JDE Peets als nieuwe DE emissie 29mei vrijdag
Volgen
Het is even koffiedik kijken.
CONSUMER Peet’s Coffee Parent Goes Public Just as More People Caffeinate From Home By Evie Liu June 1, 2020 3:14 pm ET Order Reprints Print Article Text size The company generates more than three quarters of its revenue from packaged consumer products. Photograph by David Paul Morris/Bloomberg European coffee brand JDE Peet’s, which owns the Peet’s Coffee chain in the U.S., has raised €2.25 billion ($2.5 billion) in an initial public offering in Amsterdam, just 10 days after it announced its intentions. The lightning-speed listing—the second-largest of the year worldwide—signifies strong appetite from institutional investors and injected some optimism into the depressed IPO market amid the uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The stock (ticker: JDEP.Netherlands) ended trading Monday at €37.25 a share, up 18% from Friday’s IPO price of €31.50. The company generates more than three quarters of its revenue from packaged consumer products—that is, coffee consumed at home rather than in cafes. The segment is expected to see strong growth as millions of people remain at home amid the pandemic and the return of office workers might not occur soon. They will still need caffeine to energize the long work days. In 2019, JDE Peet’s generated €6.9 billion in sales and €1.6 billion in adjusted earnings. Growth has been relatively flat over the past two years, but that is partly attributable to weak pricing on the back of declining costs of the green coffee beans, Bernstein analyst Alexia Howard wrote in a Monday note. The futures market now suggests a moderate increase in green-coffee costs going into 2021. Over the long term, Peet’s expects to see organic sales growth of 3% to 5% and earnings growth of 5% to 8%. While Peet’s coffeehouse presence is small compared with Starbucks (SBUX), the company is well-positioned in the consumer packaged-coffee market. Swiss food giant Nestle (NSRGY), which paid $7.2 billion in 2018 to sell packaged Starbucks coffee and tea, remains the top player worldwide, but Peet’s ranks second in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, Howard noted, and third in Latin America. It has a smaller presence in North America, Asia, and Middle East & Africa. There is particular growth opportunity in China, where the market is fragmented and less-saturated. Starbucks is dominant but its market share is less than 40%, according to Howard, compared with 70% in the U.S. Chinese rival Luckin Coffee (LK) has thousands of stores and posted strong growth over the past few years, but it has been struggling with accounting scandals and a potential Nasdaq-delisting. All this suggests there is room for JDE Peet’s. The company plans to drive more online sales in China and open 150 more coffee stores in major cities by 2024. It has 13 stores in China now; Starbucks and Luckin have more than 4,000 each. Investors can directly buy shares of the Amsterdam-based company, or bet on the coffee brand’s future through its American stakeholder, Chicago-based snacking giant Mondelez (MDLZ). In the IPO, Mondelez sold nearly 10 million of its shares—worth about €300 million—in the secondary market. Acorn Holdings, controlled by German private investor JAB, sold €1.25 billion worth of shares. There were €700 million of newly issued shares. Mondelez’ stake in JDE Peet’s shrank to 23.4% from 26.5%. It also has a 13% stake in Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP), another major player in the coffee market. Howard estimates that Mondelez’ stake in those two companies, combined with the proceeds from the Peet’s shares its sold, could be worth $10 billion, or $7 per share, on a pre-tax basis. Mondelez’s management said it isn’t planning to exit its coffee stakes in the near-term. If the company were to sell its stakes in the coffee joint-ventures, however, it could free up about $8.9 billion in cash, or $6.2 per share post tax, estimates Howard. Trading at 17.3 times enterprise value to forward earnings, Mondelez stock might appear relatively expensive. But that is partly because the income from its coffee joint ventures isn’t reflected in the books, Howard noted. If excluding the $10 billion pre-tax value of the joint ventures, the company is priced at 15.6 times enterprise value to forward earnings, which appears more attractive than Hershey’s (HSY)’s 16 times and McCormick’s (MKC) 22 times. JDE Peet’s stock is trading at about a 14.5 multiple, according to Howard. Write to Evie Liu at evie.liu@barrons.com
