Green Revolution Fuels Copper Demand, Copper Deficit Looming “While conventional cars have 18-49 pounds of copper, hybrid electric vehicles contain approximately 85 pounds, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles use 132 pounds, battery electric vehicles contain 183 pounds" – Copper Alliance “BHP now estimates that “at least 132 million EVs will be on the world's roads in 2035” - BHP “Over the next 26 years the world is going to mine more copper than what has been mined in all history.” – USGS, Chief Economist, 2018 “To enable any plausible growth in emissionfree energy, more copper will be required in the next 25 years than was consumed in the last 500 years.” – Rio Tinto

Why are major mining companies so intent on securing new supplies of copper?
Quite simply, they’re running out of ore.
Copper, the Most Critical Metal:
www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article68094.html Even with expansions at existing mines and the ramp-up of the relatively few new copper mines like Cobre Panama, Radomiro Tomic and Toquepalain, it will not be enough to meet the onslaught of demand that is coming from China as it continues to modernize and urbanize, and electric vehicles, which use three times as much copper as regular ones. In 2016 Chinese automakers sold 28 million cars. If China follows through on its promise to go 100% electric, that would mean 2,380,000,000 kilograms of copper. At the current production rate of 20 million tonnes a year, that’s 119 years worth of copper! Just to produce enough copper for electric cars in China. Do we expect 100% EV penetration? No. But the shift to electrification of our transportation system is real, it’s not going to go away or stop. Because it’s as real as the shift from wood to coal to fossil fuels and now to lithium. That means massive new copper supplies are needed just for Chinese EVs, whatever the EV penetration eventually turns out to be. And remember there’s the rest of the world to supply for EVs, charging infrastructure, and all of copper’s other uses. Bottom line? We gotta find more copper.
Some of the largest copper mines are seeing their reserves dwindle; they are having to dramatically slow production due to major capital-intensive projects to move operations from open pit to underground.
Rio eyes production from Mongolia copper project in 2022 Budget for underground mine hits $6.75bn and draws angry response from Ulaanbaatar Rio Tinto expects to achieve first production from the expansion of its giant copper mine in the Gobi Desert by October 2022 but only if it can reach agreement on several outstanding issues with the government of Mongolia and a Canadian subsidiary. The company said on Wednesday that the budget for the first phase of the underground project at Oyu Tolgoi would come in at $6.75bn and it would start caving operations once it had received outstanding approvals, finalised a new power source and reached agreement on financing. Its comments drew an angry response from Ulaanbaatar, which said it was surprised at Rio’s multiple references to “government approvals”.www.ft.com/content/5ac622fd-653a-4c8b...
Copper Market in Deficit in January to November 2020 Published on : 28 Jan, 2021 , 5:36 am World Bureau of Metal Statistics announced that the copper market recorded a deficit of 1203 kt in January to November 2020 which follows a deficit of 383 kt in the whole of 2019. Reported stocks at the end of November 2020 were 11 kt lower than at the end of December 2019. Net deliveries into LME warehouses were 5.2 kt and Comex stocks increased by 37.8 kt. Shanghai stocks fell by 30.7 kt during the eleven month period. Demand is measured on an apparent basis and it is likely that the full effects of national lockdowns have not been fully reflected in the trade statistics. No allowance is made in the consumption calculation for unreported stock changes, particularly in the Chinese government stockpile. World mine production in January to November 2020 was 18.96 million tonnes which was 0.1 per cent higher than in the same period in 2019. Global