SSE Thermal & Equinor Award Contracts for Aldbrough Hydrogen

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    24 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

SSE Thermal and Equinor have awarded two key contracts for work on the proposed hydrogen storage facility at Aldbrough, reinforcing their commitment to kickstarting a low carbon hydrogen economy in the region. Engineering company Atkins and sustainability consultancy Environmental Resources Management have been awarded major contracts, representing an important milestone and progress in the proposed development of one of the world’s largest hydrogen storage facilities.

The Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage project is collaboration between SSE Thermal and Equinor which plans to store low carbon hydrogen either within the existing natural gas storage facility or at a new hydrogen storage site adjacent to the Aldbrough Gas Storage facility in East Yorkshire. This could be in operation by early 2028, with an initial expected capacity of at least 320 Gigawatt hours, which is enough to power over 860 hydrogen buses a year. Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage would be a critical asset to helping the UK meet its low carbon hydrogen ambitions.

Atkins has been awarded the contract to conduct a feasibility study to assess the design of the hydrogen storage caverns at Aldbrough as well as the corresponding pipeline to transport hydrogen to and from the proposed new Humber Low Carbon Pipelines being developed as part of the Zero Carbon Humber consortium. The outcome of the assessment will provide the foundation for the next phase of scoping work as the project matures. The contract also includes the option for subsequent pre-FEED (front end engineering design) work.

ERM’s contract covers the environmental, health, safety and permitting aspects of the scheme, which are vital to developing Equinor’s future ‘Hydrogen to Humber’ (H2H) ambitions and enabling flexibility in the regional hydrogen production, usage and storage value chain.

Hype & Akuo to Deploy Hydrogen Stations in Paris Region

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    28 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

Pioneer in hydrogen mobility Hype and French producer of renewable energy Akuo are combining their initiatives in the Paris region with the Last Mile and H24byHype projects. The combination of these two projects will enable Hype to deploy1 at least 20 high-capacity stations (1,000 kg/day each) and six smaller stations in the Paris region by 2024, thus ensuring a coherent development of station networks and uses around Paris, with a density and scale fully adapted to demand.

As part of the partnership established with Akuo, Hype, via its subsidiary Hype Assets, is investing in the Last Mile project. Initially developed by Akuo, this project for a shared green hydrogen mobility ecosystem for last-mile delivery players includes the deployment in the Paris region by 2024 of hydrogen vehicle fleets and a network of 16 green hydrogen stations.

The Last Mile project is supported by ADEME, the Ile-de-France Region and the European Union (CEF programme - Connecting Europe Facility) via public subsidies. The initiative also has the support of Banque des Territoires, a shareholder of Hype and key partner of the Last Mile project, which thus confirms its strong commitment to hydrogen mobility.

The Last Mile project reinforces the H24byHype project submitted by Hype Assets in September 2021 to ADEME as part of the "Hydrogen Territorial Ecosystems" call for projects. The aim of these two complementary initiatives is to create the first hydrogen mobility ecosystem for the Paris region between 2022 and 2024, with the Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP) in sight, while facilitating and accelerating the most promising uses of hydrogen mobility, namely the deployment of 10,000 Hype taxis, light and heavy commercial vehicles, buses and service vehicles such as refuse-collection trucks.

Vandaag lanceren we aflevering 4.

    www.waterstofnet.eu/nl/nieuws/nieuwe-...

    Principe is elektrolyse

H2WIN is opgericht in 2013.

ThyssenKrupp beslist in komende maanden over beursgang waterstofdochter

In 2023, Australia will become the first country in the world to power up one of GE’s 9F hybrid gas-hydrogen turbines for grid electricity. The project will help Australia to de-carbonise power generation during the 2020s.

In this case study, GE Australia Country Leader, Sam Maresh explains:

Why Australia is a good place to invest in clean power generation
How the new gas plant will help trigger demand for clean hydrogen.
Power transition: from coal to gas to hydrogen

EnergyAustralia’s Tallawarra B project will provide over 300 MW of dispatchable capacity for New South Wales (NSW) customers. It will be ready to step up in the summer of 2023–24. This coincides with the retirement of the Liddell 1.6 GW coal-fired power plant in the Hunter Valley, NSW.

Tallawarra B sets a new benchmark for how gas generators can reach net zero emissions by 2050: it will use green hydrogen and offset residual emissions.

Hydrogen has two advantages. First, it can be made from wind and solar power using electrolysis. This is called ‘green hydrogen’. Second, hydrogen plants are ideal for dispatchable power. Like gas plants, they can be powered up quickly to balance variable output from renewables plants.

Australia is on track to become a major global producer of green hydrogen. This is thanks to abundant high-quality, low-cost wind and solar resources and a well-established and regulated energy market.

