The area has room for additional machinery and Webster confirmed a second Xeikon was under consideration.

Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s marketing and business development manager for labels and packaging, informed the audience that the event was one of a series of roadshows that the company was holding with customers throughout Europe.

Visitors to the event included international label printing businesses from six countries as well as UK companies. UK sales director Greg Neesham was delighted with the attendance: ‘This is certainly the largest label event that we have put together in the UK. That illustrates that there are plenty of label producers out there that are keen to invest in the benefits offered by a Xeikon digital solution.’

Xeikon 3300 to make South American debut at Andigráfica 2011

Eede, The Netherlands, June 21, 2011 - Printing professionals in South America will be able to see the Xeikon 3300 in action for the first time at Andigráfica 2011. Xeikon will demonstrate its high-performance web-fed digital press, which has been developed for high-volume label printing and industrial applications. Andigráfica is being staged in Bogotá, Columbia, between 21 and 25 June. The Xeikon 3300 will be on show at booth 201, the stand of Xeikon’s Columbian distributor, Graphic Solutions International (GSI).

Delegates visiting the GSI stand will discover firsthand the benefits of the Xeikon 3300 digital label press. The system has been designed for use with the most common web width of 330 mm (13”), but also capable of handling a web width as narrow as 200 mm (7.9"), at speeds of up to 19.2 m/min (63 ft/min). Xeikon’s other flagship model, the Xeikon 3500, runs at the same speed and is capable of handling both the wider 516 mm (20.3”) maximum web width as well as a web width as narrow ad 250 mm (9.8") on a wide range of substrates.

The award-winning Xeikon 3300 delivers striking 1200dpi image quality, thanks to LED technology and Xeikon’s dry toner technology. In addition, full rotary printing ensures speed is unaffected by label size or by the number of colors used, delivering predictable production. It can print on a wide range of conventional substrates without pre-coating, including various self-adhesive materials, such as co-extruded films, Bopp, PVC and PET, paperboards, paper with weights ranging from 40 to 350gsm, and transparent and opaque foils.

The Xeikon 3300 uses the newest QA-I toner, which meets all the applicable FDA guidelines for indirect food contact under room temperature, as well as direct food contact for dry food substances containing no surface oil or fat under the same conditions. QA-I toners deliver impressive levels of light fastness that have been confirmed by independent laboratory testing.

Xeikon will showcase during Andigráfica 2011 the Xeikon X-800 digital front-end. Based on open standards, it can be integrated into any production environment, while its modular set-up enables users to more efficiently manage different production elements. Equipped with the new Adobe® PDF Print Engine, this next generation of PDF native RIP offers even greater reliability, consistency and predictability from application to output, and supports the latest transparency effects.

Filip Weymans, Business Development Manager Industrial Printing at Xeikon, comments: "Xeikon’s presence at Andigráfica underlines the importance of the Latin American market to the company. We want to increase our presence in the continent, and prove that we are committed to helping print service providers in the region improve the way they operate. The availability of the Xeikon 3000 Series, coupled with the vast market and application knowledge of our distribution partner GSI, means Latin American printers will have access to digital printing technology and know-how that can help transform their operations.”

Orlando Sanabria, GSI Director, agrees that Andigráfica 2011 is a unique opportunity for print service providers in the region: “Delegates can take advantage of the benefits afforded by the high-performance Xeikon 3300, such as improving quality, productivity and flexibility, as well as enhancing their sustainability credentials."

Labelsprint seals UK first with Xeikon 3500 investment

By Tim Sheahan Monday, 27 June 2011

Labelsprint has invested in the UK's first Xeikon 3500 digital colour label press in a bid to take a "larger bite" out of the long-run flexographic market.

    Be the first to comment

The Rhyl, north Wales-based company, was formed from the merger of digital label printer Borble and print management business Labels First in October last year.

The 3500 is the latest in a long line of Xeikon machines run at the Rhyl business, and replaces an outgoing 330 press.

