Ballard Announces Order from Solaris for 25 Fuel Cell Modules to Power Buses in Germanyfinance.yahoo.com/news/ballard-announ...

Alstom Hydrogen Train Coradia iLint Completes Tests in Netherlands Alstom has performed ten days of tests of the Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell train on the 65 kilometres of line between Groningen and Leeuwarden in the north of the Netherlands. The tests follow 18 successful months of passenger service on the Buxtehude–Bremervörde–Bremerhaven–Cuxhaven line in Germany, where total of 41 Coradia iLint have already been ordered. The latest tests make the Netherlands the second country in Europe where the train has proven itself a unique emissions-free solution for non-electrified lines. Last October, Alstom and the Province of Groningen, local operator Arriva, the Dutch railway infrastructure manager ProRail and the energy company Engie signed a pilot project agreement to test the Coradia iLint, the world’s first passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells, in the Netherlands. DEKRA, an independent testing inspection and certification company, has been appointed test leader. This series of tests is being performed at night at up to 140 km/h without passengers. For the purpose of the tests, a mobile filling station has been erected by Engie for refuelling the Coradia iLint with completely green – sustainably produced – hydrogen. The Coradia iLint is the world's first regional passenger train to enter service equipped with fuel cells to convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, thus eliminating pollutant emissions related to propulsion. The completely train is quiet, and its only emission is water. Purpose-built for use on non-electrified lines, it provides clean, sustainable traction with no sacrifice in performance. It has a range of approximately 1000 kilometres – the same as equivalent-size diesel multiple units. The train is developed and produced by the Alstom teams in Salzgitter, Germany and Tarbes, France. ENGIE Refuels Hydrogen Passenger Train in Test in Netherlands ENGIE has successfully refueled a hydrogen passenger train in a pilot test in the Northern Netherlands that took place between February 27 and March 11. The testing of Coradia iLint, the world's first renewable hydrogen passenger train, is led by the Netherlands’ province of Groningen, and jointly conducted with Alstom, a French multinational in rail transport, Arriva, a local train operator, ProRail, a Dutch railway infrastructure agency, and DEKRA, an independent testing organization. The train is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electrical power for traction. It emits only water and steam during operation, representing a clean alternative for the regional government looking to replace diesel fleets on non-electrified lines and meet their zero carbon emission objectives. In the Netherlands, the rail network is about 1,000 km of non-electrified railway lines. Around 100 diesel trains are currently running on these lines daily. With the common goal to develop zero-carbon transport, this joint project aims to demonstrate that the hydrogen fuel cell is an ideal technology to achieve clean rail transport. The train tests without passengers were conducted on the 55-km railway between Leeuwarden and Groningen, at up to 140 km per hour. During the test, ENGIE supplied renewable hydrogen and operated the mobile refueling station. Energystock, affiliate of Gasunie, a gas transport and storage infrastructure company, provided their conversion services to make renewable hydrogen available. ENGIE successfully refueled the train six times. The pilot test is the first step to scaling up. Hydrogen trains could be introduced in the Netherlands as early as 2024. ENGIE and Alstom will continue to collaborate to develop renewable hydrogen trains in the Netherlands. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Bus with PowerCell S2 in daily operations in China has run the equivalent of one lap around the globe A bus equipped with PowerCell S2 fuel cell stacks used in daily operations in China, has up until the end of January this year, covered 40,000 kilometers, the equivalent of one lap around the globe. The bus is one of several that has been equipped with PowerCell S2 fuel cell stacks by Wuhan Tiger and that are running in field tests in Wuhan in China. “This shows that our leading fuel cell technology really meets the requirements of use under real conditions, Yibo Zhao, President of PowerCell’s Chinese subsidiary PowerCell Fuel Cell Co Ltd. Wuhan Tiger Fuel Cell Company Ltd has been a customer to PowerCell since 2017. The company has the ambition to develop fuel cell