    Volkswagen to make Zwickau plant top-performing electric car factory

    The Volkswagen brand is moving forward with its electric offensive and gradually creating the production capacity needed for building more than 1 million electric cars per year throughout the world from 2025. The Group’s largest and highest- performance electric car plant is currently being created in Zwickau: in future, up to 330,000 electric models per year are to roll off the production line there – more than at any other plant of the Volkswagen Group. As the first high-volume automaker in the world, Volkswagen is therefore converting an entire plant from the internal combustion engine to e-mobility. Currently, the Golf and Golf Estate are produced at Zwickau. At the end of 2019, in slightly more than a year, the production of the ID.1), Volkswagen’s first electric model based on the new modular electric toolkit (MEB), is due to start at Zwickau. In the final stage of development, six electric models of three Group brands are to be produced at the plant from 2021 onwards.

    Mr Thomas Ulbrich Volkswagen Brand Board Member responsible for E-Mobility said that “The start of production of the ID.1) in a good 12 months’ time will herald a new era for Volkswagen – comparable with the first Beetle or the first Golf. We intend to take e-mobility out of its niche and to make the electric car affordable for millions of people. Efficient, modern production facilities will be the key. This is why we are bundling electric car production across the Group’s brands at Zwickau. In one year, this plant will become the starting point for our global electric offensive. As the first MEB plant in the Volkswagen Group, Zwickau will therefore play a pioneering role for this future-oriented technology.”

    Green production
    With the ID.1) produced in Zwickau, Volkswagen intends to deliver to customers for the first time a vehicle produced with an entirely neutral CO2 balance over the entire delivery and production chain. In the production process, the emission of CO2 is to be avoided or reduced as far as possible. Climate protection measures will be taken to compensate for unavoidable emissions. The CO2 avoidance measures in the production of the ID.1) also include the energy-intensive production of battery cells. It has been agreed that our suppliers will use “green” power from renewable sources for the production of the cells. This will be a major lever for further improving the life cycle analysis of the electric car.

    Power supplies at the Zwickau plant were already changed over to 100 percent eco-power in 2017. By the start of production of the ID.1) , the remaining emissions from the compact cogeneration plant at the facility and the entire supply chain will be compensated for by climate protection projects certified to officially approved standards. Mr Thomas Ulbrich said that “With our electric cars we want to make a substantial contribution to climate protection. The decisive factor is that electric cars will be both built and used sustainably. The ID.1) will be a model for sustainable mobility.”

    Volkswagen brand reaches milestone of 30 million deliveries in China

    Volkswagen is speeding up its activities in China, re- energizing the brand under its Move Forward initiative. The brand’s product portfolio was strengthened with no less than 9 new models in 2018. Speaking at Auto Guangzhou 2018, Mr Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Brand China, said that “We reached a fantastic milestone this November, as we delivered the 30 millionth Volkswagen a Touareg to a customer in China. And to remain the number one choice for Chinese car buyers, as we have been for many years, our product offensive will continue in 2019.”

    As one of the pioneering automotive brands in China, Volkswagen delivered some 2,000 cars to Chinese customers in 1985, in a market that totalled 5,100 vehicles. By 1992, cumulative Volkswagen China deliveries had reached 100,000, and in 1997 Volkswagen’s total number of customers exceeded one million. The 5 and 10 millionth customers were greeted in 2006 and 2011, respectively, while in 2015 the 20 millionth Volkswagen found its way to China’s roads. Just three years later, in 2018, another 10 million Volkswagen vehicles have been delivered: in November, the 30 millionth Chinese car buyer chose a Volkswagen. Mr Wöllenstein said that “This is a unique occasion, and a unique vote of confidence from all our Chinese customers over the years.”

    With its joint venture partners, FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, the brand is committed to providing more choice to meet the varying needs of Chinese consumers. Volkswagen announced the introduction of another 5 models in 2019, including 3 SUVs. Mr Wöllenstein continued that “Together with our joint ventures, we also will step up our efforts with our NEV offensive in 2019 – introducing 3 locally-produced battery-electric versions of well-known Volkswagen models. We will also introduce one more locally-produced PHEV and the Touareg PHEV from Volkswagen Import.”