According to Gary Lovell, sales director at Labelsprint, the Xeikon 3500 offers the opportunity to print both wider and longer label runs as well as smaller-format jobs more efficiently and more cost-effectively.

He said: "We have to appreciate that our production solution is not simply about producing short runs at a lower cost than everybody else. That is not going to continue as a sustainable business for very long.

"While other companies in the digital label market only covet "short-run work", we firmly believe that we can produce substantially longer print runs with the new Xeikon 3500."

The company's new machine can print at resolutions up to 1,200x3,600dpi at speeds reaching 594sqm an hour.

Gavin Scott, Labelsprint managing director, said the ability to print on substrates up to 550mm in width raised the bar and extended the company's reach into the flexo market.

"The new machine will sit well alongside our Xeikon 3300 machine, providing us with suitable back-up but also offering an extended range of capabilities," he added.

Personalisierte Label machen Eindruck beim Verbraucher, weiß Dr. Rainer Ulrich.

    zie transparantiemelding
    www.punchinternationa...type=X

    Succes.

Xeikon, dedicated to labels at Labelexpo Europe 2011

    06 Jul 2011

New hardware and software ensure Xeikon delivers business winning solutions

Xeikon announces its participation to Labelexpo Europe 2011. At the show, the company will showcase an impressive line-up of five solutions dedicated to digital label printing, including digital label presses, converting lines and integrated software. On stand 45 in Hall 9, Xeikon will present a wide web label solution with its Xeikon 3500, the most productive digital label press available on the market. The show will also mark the launch of the DCoat500 that will be showcased ’in World Première’ as the in-line finishing solution of the Xeikon 3500.

Besides participating in the Package Printing Zone, Xeikon is again one of the challengers in the Digital Print Workshops where the company demonstrates the advantages of its dry toner technology in terms of quality, sustainability, flexibility and profitability. Xeikon will also take the opportunity to underline its position as an innovator of choice in the label industry, unveiling a number of new developments in workflow and finishing.

“Labelexpo is one of the industry’s leading events and it has achieved this status because of its clear focus. Also at Xeikon, we are dedicated to label production and we're looking forward to present our latest innovations at this year's show edition in Belgium," says Filip Weymans, Business Development Manager Labels & Packaging at Xeikon. "Following the introduction of the Xeikon 3000 Series at Labelexpo Americas last year, we now bring our series of digital label presses to the label converters in Europe. With the newest Xeikon 3500 and Xeikon 3050 on the show ground, we'll highlight the wide range of business opportunities that go far beyond self-adhesive labels such as heat transfer labels, wetglue labels, folding carton, POP/POS..... We are proud to be present with three of our presses during the show as it reflects how fast the market embraced our technology."

Launch of DCoat500 makes the Xeikon 3500 even more productive

Following the introduction of the wider Xeikon 3500 digital label press last year, Xeikon responds to its customers' requirements by completing this solution with a wider converting line. Launching the DCoat500, Xeikon concludes its range of existing finishing solutions DCoat330, UCoat500 and the miniDCoat330. With this latest addition to Xeikon's product portfolio, the company offers a unique solution for complete self-adhesive label production, from prepress over printing to finishing on a 500 mm/20” web width.

Depending on the label printer's production necessities, the DCoat500 can be placed in-line or off-line, making it a highly flexible solution. The DCoat500 provides the finishing touch by applying a UV varnish or lamination. It also incorporates a die-cut station able to operate full rotary or semi rotary, which is an ideal and cost-effective solution for the short to medium runs. In addition, it includes slitting and rewinding features for the last stage of the production.

    Expertise on display

To demonstrate the performance capabilities offered by Xeikon's technology and expertise, the company can be found in three separate locations around the show:

The Xeikon 3500 with in-line DCoat500 @ Xeikon stand 45 (Hall 9) – Presenting its complete range of digital label printing and finishing solutions. Visitors will discover the business potential and benefits of running an in-line solution for print and finish.