refined production for January to November 2020 was 21.77 million tonnes up 2.0 per cent compared with the previous year with significant increases recorded in China (up 902 kt) and in Chile (up 72 kt). Global demand for January to November 2020 was 22.97 million tonnes compared with 21.77 million tonnes for the same months of 2019. Chinese apparent demand for the period January to November 2020 was 13.45 million tonnes which was 16.6 per cent higher than the first eleven months of 2019. Reported output of semi manufactures rose by 8.6 per cent which suggests that the apparent demand figure overstates real demand. EU28 production rose by 3 per cent and demand was 187 kt lower than the comparable 2019 total. In November 2020, refined copper production was 2141.5 kt and demand was 2179.5 kt. Copper price blasts to 9-year high on demand optimism. MINING.COM Staff Writer | February 18, 2021 | 10:38 am Intelligence Markets China Aluminum Copper Lead Nickel Tin Zinc Copper price blasts to 9-year high on demand optimism Image: Glencore via Instagram. Copper prices jumped to a nine-year high on Thursday as Chinese investors returned from a week-long holiday, adding impetus to a rally that has almost doubled prices since the height of coronavirus worries last March.Copper for delivery in March was up 2.1% to $3.9025 a pound (about $8,603.58 a tonne) by 1 p.m. in New York, after a slight pullback from the previous day’s trading. Earlier in the session, the contract had reached $3.931 ($8,666.42), its highest since September 2011. SIGN UP FOR THE COPPER DIGEST The resumed rally came amid massive volumes. By lunchtime more than 4.3 billion pounds of copper, worth $17 billion at today’s prices had changed hands. Other industrial metals also jumped, with aluminum at its highest since 2018, nickel its strongest since 2014, tin its strongest since 2012 and lead its highest since 2019. Underpinning the rally is resurgent demand in China, the biggest metals consumer, expectations of tight supply, and a rush of speculative investment, with many analysts predicting a multi-year bull run. The most-traded March copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange gained as much as 4.7% to 62,870 yuan ($9,747.29) a tonne, again a level not seen since September 2011. But the market may be moving too fast, analysts at Commerzbank told Reuters. “No new data is available to underpin the pronounced rise in metals prices, particularly in the last few weeks,” they said. “Metals prices are currently being driven to a large extent by speculation, and the upswing is beginning to look excessive.” In January, when copper was already trading near eight-year highs, Wall Street banks were of the belief that the rally can go even further, telling CNBC the metal could reach record highs in the first half of 2022.

Copper price jumps as Chile closes its borders. MINING.COM Staff Writer | April 5, 2021 | 7:04 Copper price jumped on Monday as investors assessed the decision by Chile to close its borders during April due to a spike in covid-19 cases. Copper for delivery in May was up 2.96% by midday, with futures at $4.1075 per pound ($9,035 a tonne) on the Comex market in New York. Click here for an interactive chart of copper prices The world’s top exporter of the metal closed its borders for a month as reported a daily record of 7,830 infections last week, an all-time high for occupied hospital beds, and a nationwide positivity rate of 11%. Chilean citizens and foreign residents are forbidden from entering or leaving the country. All truck drivers are required to present a negative PCR test carried out in the 72 hours before entering the country. The stepped-up border restrictions may disrupt mining activities by delaying equipment replacement. Chile’s copper mines produced 430,100 tonnes in February, a decline of 4.8% compared to the same period of 2020. Last week, Codelco clinched a deal with workers at its Radomiro Tomic mine after they accepted a new contract offer, defusing worries about a potential strike.www.mining.com/copper-price-jumps-as-...
