    The 100 MW Kathu concentrated solar power plant with molten salt storage system accomplished first synchronization

    SENER and ACCIONA Industrial have reached a critical milestone in the construction project of Kathu Solar Park. Namely, the successful synchronization was achieved on 18 November, electric power was generated and transferred on the National grid complying with all expected parameters to ensure the supply of power starts and end users can consume reliable energy once the plant is operation.

    The Kathu Solar Park CSP Plant, which will provide clean and reliable energy to 179,000 homes is equipped with a molten salt storage system that will allow the plant to keep producing electricity 4.5 hours steadily in absence of solar radiation and guarantee dispatchable energy generation to meet on demand needs. Likewise, the use of SENERtrough®-2 collectors, a parabolic trough technology designed and patented by SENER, will aim at improving efficiency of the plant.

    Mr Siyabonga Mbanjwa, SENER Southern Africa Regional Managing Director, said that “With the successful first synchronization at Kathu Solar Park we are heading into the final stages of the construction and commissioning phase of the project that will ultimately reach the COD (commercial operation date) for the plant in the next couple of months. Once fully operational, the plant will provide clean energy to the local community of the John Taole District Municipality, the Northern Cape Province and South Africa as a whole. The use of molten salt as thermal energy storage system will allow Kathu Solar Park to operate in a cost-effective manner, storing the generated energy from the sun, producing and dispatching electricity, in absence of solar radiation, to satisfy South Africa’s peak demand. At SENER, our aim is to provide the most innovative technology. It is such innovation that enabled SENER to not only provide clean energy but to ensure that it is also reliable and sustainable.”

    Mr Francisco García Bueno, Project Director at ACCIONA Industrial, said that “For the EPC consortium, plant synchronisation is one of the most important final milestones that will enable us to complete a process that began in 2016, and we achieved it with success and the greatest guarantees. The participation of local companies in the construction of Kathu, as well as Spanish companies, has been key to reaching this milestone. The principle that governs the entire project is that of sustainability in all areas: economic, social and environmental. That is why all activities are planned with the rigour and detail that both Kathu Solar Park and the John Taole District Municipality community demand of us.”

    Construction on the unit began in May 2016, and it is expected to be completed in early 2019. During this phase, around 1,200 jobs are being created impacting positively the local employment prospects. In addition to this, it is estimated that the Kathu Solar Park will save six million tons of CO2 over 20 years, and it will foster more local economic development through several project. These include a SENER and ACCIONA´s fund of R29 300 000, managed by Kelebogile Trust, for the local community that will benefit the area around the municipality of John Taolo Gaetsewe in Northern Cape, in addition to subcontracting other services to local businesses.

    Drax starts pilot of Europe first bioenergy carbon capture project

    Reuters reported that Britain's Drax has started a pilot project to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions at its biomass plant, the first of its kind in Europe. Drax said that Carbon capture and storage involves the capture of emissions from power plants and industry to allow them to be stored underground or compressed in containers to be used for industrial applications such as making drinks fizzy.

    According to a recent UN report, the technology is also likely to be needed to help limit a rise in global temperatures at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

    Drax said using the technology at the plant in North Yorkshire, England, that burns biomass wood pellets, often made from compressed sawdust could enable the company to operate the world's first carbon negative power station.

    When coupled with CCS, the overall process of generating electricity from biomass removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it releases, the company said.

    Drax said in a statement that "If successful, the six-month pilot project will capture a tonne of CO2 (carbon dioxide) a day from the gases produced when renewable power is generated.”

    Drax said the CO2 will initially be stored on site but that eventually it will seek to find a use for the gas, such as in the drinks industry which earlier this year was hit with a CO2 shortage.

    Britain has a target to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent compared with 1990 levels by 2050, but has asked its climate change experts to advise on whether it should set a date to meet a net zero emissions target.

    A report by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in October warned not meeting the goal to limit rising temperatures at 1.5 degrees would mean huge changes to the world such as rising sea levels, life-threatening heat and loss of species.

    Nederlanders kopen liever zonnepanelen dan een nieuwe keuken. Dat is de uitkomst uit het bewonerspanel van servicebedrijf Feenstra.

    Bewoners vinden duurzaamheid belangrijk, maar onzekerheid over techniek en overheidsbeleid houdt mensen volgens het onderzoek tegen te investeren. Mochten mensen het geld hebben, dan zou zij eerder investeren in zonnepanelen (1e keus), een warmtepomp (2e keus) of zonneboiler (3e keus) dan in een nieuwe keuken, slaapkamer of tuin.

    De meeste Nederlanders, 63 procent, zijn bereid zelf opgewekte energie met anderen te delen. Bijna de helft van de bewoners geeft aan de investering in een duurzamere woning nog te hoog te vinden, 41 procent vindt dat de overheid eerst duidelijke kaders moet aangeven.

    Met de resultaten van het onderzoek wil Feenstra haar dienstverlening verbeteren zodat meer mensen hun woning van duurzame energie kunnen voorzien, hun energieverbruik kunnen verminderen en hun energiekosten kunnen verlagen.

