Windfloat Atlantic Begins Shifting of Wind Power Unit

The first WindFloat Atlantic unit has set off for its final destination off the Portuguese coast of Viana do Castelo, where the exploitation of the floating wind farm will take place. Since it can be located in very deep waters, WindFloat can access energy resources in extremely large marine areas in order to address major social challenges, such as the transition to cleaner energy, energy security and climate change, by time that generates jobs, economic growth and opportunities for sustainable investment.

The first platform with the fully installed Windfloat Atlantic wind turbine has departed from the Spanish port of Ferrol towards its final destination 20 km off the coast of Viana do Castelo, in Portugal. Once it reaches its final location, the three floating structures, with a height of 30 meters and a distance of 50 meters between each of its columns , will be installed and form the first floating wind farm in continental Europe.

The structure that has departed from the outer port of Ferrol encompasses a floating platform and a wind turbine, the largest ever installed on a surface of these characteristics. In the coming months, the other two platforms will be incorporated to complete the wind farm that, with its 25 MW of installed capacity, will be able to generate enough energy to supply the equivalent of 60,000 users per year.

Siemens Gamesa to Acquire Selected Assets of Senvion

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy announced that it has reached agreement to acquire selected European assets of Senvion Group for EUR 200 million. The assets included in the transaction are a large part of the European Onshore Service Business of Senvion Group and all associated assets and operations to provide full service, all the Intellectual Property of Senvion, as well as the onshore blade manufacturing facility in Vagos, Portugal. Senvion´s European service assets will strengthen Siemens Gamesa´s capacity and potential in an important segment. The acquisition of a Service fleet of 8.9GW from Senvion will take Siemens Gamesa to a total of nearly 69GW under maintenance. The addition of these assets helps to diversify Siemens Gamesa´s business mix and geographical exposure with contracts that offer long-term visibility and renewal rates that have historically been very high.

The onshore blade manufacturing plant in Portugal is one of Europe´s most competitive manufacturing facilities. The Vagos plant would help to strengthen Siemens Gamesa´s industrial value chain and reduce dependency on supplier sourcing from Asia, mitigating volatility amid the uncertainties brought about by current trade issues. The highly competitive facility is complementary to existing SGRE blade capacity, has a best-in-class operational features and will help to support international sales.

As part of the acquisition, approximately 2,000 Senvion employees are expected to join Siemens Gamesa.

Subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and achieving other closing conditions, Siemens Gamesa expects to close the respective acquisition of assets in the first half of the fiscal year 2020 (October 2019 - March 2020), and as a result it will have no impact on financial performance in fiscal 2019.

EBRD Invests in TERNA ENERGY Green Bond

The EBRD is stepping up its efforts to support renewables in Greece by supporting TERNA ENERGY with an EUR 18 million investment in the Greek company’s successful issuance of a seven-year EUR 150 million green bond. The funds will finance additional investments in renewable energy projects in Greece. The projects will also contribute to the country’s target of increasing the share of renewable energy to 35% of its total energy consumption by 2030. The investment is part of the EBRD’s Greek Corporate Bonds Framework, developed to extend the Bank’s support for the local corporate bond market and to strengthen its long-term viability.

TERNA ENERGY is the largest wind-electricity producer in Greece. It has 1,512 MW of renewable energy power plants in operation or under construction, primarily wind farms, located in Bulgaria, Greece, Poland and the United States of America.

Ernst & Young has verified that the bond meets the Climate Bonds Initiative’s classification as a certified climate bond.

The EBRD's participation in the bond issuance is expected to boost market confidence and contribute to building scale and critical mass for listed bond issuances. This can demonstrate the use of a financial instrument that is not yet widely utilised by Greek corporates, including the issuance of green bonds.

Offshore Wind to Become USD 1 Trillion Industry - IEA

According to an International Energy Agency report, offshore wind power will expand impressively over the next two decades, boosting efforts to decarbonise energy systems and reduce air pollution as it becomes a growing part of electricity supply. The IEA finds that global offshore wind capacity may increase 15-fold and attract around USD 1 trillion of cumulative investment by 2040. This is driven by falling costs, supportive government policies and some remarkable technological progress, such as larger turbines and floating foundations. That’s just the start – the IEA report finds that offshore wind technology has the potential to grow far more strongly with stepped-up support from policy makers.

Europe has pioneered offshore wind technology, and the region is positioned to be the powerhouse of its future development. Today, offshore wind capacity in the European Union stands at almost 20 GW. Under current policy settings, that is set to rise to nearly 130 GW by 2040. However, if the European Union reaches its carbon-neutrality aims, offshore wind capacity would jump to around 180 GW by 2040 and become the region’s largest single source of electricity. An even more ambitious vision, in which policies drive a big increase in demand for clean hydrogen produced by offshore wind, could push European offshore wind capacity dramatically higher.

China is also set to play a major role in offshore wind’s long-term growth, driven by efforts to reduce air pollution. The technology is particularly attractive in China because offshore wind farms can be built near the major population centres spread around the east and south of the country. By around 2025, China is likely to have the largest offshore wind fleet of any country, overtaking the United Kingdom. China’s offshore wind capacity is set to rise from 4 GW today to 110 GW by 2040. Policies designed to meet global sustainable energy goals could push that even higher to above 170 GW.

The United States has good offshore wind resources in the northeast of the country and near demand centres along the densely populated east coast, offering a way to help diversify the country’s power mix. Floating foundations would expand the possibilities for harnessing wind resources off the west coast.

The huge promise of offshore wind is underscored by the development of floating turbines that could be deployed further out at sea. In theory, they could enable offshore wind to meet the entire electricity demand of several key electricity markets several times over, including Europe, the United States and Japan.

Offshore Wind Outlook 2019 is the most comprehensive global study on the subject to date, combining the latest technology and market developments with a specially commissioned new geospatial analysis that maps out wind speed and quality along hundreds of thousands of kilometres of coastline around the world. The report is an excerpt from the flagship World Energy Outlook 2019, which will be published in full on 13 November.

Siemens Gamesa to Install Turbines at Hywind Tampen Wind Project in Norway

The world’s largest floating wind power plant will be installed in Norway, equipped with 11 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD turbines. Scheduled to be commissioned in late 2022, Hywind Tampen will be the first ever floating wind power plant to power offshore oil and gas platforms. Hywind Tampen will have a total capacity of 88 MW and be located some 140 kilometers from shore in an area with water depths of 260-300 meters between the Snorre and Gullfaks oil and gas platforms. Specifically, this wind power plant will be capable of meeting about 35 percent of the annual power demand of the Snorre and Gullfaks platforms.

The floating foundations in the Hywind Tampen project are ballast-stabilized and anchored to the seabed with mooring lines. With their lightweight nacelles, Siemens Gamesa large direct drive wind turbines are particularly suited for floating foundations.

The innovative partnership between Siemens Gamesa and Equinor dates back to 2009, when the world’s first full-scale floating wind turbine project, Hywind Demo, was successfully installed in Norway. This initiative was followed in 2017 by the 30 MW Hywind Scotland floating wind power plant, currently the world’s largest, installed at water depths between 90 and 120 meters. Hywind Scotland is a hugely successful project which has world-class safety performance and the highest capacity factor of any offshore wind farm in the UK. The Hywind Tampen project continues this partnership, bringing industrial-scale floating wind a giant leap forward.