Copper price scales $9,000 after Goldman calls it the new oil Copper resumed its rally on Wednesday, as analysts and executives expect increasing demand and likely low supply to drive prices even higher. Copper for delivery in May was up 2.51% in afternoon trade, with futures at $4.1310 per pound ($9,088 a tonne) on the Comex market in New York. The industrial bellwether metal is crucial in the global push for a greener economy, and right now, the market is facing a supply crunch. US’s post-pandemic recovery and the Biden Administration’s infrastructure plan are helping to build momentum for base metals. Goldman Sachs sees prices average $11,000 per tonne over the next 12 months, according to the Business Insider. By 2025, the metal could be priced at $15,000 a tonne, a rise of 66%, Goldman said in a report titled “Copper is the new oil”. “Discussions of peak oil demand overlook the fact that without a surge in the use of copper and other key metals, the substitution of renewables for oil will not happen,’ the bank said. Demand will therefore significantly increase, by up to 900% to 8.7 million tonnes by 2030, the bank estimates. Should this process be slower, demand will still surge to 5.4 million tonnes, or by almost 600%. BHP president of minerals for the Americas, Ragnar Udd, expressed his optimism for a growing demand in the future at the CRU World Copper Conference in Chile. “A great example is electric vehicles. Policy signposts for rapid electric vehicle (EV) adoption were distinctly favourable over the last (12) months and we have revised our internal EV penetration forecasts upwards,” he said. “These vehicles use four times as much copper as petrol-based cars, and they will also need more infrastructure to connect charging stations to the grid.” BHP expects the world’s Paris-aligned emissions reduction targets to more than double the demand for copper and quadruple for nickel over the next 30 years. “It’s all copper, copper, copper, copper, copper, copper,” said mining magnate Robert Friedland during the CRU World Copper Conference. Mining companies will have to be “real heroes” and governments will need to accept the industry if the world is to successfully transition to clean energy and transport, said the co-chairman of Ivanhoe Mines. Goldman Sachs metals strategist Nicholas Snowdon says environmental policies will drive a capex boom on par with the 1970s and 2000s over the course of the next decade and copper is the core of the green energy transition. “We estimate nearly $16 trillion would have to go into green-focused infrastructure to achieve decarbonisation targets, compared to just $10 trillion in China during the last supercycle.” said Snowdon.www.mining.com/copper-price-scales-90...
China’s Copper Imports to Fall in 2021 Reuters reported that China’s China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association research house Antaike said that China’s refined copper imports are expected to fall by around 27% in 2021 from last year’s bumper levels. After last year’s unprecedented purchases, imports will return to a reasonable level this year, he said. The arbitrage window has closed and Antaike expects China’s own refined copper production to increase in 2021. Antaike sees refined copper imports totalling 3.4 million tonnes in 2021, down 27.2% from 4.67 million tonnes in 2020 Top metals consumer China imported record amounts of copper and aluminium in 2020 as a rapid demand recovery from the impact of COVID-19 pushed Chinese metal prices above international prices, opening up an arbitrage for cheaper overseas metal to flow in. Antaike sees China’s refined copper consumption rising 3.7% this year on strong demand from the auto, real estate and power sectors. Source - Strategic Research Institute
www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-... Bloomberg News 27 april 2021 07:31 CEST Updated on 27 april 2021 11:29 CEST Copper’s stunning rally toward all-time highs above $10,000 is accelerating, with bulls swarming in to profit as stimulus measures, vaccine rollouts and climate pledges fuel a global recovery from the pandemic. Copper on Tuesday extended gains to the highest in a decade as global growth underpinned a rally in metals markets ranging from aluminum to iron ore. Palladium climbed toward $3,000 an ounce. Commodities are advancing toward the highs of the last supercycle, when prices spiked in the early 2000s with a jump in Chinese orders. With copper demand set to soar once more, there are mounting concerns that producers will struggle to plug the gap as they battle a host of technical and regulatory pressures. In top producer Chile, a group of port workers this week began protests against the government’s pandemic relief policies, threatening near-term supplies. In the longer term, producers worry that plans to boost mining royalties could stifle investment and make the country less competitive. “While demand may have done as much as it can for the shorter-term cycle, supply bottlenecks both in raw materials and in freight continue to support,” BMO Capital Markets analysts including Colin Hamilton said in an emailed note. “Meanwhile, positive medium-term global growth dynamics continue to boost financial market interest in commodities as a whole.” Copper rallies towards all-time high Metals led by copper, a barometer of the global economy, are benefiting as the world’s largest economies announce stimulus programs and climate pledges