    Volkswagen increases spending on new tech by USD 11 billion to speed overhaul

    Volkswagen Group is significantly raising investment plans for the next five years in the race to keep up with the shift to electric and self-driving cars, as well as new services in connected cars. VW will spend 44 billion euros (USD 50 billion) through 2023, part of a push for now more than 50 full-electric models by 2025. This is 10 billion euros more compared with last year’s planning round.

    The company's supervisory board voted on Friday far-reaching capital spending plans to begin mass production of electric vehicles in Europe, the most radical strategy shift since VW's diesel cheating scandal in 2015.

    VW said it could build up to 15 million electric cars over several years on its new MEB electric vehicle platform. Management this week outlined plans for converting Germany car plants in Zwickau, Emden and Hanover to build electric cars, providing job guarantees to workers until 2028.

    The I.D. Neo hatchback, the first of VW brand's I.D. family of affordable electric cars, is due to roll off the production line in Zwickau in 2019, as the plant ramps up to a production capacity of 330,000 electric vehicles.

    Mass producing electric cars will help VW reduce the cost to the same level as current diesel vehicles, VW Group CEO Mr Herbert Diess said at a news conference in Wolfsburg, VW's home town. He said that "Very emotional vehicles, high economies of scale, I think we will be the most profitable company in electric vehicles.”

    VW cancels shipments from Portuguese T-Roc plant over port strike

    Volkswagen Group has been forced to cancel seven car shipments from the Portuguese port of Setubal as local stevedores strike over working conditions. Thousands of cars from a nearby plant that builds the new T-Roc SUV, have piled up at the port and at the Palmela plant since the strike began on Nov. 5.

    VW said in a statement the ship's loading on Thursday was made possible thanks to guarantees provided by the government and the port operator. It said no alternative shipping route was capable of handling its production volume.

    The plant makes more than 880 cars per day, including the T-Roc SUV and the Seat Alhambra and VW Sharan minivans, according to Automotive News Europe assembly plant map. Palmela is Portugal's single largest exporter.

    Volkswagen confirms Passat production will move to Skoda plant

    Volkswagen Group confirmed it will transfer production of the Passat to a Skoda plant in the Czech Republic from Germany. VW's factory in Emden, Germany, currently builds the Passat for European markets. Shifting production to Skoda's plant in Kvasiny, Czech Republic, will free capacity in Emden for models from VW's new ID family of full electric cars. The Passat will be built alongside the Skoda Superb starting in 2023, VW CEO Herbert Diess said at a press event here on Friday, confirming an earlier report in the Handelsblatt newspaper.

    Besides the Superb, the Kvasiny factory builds the Karoq and Kodiaq, and Seat Ateca SUVs.

    Karoq and Ateca production will be transferred to a new multi-brand plant, VW said. The group is looking for a location for the factory in eastern Europe, the automaker said.

    The Passat has kept its spot as Europe's top-selling mass-market midsize car, although sales fell 5.6 percent to 127,325 in the first nine months, according to JATO Dynamics market researchers. The Superb was No. 2, with sales falling 8.4 percent to 56,399.

    Beursblik: Volkswagen uitmuntend gepositioneerd in elektrisch rijden

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Volkswagen zal de meest winstgevende producent van elektrische auto's worden, gezien de schaalgrootte en mondiale spreiding van de onderneming. Dit stelden analisten van Morgan Stanley in een rapport.

    De marktvorsers van de Amerikaanse zakenbank vonden dinsdag dat er geen enkele andere autobouwer zoveel op dit terrein in het werk stelt als Volkswagen.

    Zij verwachten dat het bedrijf rond 2025 een voorsprong heeft van twee tot drie jaar op zijn naaste concurrenten. De inspanningen die Volkswagen doet, zullen volgens Morgan Stanley in eerste instantie wel op de winstontwikkeling van Volkswagen drukken.

    De doelstellingen van de autobouwer houden volgens de marktvorsers overigens geen rekening met een verzwakking van de vraag in China, terwijl de markt juist sterk let op de toekomstige winstontwikkeling.

    Morgan Stanley wees dinsdag op de afname in China van de vraag naar auto's in september en oktober met tien procent.

    De doelstellingen van Volkswagen voor 2020 laten geen normalisering van de zeer hoge EBIT-marges in China zien, waarschuwden de analisten.

