    'Nieuwe test downsyndroom snel ingevoerd'

    AMSTERDAM - Het VU medisch centrum in Amsterdam biedt vanaf eind dit jaar een bloedtest aan zwangere vrouwen om vast te stellen of hun baby mogelijk het syndroom van Down heeft.

    Dat meldt onderzoeker Cees Oudejans van het VU medisch centrum. De methode is veiliger en eenvoudiger dan de vruchtwaterpunctie die nu wordt gebruikt. Bovendien kan met de nieuwe test met bijna 100% zekerheid worden aangetoond of een baby het downsyndroom heeft.

    Vergoeding nog onduidelijk
    De nieuwe test kost ongeveer 500 euro. Het is nog niet duidelijk of de zorgverzekeraars hem vergoeden. "Het is denkbaar dat vrouwen in risicogroepen de test vergoed krijgen. Dat is nu ook zo met de huidige test," zegt Oudejans.

    Engelse en Cypriotische onderzoekers hebben voor de derde keer vastgesteld dat deze bloedtest werkt. "Daar zijn we, ook namens onze patiënten, erg blij mee," zegt Oudejans. "We gaan nu apparaten aanschaffen, mensen inhuren en de procedure testen. Dan kunnen we ermee aan de slag," aldus Oudejans. Hij denkt dat andere academische ziekenhuizen hier ook mee bezig zijn.     'Mannen twintig procent meer kans op kanker'

    AMSTERDAM - Mannen hebben vaak een ongezondere leefstijl dan vrouwen. Vooral daardoor hebben ze 20% meer kans op kanker. Dat meldt het Wereld Kanker Onderzoek Fonds.

    Het fonds heeft gezondheidsgids gepresenteerd die speciaal is gericht op het mannelijk deel van de Nederlandse bevolking. De gids geeft hen informatie over gezond leven.

    In 2008 bijvoorbeeld werd per duizend mannen gemiddeld bij 4,8 personen kanker vastgesteld. Bij vrouwen lag dat aantal op vier personen per duizend. Bij mannen was in 2009 kanker de belangrijkste doodsoorzaak. Van alle mannelijke sterfgevallen was 35,2% kankerpatiënt. Ter vergelijking: 28% van de mannen overleed in dat jaar aan hart- en vaatziekten.

    Ongezonde leefstijl
    Onderzoeken wijzen uit dat mannen vaker roken, alcohol drinken en suikerrijke frisdrank nuttigen. Daarbij eten ze meer rood- en bewerkt vlees en hebben ze vaker overgewicht. Gemiddeld wordt een derde van alle gevallen van kanker veroorzaakt door een ongezonde leefstijl.

    Wetenschappers denken dat niet alleen leefstijl, maar ook andere factoren een rol spelen bij de verhoogde kans op kanker. Zo zouden mannelijke hormonen een rol spelen.

    Het Wereld Kanker Onderzoek Fonds is een stichting die voorlichting geeft over gezond eten en drinken om op die manier kanker te voorkomen. (ANP/MDS)

    Multiresistente tuberculose rukt op

    De nieuwe vormen van TBC die oprukken zijn veel moeilijker te bestrijden en de medische behandeling kost veel meer geld. Dat zegt KNCV Tuberculosefonds aan de vooravond van Wereld Stop Tuberculosedag die donderdag wordt gehouden.
    In 2009 overleden wereldwijd 1,9 miljoen mensen aan tuberculose, vooral in derdewereldlanden. In 2008 werden 440.000 gevallen van multiresistente tbc geteld. De behandeling van deze vorm kost tien keer meer dan 'gewone' tbc.

    Resistentie

    Multiresistente vormen ontstaan als patiënten met normale tbc hun medicijnkuur niet afmaken. De kosten van behandeling kunnen oplopen tot 200.000 euro per patiënt. Als tbc niet goed wordt behandeld, kan de patiënt via hoesten of niezen weer anderen besmetten.

    Volgens KNCV kan de ziekte uiteindelijk ook weer in het Westen opduiken. In Nederland is tuberculose nu zo goed als uitgeroeid.

    Over tien jaar nieuw vaccin

    Wetenschappers verwachten over ongeveer tien jaar een nieuw bruikbaar vaccin tegen tbc te hebben. Het huidige vaccin, BCG, is gebrekkig. De organisatie Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI), gevestigd in Lelystad, heeft een plan gemaakt om het nieuwe vaccin te financieren. Naar verwachting is ongeveer 560 miljoen nodig. Regeringen zouden zich garant moeten stellen voor leningen. Het Europese Parlement heeft al positief gereageerd, stelt TBVI.

    Uppsala, Sweden | May 26, 2011 | Isconova moves forward with the clinical Phase I study of seasonal influenza by initiating vaccinations of the first study participants. A total of 110 healthy volunteers will take part in the study, scheduled to be reported during the first quarter of 2012. The study is a result of Isconova’s increased focus on human vaccines.

    During 2009, a clinical Phase I vaccination study against avian influenza, was performed through the PANFLUVAC project.
    This study was a major milestone achievement for Isconova as it was the first time Isconova’s adjuvant product Matrix M™ was tested in humans. The study results fulfilled all efficacy criteria and based on the positive results a study with a vaccine against seasonal influenza has now been initiated. The new study, carried out by Isconova, will investigate safety as well as examine whether Matrix M™ improves the effect on elderly people, a patient group that, due to a weakened immune system, often does not get sufficient protection with current marketed seasonal influenza vaccines.

    UNICEF promotes vaccine pricing transparency
    COPENHAGEN – 27 May 2011 - UNICEF is improving transparency around vaccine supply by making vaccine prices available on its website. As the largest buyer of children’s vaccines, this move is in line with UNICEF’s commitment to ensure that vaccine supply is sustainable and affordable. UNICEF’s partners in immunisation welcome the positive development.
    Information on market dynamics that influence vaccine uptake will be more publicly available, starting with prices at which companies sell vaccines to UNICEF. “Transparency is a core principle in itself and will support governments and partners in making more informed decisions,” said Shanelle Hall, Director of Supply Division, UNICEF. “Transparency will also help foster a competitive, diverse supplier base for global public goods.”
    Partners promoting vaccine affordability and availability agree that pricing is a multi-dimensional strategy. To reach the lowest prices, interventions must address supply and demand-side factors and risks. Transparency, along with strategic oversight of the vaccine market and prices, suggests that more children would have access to a wider range of vaccines, improving child survival.
    “As the main funder of vaccines procured by UNICEF, the GAVI Alliance strongly believes in timely, transparent and accurate information on pricing,” said Helen Evans, Interim CEO of the GAVI Alliance. “Transparency of pricing enhances partners and countries’ understanding of market dynamics, leading to better visibility of how their financial commitments translate into the number of children vaccinated and lives saved.     “Improved transparency on pricing is coming at a critical time, especially as vaccines against pneumonia and diarrhoea are being made available.     UNICEF undertook a consultation with all suppliers to ensure understanding and acceptance of the new policy prior to publishing vaccine prices online. All recent and future tenders include a clause that enables UNICEF to make awarded vaccine prices publicly available, in addition to pricing and contracting information already in the public domain on UNICEF’s website.
    The procurement of vaccines is UNICEF’s largest procurement activity, worth USD 757 million in 2010. Last year, UNICEF provided 2.5 billion doses of vaccines to 99 countries, reaching an estimated 58 per cent of the world’s children.