as they rebuild from the coronavirus shock. Investor appetite is increasing, with aggregate open interest in SHFE copper at the highest in more than a year. “Marcoeconomic data continues to point to strong demand conditions for copper,” Vivek Dhar, an analyst with Commonwealth Bank of Australia, wrote in a note, citing industrial output and manufacturing indexes across the globe. Copper rose as much as 2.2% to $9,965 a ton on London Metal Exchange, the highest level since March 2011, before trading at $9,907 as of 10:27 a.m. in London. Prices hit an all-time high of $10,190 in February 2011. Other metals were broadly higher, with aluminum in London at a three-year high. Fed Focus Despite all the bullishness, near-term copper demand from China may weaken. The top user may ship more of the metal overseas amid weaker-than-expected domestic demand, with the so-called arbitrage window for exports opening up for traders for the first time since September, according to Shanghai Metals Market. In other markets, gold was little changed ahead of a two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting. The central bank has primed investors for no major changes in the bank’s language on inflation and rate expectations. U.S. gross domestic product data released Thursday will show how the economic recovery fared in the first quarter, potentially impacting investor demand for havens. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg predict an annualized 6.8% expansion, after a moderate 4.3% rate in the first quarter. Gold declined 0.1% to $1779.66 an ounce, after gaining 0.2% on Monday. It advanced the two previous weeks. Silver was little changed, while platinum declined. Palladium Surge Palladium continued to rise after surpassing its record last week amid bets on surging demand from automakers and supply issues at top miner MMC Norilsk Nickel PJSC. HSBC Holdings Plc said the metal could rise past $3,100 an ounce due to a widening deficit, before dropping to $2,740 by the end of the year. “High prices will likely encourage the mobilization of largely unquantifiable above ground stocks,” analyst James Steel wrote in a note, while substitution of cheaper platinum in autocatalysts should start to clip demand. — With assistance by Charlie Zhu, Mark Burton, Winnie Zhu, and Eddie Spence

www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2021/05/10/koper-on...
www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2021/05/13/een-supe...
New bull chart for $30,000 copper price: porphyries nearly mined out Frik Els | May 14, 2021 | 12:05 pm Intelligence Markets Australia Canada Latin America USA Copper New bull case for $30,000 copper price: porphyries nearly mined out Bad moon rising over porphyry deposits. Radomiro Tomic, Chile. Image from Codelco. Predictions for copper at double or triple today’s level is a fairly recent phenomenon – and bears still outnumber bulls as to what’s next for the bellwether metal. Wall Street natural resource investment house Goehring & Rozencwajg Associates confirmed their place in the superbull camp this week, predicting a copper price north of $30,000: “The previous copper bull market took place between 2001 and 2011 and saw prices rise seven-fold: from $0.60 to $4.62 per pound. The fundamentals today are even more bullish. “We would not be surprised to see copper prices again advance a minimum of seven-fold before this bull market is over. Using $1.95 as our starting point, we expect copper prices to potentially peak near $15 per pound by the latter part of this decade.” The rosy demand side for copper has been well documented and Goehring & Rozencwajg focuses on supply, specifically depletion in their latest commentary. Depletion, surprisingly, is not discussed that often in the industry and according to the authors is little understood, despite its fundamental importance for long-term supply trends. Low and declining grades, uninspiring green and brownfield discoveries (with a few exceptions) and thin, slow project pipelines have become rules of thumb in the copper mining industry. To those issues, the report adds copper miners’ habit of high-grading (mining your best quality ore first) and growing your reserves with a simple ploy – lowering cut-off grades when prices rise. Even with prices well above $10,000 a tonne, these paper reserves cannot keep growing, according to Goehring & Rozencwajg, specifically at porphyry deposits which produce 80% of the world’s copper. The authors have calculated an industry average cut-off grade of 0.25%, down from 0.4% in the mid-2000s when the firm first started tracking producers’ reserve calculations at 115 mines across the globe responsible for four-fifths of total output. “The copper industry’s ability to increase its reserve base by lowering its cut-off grade is nearing an end, regardless of how high copper prices go. It is a complicated but very important subject based on how copper porphyry deposits are geologically formed. “Lowering the cut-off grade clearly cannot go on indefinitely; unlike interest rates there is a firm low at zero. More important, the log-normal shape of the grade-tonnage plot means that most of the reserves have likely already been added. “Most reserves are located on the right side of the mean where the grade-tonnage curve has a long tail. On the left hand side of the mean, the log-normal distribution shows that the grade-tonnage curve has a very short tail with far few reserves.”
