Herning, Denmark, 21 September 2022 – Today, the European Commission granted IPCEI status to the HySynergy 2.0 project led by Everfuel A/S. The IPCEI status enables public funding of the second phase of the HySynergy facility which is developed with Crossbridge Energy Fredericia as a partner. HySynergy 2.0 will produce green hydrogen used to decarbonise industrial processes and transportation.

The project was last year shortlisted by the Danish government as one of two Danish power-to-X projects eligible for public funding if they received IPCEI status by the Commission. Both projects have now received Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) status as projects that contribute to job creation and sustainable economic growth in the EU. The Danish government has allocated a total of DKK 850 million of funding for the two shortlisted projects.

“The European Commission’s approval of HySynergy 2.0 is a key contribution to the commercialisation of green hydrogen and decarbonising of industry and transport in the EU. We are very pleased with the recognition of the project and the opportunities that comes with the IPCEI status. It is a testimony to the maturity of the HySynergy PtX project and the scale of impact it will have. IPCEI funding will also be a major milestone as we progress towards final investment decision,” says Jacob Krogsgaard, the CEO of Everfuel.

The Commission today approved up to EUR 5.2 billion of public support by thirteen Member States as part of this second IPCEI round to support research and innovation, first industrial deployment and construction of relevant infrastructure in the hydrogen value chain. IPCEI Hy2Use, includes 29 companies with activities in one or more member states participating in 35 projects. The public funding is expected to unlock additional EUR 7 billion in private investments. Further information amount of aid to individual participants will be made available in due course.

The first phase of the HySynergy project is a 20 MW electrolyser facility in Fredericia, Denmark, which is expected to produce the first hydrogen late this year. HySynergy 2.0, which has now been granted IPCEI status, will extend the existing facility with 300 MW electrolyser capacity. Phase II of the project will consist of three sections of 100 MW each. The public funding that follows the IPCEI status is connected to building the first 100 MW of the second phase.

The HySynergy project aims at producing large quantities of green hydrogen to be used in industry processes by the adjacent Crossbridge Energy refinery and other partners as well as for mobility purposes at Everfuel stations.

“HySynergy Phase II is a giant milestone and key to the new and greener future for energy production in Denmark. Hydrogen opens the door and HySynergy Phase II accelerate this process,” says Finn Schousboe, the CEO Crossbridge Energy A/S.

By 2025, when the 300 MW electrolyser facility is established, HySynergy will facilitate an annual reduction of up to 500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from the mobility sector and the industry, which corresponds to 11% of the total carbon emissions from the Danish land-based transport sector.

HYBRIT’s Pilot Facility for Hydrogen Storage Operational

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    23 Sep, 2022, 6:39 am

Swedish steel maker SSAB, iron ore miner LKAB and European renewable leader Vattenfall's HYBRIT pilot facility for the storage of fossil-free hydrogen gas is now in operation in Luleå in Sweden. The rock cavern storage facility is the first of its kind in the world for storing fossil-free hydrogen gas. The two-year test period will now start and continue until 2024, which means that HYBRIT has taken another important step in developing the overall value chain for fossil-free iron and steel production.

After the inauguration of the pilot facility in June, initial pressure tests were conducted with water, which confirmed the facility’s mechanical stability, tightness and pressure capacity. The storage facility was then filled with hydrogen gas and even reached the maximum operating pressure of 250 bar. The commissioning of the pilot facility in Svartöberget has shown that the storage facility works according to its design and meets all safety requirements. The technology for the storage of gas in an underground lined rock cavern involves the cavern walls being lined with a sealing layer. LRCs have been thoroughly tested with natural gas, but the pilot facility in Luleå is the first in the world to test the technology with repeated filling and emptying of hydrogen gas.

The pilot facility's size is 100 cubic meters, and at a later stage it may be necessary to keep 100,000 to 120,000 cubic meters of pressurized hydrogen gas in full scale storage. This means that we can store up to 100 GWh of electricity in the form of hydrogen gas, which is enough to supply a full-size sponge iron factory for about three to four days.

The HYBRIT initiative was launched in 2016 by the three owners; SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall. The hydrogen storage facility will play a very important role in the overall value chain for fossil-free iron and steel production. By producing fossil-free hydrogen gas when there is a lot of electricity, for example when it is very windy, and using stored hydrogen gas when the electricity system is under strain, will ensure production of sponge iron, the raw material behind fossil-free steel.

