Kennelijk zien boeren toekomst in biologische bedrijfsvoering.
USA: Organic product sales reach 26.6 billion $ in 2009 Source: OTA Sales of organic products in the USA continued to grow during 2009 despite the distressed state of the economy, the Organic Trade Association (OTA) revealed in releasing findings from its 2010 Organic Industry Survey. In fact, organic product sales in 2009 grew by 5.3 % overall, to reach 26.6 billion $. Of that figure, 24.8 billion $ represented organic food. The remaining 1.8 billion $ were sales of organic non-foods. “While total US food sales grew by only 1.6 % in 2009, organic food sales grew by 5.1 %. Meanwhile, organic non-food sales grew by 9.1 %, as opposed to total non-food sales which had a 1 % negative sales growth rate. These findings are indicative that even in tough times, consumers understand the benefits that organic products offer and will make other cuts before they give up products they value,” said Christine Bushway, OTA’s Executive Director. Experiencing the most growth, organic fruits and vegetables, which represent 38 % of total organic food sales, reached nearly 9.5 billion $ in sales in 2009, up 11.4 % from 2008 sales. Most notable, organic fruits and vegetables now represent 11.4 % of all US fruit and vegetable sales. Since the approval of the final National Organic Program rule published in 2000, sales of organic fruits and vegetables have grown from 2.55 billion $, representing approximately 3 % of all fruit and vegetable sales, to the nearly 9.5 billion $ level and 11.4 % penetration level. Meanwhile, during that time, organic food sales have grown from 6.1 billion $ to 24.8 billion $ in 2009, jumping from 1.2 % of all U.S. food sales to 3.7 %. The mass market channel had the lion’s share of organic food sales in 2009, with 54 % of organic sold through mainstream grocers, club stores and retailers. Natural retailers were next, with 38 % of total organic food sales. Although still representing a small percentage of sales, farmers’ markets, co-ops and CSA (community-supported agriculture) operations gained a lot of interest as consumers increasingly look for locally and regionally produced organic foods. In the organic non-food sector, organic supplements led, with 634 million $ in sales, representing 35 % of total organic non-food sales. Organic supplement sales were 12 % higher than in 2008. Organic fiber (linen and clothing) totaled 521 million $ in sales, up 10.4 %, while personal care products, at 459 million $, were up 3.7 % from 2008 sales. The 70-page report is now available for purchase. OTA 25.04.2010
In de UK een forse terugval in 2009 tov 2008 The current economic climate is said to be the toughest in the past 20 years, with trading conditions also being very difficult for many organic businesses. In 2009, sales of organic products in the UK were worth 1.84 billion £. Even though this represents a decline of almost 13 % in organic sales, organic milk, baby food and home cooking ingredients resisted the downward trend. Baby food even increased by almost 21 %, and organic beauty products increased by a third to 36 million £. (Picture: Unicorn Cooperative in Manchester) Despite this drop, sales of organic food were still more than three times higher than ten years before, and 50 % higher than five years ago, the Soil Association Market Report revealed, and organics have started to pick up again in the early months of 2010. The Soil Association predicts that they will return to growth again this year, with market expansion between 2 % and 5 %, and there are already some clear signs that this is happening. Tesco, for example, reports that its sales of organic vegetables are increasing again after more than a year of decline. Tesco and Waitrose, whose combined share of organic sales is more than 45 %, predict growth this year of 1 % and 3 – 5 % respectively. Rates of decline have slowed significantly in all categories of organic products in the first two months of 2010, with a return to growth for products as diverse as cider, flour, tea, herbs and spices and cooking sauces. (Picture: Tesco in London) Among the three supermarkets with the biggest organic market shares – Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose – it was Waitrose that proved the most resilient in the recession. Its organic sales fell by only 3.5 %. Multiple retailers accounted for 73.7 % of the organic market (loss in sales compared with 2008: 12.2 %), box schemes/home delivery/mail order for 8.4 % (- 9.8 %), farm shops for 1.8 % (- 13.8 %), farmers' markets for 1 % (- 20 %), catering for 0.9 % (- 10 %), and other independent retailers for 14.2 % (- 17.7 %). (Picture: box from Riverford Organic) Organic land in Great Britain has increased by 9 % and in