www.iex.nl/Forum/Topic/1278301/Energi...
thyssenkrupp Expands Production Capacities for Water Electrolysis Portfolio covers entire value chains for green chemicals, from hydrogen production to sustainable manufacture of ammonia, methanol, synthetic natural gas and fertilizers. Green hydrogen is gaining in importance worldwide as an energy carrier and CO2-free feedstock for the chemical industry. As a result, demand is rising for industrial electrolysis plants that can produce green hydrogen cost-efficiently. thyssenkrupp has significantly expanded its manufacturing capacities for such electrolysis plants and can now per year produce electrolysis cells with a total power consumption of up to one gigawatt, together with its strategic supplier and joint venture partner De Nora. These production capacities will be extended continuously in the future. Green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis using renewable electricity, is essential for a successful energy transition and for meeting international climate targets. Hydrogen is not only a clean energy carrier and fuel; it is also a CO2-neutral feedstock for the production of green chemicals. As a specialist in the engineering and construction of chemical plants, thyssenkrupp can already realize entire value chains, from the large-scale production of hydrogen to the subsequent manufacture of sustainable base chemicals such as ammonia and methanol. In corresponding industrial processes this makes it possible to dispense with fossil raw materials and reduce CO2 emissions directly at source. To simplify the construction of new hydrogen plants and keep costs down, thyssenkrupp offers its electrolyzers in prefabricated skid-mounted modules. One module produces 4,000 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour. The units are easy to transport and install and can be combined to realize projects of several hundred megawatts or gigawatts. Due to their high reaction speed, the plants can be operated flexibly; for the production of green hydrogen for industrial power-to-x applications as well as for grid stabilization. The patented design of the electrolysis cells, equipped with proprietary anodic and cathodic coatings developed by De Nora, allows high system efficiencies of up to 80 percent. It is based on leading electrolysis technologies from thyssenkrupp. So far, more than 600 projects and electrochemical plants worldwide with a total rating of over 10 gigawatts have been realized by the company. Iberdrola & Fertiberia Launch Plant for Producing Green Hydrogen for Industrial Use in Europe Iberdrola and Fertiberia are allied in their commitment to the sustainability of the industrial sector. The companies have signed an agreement, which will trigger an investment of 150 million euros, to construct the largest plant to produce green hydrogen for industrial use in Europe. The Spanish companies are to build the plant in Puertollano and it will be operational in 2021. Iberdrola will be responsible for the production of green hydrogen from 100 % renewable sources. The solution will consist of a 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant, a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and one of the largest electrolytic hydrogen production systems in the world. The green hydrogen produced will be used at Fertiberia's ammonia plant in Puertollano. This plant is already one of the most efficient in the European Union, with a production capacity of more than 200,000 tonnes per year. Fertiberia will update and modify the plant to be able to use the green hydrogen produced to manufacture green fertilizers. Fertiberia will be able to reduce natural gas requirements at the plant by over 10 % and will be the first European company in the sector to develop expertise in large-scale green ammonia generation. The project will take place in the municipality of Puertollano, in Ciudad Real, a prime location with a large industrial hub near to the National Hydrogen Centre, which has advised from the very beginning of the project. Its development and construction will generate 700 jobs and, once operational, will avoid 39,000 the emission of tCO2/year. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE
RWE Joins New European Clean Hydrogen Alliance RWE supports the newly launched European Clean Hydrogen Alliance ECH2A. The organisation has ambitious aims on the deployment of hydrogen technologies by 2030; bringing together renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, demand in industry, mobility and other sectors, as well as hydrogen transmission and distribution. These objectives fit perfectly with RWE's view of hydrogen as one of the great hopes for the decarbonisation of industry. For this reason, the company will be involved in the alliance, which was established by the EU Commission. The company announced to have joined the alliance. RWE is convinced of the role hydrogen can have in the energy transition. RWE also sees opportunities for the use of hydrogen within its operations, largely due to its large portfolio of renewable generation globally which is key in the production of hydrogen. In addition the company has both the experience and the knowledge to produce H2 as well as the capability to store H2 in gas storage, which belongs to the company. With the alliance, the EU wants to build its global leadership in hydrogen to support the EU’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Siemens Energy Launches Green Hydrogen Production Project in China Siemens Energy and Beijing Green Hydrogen Technology Development Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China Power International Development Ltd, signed an agreement on providing a hydrogen production system for a hydrogen fueling station. Located in Yanqing District, Beijing, one of the three main competition areas for a major sporting event in 2022, the green hydrogen production solution provided by Siemens Energy will help guarantee the hydrogen supply for the public transportation during and after the event. The megawatt green hydrogen production solution is the first of its kind to be built by Siemens Energy in China. The project is expected to be delivered in May 2021. In September 2019, Siemens signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in green hydrogen development and comprehensive utilization with State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC), which is the ultimate controlling shareholder of China Power. The hydrogen production project is the result of a close partnership between the two companies. The two sides also plan to further expand their cooperation on green hydrogen projects. Electrolyzers use electricity to split water into its components oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen produced only in this way is called green if the electricity used comes exclusively from a renewable source, i.e. from wind farms, solar plants, hydro or geothermal power plants. As the core equipment of the hydrogen integrated