38th day of demonstration of steel workers at Ahvaz

The arrest of representatives of Ahvaz Steel workers and protesters, which started last midnight (Sunday, December 16), continued on Monday, December 17. The number of detainees has reached dozens, the names of 31 of whom have been published so far. At the same time, the mullahs’ regime had stationed repressive forces from the Ministry of Intelligence, riot police and forces affiliated with the IRGC and IRGC intelligence in various sensitive locations in Ahvaz so that workers could not continue their protests. However, the workers, despite the fact that they were surrounded by oppressive forces in some places, continued to demonstrate with slogans such as: “Imprisoned workers must be freed”.

Workers, being threatened by repressive forces, said they would continue their demonstrations until the release of the arrested and achieving their demands.
Workers and laborers from different parts of Iran, including the Tehran Bus Company workers’ syndicate and truck drivers in various parts of Iran, expressed their solidarity with Ahvaz workers and called for the immediate release of the detainees.

Saluting the brave and adamant workers of Ahvaz, the Iranian Resistance described the brutal and mass arrests on Sunday night and on Monday as indication of the frustration of religious fascism in the face of the strikes and protests of workers, and called on all workers and youth and students, especially in Ahvaz and Khuzestan, to support the striking workers of Ahvaz. It also called on international human rights and workers' rights advocates and workers’ unions and syndicates in different countries to support the striking workers who are protesting for their basic rights, and to take necessary measures for the release of the arrestees.

Tokyo Steel keeps January prices unchanged

Reuters reported that Japan’s top electric-arc furnace steelmaker Tokyo Steel Manufacturing Co Ltd announced that it will hold steel product prices steady in January amid a weaker overseas market. For January, prices for steel bars, including rebar, will remain at JPY 69,000 a tonne, H Beams at JPY 89,000 and heavy plates at JPY 83,000. The company raised prices for its heavy plates in December by 2.5% but kept prices unchanged for other products

Tokyo Steel MD Mr Kiyoshi Imamura told reporters “Domestic demand remains firm, but we are keeping product prices steady as the overseas steel market has fallen quite sharply. We expect China’s steel prices are in the bottom range and will start recovering early next year given strong infrastructure demand in the local market.”

GMS Market Commentary on Shipbreaking in Turkey in Week 50 - LIMPING AWAY!

The Turkish market suffered another setback this week as local steel plate prices declined further by about USD 15/MT, winding down the week at region USD 290/MT levels. Even though the Turkish Lira has remained steady around the TRY 5.3X mark against the U.S. Dollar, the declining plate prices across consecutive weeks single-handedly dragged local offerings down by about USD 10/MT this week.

As subcontinent offerings remain comparatively stable this week, the marginally wider price gap with the subcontinent markets will only make it that much harder for Aliaga Recyclers to snag market tonnage opening up in the area.

If it wasn’t for offshore / green units departing European waters, Turkey would likely have suffered a tonnage drought for much of the last two quarters. As such, we do expect this market to remain quiet for the rest of December (and likely into 2019).

Shared victory in SmartSteel Innovation Challenge - SSAB

A shared victory between Fraunhofer Institute IPM from Germany and Luleå University of Technology from Sweden, who both came up with ideas on how to trace steel products by using the materials own characteristics. That was the result of the SmartSteel Innovation Challenge 2018. The SmartSteel Innovation Challenge was launched in September as a mutual initiative from Sandvik Materials Technology and SSAB. The idea was to use open innovation in order to find new ways to create future fingerprints for steel products.

The challenge attracted 26 applications in total, of which seven finalists were selected to pitch their ideas to an expert jury in the final round in Stockholm in December. The teams came from across the world, with representatives from South Africa, Sweden, Germany and Finland.

In the end, the jury decided on two winners, who came up with similar ideas, both very much in line with the SmartSteel vision. The winning teams were Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM from Germany and Luleå University of Technology from Sweden.

The challenge is part of the SmartSteel project, initiated within the Swedish national strategic innovation programs PiiA and Metallic Materials. It was organized together with Nordic innovation consultancy Spinverse, a firm specialized in driving open innovation ecosystems, and turning radical innovations to business.

The other five finalists were a team of Nortal Oy (Kari Juntunen) and University of Oulu (Jukka Kömi) from Finland; Cajo Technologies Oy (Niko Karsikas) from Finland; Altran Sverige AB (Steve Brown) from Sweden; Mitas Corporation (Kyle Parker) from South Africa and a team of Oulu University (Aki Sorsa) and Tampere University of Technology (Suvi Santa-aho) from Finland.

GMS Market Commentary on Shipbreaking in China in Week 50 - WINDING DOWN!