    The fate of Poland's coal mines up for discussion at climate talks - Mr Jaworowski

    Associated Press reported that electronics salesman Mr Leszek Jaworowski says he can't discuss Poland's coal mining with his father. They end up at loggerheads, just like many families in the southern mining region of Silesia. Unlike his father Edward, Mr. Jaworowski defied the area's centuries-old tradition and didn't become a miner. The 42-year-old believes it's time for Poland, heavily dependent on coal, to move away from the dangerous, costly, and polluting industry. But to those working in the mines, coal lies at the very core of Silesia's identity, despite the huge safety and health hazards that it brings.

    Jaworowski Jr, said that "Coal mines should be shut, Silesia doesn't need them anymore. They're destroying the region, the air, and the people. The heaps of money pumped into maintaining them should be better used for creating jobs in innovative and clean industries like IT."

    Not everyone thinks that way. Tomasz Mlynarczyk, 43, who operates heavy extraction machinery at the Wujek mine in Katowice, thinks coal is a "treasure." He said that A 'circular economy' appeals to cities wanting to reduce carbon footprints "If there was no coal there would be no jobs," he said. "If we close the mines, then everything around goes bankrupt – shops and other firms that produce and deliver goods to the mines."

    Perhaps surprisingly, Poland has chosen to host this year's global climate summit in Silesia's main city, Katowice.

    The two-week conference starting Dec. 2 will see governments, scientists, and campaigners from around the world haggle over how to implement the Paris climate accord. The 2015 agreement set a goal of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, ideally no more than 1.5 C, an effort that experts say will require sharp cuts in carbon emissions that can only be achieved by ending coal-fired power plants in the coming decades.

    To spur the negotiators, a group of Greenpeace activists climbed a 590-foot smokestack on Tuesday at Europe's largest lignite power plant in Belchatow, central Poland, to stress the harmful effects that burning coal has and the pressing need to phase out the fossil fuel.

    Global pressure is also on other coal-burning countries like China, India, Australia, Germany, Colombia, and the United States, where President Trump says he is opting out of the Paris accord to avoid curbing industry.

    Germany to see 1.4 GW of hard coal plant closures in 2018

    Montel News reported that Germany will see around 1.4 GW of hard coal-fired power plant closures this year due to poor profitability, according to energy industry group BDEW. A BDEW spokeswoman told Montel late that plant operators had closed 879 MW of capacity so far this year, such as the 310 MW Werdohl and the 283 MW Ensdorf 3 unit.

    By the end of the year, utility Steag is expected to close its Luenen units 6 (149 MW) and 7 (324 MW).

    BDEW said that the seven coal-fired power units that will close this year had produced 3 TWh in 2017, emitting around 3 m tonnes of CO2. The closures come as the German government is preparing a way to scale back its coal-fired generation over the coming decade to reach its climate targets.

    A government-appointed commission, tasked with mapping out a coal exit path, is expected to present its final report early next year.

    Plastic breekt tot minuscule deeltjes af, maar verdwijnt niet.

    Wanneer veel 1e generatie niet westerse immigranten in de bijstand zitten, mag je er niks van zeggen, want niet alle niet westerse immigranten zitten in de bijstand.
    Wanneer het over klimaat gaat en de gevolgen daarvan voor de natuur ... ligt opeens helemaal aan de door de mens geproduceerde CO2 (grote onzin) en de vervuiling, tsjah ... daar moeten we toch ook eens iets aan gaan doen, maar is kennelijk niet zo erg als CO2.

    Politiek bepaalt het ritme, de lobby verdient zich scheel, structureel doen we niks en de rekening komt bij de burger .... Failed Political State !

    Na jaren gesloten te zijn geweest, wordt de Clauscentrale in Maasbracht weer opgestart. Vanaf eind 2020 is de centrale weer op stoom.

    Tot dat besluit kwam eigenaar RWE woensdag. Het energiebedrijf is van mening dat met de sluiting van meerdere kolencentrales in Nederland de gascentrale weer nodig is. Dat meldt De Limburger.

    Stijgende prijzen
    Daarnaast wordt de aantrekkende energiemarkt als reden genoemd. "De prijzen van de elektriciteit stijgen, wat een aanleiding is om de centrale weer in te zetten", zegt woordvoerder Riekje Pelgrim van RWE tegen L1.

    België
    RWE denkt ook dat België behoefte heeft aan nieuwe energiebronnen. De Belgische overheid heeft besloten om in 2025 afscheid te nemen van kernenergie en moet dus op zoek naar alternatieve energiebronnen. In dat gat kan de Clauscentrale springen. "Dat zou voor België het makkelijkst zijn. Het is sneller dan het bouwen van nieuwe centrales", zegt Pelgrim.

    Dertien kilometer
    Eerder dit jaar kondigde RWE al aan dat Claus C kan worden aangesloten op het Belgische net. Daarvoor zou dan nog wel een dertien kilometer lange kabel aangelegd moeten worden. Het idee om de centrale met België te verbinden bestaat al jaren, maar het komt er maar niet van. RWE blijft het plan promoten.
