    Nissan announces INFINITI management changes

    Nissan Motor Co Ltd announced that effective immediately, Christian Meunier is promoted to president of INFINITI Motor Co Ltd and chairman of the Management Committee INFINITI, responsible for managing the INFINITI brand and its entire business globally. Ms Meunier has been serving as global division vice president of global marketing and sales operations for INFINITI, managing all marketing and sales activities.

    In recent years, Ms Meunier led operations in both the US and Canada, as senior vice president for Nissan sales & marketing and operations at Nissan North America, and as president of Nissan Canada. This included all sales, marketing communications, model line brand management, parts and service, product planning, trucks and light commercial vehicles, customer quality and dealer network development functions. As president of Nissan Canada, he led the organization to record volume and market share through effective marketing programs and a strengthening of the dealer network. Meunier began his Nissan career in 2002 at Nissan Europe.

    Nissan CEO and President Hiroto Saikawa said that “Christian Meunier brings a record of success to this role, in addition to continuity based on his current global marketing and sales leadership position at INFINITI. We are fortunate to welcome him to this new challenge.”

    Ms Meunier replaces Roland Krueger, who has been leading INFINITI since 2015. Krueger has elected to leave the company to pursue new opportunities. He played a central role in advancing the INFINITI brand’s progress in the premium segment around the world.

    Mr Saikawa said that “Roland Krueger’s contributions over the last four years steered INFINITI through an important period of growth. We thank him and wish him well in his future pursuits.”

    Uitgeputte Japanse werknemers mogen dutje doen op werk

    Japanse werknemers werken te lang over en slapen te weinig. Bedrijven in het land doen er daarom alles aan om personeel uitgerust te krijgen. Het personeel beschikt over een speciale kamer om ongestoord een dutje te doen en krijgt een vergoeding wanneer zij op tijd naar bed gaan, meldt The Guardian.

    Personeel dat te veel overwerkt en te weinig slaapt, is niet te genieten én minder productief. Onderzoek van internationale denktank RAND laat zien dat het slaapgebrek van werknemers in het land de Japanse economie zo'n 120 miljard euro per jaar kost. Reden voor steeds meer Japanse bedrijven om ervoor te zorgen dat hun werknemers uitgerust aan het werk kunnen.

    Hiervoor richten zij bijvoorbeeld aparte kamers in waar personeel zich terug kan trekken voor een dutje. Zo hebben werknemers bij IT-bedrijf Nextbeat de beschikking over twee speciale kamers - een voor mannen en een voor vrouwen - om wat slaap in te halen op zachte banken. Om rust te garanderen is gebruik van laptop, telefoon of tablet in de kamers verboden en staan er apparaten die achtergrondgeluid maskeren.

    ,,Een dutje doen kan net zoveel betekenen voor iemands productiviteit als een gebalanceerd dieet en voldoende lichaamsbeweging’’, verklaart Emiko Sumikawa, bestuurslid van Nextbeat, tegen persagentschap Kyodo over het nut van de kamers.

    Niet genoeg slaap
    Het toestaan van dutjes op het werk doet het misschien lijken of Japanse werknemers lui zijn. Niets is echter minder waar. Door een cultuur waarin veel overwerken de norm is zijn Japanners de minst uitgeruste mensen ter wereld. Japanse mannen en vrouwen slapen gemiddeld maar 6 uur en 35 minuten per nacht, blijkt uit onderzoek van fitnesstrackerfabrikant Polar onder mensen uit 28 landen. Dat is 45 minuten minder dan het internationale gemiddelde. In een poll door gezondheidsproductenbedrijf Fuji Ryoki zei 92,6 procent van de Japanners boven de 20 jaar niet genoeg slaap te krijgen.

    In slaap vallen in het openbaar vervoer of op het werk is dan ook niet ongewoon in het land en wordt niet per se als iets negatiefs gezien. Dat je achter je bureau in slaap dommelt laat alleen maar je toewijding aan je werk zien, is de gedachte.

    Bekende doodsoorzaak
    Maar er zit een keerzijde aan de Japanse werkethiek. Extreem overwerken is een bekende doodsoorzaak geworden in het land en staat bekend onder de term karoshi: werknemers gaan zo gebukt onder de werkdruk dat zij geen andere uitweg zien dan hun eigen leven te nemen, of het harde werken tast hun gezondheid zo aan dat zij bezwijken. Een van de bekendste voorbeelden van karoshi is de dood van journaliste Miwa Sado in 2013. In een maand tijd klokte zij 159 uren overwerk en had ze slechts twee dagen vrij. De 31-jarige Sado overleed aan de gevolgen van hartfalen.