The Xeikon 3300 with in-line DCoat330 @ the Digital Print Workshops (Hall 9) - In the ultimate challenge visitors will see Xeikon battle it out with other press manufacturers to demonstrate how different digital processes – inkjet, dry toner and liquid toner – produce the same label job on identical substrates matching a color proof. A neutral moderator will run the workshops. Visitors will learn how to set up and run each label press to optimize label print performance and quality, assess new product and market opportunities and compare print quality and performance.

The Xeikon 3050 @ Package Printing Zone (Hall 12) – A new feature of Labelexpo where live demonstrations of digital package printing by companies such as Xeikon enable visitors to discover how narrow and mid web presses can be used for short-run packaging applications. They will learn that as print runs are getting shorter, it becomes even more cost-effective to adopt machinery traditionally used for label printing. Xeikon will build up its live demonstration around the production of a consumer product launch that involves a variety of materials such as wet-glue labels, heat transfer labels, folding cartons and POS/POP.

New business opportunities with heat transfer applications

Together with its partner MOSS, a leader in container decorating technologies, Xeikon will also showcase on its stand the 'Digitube' applicator for decorating flexible seamless tubes, aluminum closures and similar articles. This heat transfer technology allows to decorate a variety of plastic containers and others through digital printing technology. In the first stage of this process, the Xeikon 3500 prints the exact numbers of heat-transfer labels required for the decoration. In the next step, the roll of printed transfers is fed into the MOSS applicator which perfectly applies the label via a heat transfer process onto the container.

The result is a high-quality, digitally printed and applied decoration that is scratch and water resistant. In addition, it offers a higher flexibility as the decoration can be applied later in the supply chain, compared to traditional methods (screen and offset printing), where it must be printed at the very beginning. Xeikon will demonstrate this live at the booth, clearly showing the new business opportunities of heat transfer technology to label printers and converters.

“There is a lot happening at the show and we are delighted to be part of the many interactive opportunities that give us the chance to highlight our real-time capabilities in an independent environment,” concludes Weymans. “We look forward to inform visitors at the show of what is possible with our range of technology-led, market-focused solutions. At our stand, they can discover a range of real-life customer cases that will be displayed with samples, videos and presentations. And learn more about how they can use our technologies to improve their business. ”

Press release from the issuing company

(Weymouth, MA) – InfoTrends announced today the publication of its 2011 forecast for production level color digital presses used to print labels and packaging. InfoTrends estimates that converters worldwide spent $166 million on this category of color digital presses in 2010, and that that total will grow at a 10.3% annual rate, 2010 to 2015.

"2010 was a bigger year for color electrophotographic presses than we expected, meanwhile inkjet placements were not as robust as we had earlier forecasted," said Bob Leahey, the forecast's author and Associate Director of InfoTrends' Color Digital Label and Package continuous information service. "There's good growth, though, on both sides. Converters now often use color digital presses in tandem with their analog systems, and some converters operate both electrophotographic and inkjet presses."

The new report, Color Digital Packaging and Labels Market Forecast: 2010-2015, includes a detailed numerical description the regional markets for costly color digital presses made by such companies as Agfa, EFI Jetrion, HP Indigo, Xeikon, and Xerox, cut by electrophotographic and inkjet technologies. The report describes the placements, revenues, and installed bases for the collective brands for the forecast period worldwide. The forecast also estimates and forecasts revenues for media, toners, and inks cut by label, folding carton, and flexible packaging applications, and it calculates value of printed output for each.

"Right now label and packaging converters worldwide bill about $2 billion annually for the output of their color digital presses," Leahey continued. "While about 95% of that value is for labels for consumer goods, the young folding carton and flexible packaging applications are themselves growing. Geographically, Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) and North America (NA) and are the biggest markets for color digital label and packaging presses. Asia Pacific and Japan (AP/J) and rest of world (ROW) are the smaller and faster-growing regions."