Prospects look excellent. The share of renewable energy in Australian power generation is set to rise from 28% in 2020-2021 to 79% by 2030 (Source: Australian Energy Market Operator, Draft 2022 Integrated System Plan, December 2021). But the hydrogen-manufacturing industry can’t grow quickly without major investment. And to attract investment, the hydrogen industry needs industrial-sized customers.

EnergyAustralia leads transition to green, dual-fuel plants

For EnergyAustralia, the solution is hybrid power plants. These plants can use a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. This allows the generator to adjust the fuel intake, depending on the cost and availability of hydrogen. In turn, this creates an expanding market for hydrogen.

The challenge for EnergyAustralia was finding reliable technology for this new type of plant.

GE is one of the major global suppliers of industrial gas turbines. The company’s products generate approximately one-third of the world’s power. GE has invested heavily in adapting its gas turbines to new fuels – including hydrogen.

‘We have decades of experience running our gas turbines safely on varying levels of hydrogen, says Maresh. ‘Our turbines can burn fuels with hydrogen levels that vary from 5% up to potentially 100% in the future.’

In June 2021, EnergyAustralia signed a contract with GE to purchase the company’s 9F gas-fired turbines for the new Tallawarra B power station. The turbines will power Australia’s first dual-fuel, gas-hydrogen power plant. The plant will be used to stabilise the grid, firing up rapidly to meet peak demand.

    Why Australia for hydrogen power?

According to Maresh, Australia will become the first country in the world to adapt the 9F turbine to a blend of natural gas and hydrogen for civil power generation. This will put Australia at the forefront of the transition to hydrogen power. It will also help kick-start industrial-scale hydrogen production in Australia.

‘The Australian Government has been on the front foot with hydrogen for some time,’ says Maresh. ‘There is clear guidance at state and federal level. This makes Australia an ideal candidate to pioneer hybrid gas-hydrogen power turbines.’

The New South Wales Government and Australian Federal Government contributed A$83 million to support the Tallawarra B power project. All state and territory governments are taking concrete actions to develop Australia’s hydrogen industry. Australian Government support for the hydrogen industry is now worth approximately $A2.8 billion, according to the Government’s State of Hydrogen 2021 report.

Tallawarra B hopes to kick-start the Illawarra’s hydrogen hub

Chief Operating Officer for EnergyAustralia, Liz Westcott, says the company is proud of its commitment to deliver Australia’s first net zero emissions hydrogen and gas-capable power plant.

‘The Tallawarra B project has the potential to launch demand for green hydrogen in Australia,’ she says. ‘It will contribute to Australia becoming a renewable energy superpower. And it will deliver jobs and economic growth in the Illawarra.’

GE also expects the plant will act as a trigger for hydrogen production in Australia.

‘This is a significant step forward for hydrogen transition in Australia,’ says Maresh. ‘The project demonstrates the substantive role gas technologies can play in reducing carbon emissions and ensuring reliable electrical supply.

‘Today, we are finding new ways to enhance the reliability of the energy grid while ensuring consumers have access to affordable, reliable and sustainable power.’

Shell has started operations at the power-to-hydrogen electrolyser in Zhangjiakou, a joint venture between Shell (China) Limited and Zhangjiakou City Transport Construction Investment Holding Group Co Ltd. One of the world’s largest hydrogen electrolysers has started production of green hydrogen in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, China. The electrolyser will provide about half of the total green hydrogen supply for fuel cell vehicles at the Zhangjiakou competition zone during the Winter Olympic Games, set to begin on February 4, 2022.

Taking only 13 months to complete, this is Shell’s first commercial hydrogen development project in China. Utilising onshore wind power, the project will initially supply green hydrogen to fuel a fleet of more than 600 fuel cell vehicles at the Zhangjiakou competition zone during the Winter Olympic Games. After that, the hydrogen will be used for public and commercial transport in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, helping to decarbonise its mobility sector.

The project is part of a joint venture between Shell China and Zhangjiakou City Transport Construction Investment Holding Group Co Ltd, formed in November 2020. The 20 megawatts power-to-hydrogen electrolyser and hydrogen refuelling stations in Zhangjiakou are phase 1 of the joint venture. The companies have plans to scale up to 60 MW in the next two years in phase 2.

Partnership behind 'Green Fuels for Denmark' accelerates project and investigates production of
green jet fuel (e-methanol) by 2025

    4.2.2022 08:00:01 CET | Ørsted A/S | Investor News

As a result of the increased Danish ambitions within Power-to-X, the partnership behind the Power-to-X flagship project 'Green Fuels for Denmark' in Copenhagen has decided to bring forward parts of the project in order to produce green fuels for heavy transport two years earlier than previously planned. Specifically, the partnership has decided to bring forward 100 MW of the originally planned second phase’s 250 MW electrolysis from 2027 to 2025, as well as to begin capturing sustainable carbon dioxide in 2025.