    23 Sep, 2022, 6:59 am

Italy’s classification society RINA has awarded type approval to the safety concept of Freudenberg e-Power Systems’ methanol-powered fuel cell system at an official handover ceremony held at the maritime trade fair SMM in Hamburg in Germany.

Freudenberg e-Power Systems’ innovative approach to using methanol for marine applications combines highly efficient fuel reforming technology with a long-life PEM fuel cell in a modular, scalable system unit. It generates hydrogen via steam reforming, which then reacts with oxygen from the air in the fuel cell to produce the electrical energy needed for both propulsion and the ship’s electrical system. The heat required for the reformer can be obtained directly from the waste heat of the fuel cells. Fuel cell stack, reformer and control electronics as well as all components for media supply are located in a prefabricated, modular unit. This containment design facilitates easy installation on board.

    23 Sep, 2022, 6:59 am

Siemens Smart Infrastructure and Shell Global Solutions International have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on developing low-carbon and highly efficient energy solutions that support the energy transition. The agreement will focus on projects that produce green hydrogen for industrial applications at Shell and its customers, as well as enhancing collaboration in the areas of biofuels and circular chemistry. Under the MoU, Siemens and Shell will create solutions that increase energy efficiency and generate sustainable power, consisting of, but not limited to, digitalization, efficient networks, and the production, distribution, and application of green hydrogen.

The partnership, inked with Siemens’ Electrification and Automation business unit, has the potential to strengthen synergies for both parties. While Siemens intends to work with Shell to accelerate the latter’s transition towards net-zero operations, Shell seeks to supply Siemens and its affiliates with low carbon products that reduce emissions across the supply chain, in Siemens’ operations, and in the use phase of Siemens products, consisting of but not limited to supply of biofuels.

The MoU stems from this relationship and from working together on several projects since 2010. One of the key milestones advancing green hydrogen is the recently announced construction of Shell’s Holland Hydrogen 1 project on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. With a capacity of 200 megawatts and 60 tons of hydrogen per day, HH1 is planned to be one of the largest green hydrogen production plants in the world and the biggest in Europe. Siemens’ Electrification and Automation business plays an important role in the project’s planning, construction, and execution, as the power distribution and substation automation supplier. It will also be involved in the operation of the plant, which is scheduled to go on-line in 2025, through a servicing contract. Hydrogen Station for Trucks Planned at Port of Gothenburg

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    23 Sep, 2022, 7:01 am

A hydrogen filling station for heavy vehicles is being planned at the Port of Gothenburg. The filling station will be right next to the entrance to the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal,– one of the places in Sweden most intensively used by trucks. The station will supply green hydrogen only and is set to be completed in September 2023.

Hydrogen capacity: 1,500 kg, approximately 35 trucks per day

2 vehicles can fill up simultaneously

    Investment cost: SEK 35 million

Financed in full by the Swedish Energy Agency

The station will be located just by Gate 6, the entrance to Gothenburg RoRo Terminal. The short approach road that leads to this gate is one of the most heavily trafficked roads in Sweden, used by about 350,000 trucks every year. As Stena Line is expected to relocate its current Germany and Denmark terminals to Arendal, just to the west of the ro-ro terminal in the coming years, traffic will increase additionally in the immediate vicinity.

The neighbouring terminals also see opportunities with the proposed filling station. For customers using the terminals, and for their own loading and unloading operations.

In addition to Nilsson Energy’s new hydrogen filling station, another station is also being planned in the port area. In 2023/2024, Circle K and OG Clean Fuels will be opening a hydrogen filling station, just five minutes to the east of Nilsson Energy’s station. Having two independent hydrogen filling stations in the port area is more than twice as important as having just one, says Viktor Allgurén:

The initiative to build a network of hydrogen filling stations in the port is part of the Tranzero Initiative – an initiative to reduce emissions initiated by the Gothenburg Port Authority, Volvo Group, Scania and Stena Line. The goal is to accelerate the transport sector’s transition to fossil-free alternatives such as green hydrogen. The sights are set on both road and marine transport operations.

