Chinese rebar returns to Singapore, Hong Kong
    222 Views

The rebar import market continues to be sluggish in East Asia, Kallanish notes. Importers are full and not in a hurry to restock. There have been no new developments except the return of Chinese rebar to the market, regional market participants say.

“A trader is offering [theoretical-weight and for 10-40mm diameter] rebar from a range of second-tier Chinese mills at around $600/tonne cfr,” a Singapore buyer says. Malaysian blast furnace rebar is offered at around $600/t delivered-at-place Singapore – equivalent to $590/t cfr Singapore. These offers are for November shipments.

A trader’s position cargo of 25,000 tonnes of theoretical-weight rebar from the Middle East for October shipment is being offered at $580/t cfr Singapore. The trader previously sold last month 14,000t of rebar from Oman for prompt, early-September shipment at $572/t cfr Singapore. "Most Singapore players, including us, are full of rebar stock," an importer says. Buyers may nevertheless book if prices drop, which is more likely now that Chinese rebar is coming into the market, he adds.

Kallanish assessed BS4449 500B 10-40mm diameter rebar at $580-590/t cfr Singapore theoretical weight, unchanged on-week.

A certain Chinese mill meanwhile offered and sold certain sizes of actual-weight rebar at $600/t cfr Hong Kong last week. “There were only 3-4 sizes offered,” a trader says. The size range is probably 10-32mm diameter.

Oman rebar for October shipment is being offered at $602/t cfr Hong Kong actual weight, importing sources in Hong Kong observe. This matches with $580/t cfr for theoretical weight, a buyer says. “No one will get an October cargo now as we are all fully booked. I think we can wait for December shipments,” he adds.

Stainless Steel Vacuum Chamber is Heart of IETR Fusion Reactor

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:00 am

Worldsteel in a recent article said that a powerful new steel-built tokamak reactor is aiming to finally achieve the holy grail of fusion-powered electricity generation. Deep in the French region of Provence, chosen for its favourable geological, hydrological, and seismic conditions, as well as water and electricity access, sits a sprawling 180-hectare facility that houses the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. Identical to the processes that power our sun, fusion occurs when two hydrogen atoms smash together and fuse into a single helium atom. This generates huge amounts of energy without producing radioactive fission products. Creating this process presents a serious engineering challenge, as the reactions must be precisely controlled in a space where massive amounts of energy are being generated.

At the ITER facility, construction is underway on the world’s biggest tokamak reactor. At the heart of this experimental machine, which is based on a Soviet model developed in the 60s, is a torus-shaped vacuum chamber. Weighing 5,200 tonnes and with a volume of 1,400 cubic meters the vacuum chamber is by far the largest of its kind, making it easier for the physicists that operate it to control the reactions needed to generate viable fusion power.

ITER’s experiments will take place inside this steel-built vacuum vessel, which contains the fusion reactions and is hermetically sealed, acting as the primary safety containment barrier. Here hydrogen fuel is subjected to immense heat and pressure, turning it into the hot, electrically charged gas known as plasma. This vacuum environment provides radiation shielding and supports plasma stability, while cooling water systems that are circulated between its double steel walls safely remove the heat generated while the reactor is active. This is vitally important as temperatures of between 150 and 300 million degree Celsius are required for fusion. The doughnut shape of the interior allows the plasma particles inside to circle continuously without touching the walls. This superhot plasma is contained and controlled in the tokamak reactor by magnetic fields produced by 10,000 tonnes of superconducting magnets.

Able to produce stronger fields than conventional magnets when kept at temperatures of minus 269 degree Celsius, ITER uses ‘high-performance, internally cooled superconductors’ in which superconducting strands are bundled together and contained in a structural steel jacket. This means of generating magnetic fields is also cheaper and less-energy consuming than alternatives, making it the only viable option for the massive magnet systems needed to support fusion power.

The vacuum vessel and its superconducting magnet system are all contained within the ITER cryostat, which provides an ultra-low temperature vacuum space. At 16,000 cubic meters, it is the largest stainless steel high-vacuum pressure chamber ever built. The extreme temperature differences contained in the reactor make stainless steel an ideal choice. Able to maintain performance at high and low temperatures, steel’s high ductility and toughness make it an irreplaceable part of ITER.

ABB Partners with Samotics to Expand Condition Monitoring Services

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:05 am

ABB and Netherland based leading provider of ESA technology Samotics have entered a strategic long-term partnership to provide enhanced condition monitoring services. The approach will leverage each company’s capabilities to deliver more insight into machine health and energy efficiency. As a first step, ABB will integrate Samotics’ plug-and-play monitoring solution into its digital portfolio. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Samotics’ technology is complementary to the well-established ABB Ability Condition Monitoring service for powertrains, a sensor-based solution that analyzes the health and performance of rotating equipment. Samotics’ SAM4 technology, based on electrical signature analysis, will expand ABB’s application of asset health monitoring of motor-driven industrial equipment as it does not rely on mounting sensors in the field. This means that SAM4 can be deployed on machines in harsh and submerged environments.