    In de strijd tegen extreem overwerken stelde de Japanse overheid het maximum aantal overuren al bij naar maximaal 100 uur per maand en 720 uur per jaar. Bedrijven bedachten innovatieve methoden om werknemers op tijd naar huis te krijgen, zoals een drone die overwerkend personeel net zo lang hindert tot ze het opgeven en naar huis gaan.

    Om slaaptekort bij personeel te voorkomen gooit weddingplannerbedrijf Crazy Inc. het over een andere boeg . Werknemers die minimaal vijf dagen in de week zes uur slaap halen worden daarvoor beloond. Met een app wordt hun slaappatroon bijgehouden en kunnen werknemers punten verdienen, die ingewisseld kunnen worden in de bedrijfskantine. Het maximum tegoed dat werknemers kunnen opbouwen staat gelijk aan ongeveer 495 euro per jaar.

    Werknemers die een gelukkig leven leiden, verrichten betere prestaties op het werk, zegt CEO en oprichter van het bedrijf Kazuhiko Moriyama tegen economische nieuwswebsite Bloomberg over de maatregel. ,,Je moet de rechten van werknemers beschermen, anders wordt het land zelf er zwakker van.’’

    Renault: geen bewijs fraude Ghosn

    PARIJS (AFN) - Renault heeft geen bewijs gevonden dat de in Japan gearresteerde topman Carlos Ghosn fraude heeft gepleegd bij het Franse autoconcern. Dat liet Renault weten na een intern onderzoek naar de zaak.

    Donderdag vond een bestuursvergadering plaats bij Renault over Ghosn. Het bedrijf stelt dat geen overtredingen zijn gevonden wat betreft de topman. Hij zit al sinds 19 november vast in Japan op verdenking van onder meer belastingfraude bij Nissan, waar hij ook topman was. Ghosn is formeel nog steeds de baas van Renault, dat een samenwerkingsverband heeft met Nissan. Wel is hij op tijdelijke basis vervangen door operationeel directeur Thierry Bolloré.

    Renault gaf aan het onderzoek voort te zullen zetten. Eerder op de dag wees een Japanse rechter een nieuw verzoek tot vrijlating van de 64-jarige Ghosn nog af. Hij is volgens zijn advocaat ziek geworden door zijn verblijf in een koude cel.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De Japanse aandelenbeurs is vrijdag met winst geëindigd. Beleggers trokken zich op aan de vijfdaagse winstreeks op Wall Street en bleven hoopvol over een mogelijke handelsdeal tussen de Verenigde Staten en China, na de bemoedigende gesprekken tussen de twee landen eerder deze week. Elders in het Verre Oosten gingen de meeste beurzen ook vooruit.

    De toonaangevende Nikkei in Tokio ging met een plus van 1 procent het lange weekeinde in op 20.359,70 punten. De financiële markten in Japan zijn maandag gesloten vanwege de Dag van Eerbied voor Ouderen. De Japanse hoofdindex won in de eerste volledige handelsweek van het jaar ongeveer 4 procent.

    Bij de bedrijven dikte Fast Retailing, een zwaargewicht in de index, ruim 6 procent aan na publicatie van de resultaten. De eigenaar van kledingketen Uniqlo zag de operationele winst in het afgelopen kwartaal met 8 procent dalen, maar handhaafde zijn winstverwachting voor het hele boekjaar. De Japanse maker van fabrieksmachines Yaskawa Electric klom bijna 2 procent, ondanks een verlaging van de winstverwachting voor het boekjaar dat eindigt in februari.

    De beurs in Shanghai noteerde tussentijds 0,3 procent hoger en de Hang Seng-index in Hongkong won 0,4 procent. In Seoul kreeg de Kospi er 0,6 procent bij en de All Ordinaries in Sydney sloot 0,4 procent lager.

    Mazda develops world first cold stamped parts using 1,310 MPA class high strength steel

    Mazda Motor Corporation, working separately with Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation and JFE Steel Corporation, has developed the world’s first cold-stamped vehicle body parts made from 1,310 MPa-class high-strength steel.1 The parts are used in Mazda’s new-generation Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture, which will underpin upcoming models starting from the all-new Mazda3. High-strength steel enables automakers to make parts from thinner sheet metal while retaining the necessary yield strength. This results in a lighter vehicle body, which contributes to improved handling stability and fuel economy. A strong body is also essential to ensure crash safety performance, and the application of higher-strength steel has been widely anticipated.