powered vehicles for the Chinese market together with the Chinese vehicle manufacturer Skywell. Wuhan Tiger has developed a 40kW fuel cell system based on 2 PowerCell S2 fuel cell stacks. Over the last year, the system has been tested in buses running in daily traffic on two bus lines in Wuhan. One of the lines covers 12 kilometers with 16 stops. “Despite intensive use for a long time and under tough conditions, none of the stacks has experienced any problems whatsoever – the bus that has covered the longest distance so far has run 40,000 kilometers. It is a very strong proof that our products have the reliability and durability that the customers need and require”, Yibo Zhao, President of PowerCell Fuel Cell (Shanghai) Co Ltd. and Manager Sales Area Asia said. “Our buses equipped with PowerCell’s stacks have been working very well. Thanks to their reliability we have been able to demonstrate in a very tangible way that the fuel cell technology is a truly attractive alternative when phasing out fossil fuels from the automotive segment”, Wu Bo, Vice President at Wuhan Tiger said. Zero Emission Solution Fuel cells offer a zero-emission solution for an electrification of a vast range of applications, such as cars and buses. In comparison, an average city bus running 4,000 kilometers on diesel would have emitted approximately 6.8 tons of carbon dioxide and 184 kilos of NOx. With the ambition to decrease the emissions from the road traffic, China has introduced large subsidies for fuel cell vehicles. Since 2017 Wuhan Tiger has purchased a total of 54 S2 fuel cell stacks from PowerCell. In 2018 the company’s fuel cell bus was approved for production by the Chinese authorities.
PowerCell receives order for PowerCell S3 from Bosch at a total value of MSEK 11.5 PowerCell Sweden AB has received an order for PowerCell S3 fuel cell stacks from Bosch at a total value of approximately MSEK 11.5 (1,047,900 Euro). The order will have a positive financial impact during the first quarter 2020. framework of the joint development and licensing agreement. In April last year German Robert Bosch GmbH and PowerCell Sweden signed an agreement regarding the development, production and sale of the PowerCell S3 fuel cell stack for the automotive segment. The agreement includes a joint development of the S3 and a license whereby Bosch gets the exclusive right to produce and sell the new and improved version of PowerCell S3 for automotive applications such as cars, trucks and buses. Bosch has previously communicated the ambition to start their own production of PowerCell S3 in 2022 at the latest.
Toyota and Hino to Develop Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Truck Toyota Motor Corporation and Hino Motors Ltd have agreed to jointly develop a heavy-duty fuel cell truck, and to proceed with initiatives toward its practical use through verification tests and other means. For the electrification of commercial vehicles, the optimum powertrain must be adopted to ensure both outstanding environmental performance and just-right practicality as a business vehicle in terms of cruising range, load capacity, and other aspects depending on the usage. Heavy-duty trucks are typically used for highway transportation; therefore, they are required to have sufficient cruising range and load capacity as well as fast refueling capability. For this reason, fuel cell vehicles that run on hydrogen with its higher energy density are considered effective. The heavy-duty fuel cell truck in this joint development project is based on Hino Profia, and is being developed taking maximum advantage of the technologies both Toyota and Hino have cultivated over the years. The chassis is specially designed with the optimum packaging for a fuel cell vehicle, and steps are being taken through comprehensive weight reduction to ensure a sufficient load capacity. The powertrain is equipped with two Toyota fuel cell stacks that have been newly developed for Toyota's next Mirai and includes vehicle driving control that applies heavy-duty hybrid vehicle technologies, developed by Hino. Also, cruising range will be set at approximately 600 km, aiming to meet high standards in both environmental performance and practicality as a commercial vehicle. Toyota and Hino have positioned hydrogen as an important energy source for the future and have worked together on developing technologies and spreading and innovating fuel cell vehicles for over fifteen years since their joint demonstration trials of the fuel cell bus in 2003. Going forward, Toyota and Hino will further strengthen its partnership and accelerate efforts toward the realization of a hydrogen society. Source : Strategic Research Institute