    Volkswagen haalde afgelopen kwartaal bijna veertig procent van zijn omzet uit China, aldus de Amerikaanse zakenbank.

    Het aandeel Volkswagen noteerde dinsdag 0,7 procent hoger.

    VW to appeal German court ruling ordering diesel car buyback

    Associate Press reported that German automaker Volkswagen will appeal a court ruling that orders it to buy back a six-year-old diesel vehicle at the original sales price. In a statement Friday, Volkswagen said it expects an appeals court to overturn the verdict issued last week by judges in the southern German city of Augsburg. The company has paid billions of dollars in fines and compensation to diesel car owners since 2015 for cheating on emissions tests.

    But until the Augsburg verdict, courts in Germany had deducted a usage fee when ordering VW to buy back affected diesel cars.

    In their ruling, judges in Augsburg said VW had acted "immorally" by manipulating the emissions control software in its cars in order to increase sales.

    VW and Skoda dispute leadership of new eastern European plant

    VW brand's German union is fighting with Skoda over leadership of a factory that parent Volkswagen Group plans to open in eastern Europe. VW Group CEO Herbert Diess said on November 18 that the automaker is looking for a location for a new multi-brand plant in eastern Europe to start production after 2022.

    The need for the factory arises because VW is converting its Emden factory in Germany to build electric vehicles and shifting production of the Passat midsize car to Skoda's lower-cost factory in Kvasiny, which builds the related Superb. The new plant will build the Skoda Karoq and Seat Ateca SUVs that are currently produced in Kvasiny.

    Locations in Bulgaria and Romania are currently being examined for the plant, which will create 4,000 to 5,000 new jobs, sources told Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe.

    VW brand's works council has told management it wants the factory to be controlled by the core VW passenger cars business.

    VW Supervisory Board Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch said the company has not yet made a decision on which brand will lead the factory. He told Automobilwoche that "Skoda is one of the options.”

    Sources said that Skoda's home base of the Czech Republic is not in the running because of its high wage costs.

    Another option under consideration is to convert in an engine plant to build cars. VW's engine plants in Polkowice, Poland, and Gyor, Hungary, are potential candidates.

    SNAM inks deal with Volkswagen for gas powered cars

    Reuters reported that Italian gas group Snam has a deal with Seat, a unit of German car maker Volkswagen , to boost the use of natural gas to power cars. Snam and Seat will explore ways to develop fuel station networks and create new products. Seat President Luca de Meo said that "For SEAT, one out of every five vehicles sold in Italy uses compressed natural gas, adding that the deal would "further enhance the development of CNG in Italy and export this success case to other countries."

    Italy has become the leading market for CNG technology, accounting for 55 percent of all vehicles sold in Europe this year powered by the fuel.

    Volkswagen to boost marketing efficiency by 2020

    The Volkswagen brand plans to improve its marketing efficiency by about 30 percent by 2020 at the same time as keeping its marketing budget approximately stable at EUR 1.5 billion. The digital share of the media mix is to grow to almost 50 percent by 2020. In 2015, the share was about 25 percent.     The changes in marketing will focus on four main areas. In the product area, the key topics in 2019 will be the eighth-generation Golf and the ID. Both cars will be fully connected, also allowing direct digital services for the customers in the car. In addition, Volkswagen intends to set up new digital platforms such as the new online sales platform for the digital “We” services such as the digital delivery service “We Deliver”.     De drone-auto-combinatie kreeg de naam Pop.Up Next. Het concept bestaat uit een plat, autonoom rijdend elektrisch onderstel, waarin een capsule wordt geklikt met plek voor vier personen. Op het dak bevindt zich een koppelsysteem voor een drone. Deze kan zich op zijn beurt vastklikken aan de capsule, waarna files en andere grootstedelijke problemen zoals verkeerslichten en openstaande bruggen kunnen worden omzeild.

    Op de plek van aankomst staat dan weer een ander Audi-onderstel klaar om de weg te vervolgen. In de RAI werd gevlogen met een model in een schaal van 1:4, maar in werkelijkheid moet een echte 130 kilometer kunnen vliegen en 50 kilometer kunnen rijden met elektrische aandrijving.

