    Joel Greenberg, the former confidant of Representative Matt Gaetz, has agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors.

    Joel Greenberg, the former confidant of Representative Matt Gaetz, pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court in Orlando to a range of charges, including sex trafficking a minor, as part of a plea deal that will require him to help in other Justice Department investigations.

    “Are you pleading guilty to these charges because you are guilty?” said United States Magistrate Court Judge Leslie Hoffman.

    “Yes,” said Mr. Greenberg, who wore a dark blue jumpsuit and white surgical mask and was handcuffed.

    Mr. Greenberg admitted in a plea agreement filed on Friday to a range of crimes. The hearing on Monday formalized that agreement, and Mr. Greenberg answered questions from a judge before admitting his guilt.

    Mr. Gaetz is under investigation into whether he violated sex trafficking laws by paying the same 17-year-old for sex. On Monday, Mr. Gaetz’s name was not mentioned in court, nor was it referenced in the court documents filed Friday.

    Mr. Greenberg is facing over 12 years in prison but it was unclear when he will be sentenced. As part of his plea agreement, he needs to provide substantial help to the Justice Department’s prosecutions of others in exchange for help convincing a judge to give him a more lenient sentence.

    Defense lawyers typically want to delay the sentencing for as long as possible in order to give their clients the most time to help the government.

    Mr. Greenberg, a Republican, was a newcomer to politics when he won a local election in 2016 to become the tax collector in Seminole County, Fla., north of Orlando.

    Shortly after taking office, according to court documents, he began committing a range of fraud and other crimes, including using taxpayer money to pay women for sex and buy sports memorabilia.

    He was first indicted last June. At the end of last year, Mr. Greenberg began cooperating with the government as he realized that prosecutors had substantial evidence against him and that he could spend decades in prison if he went to trial and lost.

    Mr. Greenberg’s lawyer, Fritz Scheller, had told reporters after a court hearing last month that “I am sure Matt Gaetz is not feeling very comfortable today.” But he declined to elaborate.

    In response to questions outside the courtroom on Monday about whether Mr. Greenberg will cooperate against Mr. Gaetz, Mr. Scheller provided a slightly more measured response.

    “He is bound by it the plea agreement — he will honor it,” Mr. Scheller said.

    Trump heeft geld lopen uitdelen aan bedrijven, die in de problemen kwamen door de corona pandemie.
    Een goed streven, de regering gaf geld aan de bedrijven, onder voorwaarde dat zij hun werknemers behielden.
    De Democraten eisten bij het invoeren van het plan, vorig jaar voor jaar, dat er een controle zou zijn om fraude te voorkomen.

    Echter na korte tijd heeft Trump deze controle instantie stopgezet.

    Hierdoor kon ongecontroleerd geld naar bedrijven gestuurd worden.

    Het nieuwe Department of Justice van Biden onder leiding van AG (Attorney General) Merrick Garland gaat alsnog controleren of er bedrijven zijn, die gefraudeerd hebben bij hun steun aanvragen.

    The federal government responded to the far-reaching economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with critical COVID-19 relief to workers and businesses affected by the pandemic. There has already been extraordinary vigilance, across the federal government, to help ensure that those much-needed public funds make it to Americans who are depending on them to feed their families and keep their businesses open. While it is impossible to keep all those intent on carrying out illegal COVID fraud schemes from doing so, the Department of Justice and its partner agencies have already been working to hold hundreds of bad actors accountable.

    Biden spreekt steun uit voor wapenstilstand in Midden-Oosten

    De Amerikaanse president Joe Biden heeft in een telefoongesprek met de Israëlische regeringsleider Benjamin Netanyahu zijn steun uitgesproken voor een wapenstilstand tussen Israël en Hamas in de Gazastrook. Maar het Witte Huis stelde in een verklaring ook dat Biden bevestigde dat Israël het recht heeft zich te verdedigen.

    Biden staat onder toenemende druk om via diplomatieke kanalen een einde te maken aan het opgelaaide geweld tussen Israël en militante Palestijnen. De president eiste in zijn gesprek met Netanyahu echter niet een onmiddellijke wapenstilstand.

    Netanyahu zei maandagavond in een toespraak op de Israëlische televisie geen haast te hebben met het beëindigen van de luchtaanvallen op doelen in de Gazastrook. 'We gaan door zolang dat nodig is om de vrede en veiligheid voor alle inwoners van Israël te herstellen', aldus de premier na overleg met de top van de strijdkrachten en de inlichtingendiensten.

    Raketten en dodentol
    De Israëlische strijdkrachten verklaarden maandagavond dat Hamas en andere Palestijnse groeperingen zo'n 3350 raketten vanuit Gaza op Tel Aviv en andere steden in Israël hebben afgevuurd sinds het begin van het nieuwe conflict ruim een week geleden. Maandag waren het er zo'n tweehonderd.