    Until now, cold-stamping of vehicle body structural members has only been possible with 1,180 MPa or lower-classed steel, due to the material’s formability and the difficulty of ensuring dimensional accuracy after processing. Working in collaboration with the above-mentioned companies, however, Mazda has found an appropriate set of processing conditions that make the process possible with 1,310 MPa-class high-strength steel.

    The all-new Mazda3 uses 1,310 MPa-class high-strength steel for the front pillar inner, the roof rail inner, the hinge pillar reinforcement, the roof rail reinforcement, the No. 2 crossmember and the side sill inner reinforcement, saving about 3 kilograms over the same parts in the previous model.

    Toyota recalls 1.7 million vehicles worldwide over air bag inflators

    Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corp is recalling another 1.7 million vehicles worldwide for potentially faulty Takata air bag inflators as part of a multi-year industry recall campaign announced in 2016. Automakers are adding about 10 million vehicle inflators in the United States to what was already the largest-ever recall campaign in history. Last week, Ford Motor Co said it was recalling 953,000 vehicles worldwide for Takata inflators. Previously, 37 million U.S. vehicles with 50 million inflators were recalled and 16.7 million inflators remain to be replaced.

    At least 23 deaths worldwide have been linked to the rupturing of faulty Takata air bag inflators, including 15 in the United States.

    Toyota's new recall relates to vehicles from the 2010 through 2015 model years, and includes 1.3 million vehicles in the United States.

    More than 290 injuries worldwide have been linked to Takata inflators that could explode, spraying metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks. In total, 19 automakers are recalling more than 100 million potentially faulty inflators worldwide.

    To date, 21 deaths have been reported in Honda Motor Co vehicles and two in Ford vehicles. Both automakers have urged some drivers of older vehicles not to drive them until the inflators are replaced.

    The defect led Takata to file for bankruptcy protection in June 2017. In April, auto components maker Key Safety Systems completed a USD 1.6 billion deal to acquire Takata. The merged company, known as Joyson Safety Systems, is a subsidiary of Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp.

    Nissan unveils new Leaf EV

    Automotive News reported that Nissan unveiled a new version of its Leaf electric car after delaying its launch amid the shock arrest of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn. The new model, launched in Las Vegas, narrows the driving-range gap versus Tesla's Model 3 and General Motors's Chevrolet Bolt.

    Nissan called off key events in the wake of the scandal involving Ghosn, who was the architect of Nissan's EV vision and its pact with Renault and Mitsubishi Motors, the world's biggest auto alliance. Ghosn was arrested Nov. 19 in Japan on alleged financial crimes. He remains in a Tokyo prison as prosecutors build their case.

    The auto industry's increasing focus on automation and new-energy vehicles, along with the aggressive push into both areas by Tesla and scores of startups from China to Germany, has added to Nissan's challenges.

    The Leaf e+ has a more energy-dense battery that extends its range by about 40 percent, to as much as 226 miles (363 kilometers). That compares with the 220- to 310-mile range for Tesla's Model 3, which starts at USD 44,000 (38,387 euros), and the 238-mile range on the USD 36,620 Chevrolet Bolt. While the Leaf starts at about USD 30,000 in the US, Nissan is not releasing the price of the e+ until it's closer to starting sales this spring.

    Nissan has sold more than 380,000 Leaf vehicles globally since its model first went on sale in 2010, with over 128,000 in the U.S. The new Leaf will be available at dealerships in Japan starting this month, followed by the US, then Europe in mid-2019, Nissan said.

    Mr Ghosn loses appeal against detention and dimming bail prospects

    Industry Week reported that Mr Carlos Ghosn lost an appeal against his ongoing detention, diminishing prospects of an early release on bail for the auto industry icon fighting charges of financial misconduct while he was heading Nissan. The Tokyo District Court rejected the petition filed by Ghosn’s defense team, according to a statement from the court shared with the media by the Foreign Press in Japan Wednesday. Mr Ghosn’s lawyers will appeal the decision in a higher court, NHK reported.

