European Commission, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and EIB Advance Partnership in Climate Technologies that Include Hydrogen November 3, 2021 Fuel Cells Works, European Commission, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and EIB aAdvance Partnership in Climate Technologies At the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Bill Gates, the Founder of Breakthrough Energy, together with European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer, have officially entered into a pioneering partnership that will boost investments in critical climate technologies. Today’s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding follows up on the initial announcement made in June this year at the Mission Innovation Ministerial Conference. The partnership between Commission, European Investment Bank and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst will mobilise up to €820 million ($1 billion) between 2022-2026 to accelerate the deployment and rapidly commercialise innovative technologies that will help deliver European Green Deal ambitions and the EU’s 2030 climate targets. Each euro of public funds is expected to leverage three euros of private funds. Investments will be directed towards a portfolio of EU-based projects with high potential in four sectors: clean hydrogen; sustainable aviation fuels; direct air capture; and long-duration energy storage. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said: “The time for action is now. The climate challenge requires us to invest in high-risk innovations and to eliminate the ‘green premium’ involved in commercialising new technologies. I cannot wait to see the technologies coming to the market. The EU-Catalyst partnership is another step on the way to making Europe the first climate neutral and climate innovation continent. I look to Member States, industry and others to join the climate innovation race.”fuelcellsworks.com/news/european-comm...

RWE & John Cockerill to Build Test Facility for FUREC Strategic Research Institute Published on : 08 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am RWE and partners John Cockerill are to jointly build a testing facility in Germany which will optimize a key stage in the process of turning household waste into hydrogen. The facility, called a torrefaction plant, will be built at RWE’s innovation centre in Niederaußem in Germany and will test the production of feedstock pellets made from waste, to be used in the company’s innovative FUREC waste-to-hydrogen initiative. RWE is going to invest EUR 3 million in the pilot plant, which is scheduled to be operational in July 2022. At the heart of the new plant in Niederaußem is the NESA Multi-Hearth furnace, a technology supplied by John Cockerill Environment. In this furnace, waste pellets will be roasted (torrefied) in such a way that they can be ground into dust and converted into hydrogen and CO2 in a later thermal process under the exclusion of air. The pilot plant is being built at the RWE Innovation Centre in Niederaußem because the company already has the technology for generating and storing gases there. The facility is the next step in the development of RWE's FUREC project (Fuse Reuse Recycle) – a large-scale chemical recycling plant at the Chemelot industrial park in Limburg, in the Netherlands. There, RWE plans to produce circular and green hydrogen and CO2 for the chemical industry from municipal waste. In the process, FUREC will recycle the hydrogen and CO2 that normally escape into the atmosphere when waste is incinerated or landfilled. Because much of the waste used as feedstock will be of organic origin (e.g., textiles, paper), 50% of the hydrogen recycled in this way will be green. The rest is considered circular hydrogen because it is recovered from plastic waste and used industrially. In this way, it remains in the material cycle.
DaimlerTruck & BP to Deplop Hydrogen Infrastructure for UK Freight Strategic Research Institute Published on : 08 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am Daimler Truck AG and BP Advanced Mobility Limited announced plans to work together to help accelerate the introduction of a hydrogen network, supporting the roll-out of a key technology for the decarbonization of UK freight transport. They intend to pilot both the development of hydrogen infrastructure and the introduction of hydrogen-powered fuel-cell trucks in the UK. Under their memorandum of understanding (MoU), BP will assess the feasibility of designing, constructing, operating and supplying a network of up to 25 hydrogen refuelling stations across the UK by 2030. These stations would be supplied by BP with ‘green’ hydrogen – generated from water using renewable power. Complementing this, Daimler Truck expects to deliver hydrogen-powered fuel-cell trucks to its UK customers from 2025. Daimler Truck has the ambition to offer only new vehicles that are CO2-neutral in driving operation (“from tank to wheel”) in Europe, North America and Japan by 2039. The company is focussed on both CO2-neutral technologies battery power and hydrogen-based fuel-cells. Currently, the truck manufacturer is testing a new enhanced prototype of its Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck on public roads in Germany. The first series-produced GenH2 Truck are expected to be handed over to customers starting in 2027. Daimler Truck has a clear preference for liquid hydrogen. In this state, the energy carrier has a far higher energy density in relation to volume than gaseous hydrogen. As a result, the tanks of a fuel-cell truck using liquid hydrogen are much smaller and, due to the lower pressure, significantly lighter. This gives the trucks more cargo space and a higher payload. At the same time, more hydrogen can be carried, which significantly increases the trucks’ range. This will make the series version of the GenH2 Truck, like conventional diesel trucks, suitable for multi-day, difficult-to-plan long-haul transport and where the daily energy output is high. Convenience and mobility are core for BP’s strategy, including working with partners, to help deliver the future of mobility and services for customers. BP already has 11,000 electric vehicle charging points globally and is expanding its network to 70,000 by 2030. Complementing this today’s agreement represents BP’s first steps towards deploying hydrogen for transport. It also intends to develop hydrogen refuelling stations in Europe and already has plans for hydrogen refuelling stations in Germany.
