ABB Supplying Electrical Package for Heat Pump Strategic Research Institute Published on : 16 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am ABB will deploy its complete electrical, instrumentation and control package, motors and variable speed drives for the powerhouse of the heat pump, which will be the world’s largest seawater heat pump based on CO2 as refrigerant. With Esbjerg facing the UNESCO world heritage area of the Wadden Sea, the careful selection of the right pump was essential. The 50 MW seawater heat pump system from MAN Energy Solutions, a long-standing customer of ABB, converts electrical energy into thermal energy and uses toxicologically safe CO2 as a refrigerant for the entire system cycle. As part of their 2030 strategy to pursue a 100 percent fossil free heat production with zero loss of applied resources, DIN Forsyning is developing a new hybrid renewable district heat plant to replace heat currently supplied by Esbjerg coal-fired combined heat and power plant. For the CHP plant, which produces about half of all district heating for Esbjerg, to be decommissioned in April 2023, DIN Forsyning had to be ready with alternative heat sources for the district heating, which can reduce primary energy consumption by 50 percent and generate low-carbon energy from heat pumps. ABB’s technology will contribute to the replacement of the coal-fired plant as the main source of heat for the city of Esbjerg and get closer to the goal of reducing carbon emissions in the city. It will also be deployed to ensure that the entire heating network can be powered from renewables, and distributed to the plant, through connections to the offshore wind turbines in the North Sea. In addition, ABB will supply a medium voltage variable speed drive, motors, as well as electrical and control solutions to support the high efficiency of the system and the accurate control of this massive heat pump.

ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop Solution for Steel MeltShop Operations Strategic Research Institute Published on : 30 Nov, 2021, 4:57 am Technology leader ABB has launched ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop, the first smart factory digital application of its kind for the metals industry. It is designed to increase melt shop productivity, save energy and improve employee safety, with payback within six months. Based on advanced digital algorithms, the new solution is unique in that it offers not only powerful real-time ladle tracking but also automated crane scheduling and a predictive thermal modelling engine. The tracking engine follows ladle movement via cranes and transfer cars in real time. Radar and laser positioning technologies provide accurate visualization while reducing hardware footprint and maintenance needs compared to radio-frequency identification solutions. The automated crane scheduling includes job forecasting, route planning and automatic acknowledgement of jobs. This will enable steelmakers to move towards autonomous operations by eliminating manual co-ordinations, with increased safety in hot zones due to lower footfall. The thermal engine function uses ladle thermal history from the tracking engine and forecasted heat movement from scheduling engines to predict the thermal loss during ladle transfer and predicts the correct lift temperature at ladle furnace. This results in better superheat compliance at the caster, eliminating caster slowdowns, hence increasing productivity. Steelmakers can expect ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop to help increase superheat compliance to enable 4-5 percent higher casting speeds to improve productivity and reduce arcing by 5 degrees Celsius per heat in ladle furnaces for increased energy and cost efficiency. This application uses all standard communications protocols, employs ABB’s multi-layered defense-in-depth approach to cyber security and is compatible with both ABB and third-party systems. Benefits of ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop include Productivity 4-5 percent increased casting speed due to better superheat compliance Reduced tapping delays, in EAF or converter due to more efficient scheduling of cranes for ladle movement Better ladle management and maintenance planning thanks to access to historical data on all movements Increased manpower productivity since no manual intervention or acknowledgement is required Energy efficiency 5 degrees Celsius less arcing per heat (batch) in ladle furnace using thermal models to accurately predict target lift temperature Improved decision-making thanks to forecasting of ladle movements and crane schedules Safety Increased safety with less footfall in hot zones which would otherwise be needed to manage ladle and crane movement ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop has already been installed by JSW Steel Ltd. It is expected to increase the company’s EBITDA profit by around USD 2 million per annum through 4 percent higher casting speeds, time savings of one working day per month and additional output equating to 24,000 tonnes a year.