    Wednesday’s decision by the judge means Ghosn could spend his time locked away in jail until an actual trial, which his main lawyer Motonari Otsuru has said may be as long as six months away. Ghosn’s current custody ends January 11, and prosecutors are likely to slap new charges or request another extension as they build a case against him.

    In his defense, Ghosn offered a two-pronged response. Mr Ghosn said he had been wrongly accused and unfairly detained, terming the accusations “merit-less and unsubstantiated.” He also painted a picture of a loyal company man who wouldn’t dream of harming a corporation for which he had “a genuine love and appreciation.”

    Japan challenges China in Angola with USD 650 million port scheme

    Global Construction Review reported that Japan’s private sector is preparing to make its first investment in Angola, a country that has become China’s main trading partner in Africa. Trading company Toyota Tsusho and export credit agency, Japan Bank for International Cooperation are expected to sign a deal this Friday to invest USD 650 million in the Namibe Bay project in the south of the country, close to its border with Namibia.

    The Port of Namibe is the third largest in Angola after Luanda and Lobito, and is connected by rail to iron ore mines. However, its capacity has been restricted by pier capacity and a lack of cranes.

    Toyota Tsusho plans to install Japanese equipment to expand the port’s export capacity, with funding to come from the private sector and JBIC, which will set up a credit line capped at about $650m. It will itself provide half that amount and raise the rest from private-sector banks.

    The Nikkei Asian Review comments that Japan’s businesses and government aim to prioritise profitability and “will ensure host countries' debts remain sustainable, aiming to establish a model for infrastructure exports to emerging economies”.

    The Japanese move is being seen as an attempt to challenge China’s dominant position in Angola (see Further reading). A number of infrastructure for oil deals over the past 10 years or so has left Beijing holding more than half of Angola’s external debts.

    Aziatische beurzen verliezen terrein

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurzen in het Verre Oosten gaven maandag terrein prijs. Tegenvallende Chinese handelscijfers wakkerden de zorgen aan over de impact van de Amerikaanse importtarieven op de Chinese economie. Beleggers bleven daarnaast voorzichtig voorafgaand aan de belangrijke stemming in het Verenigd Koninkrijk over het scheidingsakkoord met de Europese Unie en het begin van het cijferseizoen in de Verenigde Staten.

    De beurs in Shanghai noteerde tussentijds 0,8 procent lager en de Hang Seng-index in Hongkong verloor 1,5 procent. De Chinese export nam in december met 4,4 procent af, terwijl economen hadden gerekend op een stijging. Ook de import liet een onverwachte daling zien. Het handelsoverschot met de Verenigde Staten steeg afgelopen jaar echter met 17 procent tot 323,3 miljard dollar. Dat is het hoogste niveau sinds 2006. Het grote handelsoverschot is een doorn in het oog van de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump.

    In Seoul daalde de Kospi 0,7 procent onder aanvoering van de technologiebedrijven. Het Zuid-Koreaanse chipbedrijf SK Hynix, een zwaargewicht in de index, zakte 4,3 procent. De All Ordinaries in Sydney ging een fractie lager de dag uit. De beurs in Tokio was gesloten vanwege een nationale feestdag.

    Premiums for Japanese aluminium imports in Q1 fall

    Reuters reported that premiums for aluminium shipments to Japan for January to March were agreed to at their lowest in more than two years as spot premiums fell amid ample supply, said multiple sources directly involved in the pricing talks. The deals were mainly done at premiums of $85 per tonne, with a few deals done at USD83 and USD 84.

    The new premiums are down between 17 percent and 19 percent from the premium of USD 103 per tonne in the previous quarter, marking the second consecutive quarterly drop and the lowest since the fourth quarter of 2016.

    The final prices came below the initial offers of $91 to $93 a tonne made by producers.

    Japan is Asia’s biggest importer of aluminium and the premiums for primary metal shipments it agrees to pay each quarter over the benchmark London Metal Exchange cash price set the benchmark for the region.

    Nissan announces decisions from meeting of board of directors

    Nissan Motor Co Ltd held a meeting of its board of directors. At the beginning of the meeting, the board re-emphasized its commitment to its alliance partnership with Renault and Mitsubishi Motors. The board decided that in order to enhance the company’s governance, it will enlarge the scope of business decisions that require board approval.

    The board also decided on an interim process to determine compensation for directors and executives, which will have effect until the board makes its final decision based on proposals from the Special Committee for Improving Governance.

    The board also received an updated report on the ongoing internal investigation regarding serious misconduct by the company’s former chairman.

