2 Green Freeports Approved in Scotland Strategic Research Institute Published on : 24 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am The UK and Scottish Governments have unveiled a new agreement to establish two Green Freeports in Scotland with a GBP 52 million investments and hydrogen to play a major role within these. Scotland boasts significant renewable energy potential and, with an abundance of offshore and onshore wind farms currently being developed, hydrogen production projects are being coupled with these to produce green hydrogen. For instance, the Scottish Cluster is targeting a hydrogen production capacity of 3.7GW by the mid-2030’s produced from wind farms. A green freeport is a large zoned area within a defined boundary which includes a rail, sea or airport. Operators and businesses in the zone can benefit from a package of tax and other incentives through a combination of devolved and reserved levers. To do so, they will have to show that they contribute to objectives defined within the prospectus. These will include contributing towards a just transition to net zero emissions by 2045 and supporting the creation of high quality employment opportunities with good salaries and conditions. By introducing green freeports, it provides a basis to integrate hydrogen technologies for maritime use in addition to creating supply and demand for the clean energy carrier. The green freeports will have net-zero targets at the heart as prospective bidders will have to make a pledge to reach Net Zero by 2045. The bidding process will open in Spring, closing in Summer, after which the bids will be assessed, and successful locations announced. It’s hoped that the new sites will be operational by Spring 2023.
Airbus to Study Hydrogen Hub Potential in Singapore Strategic Research Institute Published on : 24 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am Airbus has signed a Cooperation Agreement with Changi Airport Group, global industrial gases and engineering company Linde and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore to study the potential for a future hydrogen hub in the city state. It reflects the four partners’ shared ambition to leverage their respective expertise to support the decarbonization of the aviation industry and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Under the collaboration, the partners will look at how hydrogen can be transported, stored and delivered to aircraft at existing and new airports. This expands on an earlier agreement with CAAS to evaluate hydrogen infrastructures, widening the scope to include the airport and energy provider. Airbus will provide characteristics on aircraft configuration and fleet energy usage, insight on hydrogen-powered aircraft for ground operations, and data on the estimated hydrogen aircraft ramp-up at airports. The use of hydrogen to power future aircraft is not only expected to reduce significantly aircraft emissions in the air, but could also help decarbonise air transport activities on the ground. In 2020 Airbus launched the “Hydrogen Hub at Airports” programme to jumpstart research into infrastructure requirements and low-carbon airport operations, across the entire value chain.
H2Fly Ready for Hydrogen-Powered Commercial Aviation Strategic Research Institute Published on : 24 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am With more than a decade of development work under its belt, hydrogen propulsion pioneer H2Fly is now advancing efforts on a sixth-generation powertrain that it says has the potential to go into commercial service with 40-seat airliners on flights of up to around 2,500 km. The Germany-based company has already had talks with several airlines about their requirements and in the next few months expects to announce partnerships and plans for the next stage of testing of a sustainable powertrain incorporating fuel cells and liquid hydrogen. In 2020, H2Fly received a permit to fly its HY4 technology demonstrator aircraft powered by a 130 kW hydrogen-electric propulsion system. The company, formed in 2014 by five engineers from the German Aerospace Center in Stuttgart and the University of Ulm, conducted 76 flights, with some sorties lasting an hour or two. In July 2021, H2Fly and Munich-based Deutsche Aircraft agreed to collaborate on plans to convert a 1990s-vintage Dornier 328 regional airliner to hydrogen power. The partners are working to be ready to start flight testing the former twin turboprop in 2025 as part of a timeline that H2Fly founder and CEO Josef Kallo told FutureFlight could lead to an aircraft being certified under EASA’s Part CS-25 rules in about seven to eight years. H2Fly’s business plan is open to developing an aircraft in-house and/or to working with other manufacturers to provide propulsion for another new airframe or convert an existing type. The company believes that it could eventually scale up the power rating for its system to around 1.5 MW. The purpose of the HY4 was to show that it is possible to build a fully redundant powertrain, with two hydrogen storage systems, and redundancy for the fuel cells, cooling, and power distribution. It also featured an electric motor that was completely redundant in three phases.
East Japan Railway Tests Hydrogen-Hybrid Train Strategic Research Institute Published on : 24 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am East Japan Railway Co has revealed a hydrogen-powered test train on Friday, equipped with an advanced fuel cell and battery system. The first such test train in Japan has been named HYBARI, which stands for Hydrogen-Hybrid Advanced Rail Vehicle for Innovation. In November 2021, JR East completed a trial run of its E-7 series Shinkansen bullet train in Japan’s Niigata Prefecture. During the trial, the 12-car E7-series bullet train was remotely piloted from a control centre. It travelled for nearly 5km from Niigata Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen line. JR East will conduct test runs for the two-car train on the Nanbu Line, which connects Tachikawa Station in Tachikawa, Tokyo and Kawasaki Station in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, as well as some other lines from late March, aiming to start commercial use in 2030. The new train is equipped with hybrid systems that make used of hydrogen-powered fuel cells and storage batteries as their source of electricity. High-pressure hydrogen from a storage tank on the train is pumped into a fuel cell system developed by Toyota Motor Corp. which generates electricity via chemical reactions from the oxygen in the air. The electricity is then sent to the batteries that can be tapped by the trains engines to drive locomotion. Toyota Motor has developed the fuel cell system for the train while the hybrid drive system is provided by Hitachi. The development cost for the test train, which can travel up to about 140 kilometers per charge of hydrogen, totaled some PY 4 billion. JR East group has a target of reducing its carbon dioxide emissions effectively to zero in fiscal 2050 and is hopeful an overhaul of its train fleet with HYBARI technology can help them achieve that goal.

TECO2030’s Innovation Center was also recently launched, claiming to be the country’s first large-scale hydrogen fuel cell production facility, a culmination of the company’s work related to sustainable solutions for the maritime industry. This new agreement is a big step not only for the Center’s fuel cell production, used for heavy-duty applications as well, but also for Norway’s hydrogen fuel cell export.
