    Proterra to Set Up EV Battery Factory in South Carolina

    As demand for commercial electric vehicles continues to grow across the United States and around the world, Proterra Inc announced plans to open a new EV battery system manufacturing plant in South Carolina to produce the company’s industry-leading battery systems for Proterra Powered customers’ commercial electric vehicles, including delivery and work trucks, industrial equipment, buses, and more. Proterra has committed to a minimum investment of at leastUSD 76 million, with additional investments planned over the next several years, and expects to create more than 200 new jobs over the next several years at the 327,000 square foot battery system production plant. The factory is expected to launch in the second half of 2022 with multiple gigawatt hours of annual production capacity for Proterra’s battery systems. By 2025, the factory is expected to support additional battery system production capacity, as well as the production of ancillary systems incorporated into electric medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles and equipment.

    Proterra’s new battery system manufacturing facility will be located at the 42.76-acre Carolina Commerce Center in Greer, South Carolina near Proterra’s electric bus manufacturing facility in Greenville, South Carolina and adjacent to the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. By opening the company’s first EV battery system factory on the East Coast of the United States, Proterra will bring battery production closer to its Proterra Powered customers and its own Proterra Transit electric bus manufacturing operations.

    Designed and manufactured in the United States, Proterra’s battery systems have been proven through more than 20 million service miles driven by its transit customers and selected by world-class commercial vehicle manufacturers to electrify delivery vehicles, work trucks, construction and mining equipment, school buses, coach buses, and more.

    ABB EV Charges for Milan’s Electric Bus Network of ATM

    As a leading global supplier of e-mobility technology, ABB worked with Milan’s public transport company ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) to deliver a turnkey solution for its San Donato depot. This is the first of four fully electrical depots planned for the city and a pilot site for innovative new charging solutions. Designed with sustainability and longevity in mind, the installation at San Donato will help ATM meet its forecast to reduce diesel demand by 30 million liters per year and cut CO2 emissions by 75,000 tons per year by 2030.

    ABB’s Terra 124 chargers have been installed in the depot’s parking area. One charger can fast charge two vehicles at the same time, optimizing the installation cost and minimizing impact. The e-buses are scheduled to charge during the night when it is more cost effective, and with a range of up to 180km in normal conditions, this is enough for the e-buses to remain in use all day without the need for interim charging.

    As the pilot charging site is focused on using the most innovative and energy efficient solutions, ABB’s package also included the installation of a 324 kWh Energy Storage Solution. The ESS allows ATM to manage their grid consumption. It also allows understanding of the use cases for an ESS, when coupled with charging infrastructure, for simulating potential second-life use case for bus battery packs when they are available in the future.

    To complete the installation an ABB EV Site Solution controller was commissioned. It optimizes the ESS recharging process while minimizing energy demand and reduces operating costs by controlling in real time the total peak consumption.

    The ABB Ability Connected Services Portfolio of digital solutions, which allows for remote diagnosis and management of the chargers, was also utilized, helping improve and extend its operating life. In addition, ABB supplied its medium-voltage UniSec air insulated switchgear with its innovative AirPlus insulation gas inside the apparatus. An alternative to SF6, the world’s most potent greenhouse gas, AirPlus can reduce the global warming impact by almost 100 percent.

    BYD Delivers eBuses to Bergkvarabuss in Sweden

    Leading electric bus manufacturer BYD has embarked on its first ever delivery of eBuses on 12 December to the Public Transport Operator, Bergkvarabuss in Skåne, Sweden. It is the first time that pure-electric buses will be used for regional and long distance transportation in Sweden, making this debut delivery even more significant. The initial delivery of 45 BYD eBuses marks the first phase of a substantial order for 79 units placed by Bergkvarabuss earlier this year. The order spans the spectrum of BYD pure-electric zero-emission buses, all featuring the very latest cutting edge technology from the world-renowned new energy vehicle experts.

    Once in service, the BYD eBuses will be operated to connect six designated cities in the Swedish region of Skåne, including Ängelholm, Malmö, Trelleborg, Ystad, Simrishamn and Sjöbo. While the buses are new to Bergkvarabuss, BYD eBuses already enjoy popularity in the wider Nordic region, and in other parts of Sweden, where they are respected for their reliability, safety and performance, even in extreme cold temperatures. It further strengthens BYD’s position as a leading supplier of electric buses to the Nordic region, many of which are built in Europe at BYD’s production facility in Komárom, Hungary.