Ultimately, developing a system that uses both datasets will provide industrial operators with a more detailed view of asset health so that they can make better decisions to optimize maintenance, boost reliability and reduce downtime.

Samotics has established SAM4 as a robust and scalable system. It is already being implemented across the wastewater and water, steel, and chemical sectors and has established a fast-growing base with thousands of assets monitored.

ABB plans to roll out Samotics technology to customers before the end of 2022 as part of its growing service portfolio for rotating equipment.

BASF Coatings has inaugurated a new research center for electrophoretic dip coating at its headquarters in Münster-Hiltrup in Germany. The electrophoretic or cathodic dip coat, e coat, protects the surfaces, edges and cavities of a car body against corrosion, and evens out the roughness of the pre-treated metal surfaces, thus providing the optimum basis for the application of the subsequent paint layers.

The center will mainly be used for the CathoGuard 800 e-coat technology, which has already been applied to more than 100 million vehicles worldwide. The product does without organic tin compounds and has a very low solvent content. An optimized film thickness distribution permits material to be saved and, at the same time, guarantees protection of the entire body thanks to its good throwing power. The product also contributes to sustainability by reducing wastewater, which in turn reduces the amount of fresh water required for the process.

SARRALLE Developing Hydrogen Fired Reheating Furnaces

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:20 am

Spain headquartered technology supplier SARRALLE is developing new technologies, based on the application of hydrogen in the steelmaking processes to reduce CO2 emissions and also to reduce production costs. One of the steelmaking processes that consume the most natural gas is the Reheating Furnace and SARRALLE has already started working on this process to ensure a process that is more adapted to the new challenges that they are already visualizing and that they will have to face in the following years.

SARRALLE, within the framework of the H-ACERO project, is developing a reheating furnace prototype for the evaluation of hydrogen combustion technologies. The prototype allows the installation of various types of burners, including air-fired burner technologies, and oxy-combustion technologies, using both natural gas and hydrogen, or mixtures or both gases, as fuel. The burners to be evaluated will allow temperatures of 1200 degree Celsius to be reached in the combustion chamber.

The transition from normal operation with natural gas and air, to oxy-combustion, represents a fuel saving of between 10-50% depending on the current operation of the equipment, with its consequent reduction in CO2 emissions. The introduction of hydrogen as fuel will mean an even greater reduction in CO2 emissions, with higher energy efficiency if oxygen is used as an oxidant. The presence of hydrogen as fuel, as well as the use of air or oxygen as an oxidizer, results in different concentrations of water vapor in the combustion atmosphere, as well as the modification of the CO & CO2 balances and the partial pressure of oxygen in the furnace.

These new combustion atmospheres can produce changes in the refractory and in the steel that must be characterized and interpreted. The reheating furnace prototype that SARRALLE is developing enables the placement of various refractories, allowing their evaluation under different combustion atmospheres, as well as the placement of steel samples inside the combustion chamber for their evaluation. The equipment includes instrumentation for monitoring refractory temperatures at different points in the furnace, as well as the steel samples introduced into the combustion chamber. In addition, the equipment will have a vision camera that allows visualizing the development of the flame inside the chamber. It also allows the monitoring of the temperature and composition of the gases.

Metinvest May Build DRI-Fed EAF Steel Plant in Europe

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:29 am

Ukrainian mining and steel company Metinvest is studying options for the construction somewhere in the EU of a plant to process the company’s iron ore into direct reduced iron and then convert it into steel. Metinvest CEO Mr Yuriy Ryzhenkov in an interview with NV Business said “Initially, Metinvest had been considering expanding rolling capacity at its plate and coil mill Ferriera Valsider in the province of Verona, Italy, or building a finishing facility to process slab shipped from Azovstal Iron and Steel Works in Mariupol. Now, with Azovstal slabs unavailable for the foreseeable future, the company is looking at shipping iron ore to the EU instead, converting it into DRI and then smelting it into steel. Routes for iron ore transportation into the EU that are already in place could be expanded if necessary.”

The company had already been developing the production of DR-grade pellets at its Central iron ore mining and beneficiation complex in Dnipropetrovsk region, eastern Ukraine, since 2020, with 2021 output reaching 2.2 million tonne, and before the war it was looking to set up a 5 million tonnes per year capacity DR-grade pellet plant at its Severny, or Northern, GOK too. However, although Severny has recently tested the production of high-quality pellets, as a prerequisite of improving it further to DR-grade material, implementing the project in full requires investments, and these will not be possible while the war is ongoing.

In early 2022, Metinvest said it intended to replace the majority of its blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces at its two Mariupol-based steelworks Azovstal and Ilyich with electric arc furnaces by 2040, with the first EAF and at least one DRI module expected online by 2030.