InfoTrends' Color Digital Packaging and Labels Market Forecast report provides pivot tables for placements, installed base, revenue, volume, and retail value of print. In addition, the report contains a detailed set of slides that distill and describe the forecast data and also the thinking behind it. These slides describe the in-scope presses and applications, recent developments affecting the market, the key forces at work in future markets.

    Het gaat goed met Xeikon...

Range of HERMA self-adhesive materials approved for Xeikon 3000 Series presses.Several paper and film grades for conventional applications and demanding environments

The irresistible rise in popularity of HERMA self-adhesive materials started with wine labels, and then the pharmaceutical and food industries discovered their benefits. They have long since become indispensable in the retail segment and several other sectors as well. In view of their cost advantages for small jobs, digitally printed labels on rolls are being used for more and more applications. For this reason, HERMA has obtained approval for a selected range of self-adhesive materials, verifying their suitability for toner-based digital printing with the Xeikon 3000 Series digital label presses.

    FDA compliant Xeikon QA-I toner
The HERMA materials run smoothly with the latest generation Xeikon QA-Industrial (QA-I) dry toner based technology. It's specifically developed for the labelling and packaging market and delivers significant benefits in terms of image quality, light fastness, food safety and ecology.

The QA-I toner's increased light fastness - score of Y6-7 – C7-8 – M6-7 – K8 on the blue wool scale - ensures labels don’t fade and remain in perfect condition for their whole shelf life. By optimizing the color pigments, the QA-I toner meets all the applicable FDA guidelines for indirect food contact under room temperature and less severe conditions as well as direct food contact for dry food substances containing no surface oil or fat under the same conditions.

Says Hans Verberckmoes, Print Media & Technology Centre Manager from Xeikon,“Both the paper and film substrates performed really well on all 4 of the Xeikon 3000 series presses. The tests confirm HERMA as a Xeikon AURA partner, refering to the fully-encompassing partner-network that brings together information on all Xeikon partners and their integrated solutions in one central location as a professional networking source. Together with selected partners like HERMA, Xeikon facilitates the print media choice by the customer by identifying what will suit his/her requirement and by providing accurate information based on profound testing of the various substrates.”

    Outstanding print quality
The HERMA range encompasses four white papers, comprising machine finished (HERMAwhite, grade 601), semi-gloss coated on one side (HERMAextracoat, grade 242), glossy coated on one side (HERMAgloss, grade 245) and high gloss cast-coated on one side (HERMAlux, grade 261). Thanks to their very good to outstanding printability, they are the ideal choice for first-class labels. These paper grades are complimented by two white film-based self-adhesive materials. HERMA PP white extra tc (grade 880) is a glossy opaque polypropylene film. It produces superior labels with a strong visual appeal that endures even in hostile weather conditions and when exposed to chemicals. For cool and damp labelling environments and if high temperatures up to 150 degrees Celsius are to be encountered after dispensing – in case of some type plates for example – HERMA PETP white matt (grade 996) is the perfect choice. The adhesive 63B that is used with this material offers very good adhesion, even on critical surfaces, and seawater resistance.

    Maximum reliability
This range, selected for digital printing with the Xeikon 3000 Series digital label presses, covers numerous regular applications. "Xeikon is widely acknowledged as a driver of innovation in the toner-based digital printing segment, especially in view of its ability to process standard adhesive materials without any special pre-treatment," comments HERMA managing director Dr. Thomas Baumgärtner. "We can now offer supremely reliable solutions that are officially approved, as it were, to the growing band of Xeikon users – backed by the product and service quality standards for which HERMA has long since established a strong reputation in the conventional printing community."

    Brief profile of HERMA
Located in Filderstadt near Stuttgart (Germany), HERMA GmbH is a leading European specialist in self-adhesive technology. In the 2010 fiscal year, the HERMA Group generated sales of around €229 million with 800 employees in three divisions – Self-adhesive Materials, Labels and Machines. The export ratio was around 54 %.
