German automakers to invest EUR 60 billion in electric cars and automation - VDA Reuters reported that car industry association VDA president Mr Bernhard Mattes said “We will invest over EUR 40 billion in electric mobility during the next three years, and another EUR 18 billion will be invested in digitisation and connected and automated driving. The range of electric car models from German manufacturers would treble to around 100 in that period. The ramp-up of electric mobility is coming in Europe. Without it, the EU's CO2 targets cannot be achieved by 2030.’ He added “Germany, together with a few other major European economies, is set to have a much higher share of electric vehicles among its new registrations than the EU average. Charging infrastructure for electric cars must be expanded and incentives offered to buyers of e-cars.” Source : Reuters

Germany's Varta applies for battery cell production subsidies Reuters reported that German battery maker Varta said that it had applied for government subsidies to mass-produce lithium-ion battery cells, as the Economy Ministry's deadline for companies to send in their applications to receive state subsidies ends. Varta said it was planning to hike production of battery cells to over 60 million cells per year, adding that it was cooperating with European partners to advance European battery cell production. Germany has earmarked 1 billion euros (USD 1.13 billion) to support a consortium looking to produce electric car battery cells and plans to fund a research facility to develop next-generation solid-state batteries.

Toyoda Gosei develops battery case for electrified vehicles Toyoda Gosei Co Ltd has developed a battery case made of plastic to accommodate the large amount of batteries in electrified vehicles. These battery cases are used on the Corolla PHV and Levin PHV that Toyota Motor Corporation began selling in China in March 2019. These cases increase the life of batteries by maintaining a gap between the stored batteries that allows them to be cooled by outside air brought in through ventilation holes in the sides. The cases are also insulated with internal conductors in the plastic to ensure safe performance. Toyoda Gosei will continue to utilize its expertise as a rubber and plastic specialist in efforts to optimize the cooling systems around batteries and reduce weight to contribute to improved automobile performance.