Tata Steel to Supply Zeremis Carbon Lite for Hardt Hyperloop

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:31 am

Tata Steel Europe and Hardt Hyperloop have signed a contract for the delivery of Zeremis Carbon Lite, steel with an allocated carbon footprint reduction of up to 100% at InnoTrans in Berlin. The lower CO2 intensity is independently verified by assurance expert DNV. The purpose of Zeremis Carbon Lite is to accelerate CO2 emission saving projects even faster and we are looking at every possibility, for example the use of bio-coal, green HBI and hydrogen in our current assets. But we will also push the boundaries of scrap usage even further.

Steel is the essential material needed to build strong, lightweight tubes for the hyperloop that can withstand an internal low air pressure with sufficient rigidity. Therefore, Tata Steel joined forces with steelmaker POSCO from Korea in 2020 to work on the development of high-quality steel grades customized for this very purpose. The ultimate goal is to achieve a 50% weight reduction compared to a tube with conventional technology. This is done by developing new steel qualities for spirally welded pipes, but also by creating completely new pipe designs.

Tata Steel has been supporting Hardt Hyperloop since its first stages. In July 2022, Tata Steel announced the delivery of the first batch of a new steel product tailor-made for the hyperloop. The first tubes that were made using the certified low CO2 steel will now be field tested in the European Hyperloop Center in Groningen, the Netherlands.

People are travelling further and more frequently than ever before. At the same time, there is a growing need and awareness to reduce energy consumption and transport emissions. Tata Steel is therefore working in close cooperation with customers and partners to bring new, fast and energy-efficient mobility concepts to life. One of those technologies is Hardt Hyperloop, a high-speed, sustainable transportation system for people and goods.

ISSB Expects UK Steel Output to Fall below 7 Million Tonnes in2022

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:34 am

The 1st UK Steel Forum took place in London at the iconic Ironmongers’ Hall, with links to the iron trade for over 700 years. UK-based International Steel Statistics Bureau Commercial Manager Mr Steve Andrews said that “The UK steel industry is set to produce at a record low this year, its lowest since World War II, and it’s hard to say if 2023 will see an upturn. Output is set to fall to below 7 million tonnes of crude steel in 2022, from 7.2 million tonnes in 2021 and 7 million tonnes in 2020 when it suffered a COVID-19-related markets slump.”

Mr Andrews said “In the UK, the second half of the year will be subdued in terms of market demand, particularly in the automotive sector, while rampant inflation will have a knock-on effect on consumer confidence and spending.”

Mr Andrews added “UK steel production has been falling for decades. In 2000 UK production was 15 million tonnes and now it’s half that level. UK lost some capacity around six years ago on Teesside, with the closure of the Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK steel slab plant.”

Other factors seen impacting the health of the UK steel sector this year are the increasing energy costs which have more than offset the benefits of lower raw material costs, a large disparity between prices in Asia and Europe and higher interest rates threatening mortgage availability. ISSB figures show that in 2020 it cost just over GBP 400, including electricity and other costs, to produce a metric ton of long steel via an electric arc furnace in the UK, and in August 2022 it cost around GBP790. Now, even with the energy price cap introduced on 21 September by the UK government for the October 2022-March 2023 period it will cost around GBP 970, which is currently above average market prices for long products in Northern Europe.

UK Steel Forum was co-organized by EUROMETAL and the 5 trade associations BCSA, BIRFA, ISTA, NASS and UK Steel brought together 85 participants.

    26 Sep, 2022, 6:36 am

Reuters reported that even with four wind turbines and over 50,000 solar panels at its site in eastern Belgium, stainless steel maker Aperam has been forced to halt production as surging energy prices bite. The company is now paying for energy in a month what it used to pay in a year and has idled a facility that would normally be melting stainless steel scrap and converting it into slabs, employing about 300 workers. Aperam's CEO Stainless Europe Mr Bernard Hallemans told Reuters “We have temporary levers to overcome a certain period but this cannot last for years. If this does, we will see a de-industrialisation of sectors like ours and Europe will also, for base metals like ours, become dependent on imports.”

Mr Hallemans said “Summer maintenance would normally cap production at about 80% of capacity, but the figure is around 50% since late June, after Russia sharply cut gas supplies to Europe, sending already inflated prices to new records. Europe must come up with answers. The potential payout producers such as Aperam would receive is unclear and could be months away, with energy prices sky-high.”

The 1,200 employees at Aperam's Genk plant risk temporary unemployment, with take-home pay cut by at least a fifth just as inflation hits 10%. The plant has suffered temporary stoppages before, notably during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

Spiraling energy costs have forced steel makers to cut output across Europe, threatening mass plant shutdowns some warn could be permanent in a sector that employs more than 300,000 and contributes tens of billions of euros to the region's economy. And the list is growing every week