    The first delivery to Bergkvarabuss includes four of BYD’s best-selling 12-metre eBuses, as well as brand new models to BYD’s electric bus range; 18 in the 13-metre category with a further 23 units of BYD 15-metre models.

    All the pure-electric buses benefit from the latest generation BYD Iron-Phosphate Battery Technology. This improved battery density delivers impressively long driving ranges as proven under SORT Test conditions. BYD’s innovative battery thermal management system also provides enhanced battery life and optimises safety. Technical innovation from BYD extends further to the 6-in-1 controller, which integrates the vehicle’s primary electronic components.

    The latest BYD 15-metre eBuses offers a single charge range of 400km under SORT test conditions. Both the BYD 13-metre and 15-metre are designed to impress on every level.     BYD ADL Electric Bus for Stagecoach East Scotland

    Alexander Dennis Limited and BYD UK announced that Stagecoach East Scotland is launching nine electric buses supplied by their electric vehicle partnership, the UK’s leading electric bus producer, on local services in Perth. The buses were part-funded by the Scottish Ultra Low Emission Bus Scheme of the Scottish Government. The fleet of nine BYD ADL Enviro200EV single deckers will operate on busy Perth routes 1 and 2, connecting housing areas with the city centre, retail and leisure developments, Perth Royal Infirmary, educational establishments and local football ground.

    The zero emission buses were built locally in Falkirk by ADL in partnership with BYD as the manufacturer’s partner for electric buses in the UK and Ireland. The partnership combines BYD’s world-leading expertise in batteries and electric technology, with ADL’s unparalleled experience in bodywork assembly and passenger-centric interiors. Locally headquartered, low carbon energy company SSE are partnering with Stagecoach to deliver the new electrical infrastructure at Perth depot.

    Not only do Stagecoach’s new buses benefit the planet by not having exhaust emissions, but they are also quieter and have USB charging points at each seat as well as interior LED lights and contactless payment facilities to create a relaxing experience for passengers.

    Stagecoach is introducing a total of 46 new fully electric buses in key transport networks in Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Perth as part of SULEBS, all of which are supplied by the BYD ADL partnership. SULEBS helps bus companies invest in electric vehicles and associated infrastructure to support a green recovery out of the coronavirus pandemic, improve air quality and advance Scotland’s ambitions for a net zero economy. The Scottish Government has set a legally binding target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

    ADL is a subsidiary of leading independent global bus manufacturer NFI Group Inc, while BYD is a global leader in batteries, energy management and electric mobility.

    De Europese commisie in Brussel heeft gezegd dat wij in Europa tientallen mega batterijfabrieken nodig hebben. De Telsa mega batterijfabriek in Duitsland van 50GWh kost 5 miljard euro. Je praat dus over een investering van meer dan 100 miljard euro. De doelstelling is dat Europa in 2030 een marktaandeel heeft van 30% voor EV batterijen. Er rijden op onze aarde zo'n 1.5 miljard auto's rond en die zullen geleidelijk aan vervangen moeten worden door electrische auto's. Het wordt een wedloop tussen Europa en Azië. Het is net als bij FormulaF1 dat je steeds maar gas moet blijven geven want anders raak je achterop en verlies je de wedstrijd.

    Ebusco krijgt opdracht voor levering 90 elektrische bussen
    Aan Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Ebusco heeft een grote opdracht in Duitsland binnengehaald. Dit bevestigde de fabrikant dinsdag nadat ABM Financial News eerder al over deze opdracht schreef.

    Het betreft de levering van 90 elektrische bussen voor de stad Berlijn. Opdrachtgever is Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.

    Ebusco vermeldt geen financiële details. Volgens de fabrikant koos Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe voor de 2.2 bussen uit Nederland vanwege de goede prestaties van de batterij die de bussen hebben en het gunstige kostenplaatje.

    Vorige week schreven analisten van Jefferies dat met de opdracht een bedrag van circa 65 miljoen euro gemoeid zou zijn, 722.000 euro per bus.

    Ebusco gaat vanaf 2022 de 90 bussen uitleveren.

    Eerder al leverde Ebusco bussen aan de Duitse steden München, Bonn en Frankfurt. Op dit moment rijden er al 54 bussen van Ebusco.

    Scania 64-Tonne Electric Truck on Road in Sweden with Wibax

    A 64-tonne electric truck has been delivered to chemical supplier Wibax and will operate on the roads of northern Sweden. The 3-axle electric tractor contributes to Wibax reaching its climate targets and is yet another example of Scania innovating in close partnership with a customer. The electric truck has a total weight of 64 tonnes, including load and trailer, and will run on the roads between the cities of Piteå and Skellefteå in northern Sweden, a distance of 80 kilometres one way.