Door: ABM Financial News.info@abmfn.nl Redactie: +31(0)20 26 28 999 © Copyright ABM Financial News B.V. 65% of UK think increased adoption of low or zero emissions vehicles is important The Mayor of London’s introduction of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone will help to ease the minds of the one in three UK adults that has felt affected by poor air quality in city centres, according to a survey by Nissan. Poor air quality in cities is caused by a combination of traffic, construction sites, building energy use for utilities such as heating and hot water, as well as domestic appliances and even cleaning products. In a survey of 2,000 adults across the UK, Nissan’s research found that only 1 in 3 were aware of the ULEZ going live on 8th April, yet almost half of all respondents support the daily charge’s introduction. Confusion over whether one must pay the charge or not was high, with 75% of those surveyed having no idea what the Euro emission standard rating is for their current vehicle – the criteria that dictates their eligibility to pay the ULEZ charge or be exempt. Similarly, despite 60% of respondents being willing to purchase an electric vehicle to benefit the environment, only a quarter of respondents were aware of the financial incentives available to help them do so. This contrasts with the 43% that said they were more likely to make the move to electric as a result of financial incentives. Interestingly, even non-Londoners were in favour of ULEZ, with 35% saying they thought their nearest city would benefit from the introduction of a ULEZ charge. In addition, 31% said it would change how much they drove and 27% said it would make them more likely to adopt an electric vehicle as a result. Health and air quality The impact of air quality on health is also top of mind for adults in the UK. 1 in 4 respondents are worried about their health, with growing concerns they will develop health issues such as asthma, because of living in a city. Nissan’s survey found that >40% of adults suffer with more breathing issues when getting around cities than they do in the countryside, while >60% think air quality is the most dangerous long-term health concern facing people who live in modern cities. Mr Andrew Sellars, Sales Director and Interim MD, Nissan Motor (GB) Limited said that “It’s clear that as the UK continues to implement its Road to Zero strategy which will see at least half of all new cars sold being ultra-low emission models by 2030 – UK citizens are taking a more active interest in the benefits of electric vehicles, which contribute strongly to improving air quality in city centres. However, it’s also clear that more needs to be done to increase public awareness about how electric vehicles, such as the Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 van, can help drivers avoid charges like those in the new ULEZ zone. The financial incentives to purchase an electric vehicle can be greater than £10,000, and are there to encourage people to change their vehicle for one with zero tailpipe emissions.” Mr Iker Lazzari, Fleet Director, Nissan Motor (GB) Limited said that “It has never made more commercial sense for van and fleet owners to go electric. The Nissan LEAF, Europe’s best-selling EV, and the e-NV200 light commercial vehicle are just two examples of how Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility offering for fleets provides vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions that deliver significant cost savings to businesses, while also helping to clean up London’s air in line with the ambitions of the ULEZ charge.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Toyota promotes global vehicle electrification by providing nearly 24,000 licenses royalty free With consideration for the amount of time, money and resources needed to develop sustainable mobility to help combat rising emissions and continuing to utilize currently available technology, Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announced two measures related to its patents and technical knowledge to further promote the widespread use of electrified vehicles. First, Toyota announced that it will grant royalty-free licenses on nearly 24,000 patents it holds (including some pending applications) for vehicle electrification-related technologies. Second, Toyota will provide fee-based technical support to other manufacturers developing and selling electrified vehicles when they use Toyota’s motors, batteries, PCUs, control ECUs, and other vehicle electrification system technologies as part of their powertrain systems. Ultimately, by granting royalty-free patents and providing technical support on its vehicle electrification systems, Toyota aims to help further promote the widespread use of electrified vehicles, and in so doing, help governments, automakers, and society at large accomplish goals related to climate change. Mr Shigeki Terashi, Member of the Board and Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Corporation said that “Based on the high volume of inquiries we receive about our vehicle electrification systems from companies that recognize a need to popularize hybrid and other electrified vehicle technologies, we believe that now is the time for cooperation. If the number of electrified vehicles accelerates significantly in the next 10 years, they will become standard, and we hope to play a role in supporting that process.” The royalty-free patents are advanced technologies found in electrified vehicles, particularly those used in hybrid electric vehicles that have helped Toyota realize enhanced performance, reduced size, and cost reductions. More specifically, the patents included are for parts and systems, such as electric motors, power control units (PCUs), and system controls. These are core technologies that can be applied to the development of various types of electrified vehicles including HEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). Together, Toyota will offer approximately 23,740 patents awarded over more than 20 years of electrified vehicle technology development. The grant period will start immediately and last through the end of 2030. Contracts for the grants may be issued by contacting Toyota and discussing specific licensing terms and conditions. Toyota has already been offering 5,680 patents related to its fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) since January 2015. Now, Toyota is adding approximately 2,590 patents related to electric motors, 2,020 patents related to PCUs, 7,550 patents related to system controls, 1,320 engine transaxle patents, 2,200 charger patents, and 2,380 fuel cell patents (bringing the total of fuel cell related patents to 8,060). LG Chem raises USD 1.56 billion to fund its EV battery business expansion Yonhap reported that South Korea's No 1 EV battery maker LG Chem Ltd announced last week that it has raised USD 1.56 billion by selling debts overseas to finance the expansion of its production facility. The company said the proceeds from the debt sale will be used to expand its EV battery plant and other production facilities. The debt sale was arranged by lead managers, such as Citigroup and BNP Paribas. LG Chem entered the EV battery business in 2009 and has supplied batteries to global carmakers, such as Audi and Renault-Nissan. It currently operates EV battery plants in China, the United States and South Korea. The company said earlier that it aims to raise its EV battery production capacity to 110 GWh by 2020 from the current 34 GWh. Source : Yonhap
Hyundai Motor announces pilot project to generate electricity from hydrogen with NEXO technology Hyundai Motor Company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with local energy firms Korea East-West Power (EWP) and Deokyang to generate electricity from hydrogen. The pilot project conducted under the MOU will deliver a 1 megawatt (MW) hydrogen fuel cell power facility, with Hyundai Motor building the fuel cell system, EWP managing the facility and sale of electricity, and Deokyang supplying the hydrogen. The use of Hyundai’s proprietary fuel cell technology in the pilot project marks the first time local technology is being used in a fuel cell power facility in Korea in lieu of the foreign technology that the market has been dependent on. The 1 MW power facility, scheduled to break ground later this year in Ulsan, will consist of two container-type 500 kW generator modules, each loaded with multiple power modules from Hyundai’s flagship fuel cell vehicle NEXO. The facility can generate an annual supply of 8,000 MWh, enough electricity to power approximately 2,200 households at 300 kWh per month, while emitting zero greenhouse gases or pollution because it is fueled by hydrogen. The hydrogen used in the facility will be byproduct hydrogen brought from a nearby petrochemical complex through a pipe network, reducing costs and making use of local energy sources. The pilot project presents an opportunity for Hyundai Motor to take its fuel cell technology beyond the automotive industry to achieve economy of scale, which will subsequently lead to cost competitiveness, job creation, and growth of other related industries. EWP will be able to secure an increased share of renewables in its energy mix, while Deokyang will be a step closer to bringing down the price of hydrogen through increased trade volume and stable management of supply and demand. Hyundai Motor will collaborate closely with EWP and Deokyang to expand the scope of the project down the line. Source : Strategic Research Institute