energy station, Siemens Energy’s PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer system Silyzer 200 can produce high-quality hydrogen at industrial scale. In addition, the hydrogen production system responds quickly, the start-up time under pressure is less than one minute, and it can be directly coupled with renewable energy. In order to meet customer needs of saving space and being flexible, Siemens Energy has adapted its hydrogen production system into a customized solution, which is also its first skid-mounted megawatt green hydrogen production system in China. Hydrogen Based Steel Production via BF Starts at Dillinger Germany’s first hydrogen-based steel production plant via the blast furnace route is beginning operation in Dillingen. With the EUR 14 million investments, Dillinger and Saarstahl are further cutting their carbon emissions while also creating the conditions for practical use of green hydrogen. The new plant in Dillingen is the first in Germany that uses hydrogen as a reducing agent in the blast furnace in normal operation. This is accomplished by injecting hydrogen-rich coke gas. Saarstahl and Dillinger Chairman Tim Hartmann said “We are ready for the transformation to green steel. This investment confirms: Saarstahl and Dillinger are ready to take the next big steps on the way to producing green steel.” The use of hydrogen in steel production is a key factor in reducing carbon emissions. The coke gas injection system is an important step toward producing green steel and minimizing the use of resources. Carbon emissions from the blast furnace can be reduced by replacing the carbon in the blast furnace with hydrogen as a reducing agent and energy source. This means conditions are now in place for future operation of the blast furnaces, as far as technically possible, with green hydrogen. The precondition for this as well as for the complete conversion of our steel production to hydrogen based then on other technologies like electric furnaces and hydrogen-based direct reduction plants is the future availability in Saarland of green hydrogen in sufficient quantities and at competitive conditions. Independent of this, the companies are pushing ahead with further major energy efficiency projects and making sustained investments in the optimization of existing plants. Dillinger and Saarstahl, for example, have made environment-related investments totalling EUR 70 million in the last two years. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE
E.ON is a Member of European Clean Hydrogen Alliance At the beginning of July, the European Union presented its hydrogen strategy. The aim is to support the achievement of climate targets by expanding the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier and to promote the development of a European hydrogen economy. At the same time, the "European Clean Hydrogen Alliance" was formed, which E.ON has now joined. The alliance, which currently comprises around 200 companies and other organizations, is committed to expanding and implementing hydrogen technologies by 2030. Other goals include promoting demand for low-carbon hydrogen from sectors such as industry and mobility and bringing together hydrogen transmission and distribution. In order to achieve these goals, the Alliance brings together politics, industry and society and thus provides the EU Commission with its expertise to advise it on the implementation of its hydrogen strategy. E.ON was quick to explore the potential uses of hydrogen and can therefore also make a valuable contribution to the European Alliance for Clean Hydrogen. For example, the "Green Gas from Green Power" initiative, which E.ON launched last year, now includes numerous hydrogen projects across the group with different focuses and at different stages. One example is the "Smart Quart" project, in which E.ON is building a hydrogen network in a community in Rhineland-Palatinate. Initially, green electricity will be converted into hydrogen using power-to-gas technology. This is then fed into a microgrid and can be used to supply local buses or to generate heat. E.ON is also committed to ensuring that the development of a hydrogen economy gets off to a swift start, for example with a green gas quota or similar mechanisms that make investments possible. For example, E.ON is making its gas distribution networks “h2-ready” for hydrogen by 2030. The Hydrogen Council has been chaired by Katherina Reiche, head of the E.ON subsidiary Westenergie, since the beginning of July this year. The council consists of 25 high-ranking experts from industry, science and civil society and will contribute to the implementation and further development of the German government's hydrogen strategy.
TNG Limited & SMS Group to Produce Turquoise Hydrogen for Pre Reduction of Titanomagnetite Ores Perth based Australian mining corporation TNG Limited and SMS group plan to implement a process enabling the production of CO2 neutral hydrogen as they are developing the Mt Peake Titanium Vanadium Iron Project in the Northern Territory in Australia. The thus produced turquoise hydrogen will be used as reducing agent to make the production from fine-grained titanomagnetite concentrate carbon-neutral. TNG Limited and SMS group have now agreed to jointly invest in the development of a complementary hydrogen production technology. On account of the limited availability of green electricity, both companies bank on the production of hydrogen by breaking methane, natural gas or biomethane, down into hydrogen and solid carbon. This process requires just about one third of the electricity consumed by other green hydrogen production routes. The electricity consumption of the new process envisaged by TNG and SMS group is rated at 15 to 18 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen produced. TNG and SMS group plan to construct and bring on stream a Europe-based pilot plant with a hydrogen production capacity of 14 kilograms per hour in the next few years. This will correspond to about 100 tons of carbon-neutral hydrogen per year, a capacity set to enable the scale-up of the technology to an industrial level. The process has the potential to become the method of choice for the production of hydrogen and syngas from a wide range of hydrocarbons, including fossil, biogenic and waste materials. For TNG and SMS group, this opens up, outside their respective core businesses, new business opportunities in the fast-growing hydrogen and e-fuel sector. The process produces carbon black as a by-product. The current market price of a ton of carbon black is about 1,000 US dollar. TNG Limited and SMS group have already been working closely with leading institutes and partners from industry with the aim to jointly develop an efficient direct pre-reduction process, on fluidized bed basis, for TNG’s fine-grained titanomagnetite concentrate, and have meanwhile successfully demonstrated the feasibility of the process at lab scale. De handel is altijd business to business.
