Trump is losing the support of the United States’ closest ally after the president slammed down the phone on them during an ‘apoplectic’ (beroerteachtig) call Donald Trump is close to losing the support of the United States’ closest ally after a growing series of public rows. The president reportedly slammed down the phone on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson during what officials described as an “apoplectic” call. In recent weeks Johnson and senior members of his government have staged repeated public criticisms of Trump and his administration. Johnson has accused Trump of “failing to lead” and “letting the air out of the tires of the world economy.” Johnson says Trump is ‘failing to lead’ and ‘letting the air out of the tires of the world economy’ Johnson calls Trump’s Iran attack “dangerous” and warns him against committing a war crime Trump accused (by Johnson) of withdrawing ‘from its leadership around the world’www.businessinsider.nl/donald-trump-a...
Britain's Department of Health and Social Care declared the coronavirus outbreak a "serious and imminent threat" to public health on Monday, increasing its powers to keep people quarantined but stressing that the overall risk level to the British public remained "moderate." "The risk to the public has not changed," the department announced on Twitter. "This is a legal term which we announced this morning as part of changes to make it easier for health professionals to do their job."www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-uk-h...
Finance Minister Sajid Javid opgestapt. Today Boris Johnson replaced his finance minister Sajid Javid – the second most important man in government – with someone far more junior. It definitely means he's centralizing power. But does it mean more public spending is on the way too?twitter.com/TIME Javid was reportedly told to sack his entire team of advisors to keep his job. Instead, he chose to resign. Javid’s resignation could mean more power concentrated in the hands of the Prime Minister. To replace him, Johnson appointed an inexperienced minister, Rishi Sunak, as Chancellor of the Exchequer (the formal title for Britain’s finance minister) on Thursday. And the U.K. Treasury’s advisory team is now reportedly set to be merged with one in the Prime Minister’s office, 10 Downing Street, a potentially long-lasting shift in the way Britain is governed.time.com/5783576/sajid-javid-resigns-... Ladies & Gentlemen. I present to you our new Attorney General... The government's chief law officer had made clear in a speech on Wednesday that he wanted to hold on to the post, and said after his dismissal that he was 'leaving the government at the prime minister's request'. Cox, who spoke at the launch of Mr Johnson's bid for the Tory leadership last year, is understood to have fallen foul of the prime minister because of his insistence on speaking out independently in cabinet. In a letter of resignation - which he made clear he had made at Mr Johnson's request - the outgoing attorney appeared to allude to this by referring to his efforts to deliver "candid and independent" advice to the PM and his predecessor Theresa May.

"Bank of England projects worst UK economic slump since 1706"twitter.com/EddyElfenbein/status/1258... In its “illustrative scenario” for the economic outlook, the Bank said it expects U.K. gross domestic product to fall by 14% over 2020 as a whole, driven by a 25% decline in the second quarter. Given the assumed relaxation of social distancing measures, however, the BOE expects the fall in GDP to be temporary and followed by a rapid recovery. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the BOE has cut rates twice from 0.75% to 0.1% and announced £200 billion ($247.55 billion) of new quantitative easing, bringing its bond buying program to a total of £645 billion.www.cnbc.com/2020/05/07/bank-of-engla...