Wartsila & RINA to Deliver Hydrogen Fuel Solutions Strategic Research Institute Published on : 01 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am The technology group Wärtsilä, together with class society RINA, ABB, Helbio, a subsidiary of Metacon AB, the Liberian Registry and energy major have joined forces in an effort to deliver a solution with hydrogen as fuel. The aim is to have a scalable and sustainable solution that will exceed the IMO 2050 target for a 70 percent reduction in carbon intensity without the need for an extensive infrastructure investment. This offers the shipping industry a pathway to low-carbon operations within a reasonable time frame. Current difficulties and cost considerations regarding the production, distribution, and onboard storage of hydrogen have so far limited the sector’s interest in its direct use as a marine fuel. However, by producing hydrogen onboard, and using readily available LNG, the solution becomes far more viable and in a much faster time than would otherwise be possible. The concept is based on combining LNG with steam to produce hydrogen and CO2. The hydrogen produced will be used directly in a mix with natural gas in internal combustion engines or in fuel cells, thus eliminating the need for hydrogen to be stored onboard. The CO2 will be liquefied using the cryogenic stream of LNG that would be used as fuel anyway, and later disposed ashore for carbon storage. Tankers can use the stored CO2 as inert gas during discharge. The necessary equipment can easily be fitted on the deck of a commercial vessel. This innovative concept will support the marine sector’s gradual transition from LNG to hydrogen, without any major adjustments to a vessel’s onboard technologies. Only LNG bunkering will be required and, by progressively increasing the production of hydrogen, the consumption of fossil methane and associated methane slip will be reduced at the same rate. Wärtsilä and ABB will support the application of hydrogen in powering internal combustion engines and fuel cells respectively, while Helbio will provide the technology and manufacturing of gas reformers. RINA and the Liberian Registry will provide advice and guidance on the application of rules and regulations for novel concept alternative designs, based on Hazid/Hazop analyses, as well as specific rules for this kind of arrangement.

ABB Electromagnetic Stirring to Help Steel Makers Improve Quality Strategic Research Institute Published on : 16 Dec, 2021, 5:12 am Global technology company ABB has launched its Tundish EMS solution to enable steelmakers to overcome the limited ability of the tundish vessel in controlling the flow of molten metal, and therefore steel quality and temperature. Tundish EMS is placed on the outside of the tundish and uses non-contact electromagnetic stirring technology to generate an electromagnetic field that creates a stirring effect in the bath melt. This continuous stirring significantly increases mixing zone volume for virtually the entire tundish, with higher flow speeds, elimination of dead zones and homogenization of temperature. Adoption of this electromagnetic stirring technology will be particularly important for steelmakers with multiple casting strands coming from one tundish. It will mean greater removal of inclusions, resulting in smoother, cleaner steel and reductions in nozzle clogging. By creating a stirring flow throughout the entire tundish melt bath, Tundish EMS delivers rapid homogenization of temperature and chemical composition that results in better quality steel, more uniform and repeatable casting conditions across multiple strands and overall improved quality, productivity and profitability in billet and bloom casting and metal powder production. Tundish EMS offers several new functionalities including flexibility in stirring force and direction and the ability to stir and control the flow field in the whole melt volume of the tundish. This means that steelmakers no longer have to rely solely on the limited ability of tundish furnishings for control of molten metal flow, where often significant dead zones lead to temperature variations and where smaller inclusions or inclusion clusters cannot be removed. A variety of Tundish EMS installation configurations are available for most tundish types. Tundish EMS enhances quality, productivity and profitability in a number of ways. As well as improving non-metallic inclusion removal and overall steel cleanliness, it also provides temperature homogenization and stability throughout the entire tundish melt bath, reducing superheat and enhancing uniformity of temperature across various strands. Overall process repeatability and reliability is improved and costs are reduced by lowered consumption of tundish furniture such as dam, weir and baffle materials.
ABB & AWS to Develop Electric Operations for Net Zero Mining Strategic Research Institute Published on : 20 Dec, 2021, 5:32 am Global technology leader ABB has announced it is working with Amazon Web Services to accelerate the adoption of new and sustainable technologies in mining. The two companies are now creating solutions for digitally integrated all-electric operations to help meet industry goals on net-zero emissions. In a first demonstration, ABB Ability Operations Management System has already been integrated with heavy-duty EV drivetrain developer MEDATech’s cloud data collection system on AWS. Telemetry data, including battery state and speed of charge, was transmitted in real time from MEDATech’s first-ever 100 percent electric haul truck, paired with ABB’s fast charging pilot solution ABB Ability eMine FastCharge, while ensuring data security using AWS’s Internet of Things services. The team used the gathered data to perform a real-time production optimization for test purposes as shown at MINExpo in Las Vegas in September 2021. Such seamless digital integration of electrical equipment across industrial operations is increasingly important for operational efficiencies through optimized scheduling and planning. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and their related charging infrastructure present a challenge and an opportunity as the industry commits to decarbonization and reduced resources and energy consumption. ABB and AWS are also proving scalability. AWS enables OMS to ingest, store, process, and analyze operational data from stationary and mobile equipment and dynamically scales to meet the operational demands. The new ABB Ability™ eMine approach relies on the reliable and standardized exchange of equipment and process data to effectively integrate electrical and digital systems from mine to port. ABB is simplifying the integration for its mining customers via a collaborative and interoperable approach, leveraging AWS, which removes management and investment responsibilities normally associated with on-premises infrastructure from the customer.