    The vehicle’s performance and load capacity are made possible by the development of a significantly stronger electric motor. As part of a long-term partnership, Scania and Wibax will work together to optimise the use of the vehicle over time – including charging, battery life length and route planning. This will also provide valuable insights to Wibax as they prepare to add additional electric vehicles to their fleet in the future.

    The continued and rapid development puts further focus on the need for infrastructure and green electricity also outside the urban areas. Steps are being taken but more speed is needed. In this case, the power company Skellefteå Kraft has been involved and is delivering the charging infrastructure.

    BYD ADL Delivers Enviro200EV Buses for Nottinghamshire

    BYD UK and Alexander Dennis Limited announced today that their electric vehicle partnership, the UK’s leading electric bus producer, has delivered four 10.2m length BYD ADL Enviro200EV eBuses to Nottinghamshire County Council, the first two of which have now entered service in Mansfield. These are the first BYD ADL eBuses in this 10.2m size specification to be delivered to a customer outside of London. BYD is a global leader in batteries, energy management and electric mobility, while ADL is a subsidiary of leading independent global bus manufacturer NFI Group Inc. (NFI).

    In an official handover taking place on 10 December 2021, the first two of the four zero-emission pure-electric eBuses now join Nottinghamshire County Council’s expanding fleet of ECOconnect buses operated by Stagecoach East Midlands, as part of the Council’s proactive commitment to climate change. This supports the Council’s objectives to provide cleaner, greener travel for residents in Nottinghamshire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.

    It is the second eBus order from Nottinghamshire County Council, who first successfully introduced two BYD ADL Enviro200EV buses to its fleet in 2018; these being 10.8m in length. Their reliability and efficiency have been the catalyst for this second order for a further four BYD ADL electric buses, which have a total capacity for 77 passengers.

    In addition to funding from the Department of Transport’s Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme (ULEBS), real estate developer Lindhurst Group has contributed towards the running of two of the new buses, which will operate on the Berry Hill Flyer (240) route in Mansfield. This serves the busy new Berry Hill development, sustainably connecting the new community to a variety of key locations in and around the town centre, using pure-electric, zero-emission public transportation. The remaining two electric buses are expected to enter service elsewhere in Nottinghamshire in the new year.

    The electric buses have been built in Scotland as part of the successful eBus partnership between BYD UK and ADL. The collaboration combines BYD’s expertise in pioneering Iron-Phosphate Battery Technology and advanced electric powertrain systems, with ADL’s reputation for build quality, stylish bodywork and passenger-centric interior design.

    Polestar Announces 270 Mile EPA Range & Power Upgrades

    Premium electric car company Polestar announced the Polestar 2 Long range Single motor received one of the best ratings in its class by the US Environmental Protection Agency, an estimate range of 270 miles. This announcement comes alongside ongoing Over-The-Air updates that are delivering new features to Polestar 2 owners and pre-empts a future option to purchase a performance software upgrade that adds an extra 67-hp for the dual-motor variant.

    Polestar continues to improve the Polestar 2 while its owners are living with it, thanks to OTA updates. The latest update is rolling out now, and includes a suite of new and improved features, including the ability to schedule charging sessions, allowing customers to take advantage of off-peak electricity pricing. The update also adds refinements to the Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) in the Polestar 2.

    Other recent OTA additions include battery preconditioning when a DC charger is set as a destination so the driver can be back on the road after the quickest possible charge, SiriusXM satellite radio; and a Range Assistant app that is geared to improve driver efficiency and increase range confidence. There is also an Eco Climate function in the app that allows the driver to reduce demand on the battery, thereby extending range.

    These updates are applicable to the full Polestar 2 model range, regardless of model year or variant.

    1 Amerikaanse wagen kan er natuurlijk nog bij, maar GM en Ford zullen natuurlijk ook wel meespelen.

    Vattenfall Tests Flexible EV Charging in Amsterdam

    In Amsterdam, Vattenfall is part of a new study on flexible charging speed for electric cars. The purpose is to find out the best way to utilise the grids and thereby make it possible to connect more charging points. The growing number of electric cars puts additional strain on city power grids. In Amsterdam Vattenfall participates in a new study together with the university, a grid operator and other parties, to test a new concept of smart charging.

