Vestas, Rabobank and Windpark Zeewolde partner up to build Netherland’s largest onshore wind project

Windpark Zeewolde BV, Vestas and Rabobank have closed contracts for wind turbines and financing for the Windpark Zeewolde project in the Netherlands. Windpark Zeewolde BV, a unique collaboration of more than 200 local farmers, residents and entrepreneurs of the Netherlands, has placed an order for 83 Vestas wind turbines totaling 322 MW for the wind project Zeewolde. The project is in the outskirts of Zeewolde, close to the IJsselmeer, on an area that covers over 300 square kilometers.

The wind park currently consists of more than 200 turbines which will be replaced by new Vestas turbines that will generate almost three times more energy with less than half the number of turbines, demonstrating the large potential in replacing older turbines with new and more efficient variants.

The financing of the windfarm will be arranged by Rabobank that will provide both the junior debt and a senior debt loan of approximately EUR 500 million for the construction of the project. Rabobank was keen to support the financing of this project, due to its cooperative structure comprising of a large client base of the bank in addition to supporting the energy transition.

Vestas has developed a customised solution that comprises a mix of turbine variants from the 2 MW and 4 MW platforms and a 20-year Active Output Management service contract, capable of maximising the annual energy production while meeting local restrictions.

The delivery of the wind turbines is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2021. The entire park will be completed in 2022, and it will be the largest onshore wind farm in the Netherlands and the largest community-owned windfarm in Europe.Once repowered, the Zeewolde wind project will generate electricity for more than 250.000 local households.

Jack-Up Vessel off Redcar Coast for Sofia Offshore Wind Farm

Innogy announced that a 29 metre long jack-up vessel will be at work in the nearshore area between Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea from this week to conclude a six-month offshore site investigation by service provider Fugro for Sofia Offshore Wind Farm. The jack-up vessel Haven Seariser 2 will be visible to local residents and coast visitors for approximately a month while it carries out a series of boreholes. The boreholes together with earlier surveys will gather data that will feed into the planning of the final design and installation methodology for the main transmission cable where it reaches landfall. As well as the towing vessel, the jack-up will be supported by a local guard vessel and a rigid inflatable boat to allow crew changes.

The vessel has four legs that will be lowered to the seabed, enabling it to lift up above the water and create a steady platform for each borehole to be safely carried out. It will be towed between borehole sites by a towing vessel and is due to leave the area by the end of July.

Sofia, the largest project in innogy’s development portfolio and one of the world’s biggest offshore wind farms, will be located on Dogger Bank, in the North Sea. The power generated by the wind farm will travel via a 220 kilometre long electricity export cable from the offshore converter platform to shore, at its landfall between Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea.

From landfall, onshore cables will transport the power to a new onshore converter station to be built near the village of Lazenby, adjacent to the Wilton Complex. Construction is due to start onshore in early 2021.

Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is 100% owned by innogy SE

Siemens Gamesa to Shut Down Factory in Aoiz in Navarre

Siemens Gamesa needs to adapt to the challenging market conditions of the wind industry, characterized by strong competition and price pressures that have deteriorated the margins of wind turbine manufacturers. To succeed in that environment and increase the competitiveness of its onshore business, the company will focus on the next generation of large turbines, with rotors of up to 170 meters. These models already represent almost half of the current demand and are crucial to increase its profitability and bring further down the cost of clean energy.

To successfully advance that strategy, Siemens Gamesa has decided to shut down its Aoiz factory, which is not competitive in the market environment to produce blades for large turbine models. The Navarre plant manufactures the SG 3.4-132 for projects located primarily in Spain. Its higher costs and geographical position, more than 200 km away from the closest port, make it uncompetitive for global markets.

The company will start a collective dismissal procedure for a maximum of 239 employees. Negotiations with local workers council are intended to start in the coming days, in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. Information on the final agreements will be communicated once negotiations are completed.