    Volkswagen expands electric lineup with big, small cargo haulers

    Automotive News reported that Volkswagen is signaling the broad range of its coming electric vehicle portfolio with a pair of production-intent commercial concepts aimed at delivering cargo under battery power. The ID Buzz Cargo concept is the largest vehicle to come from the automaker's flexible MEB electric vehicle platform, using an expanded version of its retro-styled electric microbus concept with a large rear cargo area instead of seats and a larger battery capable of achieving up to 340 miles of range.

    The slab-sided I.D. Buzz Cargo is powered by a 201-hp rear-mounted electric motor and features roof-mounted solar panels to add up to 9.3 miles of range per day, Volkswagen says.

    The I.D. Buzz Cargo, a callback to the automaker's original Transporter commercial vehicle, "could be launched as a production vehicle in Europe as early as 2022," Volkswagen said.

    The automaker did not express any intention to sell the I.D. Buzz Cargo in the US, where Volkswagen doesn't market a commercial vehicle portfolio.

    On the other end of the size spectrum, Volkswagen showed a three-wheeled, battery-assisted electric bike that it says can deliver packages in pedestrian-only city centers with an attached cargo box mounted between the front two wheels.

    WASHINGTON (AFN/RTR) - De Duitse automaker Volkswagen gaat in de VS mogelijk auto's bouwen in de fabrieken van branchegenoot Ford. Volgens VW-topman Herbert Diess wordt momenteel gewerkt aan een pact met Ford. Hij zei dit na zijn bezoek aan het Witte Huis. Daar sprake de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump met topbestuurders van VW en branchegenoten BMW en Daimler.

    Volgens Diess overweegt VW ook om een extra fabriek in de VS te realiseren. De gesprekken met Ford zijn volgens hem vergevorderd. Daarbij wordt mogelijk gemikt op een wereldwijde alliantie die ook goed nieuws zal betekenen voor de Amerikaanse auto-industrie.

    Trump hoopte tijdens de bijeenkomst in Washington de Duitse automakers te overtuigen meer productie in de VS op te zetten. Hij dreigde eerder met importtarieven op auto's en auto-onderdelen.

    Dat zou het bedrijf in directe concurrentie brengen met Elon Musk’s Tesla. Vorige maand kondigde Volkswagen plannen aan voor een elektrisch voertuig van € 20.000 en zei dat het drie van zijn Duitse fabrieken ging verbouwen om zich te concentreren op elektrische auto’s.

    Volkswagen is ‘s werelds grootste autofabrikant en verkocht vorig jaar zo’n 10,7 miljoen voertuigen. Het bedrijf is van plan 50 miljoen elektrische auto’s te maken, maar heeft nog geen tijdlijn voor dat doel gegeven. De productie van elektrische VW’s begint tegen het einde van dit jaar. Tegen 2022 verwacht het 22 modellen beschikbaar te hebben.

    Volkswagen is niet de enige. Bijna alle Duitse merken zijn bezig met een transitie naar elektrische mobiliteit. Dit zal in Duitsland op lange termijn 114.00 banen kosten op een totaal van 800.000, zo blijkt uit een studie van het IAB, het onderzoeksinstituut van het Duitse tewerkstellingsagentschap. Omdat de productie van elektrische motoren minder arbeidsintensief is, zijn er volgens het IAB minder arbeidskrachten nodig.

    WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Volkswagen ligt naar eigen zeggen nog altijd op koers voor een recordjaar qua leveringen. Daarmee zou de Duitse automaker tegenwind van onder meer strengere emissiestandaarden, de verschuiving naar elektrisch rijden en de ban op sommige diesels het hoofd weten te bieden.

    De autoverkopen van de fabrikant stegen in de eerste elf maanden van dit jaar, op jaarbasis, met 1,2 procent tot een recordaantal van 5,7 miljoen auto's. Om het recordniveau van 2017 te evenaren, moet Volkswagen in december nog 530.000 auto's verkopen. Volgens de automaker moet dit mogelijk zijn.

    In China, de grootste automarkt wereldwijd, bracht het bedrijf dit jaar wel minder auto's aan de man. Volgens Volkswagen blijven de gevolgen van de handelsoorlog tussen de VS en China ernstig. De spanningen zorgen voor grote terughoudendheid bij autokopers. Binnen Europa en in de VS sleet Volkswagen meer auto's. Verder boert de onderneming vooral goed in opkomende markten als Brazilië en Rusland.