The unequivocal defence has stunned even Johnson's own alliestwitter.com/chrizap/status/1264666274... 'He acted legally and with integrity': Johnson straps himself to embattled aide Cummings May 25, 2020 — 3.45am London: Boris Johnson is defying demands from his own MPs to sack Downing Street's most powerful adviser, insisting Dominic Cummings will not be pushed out despite damaging allegations that the polarising staffer breached Britain's lockdown laws. In his first public comments since the scandal exploded on Friday, the Prime Minister said Cummings acted "responsibly, legally and with integrity" in driving 400 kilometres from London to Durham in northern England even though he and his wife had coronavirus. Cummings claims the journey in late March was appropriate because he was worried about the welfare of his young son and wanted to be near his elderly parents and sister. However new claims have emerged that Cummings was also spotted visiting a small town south-west of Durham in early April – something a visibly agitated Johnson refused to deny on Sunday. The Prime Minister also dodged questions about what he knew of the trip before it was revealed through a joint investigation by The Guardian and Daily Mirror newspapers. Furious Tory MPs publicly called on Cummings to resign or be fired on the basis the saga has undermined public confidence in strict social distancing rules and distracted Downing Street from managing the coronavirus outbreak, which has so far killed at least 37,000 people in the United Kingdom. But in a testy exchange with reporters on Sunday, Johnson said Cummings had followed his "instincts" and would keep his job. "I want to begin by answering the big question that people have been asking in the last 48 hours: is this government asking you, the people, the public, to do one thing while senior people here in government do something else?" Johnson said. "I take this matter so seriously and, frankly, it is so serious that I can tell you today I've had extensive face-to-face conversations with Dominic Cummings. "And I conclude that in travelling to find the right kind of childcare at the moment when both he and his wife were about to be incapacitated by coronavirus and when he had no alternative, I think he followed the instincts of every father and parent, and I do not mark him down for that. "I believe in every respect he has acted responsibly, legally and with integrity." The unequivocal defence has stunned even Johnson's own allies. Some had expected the Prime Minister might try to take the heat out of the affair by announcing an inquiry into Cummings' behaviour. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the Cabinet Office should launch an inquiry, but stopped short of demanding Cummings resign or be sacked. "This was a test of the Prime Minister and he has failed it. It is an insult to sacrifices made by the British people that Boris Johnson has chosen to take no action against Dominic Cummings," he said. "The public will be forgiven for thinking there is one rule for the Prime Minister’s closest adviser and another for the British people." Cummings is the co-architect of Johnson's rise to power and was a key figure in the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union. He wields huge influence over Downing Street and has irritated senior cabinet ministers who believe he has too much power for an unelected official. Eight backbench MPs went public on Sunday to criticise Cummings and urge him to resign. "Today’s newspapers are a disaster," said former Conservative minister Steve Baker. "Enormous political capital is being expended saving someone who has boasted of making decisions beyond his competence and who clearly broke at the very least the guidance which kept mums and dads at home, without childcare from their parents, and instead risked spreading the virus by travelling." Johnson's wife, journalist Mary Wakefield, had coronavirus symptoms when the couple drove to Durham in late March, but Cummings did not. However, he developed symptoms within days and was bedridden for more than a week. It is not known whether the couple stopped for petrol. The rules at the time said anyone with symptoms must not leave their home under any circumstances and should not visit family members for any reason. A witness has claimed they also saw Cummings at Barnard Castle, a small market town about 40 kilometres from his parents' home in Durham. Johnson was asked about this claim on Sunday but did not answer the question. He also hit out at false reporting about the Cummings matter but did not identify what was actually false. A senior member of the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, Professor Neil Ferguson, resigned earlier this month after he was caught breaking the lockdown rules to meet a woman he was in a relationship with.www.smh.com.au/world/europe/he-acted-...
Extraordinary: Boris Johnson scrapped the cabinet pandemic team six months before coronavirus hit UK to focus on Brexit.twitter.com/Simon_Nixon/status/127169... Revealed: Boris Johnson scrapped Cabinet ministers' pandemic team six months before coronavirus hit Britain The PM abolished the Threats, Hazards, Resilience and Contingency Committee MPs such as Michael Gove and Matt Hancock were part of the pandemic team The group was scrapped by Mr Johnson just days after he entered No10 last July COVID-19 hit the UK six months later - and has claimed 41,841 lives so far Boris Johnson scrapped a team of Cabinet ministers tasked with protecting the UK from a pandemic six months before coronavirus arrived, a Mail investigation has found. The Government’s ‘anti-pandemic committee’, which included senior ministers Michael Gove, Matt Hancock and Gavin Williamson, was disbanded without discussing virus control plans. The group, officially known as the Threats, Hazards, Resilience and Contingency Committee (THRCC), was supposed to ensure the UK was ready to cope with a pandemic. But it was mothballed by former prime minister Theresa May on the advice of Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill so ministers and officials could focus on Brexit. It was abolished by Mr Johnson days after he entered No10 last July as part of a vow to streamline Whitehall. Six months later Covid-19 arrived. Experts claim the Prime Minister’s delay in ordering a lockdown is partly why the UK’s death toll is so high. Last night, a former Cabinet minister who was a member of THRCC until it was axed said it could have ensured the Government reacted more quickly to coronavirus, adding: ‘Once the pandemic took hold in Italy... alarm bells would have been ringingwww.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8416...