Researcher Replace Ti with SS in PEMWE for Hydrogen Production Strategic Research Institute Published on : 09 Nov, 2021, 4:35 am Researchers have reduced the cost of making a Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyser by developing stainless steel-based components to replace titanium ones. PEMWEs can be used for green hydrogen production but the cost of titanium components had been limiting their commercial viability, a problem that this research could help address. The research brief said “When using uncoated SS components in the PEMWE cell, the cell depolarizes rapidly, reaching 2 V at only 0.15 A cm-2. After the application of non-precious metal coatings of Ti and Nb/Ti on the ss-BPP and ss-PTL, respectively, the current density can be increased by a factor of 13 while maintaining the same performance. Extensive physical and electrochemical characterization supported by pore network modelling shows that the Nb/Ti coating on the ss-PTL leads to efficient water and gas transport at the interface with the anode. The PEMWE cell with coated ss components was evaluated in an accelerated stress test for more than 1000 h. No sign of Fe contamination in either the membrane or the electrodes is observed at the end of the test. With our results, we demonstrate that PEMWE cells can be manufactured almost entirely in ss, facilitating an unprecedented cost reduction in this technology and advancing the widespread use of green H2.” German Aerospace Centre has previously demonstrated that stainless steel can serve as a base material for bipolar plates by using a coating to protect it against corrosion. And other researchers have experimented with porous transport layers made from coated and uncoated stainless steel. The porous transport layers and the bipolar plates represent between 60-70% of the PEMWE stack cost so the opportunities for cost savings are significant. Building on their previous work, the team has now developed a working PEMWE cell with mainly stainless steel components. ‘There were two main challenges: protect the stainless steel against corrosion in such an aggressive environment, and use the cheapest stainless steel porous structure and modify it to achieve performances equal to any commercial electrolysers. They used vacuum plasma spraying to coat four-layer mesh-type stainless steel porous transport layers with niobium and titanium. Using these coated porous transport layers alongside titanium-coated stainless steel bipolar plates on the anode side, and uncoated versions on the cathode side, they tested the cell’s durability using an accelerated stress test. Not only did the coating protect against corrosion and catalyst poisoning, it also reduced electrical resistance. This meant an efficiency increase of 12% and comparable performance to commercial electrolysers. While this is important in reducing the cost of hydrogen production, Gago points out there are still challenges ahead. ‘There is still much to be done to reduce the cost of the electrolyser, electricity, water and many other factors that contribute to the high cost of green hydrogen. However, the use of stainless steel in PEMWE should have a positive impact on the cost, especially at large scales.’ Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysers running on surplus renewable energy. It’s a promising alternative to fossil fuels and renewable technologies that rely on certain weather conditions and geographical locations. The most commonly used electrolytic methods for generating hydrogen are Alkaline Water Electrolysis and Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyser. While PEMWE could potentially produce over 12 times more hydrogen than AWE, it has a higher capital cost due to its titanium cell components, namely its porous transport layers and bipolar plates. Titanium is used as it can resist the corrosive electrolysis conditions and avoids poisoning the device’s catalyst-coated membrane.