    The tests with flexible charging speed for electric cars will be carried out in 10 neighborhoods at 126 charging points in Amsterdam until the end of summer 2022.

    In the test, the charging speed will vary depending on the available capacity in the grid and the number of cars being charged in each moment.

    The system software monitors how much electricity is required by the connected charging stations. This software then ensures that the charging speed changes during the day with the number of vehicles charging at the same time.

    The project, Flexpower 3, is a follow-up to the earlier Flexpower 1 and 2 pilots, in which the power of charging stations was reduced in the evenings, regardless of the number of cars charging at that time.

    Flexpower 3 is a joint project with the Municipality of Amsterdam, grid operator Liander, construction company Heijmans, Vattenfall, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Dutch smart-charging innovation centre ElaadNL.

    Arrival Reveals its First Electric Car

    Pioneer of a unique new method of design and production of affordable electric vehicles by local Microfactories Arrival has revealed the first finished prototype of the Arrival Car. The Arrival Car has been designed specifically for the ride hailing industry to give the best possible experience for both drivers and passengers and bring clean air to urban environments where most ride-hailing mileage occurs. To achieve this, Arrival has created a vehicle that has exceptional visibility and comfort – with leg room twice as large as that of an average car of the same length. The Arrival Car prioritises cost, uptime, driver comfort, safety, and convenience, given an average ride-hail vehicle will on average drive 45-50,000km a year, versus 12,000km, for a typical vehicle. It also ensures that passengers enjoy a premium experience too.

    Arrival has been able to develop the Car alongside ride-hailing drivers from Uber in just over six months. This timeframe and partnership to create a purpose built vehicle is made possible because of Arrival’s vertical integration utilising technologies that are shared across Arrival’s entire portfolio of vehicles that also includes the Van and the Bus. Arrival vehicles are designed from the ground-up and vertically integrated using a radical new method of design and production using microfactories, a totally transformative approach to automotive production.

    Arrival will now commence testing of the Car and will incorporate the feedback into the next design phase, continuing to evolve the product to create the most efficient, safe and desirable vehicle tailored specifically to this market.

    Polestar Raises Green Charging awareness with Marjan van Aubel

    Polestar has teamed up with Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel to engage and educate around the power of renewable energy, through a series of social media content. Most everyday products, from furniture to toothbrushes, come with a carbon footprint from their manufacturing processes. Once in the hands of consumers and being used for intended purposes, they become static, non-emitting items until they reach the end of their lifespans and need to be recycled or scrapped.

    The same thing could be the case for electric vehicles since they come with the potential of a climate-neutral use phase, but only if they are charged with renewable energy. Of course, electric vehicles, like any other products, come with a carbon footprint from production. Polestar is constantly working to reduce this for its products. This reduction is key, but the use case must also be considered – if charged with renewable energy, there should be no additional carbon emissions when using the car.

    To emphasise the importance of providing green energy on national grids and to show how design can accelerate the energy transition and increase transparency from charging providers, Polestar has turned to Dutch solar designer, Marjan van Aubel. Marjan van Aubel is designing for a climate-neutral future by combining the fields of sustainability, design and technology – ultimately aiming to accelerate the global energy transition.

    The initiative follows an exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam earlier in 2021, where Polestar commissioned eco-artist Thijs Biersteker to turn its Life Cycle Assessment into a piece of art. The result was an interactive installation named “We Harvest Wind”, that encouraged people to think about the greatest challenges of our time – the climate crisis, pollution and the transition to renewable energy – through art.

    De auto die loopt als een zonnetje

    Het Brabantse Lightyear wil komend jaar dan écht hun langverwachte zonnewagen op de weg brengen. Er zijn inmiddels zo'n 160 auto's besteld, maar het bedrijf uit Helmond heeft grotere plannen.

    Rijden op zonlicht. Als het aan de Brabantse Lightyear ligt, gaat het in de zomer van 2022 dan eindelijk gebeuren. Al ruim vijf jaar werkt het bedrijf aan het idee om een elektrische auto op de markt te brengen die rijdt op zonnecellen op het dak. Hun langverwachte eerste auto, de Lightyear One - kostprijs: €150.000 - moet komend jaar van de productieband in Finland rollen.

    Ook de concurrentie zit niet stil. Zo gaat Sono in Duitsland na een beursgang de productie van zonnewagens opstarten en hebben gevestigde autoproducenten zoals Hyundai ook plannen met zonnecellen. Wordt dit jaar dan de grote doorbraak?