While this activity is not directly linked to the COVID-19 crisis, the effects of the pandemic in Siemens Gamesa operations and commercial activity have accentuated the need for action. The company reported a direct impact of 56 million euros in its profitability during the last quarter.

RWE Chooses GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions & Sembcorp Marine for Sofia Offshore Wind Farm Electrical Transmission System

RWE has moved a step closer to the realisation of its 1.4 gigawatt Sofia Offshore Wind Farm with the selection of the preferred suppliers for the project’s high voltage direct current transmission system. A specially formed consortium of GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions and Sembcorp Marine is set to supply the state-of-the-art system for Sofia, one of the world’s largest offshore wind farm projects, located on Dogger Bank, the shallow area of the central North Sea, 195 kilometres from the UK coast’s nearest point. As the consortium leader, GE’s Grid Solutions will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of two HVDC converter stations capable of transmitting 1,400 megawatts of power at 320 kilovolts. Innovative converter modules and a new high-tech control system have been deployed for Sofia. It will be the most powerful offshore converter station ever fabricated and will be installed at a point 220 kilometres from shore, so will also be the most remote.

The offshore converter platform will be built and installed by Sembcorp Marine. At the heart of the wind farm, it will comprise 10,000 tonnes topside attached to a jacket foundation piled into the seabed. The onshore converter station will convert the electricity generated by the wind farm to 400 kV, before it enters the national grid.

GE’s Grid Solutions and Sembcorp Marine are starting early design works in July, with the full contract subject to the project’s final investment decision, due in the first quarter of 2021. The HVDC transmission system represents Sofia’s second largest contract and will include the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the offshore converter platform and the onshore converter station, including all ancillary equipment.

Construction of the wind farm is due to begin onshore at its Teesside converter station site early next year, with offshore construction expected to get underway in 2023. The HVDC transmission system news follows the announcement that Sofia has signed a preferred supplier agreement with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for 100 of its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines, a 14MW design that is 25 percent more powerful than its next largest model.

With an installed capacity of more than 9.5 GW RWE is UK's second largest generator of electricity. Via its subsidiary, RWE Renewables, the company has significant experience in the British offshore market with nine wind farms in operation off the UK coast and Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm 857 MW currently under construction. Further offshore development projects, like Sofia, 100% owned by RWE, underline the growth ambitions of the company in this country.

ENGIE and EDP Renováveis have announced the creation of Ocean Winds, a joint venture equally controlled by both companies in the floating and fixed offshore wind energy sector. The new company will act as the exclusive investment vehicle to capture marine wind energy opportunities around the world and will become one of the top five offshore global operators by combining the industrial and development capacity of both parent companies.

Spyros Martinis, CEO of OW, explained: “OW has been created with the intention of combining the experience and knowledge of two companies with a successful track record in the generation of renewable energy under one single firm, in order to take a leading position in the marine wind sector. We share a vision for the key role of renewables in general, and offshore in particular, in the new energy model. The creation of a company combining the experience and resources of both will give us the chance to lead a sector in this increasingly real and necessary transition.”

Grzegorz Gorski, COO of OW, added: “We are continuously monitoring the evolution and regulation of multiple countries. We are seeking not just to grow in the markets where we are already present, but also to explore opportunities to add value in new countries.”

OW has over 200 employees and expects to reach 300 towards the end of the year. This remarkable human team will represent over fifteen different nationalities, including highly qualified staff, almost a third of them women and 99% with fixed employment contracts.

The first brand created using the sound of the wind on the high seas

The origin of the OW brand is no coincidence. When ENGIE and EDPR were looking for a name for the new business they brought in a team of scientists who could help to identify the sound of the wind in the Roman alphabet. They developed a specific algorithm and equipment to transcribe into letters the sound of the wind recorded offshore over a 48-hour period. The two most commonly occurring letters were “O” and “W”, thus giving rise to the name Ocean Winds. You can find out more about OW’s brand creation process in this video:

Ocean Winds is born, the new company specialized in offshore wind power called to become a global leader.