‘Green Fuels for Denmark’ can potentially supply green fuels corresponding to Denmark's total domestic consumption of jet fuel by 2027 when the full second phase is commissioned, thus fulfilling the government's ambition of 100 % green domestic aviation by 2030, three years ahead of schedule.

The accelerated phase of 100 MW can produce more than 50,000 tonnes of sustainable fuels in 2025, mainly e-methanol for shipping, but prompted by the Danish Government's ambition to establish green aviation opportunities in Denmark as early as 2025, the partnership will examine whether parts of ‘Green Fuels for Denmark’s’ expected production of green aviation fuels can also be brought forward to 2025.

However, the fulfilment of the Danish 2025 ambition, as well as the 2030 ambition requires the establishment of a regulatory framework that makes green jet fuel a real and competitive alternative to fossil fuels. Chemically, there are several ways to produce aviation fuels from hydrogen and sustainable carbon dioxide, and the partnership will explore the various technological possibilities.

Mads Nipper, Group President and CEO of Ørsted, says:

"Denmark has a unique opportunity to create an industrial success story within green fuels for heavy transport. The Danish Parliament and Government have created a very good framework to realise this huge potential through their ambitious goals for the build-out of offshore wind and the construction of Power-to-X facilities. The Danish Prime Minister's recent announcement of the ambition to accelerate the green transformation of aviation has directly made us in the partnership look for a way to enable the production of green jet fuel as early as 2025. It will be a technological challenge that we in Green Fuels for Denmark are ready to answer, so that we can secure Denmark's position as a green leader in the coming decades and push for a green breakthrough for the global transformation of the aviation industry. "

Thomas Woldbye, CEO of Copenhagen Airports, says:

"It’s positive that the Danish Government has set ambitious targets for the green transformation of domestic aviation. Consequently, we in Green Fuels for Denmark are actively looking at whether we can contribute to achieving these ambitions with Power-to-X produced in Denmark. If we are to realise the ambitious targets, it’s necessary that there’s a political will to secure financial support to produce sustainable aviation fuels, especially the first production, so that we can get started without the fuel becoming too expensive. If successful, the Government's objectives could be an important starting point that allows Denmark to take the lead – not only in relation to the climate agenda – but also in a potential industrial success story. We are both at Copenhagen Airports and in Green Fuels for Denmark ready to play and active role."

Simon Pauck Hansen, Executive Vice President and COO of Airline Operations, SAS, says:

"The Danish Government's goal is very exciting and we look forward to working with the Government and our partners to solve the challenge. However, the fulfilment of the 2025 ambition, as well as the 2030 ambition, will require that far more sustainable fuel is produced than at present, and that framework conditions are established, making green jet fuel a real and competitive alternative to fossil fuels. Denmark is in a good position to start production and the partnership's acceleration of the production is a step in the right direction. We look forward to further dialogue with the Government about structuring a future green and competitive domestic air service."

Søren Skou, CEO, A.P. Moller – Maersk, says:

“The science is clear and so are our customers in their ask for sustainable solutions across air, land, and sea. Maersk has set an ambitious milestone target to source sustainable aviation fuel for 30 pct. of our air cargo by the end of the decade. For us to deliver on this huge challenge, action is needed now. Green Fuels for Denmark could firmly place Denmark on the world map as a Power-to-X frontrunner – and an acceleration of the plans can help us benchmark and scale our sustainability efforts to meet the needs of the global air cargo operation we are currently building as part of our end-to-end logistics offering.”

In the initial vision for ‘Green Fuels for Denmark’, the plan was to commission an electrolysis plant with a capacity of approx. 10 MW in 2023 and subsequently 250 MW in 2027 and 1,300 MW by 2030. It’s still the partnership’s plan to expand the full second phase of Green Fuels for Denmark to 250 MW by 2027. This phase will be able to supply enough jet fuel to cover significantly more than the expected Danish domestic consumption of jet fuel and thus also contribute to the conversion of international aviation from Denmark, provided that the necessary framework is established. At the same time, the realisation of the full second phase depends on the availability of sufficient amounts of new green power, e.g. from offshore wind.

Green Fuels for Denmark's final phase of 1,300 MW will be able to supply green fuels, primarily jet fuel, that can replace approx. 30 % of the total fuel consumption at Copenhagen Airport, which will entail a significant green conversion of international air traffic in addition to domestic air travel.

Currently, there’s no significant consumption of sustainable aviation fuel produced through Power-to-X, either in Denmark or internationally. Therefore, Denmark has a unique opportunity to create an international leadership position, but the technology for producing the fuels still needs to be matured significantly, just as new aviation fuels must go through a thorough and extensive approval process before they can be used in aviation.
