Tesla Growth Is the Key to Panasonic Battery Business Profitability in 2021 Panasonic said it expects its battery business supplying Tesla to be profitable in fiscal 2021. As a result, the company raised its full-year operating profit forecast by more than half. After making profits over the past four quarters and Tesla's announcements that they will be in dire need of battery cells, Panasonic is increasingly confident that its 10-year partnership with the California-based manufacturer is becoming very profitable. “From the next business year we want to end the question of whether (the Tesla) business will be profitable or not,” Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda said on a call. In the previous quarter, Panasonic reported a 30% increase in operating profit to ¥ 130.2 billion, Reuters reports. Tesla intends to produce 20 million vehicles per year. The company is trying to ramp up car production as quickly as possible. The main limiting factor for this is the production of battery cells. Therefore, Elon Musk called on all Tesla battery suppliers, including Panasonic, to increase the number of cells produced. During the Q4 2020 Earnings Call, Tesla's CEO also said that the reason the company started its own battery cell manufacturing is to accelerate growth. "So - but the reason Tesla is doing its own cell production is in order to accelerate the growth. It is not to make less use of our cell suppliers. In fact, I want to be really clear, Tesla wants to increase purchases from cell suppliers. And we've been very clear with our cell suppliers, whether it be CATL or Panasonic or LG that we will take as many batteries as they can produce." This is an inspiring message to Tesla battery suppliers who can be confident that the company will bring them high profits. In September 2020, Panasonic began retooling its Nevada plant and adding a 14th production line, which will increase the factory capacity by 10% to 39-gigawatt hours per year. In addition, the company announced in October that it was developing a new battery cell developed by Tesla. Panasonic plans to begin test production of the new line for Tesla 4680 batteries starting April 1, 2021, Umeda said.www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blo...

Tesla Domination Continues, as 80% of EVs Registered in the US in 2020 Were Teslas Tesla continues to dominate and remains the most popular electric vehicle in the world, selling 499,550 vehicles in 2020. The US is showing very high interest in the California-based manufacturer's cars, as 8 out of 10 electric vehicles registered in the country last year were Tesla. Tesla accounted for 79% of electric vehicle registrations in the United States last year, according to new data from Experian. In 2020, 200,561 vehicles were registered in the country, which is 16 percent more than in 2019. All four Tesla models have made it to the Top 5 best-selling EVs list. The only one in the vicinity of Tesla model sales was the small Chevrolet Bolt hatchback, which came in third with 19,664 registrations. However, the Bolt still lagged well behind the #1 Tesla Model 3 with 95,135 registrations, and also behind the #2 Tesla Model Y crossover with 71,344 registered units. It is worth noting that Model Y has been on the market for less than 10 months, which further emphasizes the success of the model. Tesla Model X and Model S round out the Top 5 with 19,652 and 14,430 respective registrations. Tesla's registrations increased even though the manufacturer's cars were not eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit for buyers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Meanwhile, the Nissan Leaf, which is eligible for this tax credit, came in 6th in 2020, registering just 8,972, down nearly 28 percent from a year earlier.www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blo...
Ark Invest Continues Buying TSLA Shares As Tesla Autonomy & Ride-Sharing Inspire Confidence The confidence of ARK Invest in Tesla continues to grow due to new research carried out by the firm. Ride-sharing is a far more lucrative business than electric cars, and the manufacturer's 30 billion miles of real-world driving data will help Tesla achieve fully autonomous driving before anyone else, says Cathie Wood. Ark Invest's Cathie Wood told CNBC's ETF Edge that her firm continues buying Tesla shares. The firm's research shows that ride-sharing can be a big and profitable business for the manufacturer. The launch of this service will be a very good bridge to Tesla's autonomous strategy. “Our confidence in Tesla has grown as we’ve done research on what ride sharing potentially could add. It could limit the risks significantly, it’s a much more profitable business than electric vehicles,” said Wood. “Even though there is some debate at Tesla whether or not they should launch a human-driven ride-hailing network, it would be a very good bridge we think to their autonomous strategy and we think they will decide to do that.” Tesla also has a huge advantage in achieving full self-driving, because the company has already collected 30 billion miles of real data of the highest quality, and no one can compete with it. “As time goes on and we learn about their artificial intelligence expertise, the 30 billion miles they have collected of real-world driving data, no one comes close not even, I think Google might be at 30 million, compared to 30 billion and we know that in the AI ??world and autonomous is AI that the company with the most data and the best quality data will win,” Wood added.
