    LUXEMBURG (AFN) - Staalconcern ArcelorMittal heeft te maken gehad met een explosie in een hoogoven in het Amerikaanse Burns Harbor, Indiana. Dat meldt S&P Global Platts op basis van bronnen en video's.

    Wat er precies gebeurd is, is niet duidelijk. Ook is niets bekend over eventuele schade of slachtoffers. De onderneming was tegenover het medium niet direct bereikbaar voor commentaar.

    Eerder dit jaar besloot ArcelorMittal al om zijn enige andere hoogoven in de plaats tijdelijk stop te zetten. Volgens het aan de beurs in Amsterdam genoteerde bedrijf was dat nodig vanwege de coronacrisis. Daardoor is de vraag in de markt stevig teruggevallen.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Op Wall Street zijn donderdag vier van de negen AEX-genoteerde fondsen ten opzichte van het slot in Amsterdam lager gesloten, waaronder zwaargewichten ING en Shell die daarmee de index omlaag trokken.

    ArcelorMittal expects to meet demand despite Indiana mill fire

    An explosion occurred today at ArcelorMittal's (NYSE:MT) Burns Harbor, Ind., mill that damaged a blast furnace, but the company does not anticipate any impact on its ability to meet customer demand.

    Arcelor says the incident at the mill's D blast furnace, which has a steelmaking capacity of 2.48M mt/year, was caused by a stove dome failure, but no injuries occurred and the furnace was safely taken offline.

    In late April, the company took down the mill's only other blast furnace for maintenance, but it remains down due to depressed market conditions as a result of coronavirus-related demand disruptions.

    The April move resulted in furloughs for 63 Burns Harbor employees.

    ArcelorMittal USA experiences explosion at Indiana sheet mill

    Pittsburgh — ArcelorMittal USA had an explosion at its Burns Harbor, Indiana, mill on July 16, market sources and videos confirmed to S&P Global Platts.

    The explosion was understood to be at the mill's D blast furnace which has a rated annual capacity of 2.48 million mt, according to the Association for Iron and Steel Technology. ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor is located about 40 miles southeast of Chicago along Lake Michigan.
    An ArcelorMittal spokesman confirmed the incident which was caused by a stove dome failure and the furnace was safely taken offline. There were no injuries and the cause of the event remains under investigation, according to the spokesman. The steelmaker said it is "creating a timeline for repairs and the company does not anticipate any impact on our ability to meet customer demand."

    In late April the steelmaker took down the mill's only other blast furnace for maintenance but it was understood to still be down given depressed market conditions as a result of coronavirus-related demand disruptions.

    S&P Platts reported that ArcelorMittal is set to restart one of the two temporarily idled blast furnaces at its Dunkerque site in northern France in August. A spokesman said “ArcelorMittal plans to restart blast furnace No 3, which has a capacity of 3 million tonne peryear of crude steel, at some point in August, but the precise date has not been decided.”

    Dunkerque has three blast furnaces with combined annual capacity of 7 million tonnes, but only one is operational at the moment. The two largest blast furnaces, which have matching annual capacities, were temporarily shuttered in March and April due to the slump in demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic. ArcelorMittal idled No 1 blast furnace at Fos-sur-Mer on March 23 due to the pandemic. The site's No. 2 blast furnace was supposed to be idled in June, but this was postponed by a month.