    Eigen merk

    Circa de helft van de leveringen van Volkswagen zijn auto's van het eigen merk. Verder vallen ook merken als Audi, Seat, Skoda en Porsche onder de VW-vlag. Bij het eigen merk mikt Volkswagen op stevige kostenverlagingen om marges te stutten. De winstmarge zal al tegen 2022 minstens 6 procent bedragen. Dat is drie jaar eerder in vergelijking met een eerdere aankondiging.

    Volkswagen stelde ook bij het eigen merk als doel om tegen 2020 structureel 3 miljard euro zuiniger te werken. Door onder meer te snijden in het personeelsbestand zullen de kosten eind dit jaar al met 2,2 miljard euro zijn teruggebracht. Ook daarmee lijkt Volkswagen op koers te liggen, al benadrukt de leiding van Volkswagen dat er nog de nodige inspanningen nodig zijn.

    Volkswagen might use Ford manufacturing capacity in US

    Auto News reported that Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess said the automaker was building an alliance with Ford and that they might use the US automaker's plants to build cars. Mr Diess after a meeting at the White House said that VW is also considering building a second car plant. We are in quite advanced negotiations and dialog with Ford to really build up a global automotive alliance, which also would strengthen the American automotive industry.”

    The automakers said in October that Ford and VW said on June 19 they would explore a strategic alliance and they agreed to a memorandum of understanding at the time. Talks further intensified this fall.

    A Ford spokeswoman said in a statement that "Our MOU with VW covers conversations about potential collaborations across a number of areas. It is premature to share additional details at this time."

    The automakers have said previously they are talking about potential collaborations across a number of areas.

    Mr Diess also said VW is in advanced negotiations in Tennessee, where the company already has a plant in Chattanooga, about boosting its U.S. capacity, but that there could be other options. A decision could be made in early 2019, he said.

    Volkswagen brand to speed up operating return

    The Volkswagen brand is to significantly improve its earnings performance in the coming years in order to finance investments in future technologies from its own resources. To this end, the model portfolio is being streamlined and the number of variants reduced. At the same time, productivity at the plants is to be increased and the platform orientation for vehicle production extended. Optimizing material costs is to contribute significantly to achieving the target return – without detracting from product substance. Administration processes will become even leaner. Mr Ralf Brandstätter, the brand’s Chief Operating Officer responsible for day-to-day business said that “We must force the pace of our transformation and become more efficient and agile. We cannot let up in our efforts and must realize further substantial improvements. What we have achieved so far is still not enough.”

    In total, the Volkswagen brand will be investing over EUR 11 billion in e- mobility, digitalization, autonomous driving and mobility services from 2019 to 2023, of which over EUR 9 billion will be spent on Volkswagen’s electrification offensive.

    The brand currently has two fully-electric cars in its program. This number will increase to around 20 by 2025, with planned production set at over one million units. Work on converting the Zwickau plant to be run exclusively as an electric mobility site is already underway, and in addition the plants in Emden and Hanover will switch to the production of electric vehicles from 2022. Collectively, these three sites will become Europe’s largest e-production network. Two electric vehicle plants are also currently taking shape in Anting and Foshan in China, with production scheduled to commence in 2020. For North America, the brand plans to make a decision on a production location for electric vehicles soon.

    With the fully-electric ID.1 made in Zwickau, where the order process features pre-booking for the first time, Volkswagen is putting a new generation of vehicles on the road that also sets standards in digitalization and connectivity. “With the ID., the dawning of the e-mobility era and connectivity for our brand becomes tangible for our customers, too. The ID. will be the first fully-connected, fully-electric car and will be a symbol of the ‘New Volkswagen’”, Board Member for Sales Jürgen Stackmann said. Volkswagen will also be investing strongly in digitalization. The Volkswagen Automotive Cloud developed together with partners lays the groundwork for offering an ever-growing range of digital services in fully- connected vehicles. The aim is to create the world’s largest automotive ecosystem.

    In order to finance the enormous future investments, the Volkswagen brand will have to realize even higher cost savings than previously planned. Dr Arno Antlitz CFO explained that “We have therefore defined a bundle of measures to improve profitability that will safeguard the full implementation of the pact for the future while also supplementing the topics of the pact and setting the right course for 2025.”