January 2009 amounted to 743,516 hectares (4.3 % of all agricultural land). The amount of land in conversion to organic fell by 5.6 % to 149,103 hectares, suggesting that the rate of conversion is slowing. Dairy products remained the most popular category in 2009, accounting for 33 % of sales. Fresh fruit and vegetables accounted for 26 %, home cooking ingredients and beverages for 6 %, and red meat for 5 %. The three biggest categories of organic food in terms of retail sales value - dairy, fresh produce and fresh meat - fell by 5.5 %, 14.8 % and 22.7 % respectively in 2009. Meat and fresh produce were among the products where supermarket price differences between organics and non-organics were most pronounced. Price differences for organic milk and organic baby food were relatively modest. (Picture: Planet Organic in London) Shoppers reduced their spending – the proportion of households buying some organic food fell slightly from 88.9 % to 88.3 %. Leading retailers reduced organic ranges and shelf space. On average, consumers bought organics 16 times during the year, compared with 18 times in 2008, and spent 2.9 % less on organics per shopping trip. Consumers changed their habits – for instance, they went for canned and frozen alternatives to help avoid waste. Consequently, sales of organic fresh fish, for example, fell by 46 % in 2009, while sales of organic frozen fish more than tripled. Customers gave three main reasons for buying organics: they preferred natural/unprocessed food (40 %), they emphasised that the restricted use of pesticides was important (34 %), and they enjoyed the better taste of organics (30 %). For 2010, the Soil Association Market Report predicts that organics will again attract shoppers - from across the entire social spectrum. A significant coalition that established itself is Organic UK, with major pledgers like Yeo Valley, Rachel's, Organix and Omsco. The UK organic industry plans to run a three-year integrated marketing campaign to help increase sales of organic products and promote the “organic brand”. The campaign, which will include significant press advertising, aims to drive a 15 % increase in sales per year over the three years. Organic UK has already surpassed their initial target of 300,000 £ funding per year, which shows the enormous commitment from the industry to run a generic campaign. The funding application, which will double the campaign budget to more than 600,000 £, is now with the EU, and we will be advised on the outcome of the application in July 2010. In the meantime, the Organic Trade Board is running a PR based campaign to promote the organic industry, as a kickstart to the main campaign later this year. In Sweden, the sales figures for organics are still increasing significantly. In 2009, organic sales gained 18 % in retail, restaurants, schools and hospitals. This was revealed in a market survey that was presented at a recent seminar by the Swedish independent marketing organisation and website Ekoweb. The share of organics in total food sales in Sweden was 3.1 % (+ 0.4 % compared with 2008). 80 % of organic food sales took place in conventional retail, that is dominated by the three big chains Coop, Ica and Axfood. Swedish consumers are continuing to buy organics despite the crisis, and we see fairly even development over all the categories. Some categories like dairy products could have gained even more, but there has been a shortage of organic milk throughout the year, says Cecilia Ryegård, who is responsible for the market report. She is the editor of the Ekoweb website. (Photo: organic menus for school children are common in Sweden) Dairy products account for more than a third of total organic sales, and milk with 1.5 % fat has a share of 80 % of all organic dairy sales. This product also has the highest organic share - almost 10 % of the table milk with 1.5 % fat sold in Sweden is organic. The value of organic sales has increased by over 100 million euros to 700 million euros, with each Swedish consumer spending 61 euros on organic food in the retail business in 2009. More than a half of organic consumption in Sweden came from imported food. The organic share financed by the state – for example, schools and hospitals - is nearly 10 %, and the goal is 25 % by the end of 2010. Ekoweb’s forecast for 2010 is that organic sales will continue rising by 8 % to 12 % and that the Swedish organic market will exceed one billion euros in 2013. Consumer interest will continue to grow. According to Ms Ryegård (picture), a shortage of products is still a problem, especially in the organic milk sector, and this will prevent the organic dairy sector expanding by more than 10 % in 2010.
,,Kennelijk zien boeren toekomst in biologische bedrijfsvoering.''