    Hitachi to freeze UK nuclear power project - Nikkei

    Reuters reported that Hitachi Ltd has decided to freeze its 3 trillion yen nuclear project in Britain and to post a special loss of about USD 2 billion (1.6 billion pounds) for the year ending in March. Nikkei business daily without citing sources reported that Hitachi is set to vote on the planned suspension at its board meeting next week.

    Hitachi’s Horizon Nuclear Power unit has struggled to find investors for its plans to build a new power plant in northern Wales.

    Hitachi said the asset value of the plant in Wales was 296 billion yen as of the end of September. The special loss from freezing the project is expected to be 200 billion to 300 billion yen, according to the Nikkei.

    Exportbedrijven helpen Nikkei vooruit

    TOKIO (AFN) - In Tokio, waar beleggers terugkeerden na een lang weekeinde, is de aandelenbeurs dinsdag hoger gesloten. Vooral de exportbedrijven waren in trek dankzij een daling van de Japanse yen. Verder waren alle ogen gericht op het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waar het parlement gaat stemmen over de brexitdeal van de Britse premier Theresa May.

    De Nikkei in Tokio eindigde 1 procent in de plus op 20.555,29 punten en bereikte het hoogste niveau in ruim drie weken. Maandag was de Japanse beurs gesloten vanwege een nationale feestdag. Chipbedrijf Tokyo Electron en technologieconcern TDK, die veel omzet halen uit het buitenland, stegen 3,2 en 4 procent.

    Nintendo dikte bijna 5 procent aan door overnamespeculatie. Het Amerikaanse zakenblad Barron's meldde dat iPhone-maker Apple mogelijk de Japanse computerspelletjesfabrikant zou willen overnemen.

    Elders in het Verre Oosten lieten de beursgraadmeters herstel zien na de verliezen een dag eerder. De Hang Seng-index in Hongkong ging tussentijds 1,8 procent vooruit en de beurs in Shanghai kreeg er 0,8 procent bij. In Seoul boekte de Kospi een winst van 1,5 procent en de All Ordinaries in Sydney sloot 0,7 procent hoger.

    Japanse machine-orders minder hard gestegen

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De machine-orders in Japan zijn in november toegenomen, maar in een lager tempo dan een maand eerder. Dit bleek woensdag uit overheidscijfers.

    De totale waarde van machine-orders steeg op maandbasis met 8,3 procent, na een toename van zelfs 19,5 procent in oktober. De data zijn gecorrigeerd voor seizoenseffecten.

    In de private sector maakten de orders in november, exclusief volatiele orders, slechts een pas op de plaats, na een stijging van 7,6 procent in oktober.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurs in Japan is woensdag lager geëindigd. Beleggers namen gas terug na de recente sterke opmars en grepen de aanhoudende onzekerheid rond de brexit in Europa aan om wat winst te nemen. Het risico op een chaotisch vertrek van het Verenigd Koninkrijk uit de Europese Unie is toegenomen, na de afwijzing van de brexitdeal van premier Theresa May in het Britse parlement.

    De toonaangevende Nikkei in Tokio sloot uiteindelijk 0,6 procent in de min op 20.442,75 punten. Eerder op de dag tikte de Japanse hoofdindex nog even het hoogste niveau in vier weken aan. Op macro-economisch vlak bleek dat de Japanse machine-orders in november een pas op de plaats hebben gemaakt, na de sterke toename in oktober.

    Vooral de bedrijven die sterk afhankelijk zijn van China werden van de hand gedaan. Cosmeticaverkopers als Shiseido en Kose verloren tot 3,5 procent. Een dag eerder waren deze exportbedrijven nog in trek door de hoop op meer stimuleringsmaatregelen in China.

    De andere beurzen in het Verre Oosten lieten een overwegend hoger beeld zien. De Hang Seng-index in Hongkong won 0,5 procent en de beurs in Shanghai stond vlak. De Kospi in Seoul ging 0,3 procent vooruit en de All Ordinaries in Sydney eindigde met een winst van 0,4 procent.

    Ghosn wife petitions Human Rights Watch to pressure Japan

    Automotive News reported that wife of jailed former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn has petitioned Human Rights Watch to protest Japan’s cruel and inhumane system of hostage justice and pressed the Japanese government to reform what she called a draconian system of pretrial detention. Ms Carole Ghosn addressed her plea to Kanae Doi, the Japan director for Human Rights Watch, in an undated nine-page letter, decrying her husband’s treatment since his Nov. 19 arrest.

