Barclays, Royal Bank Fall to Europe's Cheapest in Subprime Rout By Jon Menon Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Barclays Plc's John Varley and Fred Goodwin of Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, who spent six months battling for control of ABN Amro Holding NV, now have something else in common: their banks are the cheapest among Europe's 25 biggest financial companies. Investors drove Barclays and Royal Bank shares down almost 30 percent in the past month on concern potential losses linked to the U.S. subprime mortgage market will hurt profits. Edinburgh-based Royal Bank trades at 5.6 times estimated earnings, the lowest in at least six years, and London-based Barclays is at 6.7 times profit. That compares to the average multiple of 9.8 for the 63-member Bloomberg Europe Banks and Financial Services Index. The stocks got battered because Chief Executive Officers Varley and Goodwin have provided little information to investors after record foreclosures on U.S. home loans to borrowers with poor credit histories roiled credit markets. The world's biggest financial institutions, including Citigroup Inc. in New York and Zurich-based UBS AG, reported about $45 billion of losses and writedowns, according to company reports. ``There's no point in arguing about valuations when people are so nervous,'' said Stuart Fowler, who oversees about $26.8 billion, including Barclays and Royal Bank, as head of U.K. equities at Axa Investment Managers in London. ``Under current conditions, you don't know they are cheap. One wouldn't expect massive writedowns, but only time will tell.'' Varley, 51, denied speculation about subprime-related losses after Barclays, Britain's third-largest, fell as much as 9.1 percent in London Stock Exchange trading on Nov. 9. ``If there were any substance in the rumors that I have been hearing in recent days, we would have been required to have made an announcement to the stock market,'' he said in a memo to staff. ``But we have not. That silence says a lot.'' Too Much Silence Silence is part of the problem, said Colin Morton, who helps oversee $27 billion at Rensburg Sheppards Plc in Leeds, northern England. Investors are in the dark because U.K. banks report earnings twice a year, rather than quarterly as in the U.S., Germany, France and Switzerland. Barclays and Royal Bank, the second-largest in the U.K., should disclose more details to reassure investors, Morton said. ``We don't know what is out there,'' said Morton. Rensburg Sheppards held about 26 million Barclays shares, or 0.4 percent, at the beginning of September, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Barclays and Royal Bank may write down a total of 2.1 billion pounds ($4.4 billion) in the second half, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analysts wrote in a Nov. 7 report. ``Concerns about liquidity, writedowns and reduced revenue expectations are weighing heavily amid a vacuum of hard information,'' analyst Antony Broadbent said in the note. Cascade of Writedowns Investors' concerns increased as losses at the world's biggest financial institutions escalated. Citigroup CEO Charles O. ``Chuck'' Prince III stepped down last week after the largest U.S. bank said it may have to cut the value of investments by as much as $11 billion, on top of $6.5 billion of third-quarter credit-market losses and writedowns. Merrill Lynch & Co., the biggest U.S. brokerage, pushed out CEO Stan O'Neal after cutting the value of securities by $8.4 billion. European companies have also been hit. UBS, Europe's biggest bank by assets, Frankfurt-based Deutsche Bank AG and Credit Suisse Group of Zurich reported a total of almost $10 billion in third-quarter writedowns and losses related to the subprime market. They reduced the value of loans used to finance leveraged buyouts, mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations, bonds created by packaging other debt securities. HSBC, HBOS UBS trades at 12.3 times profit estimates, compared with seven for Deutsche Bank, Germany's biggest, and 8.2 times for Credit Suisse. HSBC Holdings Plc, Europe's biggest bank by market value, said in March that subprime losses at its U.S. unit contributed to $10.6 billion of bad-loan provisions last year. The London- based company said it would take two or three years to work through the problem. HSBC trades at 11 times earnings. Edinburgh-based HBOS Plc, the U.K.'s largest mortgage lender, said in August it would provide emergency financing to its Grampian Funding LLC unit to repay commercial paper after credit markets seized up. Newcastle-based Northern Rock Plc in September was forced to seek emergency funding from the Bank of England, leading to the first run on a U.K. bank in more than a century. HBOS shares are priced at seven times earnings. Barclays Capital, the securities and asset-management division run by President Robert Diamond, generates more than a third of Barclays's pretax profit, driven by gains in structured credit, derivatives and loans for LBOs. LBO Loans Diamond said in a statement on Oct. 12 that earnings growth in the first nine months of the year ``was strong, with income and profits well ahead of last year.'' Barclays Capital, also the third-biggest underwriter of international bonds, increased pretax profit 33 percent in the first half. Royal Bank's securities unit is Europe's biggest arranger of loans for LBOs, Bloomberg data show. It increased operating profit by 19 percent to 2.2 billion pounds in the first half. Royal Bank, Barclays and Deutsche Bank have the smallest cushions for absorbing losses among European financial institutions, according to a Nov. 9 report by Citigroup analysts that ranked companies by their proportion of tangible equity to assets, a measure widely followed in the U.S. Royal Bank's Goodwin, 49, declined to comment. Banco Santander SA, Spain's biggest and the second-largest in Europe by market value, has gained 5.1 percent this year, and trades at 11.6 times earnings. The Spanish company teamed up with Royal Bank and Fortis to buy Amsterdam-based ABN Amro, the No. 1 Dutch bank, for 71.9 billion euros ($105.5 billion) beating Barclays. Standard Chartered Standard Chartered Plc, the U.K. bank that makes most of its profit in Asia, gained 11 percent this year. ``Standard Chartered is in the growth markets of the Far East and they are not in the nasty things that everyone thinks Barclays and Royal Bank may have on their balance sheets,'' said David Bradbury, who helps manage about $6 billion, including Royal Bank, Barclays and Standard Chartered stock, at Canada Life Ltd. in London. BNP Paribas SA, France's biggest, helped start the credit market contagion when it froze three funds on Aug. 9 because it could no longer find prices for some of their securities. The Paris-based company re-opened the funds between Aug. 28 and Aug. 30 and reported a 21 percent increase in third-quarter profit. It trades at 7.8 times earnings. Buying Opportunity Alan Beaney, who helps manage $2.1 billion at Principal Asset Management in Sevenoaks, England, said the declines are an opportunity. ``We are going to see a massive rebound,'' said Beaney, who has been buying Barclays and Royal Bank. The drop is ``massively overdone,'' he said. The shares
Een ouwe (8 november) van Bloomberg die ik terugvond op een andere site: Debt maturing in 270 days or less and backed by mortgages, credit-card loans and other assets fell $29.5 billion, or 3.4 percent, to a seasonally adjusted $845.2 billion for the week ended yesterday. "The psyche right now is getting worse and worse," said Neal Neilinger, co-founder and managing director of NSM Capital Management in Greenwich, Connecticut. "It's all risk aversion, and the trend is for people to buy T-bills." Simba Funding Corp. and Mane Funding Corp., asset-backed paper conduits set up by Amsterdam-based ING Groep NV, are being shut down because of the deteriorating market conditions, Bank of America Corp. said in a report yesterday. The conduits had 21 billion euros ($30.9 billion) of assets, according to the report. The debt is being put back on ING's balance sheet, the report said. mvg, E.

Game Volgens Van Dijkhuizen is ‘transparancy the name of the game’.
