South Korean steel maker POSCO Group announced on 5 September that it would showcase its hydrogen business vision at the 2021 H2 Mobility+Energy Show to be held at KINTEX Convention Center in Goyang in Gyeonggi Province of South Korea from September 8 to 11. A total of six group companies, including POSCO, POSCO International, POSCO E&C, POSCO Energy, POSCO SPS and Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology will participate in this expo. The exhibition booth of POSCO Group will cover an area of 540 square meters and will consist of themes of group hydrogen business vision, hydrogen reduction steelmaking, hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and distribution and hydrogen utilization.

In the very center of the booth, POSCO Group's hydrogen-reduced steelmaking method is presented. POSCO is going to introduce the principle of hydrogen-reduced steel and a virtual steel mill implemented through it for the first time in Korea by visualizing it with models and images. Hydrogen-reduced iron is a core technology that can produce iron without carbon dioxide emission unlike the existing blast furnace method by using hydrogen as a reducing agent instead of coal.

In addition, the business model that POSCO Group is promoting in the hydrogen production field will also be exhibited. POSCO plans to produce 500,000 tons of blue hydrogen by 2030, which captures and stores carbon dioxide generated in the process of producing 70,000 tons of grey hydrogen through by-product gas and LNG reforming of steel mills by 2025. The current status of such business promotion will be revealed through concrete models and videos at this fair. POSCO Group's solutions applied to hydrogen storage and distribution will also be unveiled.

South Korean government aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with plans to invest 12 trillion won into related industries and policies next year as the first step. In order to back up the government's initiatives, several major conglomerates are set to update their investment plans for hydrogen-centric businesses. Top-tier companies including Hyundai Motor Group, SK Group and Lotte Group have formed an alliance to launch a hydrogen council aimed at cutting carbon emissions. The official launch ceremony, to be held on September 8, will be attended by Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin.

Major Korean conglomerates, including Hyundai Motor Group, SK, POSCO, Hanwha and Hyosung, have vowed to invest over 43 trillion won (USD 37 billion) by 2030 to establish comprehensive hydrogen value chain and get closer to their zero-emission goals. Among them, Hyundai Motor Group, the nation's largest hydrogen mobility company, plans to exhibit its new FCEVs, and its affiliates, including Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Rotem, will introduce new fuel cell systems and fuel cell electric trams.

Vale Starts Operating Autonomous Trucks in Iron Ore Complex Brazil
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 08, 2021 10:00 am

Vale started operating six autonomous haul trucks in the Carajás iron ore complex in the state of Pará in Brazil. By the end of the year, ten vehicles will be operating at the site. This initiative is part of a set of actions aimed at increasing employee safety, making the operation more environmentally sustainable and obtaining gains in competitiveness. The implementation is being accompanied by a human resources plan to train employees to work with new digital technologies.

Capable of moving 320 metric tons at a time, the autonomous trucks were being tested in an isolated area in Carajás since 2019. Last week they started the final testing phase at the N4E mine and yesterday, September 1st, they officially went live. In the entire Carajás Complex, four autonomous drills are already in operation and by the end of the year this number will get to seven drills.

The autonomous operation began to be implemented by Vale at the Brucutu mine, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2016, and today it covers all 13 haul trucks at that unit. Since the implementation in Brucutu, no accident caused by trucks has been recorded. The autonomous trucks are controlled by computer systems, GPS, radar and artificial intelligence, covering the route between the mining front and the unloading area. Upon detecting risks, the equipment stops its operations until the path is cleared again. The safety system's sensors are capable of detecting both larger objects such as large rocks and other trucks, as well as human beings in the vicinity of the road. Therefore, risky situations, such as tipping and collision, were eliminated.

In the autonomous truck there is no operator in the cabin. But people continue to play a relevant role in the operation. Other equipment circulating through the mine, such as motor graders and tractors, will continue to be manned. Therefore, the operators of these vehicles received training to interact with autonomous trucks. 32 operators have already been trained and by the end of the year this number will reach 120. There will be 208 hours of training for each operator, totaling almost 25,000 hours.

