ABB’s Secures i Contract with CPO Containers chiffreederei

ABB secured its first contract for ABB Ability Tekomar XPERT for fleet of 55 vessels with Hamburg based ship manager CPO Container’s chiffreederei. CCPO offers high quality service to its charter clients and professional ship management for 111 of own and third-party ships. They were an early adopter of the smart engine performance diagnostics software, Tekomar XPERT, during its initial release in 2015. The latest Tekomar XPERT for fleet web application launched in June this year at CIMAC Congress and incorporates all standard features found in the original Tekomar XPERT application with the additional fleet functionality specifically developed to support management decisions.

Tekomar XPERT for fleet, features an easy-access web application interface, which provides accurate insight into engine performance from fleet to vessel level through key performance indicators (KPIs) such as engine health, optimization potential and fleet performance benchmarking. These KPIs provide a helicopter view of engine performance across an entire fleet regardless of engine make, type and age. Ships and fleets are listed according to current performance and provide the technical management with an immediate indication on their status.

Poor performing vessels are less cost effective and emit more pollutants into the atmosphere than necessary. Tekomar XPERT for fleet, identifies the necessary adjustments required to reach optimum engine performance and efficiency at a fleet wide level, creating both fuel and emissions savings.

Christoph Gessner, Managing Director, CCPO, said that “We are always looking to adopt the latest technological advances to minimize our environmental footprint; this is a key driver for us when procuring services and products. With Tekomar XPERT for fleet, through optimizing our engine health, we can minimize costs and the environmental footprint, and in return we can pass on these benefits to our customers.”

ABB Azipod Propulsion Reaches North Pole for the First Time in History

ABB said in its released that Norwegian Coast Guard’s vessel KV Svalbard was on an international environmental research expedition when it became the first ever Azipod-powered ship to reach the North Pole. With its superior performance in the harshest of ice conditions, Azipod propulsion has become an industry standard for icegoing vessels, enabling vessels to cross the Northern Sea route independently. In late August 2019, Azipod propulsion has made history, driving a Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker all the way to the North Pole. In another historical debut, KV Svalbard became the first Norwegian vessel to sail to the ‘top of the world’.

KV Svalbard, built in 2001 and equipped with twin 5MW Azipod icebreaking units, was sailing in the Arctic waters as part of the international scientific expedition, Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment, led by a Norwegian non-profit research foundation Nansen Center. The aim of the expedition was to place seabed sensors that would allow the scientists to monitor water temperatures in the Arctic waters. Reaching the North Pole adds another dimension to the research, enabling data collection from some of the most remote parts of the Arctic Ocean.

The Azipod propulsion system, where the electric drive motor is in a submerged pod outside the ship hull, can rotate 360 degrees to increase maneuverability, which is particularly crucial for vessels operating in ice. Azipod icebreaking propulsion is capable of breaking up to 2.1 m thick Arctic ice and has a proven ability to cut fuel consumption by up to 20 percent compared to traditional shaftline propulsion systems.

ABB to Bring Autonomous Technology to the Port of Singapore

ABB, in collaboration with Keppel O&M’s technology arm, Keppel Marine and Deepwater Technology, will jointly develop the technology for autonomous vessels and retrofit a 32-meter harbor tugboat with leading-edge digital solutions, enabling autonomous vessel operations in the Port of Singapore at the end of 2020. Upon project completion, the vessel is anticipated to be South Asia’s first autonomous tug. During the initial phase of the project, the vessel, operated by Keppel Offshore & Marine’s joint-venture company Keppel Smit Towage, will complete a series of navigational tasks in a designated test area in the Port of Singapore, steered from an onshore control center. The second phase of the project will see the vessel perform autonomous collision avoidance tasks while under remote supervision.

With this project, ABB takes the next step towards autonomous shipping, building on the insights gained from the groundbreaking trial of a remotely operated passenger ferry Suomenlinna II, carried out in Helsinki harbor in November 2018. The Port of Singapore, which sees over 130,000 vessels calling annually, has exponentially denser shipping patterns, which will add another layer of complexity to the trials.

The trials aim to validate the increased safety and efficiency of tug operations by utilizing digital solutions that are already available today for nearly any kind of vessel. Integral to the trials will be ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot portfolio of solutions, which enable the ‘sense-decide-act’ loop required for any form of autonomy. ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Vision will provide the sensor fusion from existing and new systems to generate a digital situational awareness while ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Control will execute the necessary conning commands.

Tug operations, where a tugboat maneuvers other vessels by pushing or towing them, often in crowded harbors, can be demanding. In addition, sometimes the tugs have to do long transits to get to their destination. Performing the transit autonomously and under remote supervision would enable the onboard crew to rest and be alert when they are needed in the actual work of the tug.

KMDTech will work with the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) to develop various technologies and be the system integrator for the autonomous solutions. American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) will provide the Approval in Principle for the novel features such as Remote Navigation Control and Autonomous Control System.

ABB Tests Subsea Power Technology System

ABB’s pioneering subsea power distribution and conversion technology system is commercially viable, bringing ground breaking potential for cleaner, safer and more sustainable offshore oil and gas production, following the completion of a 3,000-hour shallow water test. For the first time worldwide, energy companies will be able to access a reliable supply of up to 100 megawatts of power, over distances up to 600 kilometers and down to 3,000 meters water depth, at pressures that could shatter a brick. This is all achievable with a single cable with little or no maintenance for up to 30 years, making oil and gas production feasible in far out and deep ocean environments.

The USD 100 million research, design and development Joint Industry Project between ABB and Equinor with its partners Total and Chevron was initiated in 2013. The validation of the shallow water test at a sheltered harbor in Vaasa, Finland, means the majority of the world’s offshore hydrocarbon resources are now in reach for electrification. By powering pumps and compressors on the seabed, closer to the reservoir, ABB’s subsea power distribution and conversion technology can significantly reduce power consumption. There is potential for substantial energy savings, with reduced carbon emissions using power from shore. ABB’s subsea power technology can connect to any power source, enabling future integrations with renewable energy, such as wind and hydro power.

Based on a specific field development case, the new technology could offer CAPEX savings of more than USD 500 million, if eight consumers, such as pumps or compressors, are linked through a single cable over a distance of 200 km from other infrastructure.

Having fewer people offshore will reduce risks and improve overall safety. Against a backdrop of digitalization and increasing autonomy in offshore operations, new opportunities are also anticipated in the ocean ecosystem.

ABB Powers Pioneering Floating Solar Plant in Switzerland

ABB partners with Romande Energie to supply its market leading inverter solutions for one of the world’s highest floating PV installations which increases efficiency of DC production by up to 30 percent even in the winter. The innovative solar plant, situated 1810 meters above sea level on the artificial Lac des Toules in Switzerland, is predicted to produce more than 800,000 kWh of electricity per year and supply up to 220 homes in the region. Located in the Swiss Alps, Lac des Toules is the latest in a global trend for installing floating Photovoltaic structures, which offer over 50 percent more efficiency by using topography and the surrounding natural resources, as well as being driven by a need to source alternative locations for PV systems where onshore land is at a premium.

The plant in Lac des Toules is unique due it its high-altitude location and climatic conditions, along with the higher than average annual yields even in winter months when there are extreme minus temperatures and low solar irradiation.

Yields and efficiency levels are improved thanks to the use of bifacial modules and the ‘albedo effect’ whereby the lake and snow’s reflective light is captured by the PV system. This enables the PV plant to continue to operate and produce electricity even when there is snow coverage.