As the Chinese ship recycling industry winds down on international tonnage, it was unsurprising to see no deals concluded for yet another week into the only remaining yard that is open for business. Zhoushan yard in the Changjiang area (close to Shanghai) has a very small quota of LDT (less than 2 - 3,000 LDT) left to take in before the year-end and it is unlikely this will be used up or renewed on even smaller LDT green / geographically positioned units.

Prices remain desperately poor, stranded in the low USD 100s/LDT and as such, even less sophisticated South East Asian scrap yards reportedly hold the edge over China at present.

GMS Market Commentary on Shipbreaking in Bangladesh in Week 50 - NEGATIVE SPIRAL!

It was a quieter week in terms of new fixtures in Bangladesh, as certain Cash Buyers were frustratingly trying to offload some of their expensive inventory that was concluded during the previous peak of the market – albeit at the far lower offerings of today and much below their breakeven levels. Even though local steel plate prices recorded a marginal improvement this week, their negative spirals endured of late has alarmed Chittagong Buyers sufficiently, to abstain from much of the recent activity.

Finally, the elections taking place on December 30th are causing some concern locally and despite the fact that there is no change expected to the ruling party, end Users are operating rather nervously when it comes to making offers (especially on the larger LDT units), with only smaller units garnering much of the local interest for the time being, in case there is a surprise outcome in the elections and in light of the ongoing USD shortage in the country that has led to an abundance of L/C difficulties.

One such case in point saw the smaller General Cargo vessel ORANGE WIND (2,340 LDT) fetch a decent USD 435/LT LDT on a delivered Bangladesh basis.

Iran's MSC in the Vanguard of Regional Steelmaking

Financial Tribune reported that Iran's steel industry has always played a significant role in global, regional and national economies, brining high revenues for countries and helping build strong economies with sustainable growth. Yet, according to a board member of Iran's biggest steelmaker, Mr Bahman Ayyarrezaei, one of most important challenges facing the global steel industry is the high production capacity surplus to low consumption. Mr Ayyarrezaei has over 30 years of experience in Iran's steel industry, having served as chief executives of major steel/mining companies and advisor to the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade as well as the Industries and Mines Commission of the Iranian Parliament. He told Financial Tribune in an exclusive interview that "Global steel production currently revolves around 1.67 billion tonnes while the real production capacity exceeds 2 billion tonnes. Developing countries have been investing more in the steel industry, which will eventually lead to an increase in production capacity. Accordingly, the increase in capacity is not in proportion with the increase in real production. Environmental concerns are another issue the steel industry is dealing with. Many steel producing companies are still dealing with environmental issues and those who have managed to solve these issues have paid enormous costs, which inevitably affects end prices.”

Concerns over slowing global economic growth have raised concerns for the steel industry as well. Naturally, if global economic growth is jeopardized, steel industry will be harmed as well.

Emergence of alternatives to steel is also another big thread facing the industry, the expert told us. For instance, American automotive and energy company Tesla is establishing a car manufacturing company to depend heavily on aluminum for the production of different parts. If their plans become operational or other companies find alternatives to steel products, local steel industries will face a serious threat.

GMS Market Commentary on Shipbreaking in Pakistan in Week 50 - INERT INDUSTRY!

With its weakening levels and recent currency depreciation, Pakistan has largely remained out of the game as local Recyclers have struggled to secure any vessels whatsoever (despite a plethora of unsold units being proposed from various Cash Buyer hands). In what seems like the only positive news from this market in the recent past, the recommencement of high rise building projects this week should give some impetus into a presently inert industry. Yet, end Buyers have continued to try and find one excuse after another, in order to avoid tabling sensible offers and this has now extended to dreaded renegotiations on the waterfront for any expensive vessels arriving locally.

If these tactics continue, it is sure to be a quiet end to the year for Pakistan, with local recycling yards virtually empty since the market’s reopening on tankers back in April.

Dillinger steel for the Kienlesberg Bridge in Ulm

Dillinger steel is once again playing a key “supporting role” as the Kienlesberg Bridge in Ulm prepares to officially open to traffic next Sunday, 9 December 2018, after a full three years of construction. The elegantly curved bridge contains 1,750 metric tons of Dillinger heavy plate. At its christening in September, the principle builder, Stadtwerke-Ulm-Traffic Managing Director André Dillmann, described the bridge as potential competition for the Ulm cathedral.

The 270-meter-long white bridge for tram, pedestrian and bicycle traffic is an essential component of the extension of the Ulm tramway. It crosses above the heavily frequented tracks of Ulm’s main railway station and thus connects the city center of Ulm with the Science City located to the northwest. Special attention was paid to making the bridge enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists. For example, seating is integrated into the niches of the truss of the main girder. The bridge offers an impressive view of the railway area and beyond to the old town, with the Ulm cathedral as another eye-catching sight.