Trockenware wie u. a. Suppen, Saucen und Paniermehl legten um 18 % zu. Mehr Informationen (auf französisch) sind hier erhältlich. 21.05.2010
Ook in Spanje in 2009 een opmerkelijke groei in het areaal biologisch; dit is volgens mij voor het overgrote deel produktie bestemd voor export binnen de EU, omzetcijfers over bio in spanje zelf staan niet in dit bericht Spain: Organic land grew by 22 % in 2009 Source: Ecoticias Organic land in Spain increased by almost 22 % in 2009, from over 1,3 million hectares in 2008 to over 1,6 million hectares in 2009, and the number of operaters amounted to 27,627 in 2009 (2008: 23,473), an increase of almost 18 % on the past year. These numbers were among the results presented by the Minister for Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, Elena Espinosa, based on data provided by the authorities of the autonomous communities. 2009 data shows that the surface increased in absolute terms and particularly in Castilla la Mancha (246,076 hectares, 105.63 % on 2008). Andalucia had an organic area of 866,799 hectares (+ 10.55 %), and Extremadura's organic land increased to 115,018 hectares (+ 34.04 %), followed by Catalonia (71,734 hectares, + 15.09 %), Aragón (66,730 hectares, with a slight decrease), Murcia (60,742 hectares, + 61.55 %), and Valencia (38,754 ha, + 7.30 %).
Consumers purchase more Fairtrade products Source: Fairtrade Foundation Consumers spent an estimated 3.4 billion euros on Fairtrade products in 2009 – a 15% increase over the previous year, the Fairtrade Foundation reports. “As 2009 began in the midst of the worst recession in 70 years, we worried that Fairtrade producers could lose sales. Instead, consumers across the globe bucked the trend and proved their deep commitment to giving producers a fair deal. Fairtrade sales grew in all countries,” says Rob Cameron, CEO of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International, the global Fairtrade body. Cocoa and sugar farmers experienced the strongest leap in sales, 35 % and 57 % respectively, thanks in part to 100 % commitments by global chocolate and confectionary brands including Cadbury Dairy Milk, Nestle’s Kit Kat, Green & Black’s, and Ben & Jerry’s. Sales in Fairtrade herbs and spices multiplied as FLO opened its scope to include all varieties of herbs and spices. Coffee, the pioneering Fairtrade product, grew steadily at 12 %, according to the Fairtrade Foundation. Fairtrade gained new customers outside of its traditional markets. Sales grew exponentially in Eastern Europe, South Africa, and many countries in the global south. Shoppers in established Fairtrade markets also bought more. The largest Fairtrade markets had strong growth: 12 % in the UK and 7 % in the USA. In Australia/ New Zealand, consumers increased their Fairtrade shopping by more than half (58 %). These sales made a big impact for the 1.2 million farmers and workers now selling through Fairtrade. They benefited from stable, higher-than-market income including Fairtrade Premium funds for development projects. Coffee farmers invested 14.5 million euros and banana producers over 12 million euros into community and business development. Fairtrade producers belong to 827 organizations in 60 countries.
Per juli 2009 bedroeg bio omzet in Ierland 124 miljoen euro tegen 104 miljoen in 2008. The organic sector in Ireland – marketing and promotion Author: Claudia Frost Sales of organic food in Ireland reached 124 million euros in the year to July 2009 (Bord Bia). 85 % of certified organic product sales are through mainstream retail outlets, with other channels like the organic supermarket, online shops, small stores, health food stores, farmers' markets, box schemes and farm shops accounting for the remaining 15 %. All the major supermarkets offer some organics. SuperValu/Centra and Tesco Ireland, for example, have a complete range of fresh and frozen organic products. Absolutely Organic operates as a wholesaler and also delivers organic products to end customers. The Irish organic retail market was estimated to be worth 104 milllion euros in 2008, 66 million euros in 2006, and 38 million in 2003. Up to 75 % in some categories of organic food sold in Ireland, particularly fruit and vegetables, are imported, despite the fact that much of this food could be produced in Ireland. Meat processors, for example, have repeatedly called for more production of lamb and especially beef to meet the growing demand in export markets in the UK and Germany. Production of vegetables ought to be increased as well. The Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association (IOFGA) is involved in promoting organic food and farming through its work with the media in the form of press releases and similar initiatives. Farmers markets are local events with some organic stalls and this helps the organic sector to make its products even better known.
misschien DAT This Ontwikkeling niet leuk is.