Over the next 12 months, the operation will be assisted by the truck supplier. After this period, it is expected that Vale fully assumes the operation. When this occurs, new jobs will be created in control rooms, far from the mining front.

Beursblik: potentie Aperam nog niet ingeprijsd
    Degroof Petercam herhaalt koopadvies.

Iron ore Mining is Driving Deforestation in Chhattisgarh
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 09, 2021 09:35 am

Ms Deepanwita Gita Niyogi in an article in The Scroll reported that iron ore mining is driving deforestation in Chhattisgarh and hurting its Adivasis. The latest data by the Chhattisgarh forest department reveals that at least 4,920 hectares of forest land have been diverted over the past few years for mining of iron ore in Chhattisgarh. The massive diversion of forest areas is also leading to local people and experts raising concerns related to the environment and rights of the Adivasi communities guaranteed under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. The Adivasi communities depend on forests, and if they vanish, the communities will face a dark future

The Bastar region in south Chhattisgarh comprises the heavily forested area dominated by Adivasi communities who depend on forests for livelihood. But the leases granted for iron ore mining which require large-scale clearance of forests is threatening the lives of the local people. In some cases, the locals allege that the permissions have been secured using fake documents. For instance, in the Narayanpur district, Jayaswal Neco Industries Limited was granted the lease for mining iron ore in about 192 hectares of reserve forest area in Aamdai Ghati, a hilly area full of ore deposits. The mining started in 2016 and now the company wants to enhance production even as the region has witnessed severe opposition to the project. The local people alleged that the consent of the gram sabha was not taken for seeking diversion of forests in the area.

The Rowghat mine in the Matla reserve forest spanning both Kanker and Narayanpur districts attracted considerable attention due to deforestation. Rowghat has the second largest deposit of iron ore in the state with an estimated reserve of 731 million tonnes. There have been violations in the forest as well as environmental clearances. Though the consent of the gram sabha has been taken, it is not under the true spirit of the law. There is no clarity on the number of villages that will be affected and the extent of forest cover lost. Steel Authority of India Limited’s Bhilai Steel Plant, which has got the lease of 2,028.79 hectares, says on record that 16 villages will be impacted by mining in the core area but I feel over 30 villages will be affected

In the Dantewada district, about 315 hectares of forest has been proposed for diversion for the Bailadila iron ore mine project deposit 13 at Kirandul. It is being developed as part of a joint venture between the National Mineral Development Corporation and the Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation based in Raipur. It is also a hilly and forested area, and the people of the Adivasi community are severely against it as they consider one of the hills, Nandraj, sacred.

Chhattisgarh is home to some of India’s most precious forests but it is also an area rich in minerals such as iron ore. According to the Chhattisgarh government, the iron ore deposits in the state are found in rocks that form a part of the discontinuous hill range of 370 kilometres in length that spans several districts such as Dantewada, Bastar, Kanker, Narayanpur, Rajnandgaon, Durg and Kabirdham. Chhattisgarh has 4,031 million tonnes of iron ore reserve (hematite) which accounts for about 19% of the total iron ore reserves in India.

Korean Court Dismisses Wartime Labor Suit against Nippon Steel
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 09, 2021 09:16 am

Japanese media reported that a South Korean district court has dismissed a wartime labor related damages lawsuit against Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel Corp, on the grounds that the plaintiffs launched the suit after a statute of limitations on the civil case had expired. The same Seoul Central District Court judge dismissed a similar suit against another Japanese company, Mitsubishi Materials Corp, last month on the same grounds. The two suits were filed in 2019 and 2017, respectively, by relatives of laborers during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. In both cases, Judge Pak Song In determined that plaintiffs had lost their right to seek claims in 2015.

After the South Korean Supreme Court in 2018 ordered Nippon Steel and another Japanese company to compensate plaintiffs over forced labor during World War II, a spate of rulings against Japanese firms followed in lower courts. Three years earlier, in 2012, the Supreme Court, in a ground breaking decision, said the right of individuals such as former wartime laborers to pursue compensation from Japan was not nullified by a 1965 agreement between Japan and South Korea.

The Civil Code in South Korea stipulates that victims lose their right to claim damages if they do not seek claims within three years of discovering harm. In the two district court rulings.