Nilsson Energy is a Swedish systems integrator and supplier of turnkey renewable energy systems using hydrogen as an energy carrier. The product portfolio is based on decentralised hydrogen production from renewable sources. The company encompasses the whole value chain, including servicing and maintenance. In addition to the station at the Port of Gothenburg, Nilsson Energy is involved in a number of projects for the continued expansion of decentralised hydrogen filling stations, working together with vehicle manufacturers to secure the transition to sustainable, fossil-free transport operations.

Germany’s largest green hydrogen generation plant at Wunsiedel in Upper Franconia has been commissioned by Siemens. Up to 1,350 tonnes of green hydrogen can now be generated annually from renewable solar and wind power in the Wunsiedel Energy Park. Hydrogen is generated by an electrolyzer, with a total capacity of 8.75 megawatts, from Siemens Energy’s latest and most powerful product line. The “Silyzer 300” is based on proton exchange membrane technology, which is optimally suited for operation with renewable energies.

The hydrogen will be used primarily in the region’s industrial and commercial enterprises, but also in road transport. With this amount of hydrogen, 400 40-ton hydrogen-powered trucks could, assuming a regional distance of 150 kilometers per day, drive for an entire year without emitting any CO2. By using the hydrogen generated in Wunsiedel and the related replacement of fossil fuels, annual CO2 emissions can be cut by up to 13,500 tons.

The hydrogen will be distributed by truck trailers on a decentralized basis to end customers mainly within a radius of around 150 to 200 kilometers (Northern Bavaria, Thuringia, Southern Saxony and Western Bohemia). In addition, following the construction of an H2 filling station at the Wunsiedel Energy Park, scheduled for completion in 2023, the regional fleet of commercial vehicles can be decarbonized.

As general contractor, Siemens Smart Infrastructure was responsible for the construction of the hydrogen plant and the creation of an intelligently monitored and controlled power grid.

Raven Chooses Watlow as Partner for New Hydrogen Reactor

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    23 Sep, 2022, 7:04 am

Industrial thermal systems manufacturer Watlow is selected by Raven SR as a thermal technology partner for the field trial of their non-combustion equilibrium Steam/CO2 Reforming SR2 unit which converted methane to transportation-grade hydrogen. The SR2 reactor successfully performed at a rate exceeding other commercially available technologies for hydrogen production from methane. Raven’s patented steam / carbon dioxide reforming process transforms all waste – biomass, municipal solid waste, bio-solids, industrial waste, sewage, medical waste and unwanted, unusable, excess, low methane natural gas – into synthetic gas, which is then converted into renewable energy products including hydrogen, sulfur and nitrogen-free Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuels and additives and solvents.

The SR2 reactor utilizes Watlow’s zero-emissions electric heater technology to power Raven’s reductive chemical reaction, which eliminates combustion and is, therefore, a much cleaner process that converts all feedstock into fuel rather than incinerating it.

Additionally, Watlow engineers developed a special IoT device providing a cloud-connected dashboard for data logging, near real-time monitoring of system output and visualization of thermal performance. The solution also provides a foundation for diagnostic and predictive analytics of the system at scale.

Raven’s technology provides a carbon-free solution for both the creation and consumption of energy. Hydrogen can be produced with no harmful emissions to power fuel cells that can create electricity with only heat and water vapor as the byproducts. Raven SR plans to bring its first commercial Steam/CO2 Reforming production facility online in early 2023 at the West Contra Costa sanity landfill in Richmond, Calif., where it will convert organic green waste into transportation-grade hydrogen for local customers.

SARRALLE Developing Hydrogen Fired Reheating Furnaces

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 6:20 am

Spain headquartered technology supplier SARRALLE is developing new technologies, based on the application of hydrogen in the steelmaking processes to reduce CO2 emissions and also to reduce production costs. One of the steelmaking processes that consume the most natural gas is the Reheating Furnace and SARRALLE has already started working on this process to ensure a process that is more adapted to the new challenges that they are already visualizing and that they will have to face in the following years.

SARRALLE, within the framework of the H-ACERO project, is developing a reheating furnace prototype for the evaluation of hydrogen combustion technologies. The prototype allows the installation of various types of burners, including air-fired burner technologies, and oxy-combustion technologies, using both natural gas and hydrogen, or mixtures or both gases, as fuel. The burners to be evaluated will allow temperatures of 1200 degree Celsius to be reached in the combustion chamber.