    Bij de Israëlische aanvallen van de luchtmacht en grondtroepen zijn volgens Israël minstens 130 militanten omgekomen. Gezondheidsinstanties in Gaza spreken echter van 212 doden, onder wie 61 kinderen en 36 vrouwen. In Israël hebben de raketaanvallen uit de Gazastrook tot nu toe tien mensenlevens geëist.

    In ieder geval gaat het Department of Justice onder leiding van Merrick Garland een Task Force instellen, om het ten onrechte door de regering Trump uitgekeerde steun geld aan bedrijven, aan te pakken.

    Trump speelde socialistische Sinterklaas voor de bedrijven door ze geld te geven om de Corona crisis door te komen.
    Vele mijarden dollars gingen naar Trump's bevriende bedrijven zonder dat zij er recht op hadden.
    De controle, of er niet gefraudeerd kon worden, werd door Trump uitgeschakeld.

    Alsnog wordt de steunverlening onderzocht en bedrijven die gefraudeerd hebben aangepakt, door het geld terug te vorderen.

    Bovendien wordt de hertelling niet uitgevoerd door een neutrale organisatie met ervaring. Dus mochten de resultaten substantieel anders uitpakken, dan zal er alsnog een nieuwe, betere controle nodig zijn.

    Why it matters: The decision indicates the Biden administration is not willing to compromise its relationship with Germany over this pipeline, and it underscores the difficulties President Biden faces in matching actions to rhetoric on a tougher approach to Russia.

    Driving the news: The State Department will imminently send its mandatory 90-day report to Congress listing entities involved in Nord Stream 2 that deserve sanctions. Sources familiar with the drafting of the report tell Axios the State Department plans to call for sanctions against a handful of Russian ships.

    The State Department will also acknowledge that the corporate entity in charge of the project (Nord Stream 2 AG) and its CEO (Putin crony and former East German intelligence officer Matthias Warnig) are engaged in sanctionable activities.
    However, the State Department will waive the applications of those sanctions, citing U.S. national interests.
    This planned move seems at odds with Secretary of State Antony Blinken's statement, made during his confirmation hearing: "I am determined to do whatever we can to prevent that completion" of Nord Stream 2.
    Between the lines: This planned move also sets up a bizarre situation in which the Biden administration will be sanctioning ships involved in the building of Nord Stream 2 but refusing to sanction the actual company in charge of the project.

    Sources close to the situation say that top Biden officials have determined that the only way to potentially stop the project — which is 95% complete — is to sanction the German end users of the gas.
    And the Biden administration is not willing to rupture its relationship with Germany over Nord Stream 2.
    The big picture: As Axios has previously reported, the completion of Nord Stream 2 would be a huge geopolitical win for Putin and give him substantial new leverage in Europe.

    Russian gas currently has to pass through Ukraine on its way to Europe. Bypassing Ukraine with a direct pipeline to Germany is an opportunity for Russia to advance its goal of isolating its former client state, now a fledgling democracy, from Western Europe.
    Russia has a long track record of cutting critical supplies to its neighbors during disputes, including cutting off gas to Ukraine.
    The pipeline could be finished by the summer without a major intervention to stop it.
    A State Department spokesperson told Axios the Biden administration had made clear that companies participating in Nord Stream 2 could face sanctions and would "continue to underscore U.S. strong, bipartisan opposition to this Russian malign influence project."

    "The Biden administration has been clear that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a Russian geopolitical project that threatens European energy security and that of Ukraine and eastern flank NATO allies and partners," the spokesperson said.
    The State Department spokesperson would not confirm the waivers or any details about the imminent report.
    Administration sources contend any waivers applied to sanctions could be removed at any time.

    They also argue the act of sanctioning and then waiving an entity establishes leverage over it, given the company would know that at any moment, the U.S. could reinstate the sanction.
    They also add that the Biden administration's goal remains to see that the pipeline doesn't go into use.

    Een voor velen onbegrijpelijke knie buiging van Biden naar Putin.

    Biden's standpunt tot nu toe was dat hij tegen de pipe line was omdat het Duitsland te afhankelijk maakt van Rusland.
    En nu dit cadeautje aan Putin.

    Terwijl Putin nog steeds niet gestraft is voor

    Van Trump zei men dat hij Putin gezind was, maar Trump voerde wel de sancties over Nordstream 2 in en dat was tegen het zere been van Putin.

    Het is Angela Merkel's wens deze pijpleiding te voltooien om Duitsland van gas te voorzien.
    Biden zegt dat hij zijn beslissing heeft genomen om de goede relatie met Duitsland te behouden.