    Ms Carole Ghosn wrote in the letter that “Under Japan’s ‘hostage justice’ system, prolonged detention to extract confessions is one of the prosecutors’ primary investigative tactics. No one should be forced to endure what my husband faces every day, particularly in a developed nation like Japan, the third largest economy in the world. Yet, this cruel and inhumane treatment of the criminally accused is all too common.”

    Ms Ghosn concluded by asking Human Rights Watch to highlight her husband’s case and others like it in Japan and to “press the Japanese government to reform its draconian system.”

    Ghosn has been held in a Japanese jail cell since then with little contact to the outside world. He is not permitted to see family members and has limited access to his own lawyers.

    Nissan filed criminal complaint against Ghosn

    Nissan Motor Co Ltd’s former Representative Director and Chairman Carlos Ghosn was indicted for aggravated breach of trust under Japan’s Companies Act. Prior to the charge being laid, Nissan filed a criminal complaint based on the same violation against Ghosn with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office. Nissan filed the criminal complaint on the basis of Ghosn’s misuse of a significant amount of the company’s funds. Nissan does not in any way tolerate such misconduct and calls for strict penalties. Nissan is continuing its own internal investigation into potential illegal expenditure of its funds.

    Also, Mr Ghosn and former Representative Director Greg Kelly were indicted for violating the Japan Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, namely making false disclosures in annual securities reports. Nissan, as a legal entity, was also indicted for the same violation.

    Nissan takes this situation extremely seriously and expresses its deepest regret for any concern caused to its stakeholders.

    Nissan will continue its efforts to strengthen its governance and compliance, including making accurate disclosures of corporate information. The efforts will be made in consideration of the discussions and recommendations of the company’s recently established Special Committee for Improving Governance.

    Frankrijk keert Renault-baas de rug toe

    PARIJS (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - De Franse regering stuurt aan op een vertrek van de in opspraak geraakte Renault-topman Carlos Ghosn. De Franse minister van Financiën Bruno la Maire laat weten dat er een nieuwe fase aanbreekt en dat Renault er verstandig aan doet een vervanger voor Ghosn te vinden. De Franse staat is grootaandeelhouder van Renault.

    Ghosn zit al sinds half november in de cel in Japan op verdenking van belastingfraude als baas van Nissan, waar hij eveneens de scepter zwaaide. Zijn arrestatie heeft tot spanningen geleid binnen de alliantie Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi. Nissan en Mitsubishi ontsloegen Ghosn, terwijl Renault eerst bewijzen wil zien van zijn misdaden.

    De leiding van Renault komt naar verwachting de komende dagen bijeen om over de kwestie Ghosn te praten. Volgens bronnen lijkt zijn ontslag onvermijdelijk. Franse vertegenwoordigers zijn afgereisd naar Japan om te praten over de toekomst van de alliantie met Nissan en Mitsubishi.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De Japanse effectenbeurs deed donderdag opnieuw een stapje terug, na een schommelende handelssessie. Een stijging van de Japanse yen ten opzichte van de Amerikaanse dollar zorgde daarbij voor enige koersdruk onder de belangrijke exportbedrijven. Elders in het Verre Oosten gingen de meeste beurzen licht vooruit. De zorgen over de Chinese economie en de onzekerheid rond de brexit hielden de winsten beperkt.

    De Nikkei in Tokio eindigde uiteindelijk met een min van 0,2 procent op 20.402,27 punten. De Japanse banken waren in trek, dankzij de sterke kwartaalresultaten van de Amerikaanse branchegenoten Bank of America en Goldman Sachs. Zo wonnen Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mitsubishi UJF Financial Group en Shinsei Bank tot 1 procent. De effectenhuizen Nomura Holdings en Daiwa Securities Group stegen respectievelijk 4,1 en 1,3 procent.

    De beurzen in Shanghai en Hongkong gingen tussentijds 0,1 procent vooruit. De Chinese centrale bank pompte een dag eerder een recordbedrag van 560 miljard yuan, zo'n 73 miljard euro, in het financiële systeem om de economie te stimuleren en te zorgen voor voldoende liquiditeit tijdens de Chinese nieuwjaarsperiode. De Kospi in Seoul klom 0,1 procent en de All Ordinaries in Sydney sloot 0,3 procent hoger.