The bridge caused significant headaches during its planning and implementation phase due to its urban setting. The planners faced both historical and geographical challenges here: The architecture of the new bridge needed to harmonize with the buildings in its immediate surroundings, especially with the Neutor Bridge, a listed monument built in 1907. The planners also struggled with extremely restricted space conditions. The construction time budget presented an additional challenge since the bridge had to be built while the railways continued to operate.

The solution: steel. The material enabled the use of a “feed” solution in which the bridge support was preassembled in individual segments, which were then moved piece by piece into their final positions using the “incremental launch” method. As a result, the Ulm Kienlesberg Bridge consists of around 60 individual elements. Most of the steel for the bridge came from Saarland. Dillinger supplied 1,750 metric tons of heavy plate for the bridge in widths of up to 4.80 meters.

NLMK Group to boost second-largest Lipetsk furnace capacity by 8pct

NLMK Group, an international steel company, has embarked on a large-scale reconstruction of Blast Furnace No. 6 (BF-6) at its Lipetsk site. The project will enable an 8% increase in BF capacity to 3.4 million tonnes of pig iron per year, significantly improve its environmental performance, and extend its interrepair cycle by 50% to 25 years. Investment in the upgrade will exceed RUB 34 billion.

Currently, work is underway to install new blast air heaters and dedusting systems, assemble main units and steel structures. These works will be completed before the shutdown of the blast furnace, scheduled for May 2019. During the 130-day stoppage, the furnace will be dismantled and rebuilt from prefabricated modules.

Konstantin Lagutin, NLMK Group Vice President, Investment Projects, said “Leading Russian and international engineering companies, MPE and technology suppliers have been brought on board to work on this largest investment project to be executed at the Lipetsk site over the past two years. We will end up with a more productive and efficient blast furnace with improved environmental performance. The upgrade of the dedusting system, for instance, will reduce the dust content in the air almost 10-fold. We are not just replacing an obsolete furnace with a new one: the project will make a significant contribution to the overall increase in steel output as part of the new strategic cycle.”

Trinecke Zelezarny awards blooming mill FAC to SMS group

Following the commissioning of its new blooming mill stand, the Czech steel company T?inecké železárny has awarded the final acceptance certificate (FAC) to SMS group. The objectives of the upgrade were to maintain and ensure the operational reliability and plant availability, to create the necessary process stability and to improve quality, tolerances and yield. Due to the advanced age of the plant this upgrade was an essential investment into the future of T?inecké železárny.

The scope of the upgrade included a new ultra-rigid two-high reversing blooming mill stand with shifting unit and hook-type tilter. The blooming mill is used for the preshaping of intermediates – also of high-alloy steels – made from continuously cast material up to 525 millimeters in diameter and ingots up to a weight of 5.3 tons. Moreover, it is also providing the feedstock material for the existing rail, bar and wire rod production at T?inecké železárny, which shows the importance of this critical modernization project. Another core element of this order is the new hydraulic bloom shear with a shear force of around 1,000 tons. The shear is driven by an innovative and energy-efficient variable-speed pump (VSP).

T?inecké železárny is part of the Moravia Steel Group and has a broad product portfolio: rails, wire rod, bar steel including SBQ, seamless tubes

Steelmakers to benefit from Brazilian macroeconomic situation in 2019 - Moody's

Brazil's steelmakers are likely to benefit in 2019 from stability in the country's macroeconomics indicators, automotive sector growth and an improvement in housing starts, according to a report by Moody's Investors Service. The stability of Brazil's macroeconomics indicators will support growth in major steel consuming industries, while a stronger Real will help ease costs for US dollar-priced raw materials such as iron ore, Moody's said in an 2019 outlook, foreseeing a moderate recovery in demand for steel. It said that "Growth is likely despite risk of political uncertainty under a new government, adding there will be further opportunities as a result of greater infrastructure/heavy construction investment amid an improved business environment in Brazil.”

The credit ratings agency sees a more favorable import price relationship and a low threat of significant growth in steel imports as further positive factors.

Nevertheless, Moody's forecasts Brazilian steel exports will remain low due to increased US protectionism plus "stronger competition from other producing countries such as China and Turkey."

Moody's sees Gerdau's credit quality improving and benefiting from scale, diversification and financial flexibility, while Usiminas' operating performance is expected to remain strong in 2019 "based on cost-cutting efforts" and "recovery in the automotive industry," Moody's said in the report.

However, an improvement in CSN's credit quality is dependent on further asset sales, or other efforts to improve capital structure, reduce short-term liquidity risks.