The transition from normal operation with natural gas and air, to oxy-combustion, represents a fuel saving of between 10-50% depending on the current operation of the equipment, with its consequent reduction in CO2 emissions. The introduction of hydrogen as fuel will mean an even greater reduction in CO2 emissions, with higher energy efficiency if oxygen is used as an oxidant. The presence of hydrogen as fuel, as well as the use of air or oxygen as an oxidizer, results in different concentrations of water vapor in the combustion atmosphere, as well as the modification of the CO & CO2 balances and the partial pressure of oxygen in the furnace.

These new combustion atmospheres can produce changes in the refractory and in the steel that must be characterized and interpreted. The reheating furnace prototype that SARRALLE is developing enables the placement of various refractories, allowing their evaluation under different combustion atmospheres, as well as the placement of steel samples inside the combustion chamber for their evaluation. The equipment includes instrumentation for monitoring refractory temperatures at different points in the furnace, as well as the steel samples introduced into the combustion chamber. In addition, the equipment will have a vision camera that allows visualizing the development of the flame inside the chamber. It also allows the monitoring of the temperature and composition of the gases.

Southwest Gas Truckee Hydrogen Project Moves Forward

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am

Southwest Gas Corporation is translating purpose into action with its proposed hydrogen-blending demonstration project filed with the California Public Utilities Commission on 8 September 2022. The Project was submitted as part of a Joint Application with Southern California Gas Company and San Diego Gas and Electric Company that also filed proposed hydrogen projects within their respective service territories. Southwest Gas Project proposal, if approved, will produce vital information toward implementing meaningful, practical and sustainable energy solutions with measurable impact toward the Truckee Town Council's goal of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and further contributes to Southwest Gas' larger efforts and integral role in supporting economy-wide climate and environmental goals. The Company's Project aims to establish critical knowledge complementary to the other joint utility Applicants' demonstration projects while uniquely targeting hydrogen-blending scenarios in extreme cold weather and high-elevation conditions, such as those experienced in the Truckee area. Hydrogen, an efficient energy carrier like natural gas, can be blended with traditional natural gas or renewable natural gas. Yet knowledge gaps exist surrounding the optimal percentages of hydrogen blends in extreme climates – Southwest Gas' Project will help to close these knowledge gaps to ensure safety, system integrity and reliability. Moreover, the Company has committed to employing new sustainable technologies to assist the Town of Truckee in achieving their environmental sustainability priorities. Given the extreme weather spectrum across California, the Town of Truckee presents a unique opportunity to determine optimal hydrogen-blend percentages in extremely cold areas. The mountain community in the northern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range sits at an elevation of 5,817 feet and experiences average low temperatures below freezing eight months out of the year. These climates necessitate higher heating demands and make use of different end-use appliances such as generators, radiant heaters, furnaces and boilers. Over an 18-month period, the Project will test a blend of 5% to 20% hydrogen with natural gas, flowing through plastic and steel pipelines. The hydrogen used in this test is created through the process called electrolysis which separates hydrogen from oxygen in water – a low- to no-carbon generating process that releases oxygen beneficially into our atmosphere and stores hydrogen for use, further reducing GHG emissions. This Project aims to provide critical data that will help the creation of the nation's first hydrogen-injection standard for natural gas operators.

POSCO Holdings, Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical, Malaysian Sarawak Economic Development Corporation Energy and Malaysian Sarawak Energy have signed MoU for Green Hydrogen Business for Sarawak's green H2 business. With the MOU signed, the five parties agreed to conduct joint research for a stable power supply under the H2biscus project, which will use min. 900MW of power, and check the preparations for substation, power line, and other infrastructural facilities. Based on the result of the co-research, the ongoing feasibility study will be finalized by this year, aiming to start production of green H2 from the end of 2027.

The green hydrogen produced from the Sarawak project will amount to 200,000 tons. Except for 7,000 tons used in Malaysia, the rest of the H2 will be moved to Korea in the form of ammonia, which is expected to help the country facilitate the national H2 economy and achieve the carbon neutrality goal. In particular, POSCO Holdings, Samsung Engineering, and Lotte Chemical will continue to develop green H2 projects overseas to take the lead in introducing green hydrogen to Korea.
