AMG Vanadium to Open Facility in Muskingum County

A new business is set to bring about 100 production and management jobs to Muskingum County after agreeing to purchase land for a new plant Wednesday.

AMG Vanadium, a company which converts spent refinery catalyst to provide an alloy called ferrovanadium and other products to the carbon and stainless steel industries, signed a purchase agreement with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority for 154 acres of land at the Eastpointe Business Park. Based in Cambridge, Ohio, the company expects this new production facility to almost double AMG’s capacity to process spent catalyst.

The biggest impact AMG Vanadium President Hoy Frakes said this new plant will have on the area is its ability to provide jobs. The plant will create about 500 temporary construction jobs, in addition to the 100 plant positions. Construction will begin this summer and completion of the plant is expected in 2021.

“I lived in Muskingum County for 18 years,” Frakes said. “This is really a strong community and to be able to build a plant in this area is something truly phenomenal.”

Frakes said AMG’s Cambridge facility is the “gold standard” of spent catalyst processing globally, and that the Zanesville plant will improve on that foundation and contain new technology. The new plant will have an estimated 34,000 tons of spent catalyst processing capability, but the Cambridge location will remain the headquarters for AMG, according to Frakes.

Outside of bringing a new plant and more jobs to the area, Port Authority Executive Director Matt Abbott said this agreement will help the county in the bigger picture of job creation and growth in the community. The plant will bring new residents, and those residents will bring new business to the area, Abbott said.

“Just like any other business that we have in Muskingum County, we just don’t support them when they come here. This is a lifelong relationship that we develop throughout. It’s cradle to grave when we’re looking at things in our organization, so we’re very excited to build a strong partnership with this company.”

Eastpointe Business Park was one of five sites the Port Authority saw as a potential fit for AMG. The park is located 2.5 miles north of Exit 157 on I-70, just east of Zanesville. By preparing to open a plant in Eastpointe, AMG will join the likes of Dollar General, AVON, Bimbo Bakery, Bilco Company, Halliburton Energy Services and TRP Zanesville.

AMG picks site in Ohio for new plant
Making good on its announced plan to build a second catalyst recycling plant in the vicinity of its existing plant in Cambridge, OH, AMG Vanadium has purchased a site in Muskingum County’s Washington Township in Southeast Ohio.
AMG also recently received approval from the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority to market $300-million of senior unsecured 30-year tax-exempt bonds to finance construction of the new plant, which is slated to double AMG’s capacity by adding 35,000 mtpy of spent catalyst processing and over 6-million ppy of vanadium production capacity.
The new facility, planned for Eastpointe Business Park in Washington Township, will be similar to AMG Vanadium’s existing plant, which has operated in Cambridge since 1952.
The first phase of construction is expected to begin later this summer and be completed in the second half of 2020. Phase 1 will focus on a raw material storage building and a multiple-hearth roaster.
Overall project completion, including construction of the ferroalloy production facility, is expected in 2021.

Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority Purchase Agreement With Cambridge Business
    Local News

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A purchase agreement was executed during the Port Authority meeting Wednesday morning.

The agreement was made between the Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority and AMG Vanadium, a company that has a long standing reputation in the region. AMG Vanadium is a global leader in management of spent refinery catalyst from the oil industry. The purchase agreement was signed for a new 154 acre location at the Eastpointe Business Park.

“You have projects that come to you and they tell you what their needs are. And then you go into your community and you look for sites that would fit their needs. So this was one of five different sites in the community that we thought would have been a potential fit for this company. We’re just very excited that one of the five has been chosen to move forward with this purchase agreement today,” said Port Authority Executive Director, Matt Abbott.

AMG Vanadium is aiming to create jobs and growth within the community with the new location. An existing facility is operating in Cambridge, but this new state-of-the-art facility will allow their capacity to double.

“This new plant is going to have new technology. It’s going to be a better facility than the Cambridge facility. New technology which is really going to help us expand what we’re doing globally. Our refine partners; the Shells, the ExxonMobils, the Marathons, and those kinds of people really count on this to be able to take care of this material for them and it’s a big move,” said President of AMG Vanadium, Hoy E. Frakes Jr.

Abbott said the Port Authority is excited to build a strong partnership with AMG Vanadium and continue what they have accomplished for the region.
