PSA Group is using the Frankfurt Motor Show to launch its Vauxhall/Opel brand’s electrified future.

It’s particularly significant because the rest of the group’s brands will not be officially represented by the factories to give the joint brand a clear stage to cement its future in the carbuying public’s mind. The brand, currently still with production plants in both the UK and Germany as it has had since the 1930s under General Motors’ ownership, will debut three models, two of which flying the electrified banner. Heading the list is the long-awaited Corsa-e bulit the group’s CMP multi-energy platform with a BEV powertrain boasting 134bhp from its 50kWh battery and acceleration from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds. Claimed range, under WLTP testing, is 205 miles and, using a public fast-charger, the car can be charged to 80% of its capacity in 30 minutes.

Next on the line-up will be the Grandland X Hybrid4, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle. Its powertrain comprises an electric drive system with two electric motors, all-wheel drive, a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery and a turbo-charged 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine claiming a combined output of 298bhp. Fuel consumption is a claimed 166mpg (138mpg US) on the WLTP combined cycle while emitting 36g/km CO2. Performance claimed is a 0-62mph sprint time of 6.1 seconds.

Finally, the brand’s new Astra compact hatch-back remains, as yet, ICE comprising three-cylinder, turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines with start/stop systems. These engines claim to offer CO2 reductions of up to 21% versus the outgoing model. All of the new engines are compliant with Euro 6d (6.3) and RDE 2.

Meituan maps out high-tech way ahead

Meituan, China's leading online food delivery-to-ride hailing firm, is joining a group of tech giants including Alibaba Group in developing a high-precision map, a trump card for them to drive unmanned services, and also a supplement to their core businesses.
A former Meituan employee who asked to remain anonymous told China Daily that it has been more than one year since the firm has started to develop map services.
"The map service is taken by the company as a tool in ramping up efforts in self-driving deliveries. It will also be a great supplement to Meituan's other businesses including food delivery, ride-hailing and shared bikes," he said, adding that the team still remains small with only several dozens of people.
Meituan, as the fourth-largest domestic internet firm in terms of capitalization, has already started trial operations of autonomous delivery in shopping malls, office buildings and university campuses since last year. It said it will start large-scale operations of its driverless delivery vehicles this year.
Meituan confirmed that is has been working on the map service. "We set up the location-based services, or LBS, team in October last year following the corporate restructuring. The unit includes map services, ride-hailing and traffic data management," it told China Daily.
Another source said that the unit hired Zhang Shaowen, then vice-president of second-hand car platform Renrenche, who was also a former intelligent navigation general manager and chief web architect at Baidu Map, to be a tech leader of the LBS team.
Earlier last week, Meituan posted several new job openings for digital mapping experts, which covered positions including path algorithms, web development and software testing.
Industry insiders pointed out Meituan's move is part of a broader trend where tech firms including Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent Holdings Ltd and Baidu Inc are racing ahead in developing high-precision maps to improve or supplement their business.
Baidu Map, along with Alibaba's online mapper AutoNavi, also known as Amap, and Tencent Map have been gearing up such efforts and account for the majority of the map service market in China.
Huawei also plans to unveil its own mapping service, known as Map Kit, by October, which will be connected to local mapping services covering 150 countries and regions.
"High-precision maps are a key indispensable factor to achieve self-driving. Embedded with sensors and algorithms, it provides unmanned cars with critical support including locating accurately and changing the route according to the latest road condition," Song Baicheng, a senior analyst from vehicle consultancy Gasgoo Research Institute, said in a report.
The report added that such maps are not merely guiding only but can be embedded with various functionalities including smart city services, tourism and ride-hailing in the future.

The CARMERA Autonomous Map provides high-definition (HD) maps and navigation data to autonomous vehicles (AVs) in real time. The company uses data collected by sensors in partner vehicles. It says its “proprietary data pipelines conform to any customer-specific implementation of localization, verification, path planning, and simulation, allowing AVs to know where they are, confirm what they’re seeing, and know where to go next.”

Last year, CARMERA raised Series B funding of $20 million from GV, formerly Google Ventures. The company also won the Best in Show and Startup of the Year awards at the 2018 North American International Auto Show.

The Robot Report spoke with Ro Gupta, CEO of CARMERA, about the importance of mapping to AVs and what the startup has learned in New York.

A key part of the AV stack

“If you think about the three or four core parts of any autonomous vehicle or robotics stack, they include localization, perception, planning, and control or actuation,” explained Gupta. “With the exception of Tesla, everyone in the industry is using maps to get to redundancy for the first three of these questions: ‘Where am I?’ ‘What’s around me?’ ‘What’s next?’ and ‘How do I do it?'”

“Years ago, maps were used for only one or two of these questions, but now they’re useful for all of them, and we want them as close to the truth and the real world as possible,” he said. “To get to the level of 9s for the accuracy we want, a so-called living map is essential, with aspects looking backward and forward in time.”

“We want knowledge of what the street looks like, down to the centimeter — as well as lane markings, new signs, or lights — and the mapping service also says what’s around the corner or six blocks ahead to take into account,” Gupta said. “Also, there’s the concept of wisdom. By keeping a map up to date, you can pick up on historical information that’s useful for risk management. You can also have a longitudinal view of pedestrian activity or double-parking density.”

“This is not the same as monitoring in real time, but if you know that a certain part of New York or San Francisco is busy at a certain time of day or month, you can take it into account for planning,” he added. “A living map that’s always regenerating is useful for both short-range motion planning and longer-range path planning.”

Its Apollo fleet of autonomous vehicles reached more than 2 million test km on the road in June, across 13 cities, including Beijing, Changsha, Xiong’an and Xiamen. The company said it was granted almost half of the 204 autonomous driving pilot licences awarded in China.

Users of the Baidu Maps voice feature increased 2.5-times year-on-year to 450 million as of end-June.