ABB & HydrogenPro to Optimize Green Hydrogen Production Strategic Research Institute Published on : 20 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am ABB has signed an order with HydrogenPro, a hydrogen plant company, to provide electrical equipment for the world’s largest single stack high-pressure alkaline electrolyser - a system that generates hydrogen by using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Once deployed, at a specially built test facility in Herøya, Norway in 2022, the system will be capable of producing 1,100 normal cubic metres of green hydrogen per hour. ABB’s scope will include an integrated electrical package comprising transformers, rectifiers, DC Chokes and Busbars. Hydrogen is very energy intensive to produce sustainably - everything in the production process, each little component adds a little bit of inefficiency, so this integrated portfolio approach will ensure that every single, possible improvement in efficiency is made. The validation program will include rigorous testing to see how the performance criteria and efficiency of the electrolyser can be optimized. This will enable HydrogenPro to make further improvements to the electrolyser system before introducing similar technology on a long-term, large scale at similar facilities around the world. This collaboration follows a two-year partnership with HydrogenPro and represents ABB’s first green hydrogen order in Norway. This program into scaling and testing hydrogen technology to enable global decarbonization goals will pave the way for the launch of large green hydrogen plants in the future, which are key to reducing global CO2 emissions.
ABB EV Charges for Milan’s Electric Bus Network of ATM Strategic Research Institute Published on : 21 Dec, 2021, 5:31 am As a leading global supplier of e-mobility technology, ABB worked with Milan’s public transport company ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) to deliver a turnkey solution for its San Donato depot. This is the first of four fully electrical depots planned for the city and a pilot site for innovative new charging solutions. Designed with sustainability and longevity in mind, the installation at San Donato will help ATM meet its forecast to reduce diesel demand by 30 million liters per year and cut CO2 emissions by 75,000 tons per year by 2030. ABB’s Terra 124 chargers have been installed in the depot’s parking area. One charger can fast charge two vehicles at the same time, optimizing the installation cost and minimizing impact. The e-buses are scheduled to charge during the night when it is more cost effective, and with a range of up to 180km in normal conditions, this is enough for the e-buses to remain in use all day without the need for interim charging. As the pilot charging site is focused on using the most innovative and energy efficient solutions, ABB’s package also included the installation of a 324 kWh Energy Storage Solution. The ESS allows ATM to manage their grid consumption. It also allows understanding of the use cases for an ESS, when coupled with charging infrastructure, for simulating potential second-life use case for bus battery packs when they are available in the future. To complete the installation an ABB EV Site Solution controller was commissioned. It optimizes the ESS recharging process while minimizing energy demand and reduces operating costs by controlling in real time the total peak consumption. The ABB Ability Connected Services Portfolio of digital solutions, which allows for remote diagnosis and management of the chargers, was also utilized, helping improve and extend its operating life. In addition, ABB supplied its medium-voltage UniSec air insulated switchgear with its innovative AirPlus insulation gas inside the apparatus. An alternative to SF6, the world’s most potent greenhouse gas, AirPlus can reduce the global warming impact by almost 100 percent.
Alle input is welkom.

ABB & Ballard Progress with Fuel Cell-Powered Marine Transport Strategic Research Institute Published on : 28 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am ABB and Ballard are progressing with their industry-leading partnership to decarbonize marine transport and have received an AiP from DNV for their high-power fuel cell concept, the development of which was launched in 2018. An AiP is a major milestone in developing new technology as an independent assessment of the concept, confirming that the design is feasible and no significant obstacles exist to prevent the concept from being realized. With the AiP in place, the jointly developed solution can be completed within the next couple of years for application onboard a wide range of vessels. The high-power fuel cell unit is a flexible solution that will support the energy needs of a diverse range of vessels requiring multiple 3 MW blocks of power. A cruise vessel operating in coastal areas could either run entirely on fuel cell power or switch to it when operating in environmentally sensitive areas or emission control zones, while a ferry with a regular schedule and frequent bunkering opportunities could operate solely on fuel cell power. For ocean going vessels, fuel cell power could support auxiliary needs. The concept of the solution also envisions the integration with an energy storage system. The successful development of a high-power fuel cell system concept builds on a collaboration between ABB and Ballard, the leading global provider of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell solutions, initiated in June 2018. As part of its strategy to develop alternative emission-free technologies, ABB is already well advanced in collaborative development of fuel cell systems for ships. Considered among the most promising technologies available in terms of greenhouse gas reduction, zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells are already powering smaller vessels over short distances and the technology is on the verge of being ready for installation on larger ships.