    Als het aan Lightyear ligt wel. Mede-oprichter en ceo Lex Hoefsloot (30) is huiverig om het een 'droom' te noemen, hoewel het verhaal — van een studententeam naar een eigen auto — daar veel van wegheeft. Lightyear is voortgekomen uit een studententeam uit Eindhoven dat in 2013 deelnam aan de World Solar Challenge, een tweejaarlijkse race met auto’s die volledig op zonnestroom rijden. 'Met het woord “droom” lijkt het net of het niet waar is. Maar het is superconcreet, het is de realiteit', zegt Hoefsloot. 'Komend jaar wordt bepalend. Voor het bedrijf én voor de industrie.'

    Hoefsloot verwacht dat over vijftien jaar zonnewagens de norm zijn. Voor het eerste model hebben zich inmiddels honderdzestig klanten gemeld. Het bedrijf hoopt een serie van bijna duizend stuks te maken. In Finland zal bij productiepartner Valmet Automotive voorlopig één auto per dag van de band rollen.

    Voor het zover is, worden in Helmond nog zestien prototypes gemaakt voor de benodigde testen, zodat de wagens de weg op mogen. De afloop daarvan bepaalt ook wanneer de eerste oplevering daadwerkelijk zal plaatsvinden.

    Energielabel van auto's
    Maarten Steinbuch, hoogleraar Systeem- en Regeltechniek aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en tevens zelfbenoemd 'ambassadeur' van Lightyear, verwacht dat komend jaar vooral in het teken zal staan van hoe zuinig een auto is. 'In het Verenigd Koninkrijk krijgen auto's bijvoorbeeld een energielabel. Dat wordt de volgende battle tussen producenten: hoe kun je met dezelfde batterij meer kilometers afleggen. Het telt straks niet meer hoeveel pk de auto heeft, maar hoe efficiënt de auto rijdt.'

    Lightyear heeft de wagen bijvoorbeeld compleet opnieuw opgebouwd. Zo heeft de auto vier elektromotoren achter de wielen, in plaats van één grote motor onder de kap. Dat bespaart gewicht. Het eerste prototype kan op één lading 600 tot 800 kilometer rijden, claimt het bedrijf. Via de zonnecellen is het mogelijk om op een goede zomerdag 50 tot 70 kilometer af te leggen, en daarnaast kan de auto ook met een stekker opladen. Vanaf 2024 of 2025 wil het bedrijf inzetten op productie in hogere volumes van goedkopere versies, met een kleinere batterij.

    Nichemarkt?
    Toch gelooft niet iedereen in de zonne-auto. De Duitse autoprofessor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer is sceptisch. Hij verwacht dat de markt onbelangrijk blijft en dat, na de eerste hype, de markt voor zonnewagens meer een nichemarkt zal zijn. 'Als er op middellange termijn jaarlijks 3000 auto's worden verkocht, zou dat een goede zaak zijn. Ik geloof niet in het grotere verhaal.'

    Logischerwijs zijn de verwachtingen van Hoefsloot wel groter. Volgens de medeoprichter versnelt Lightyear de transitie naar elektrische voertuigen: met zonnewagens ben je minder afhankelijk van de installatie van laadpalen. 'Wat mensen weerhoudt om een elektrische voertuig te kopen zijn doorgaans de kosten van een auto, de actieradius - dus hoever je ermee kunt rijden - en de beschikbaarheid van laadpalen in de omgeving. Die onzekerheden nemen we weg met onze zonneauto. En hoe meer sceptici, hoe harder we werken om te laten zien dat het wel kan.'

    The startup from Munich is facing bankruptcy twice. Nonetheless, the solar car maker Sono Motors made the successful leap on the US stock exchange Nasdaq. Sun cars are outsiders who, according to the expert Dudenhöffer, will never make their way out of their niche.

    For the solar car maker Sono Motors, going public was about everything. The startup from Munich recently warned that without the proceeds from the sale of the shares, there was a risk of running out of money in December. With its brilliant start on the US stock exchange Nasdaq, bankruptcy is off the table for the time being, because the company is expected to raise around 135 million dollars by going on the floor. The shares closed on Wednesday with a price increase of 155 percent to 38.20 dollars.

    “We are proud of our successful debut on the Nasdaq in New York. This is a milestone for Sono Motors and brings us an important step further towards series production of the Sion,” says founder Laurin Hahn ntv.de. As a listed company, you now have the opportunity to raise the required capital through further financing rounds on the stock market.

    The proceeds from the IPO should flow into the completion of the next generation of prototypes. “These prototypes consist of series components that we use for tests, certifications and further testing of our solar technology,” says Hahn.

    Sono Motors placed 10 million common shares for $ 15 per share. This corresponds to 15 percent of the company’s shares. The Sono Motors share was traded at prices around 27 dollars after the launch. The start-up would theoretically have a market value of around $ 2 billion. Hahn and the co-founder and CEO Jona Christians continue to hold the majority of the voting rights.
    Already 16,000 reservations

    The first Sono model with the name “Sion” is to be delivered in 2023 and can not only be charged at the socket, but also via solar cells that are built into the body. ” What really convinces me here about the car is the solar system in combination with electricity, the car simply charges itself when it is parked – when it is stationary. I think that’s absolutely great, it makes me a little more independent, “says an interested buyer, ntv. And he’s not alone: ??According to the company, there are already a good 16,000 paid reservations.

    The startup’s solar car has a total range of 305 kilometers at a top speed of 140 kilometers per hour. The Sion can travel 35 kilometers with pure solar energy. Just enough for stretches in the city. For founder Hahn, price, range and infrastructure are the major hurdles in electromobility. He wants to remove two of the three hurdles by using solar energy. And that is the range and the charging infrastructure. Cost: 28,500 euros.

    As early as 2019, the founders were on the verge of having to bury their project. Back then, because an investor jumped out at short notice. According to the founder, he wanted to break up their company. “We had the choice between: Do we accept this offer or do we stick to our values, why we started the whole thing in the first place,” Hahn told ntv at the time. That was an incredibly difficult decision, but in retrospect it was the right one. “We then decided on our values, our path. But that also meant: We have a liquidity bottleneck.”

    In an emergency, Sono Motors turned to the community and asked for a further injection of funds. The result: more than 50 million euros in 50 days. A very clear confirmation for Hahn. “So many people who believe in us and are also willing to invest money, although the product is honestly not yet on the market. That strengthened us and showed us: People want Sion, they want change, they want something change, “said Hahn ntv.
    Are the costs and benefits in the right relationship?

    Despite the support, solar cars are still outsiders. Will that change soon? A plastic body that is fully equipped with 248 solar cells will remain a niche product, according to car expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer from the CAR Center Automotive Research. “Sono Motors is unlikely to become a major player in the car market with its solar car – like Tesla, for example,” he tells ntv.de. In his opinion, the technology could at most be a supplement to the electricity requirements of the electric car. How useful this is will be seen when the vehicles have to assert themselves in the market.

    The solar cell is not a breakthrough technology. “Webasto brought sunroofs with solar cells onto the market a few years ago and thus did not have a resounding market success,” says Dudenhöffer. A purely solar car might make sense in the Sahara, but not in our latitudes. According to the auto expert, it will never be possible to drive solely with solar energy in the future. This then raises the question of whether the costs and benefits for the customer are in the right relationship.

    At Sono Motors, however, we are optimistic about the future. “Our solar technology was developed in such a way that it can be integrated and licensed in a large number of vehicles,” says Hahn. These also went well beyond the Sion, such as buses, trailers, trucks, campers, trains and boats. By storing additional electricity from solar cells, Sono solar technology also reduces the number of vehicle charging processes and thus significantly lowers operating costs for customers.

    Webasto Charging Business in North America on Fast Lane

    Family-owned company Webasto, headquartered in Stockdorf near Munich, is on its way to becoming market leader in direct sales of EV charging cables to manufacturers of hybrid and electric cars in North America. In 2022, the company’s market share in this segment is expected to jump to more than 40 percent, with 400,000 EV chargers sold. By 2027, the order volume will reach as many as 4.9 million EV chargers. The customers include three of the world’s largest automakers.

    The EV chargers can be used to charge electric vehicles from domestic and industrial sockets with a power rating of up to 7.7 kW. Automatic adapter recognition and current limitation coupled with temperature monitoring ensure that overload or overheating conditions cannot occur during charging.

    The charging cables are manufactured at Webasto’s plant in Irapuato, Mexico. In addition to the EV charging cable business, Webasto is also seeing signs of growing demand for wallboxes in North America. The order volume here amounts to 360,000 AC charging stations by 2027. Demand in this area is expected to increase significantly following the introduction of the first DC wallbox, which is planned for 2023. Webasto will be manufacturing charging solutions in the double-digit million range over the next few years worldwide.
