Saudi Arabia's first 3D printed house revealed - SPA

Construction Week Online reported that driven as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the kingdom has reportedly built its first house using 3D printing technology. As reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the kingdom's National Housing and Industrial Development and Logistics Program announced on 6 November 2018 that it has succeeded in “the first home building experience” using 3D printing technology. Located on Ministry of Housing land to the west of the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the house was built by Dutch company CyBe – described by SPA as one of the top companies that owns 3D building technology globally.

The aim of the project is to keep “abreast of the technological progress in the world of future construction, to benefit from the latest technologies in the world, and to be the first to promote the adoption of innovative construction techniques”.

Strengthening local Saudi industry, which is in line with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the National Transformation (NTP) 2020 Program, were also reasons behind the project.

BASF Venture Capital is leading the Series A investment round in Essentium, Inc., an innovative developer of disruptive, industrial additive manufacturing solutions headquartered in College Station, Texas. Materialise is one of the co-investors in the Series A investment round in Essentium, Inc. BASF and Essentium have been working together on advanced fused filament fabrication (FFF) solutions using Essentium’s proprietary FlashFuseTM technology for high mechanical strength in the build direction for extrusion printed parts. The two companies are now extending their strategic partnership to establish a consistent global materials supply chain supportive of Essentium’s new High Speed Extrusion (HSE) additive manufacturing platform. Essentium and BASF welcome Materialise to enter this strategic partnership to develop 3D printing software for the Essentium technology.

BMW Group makes increasing use of 3D printing

Automotive World reported that at the BMW Group, the use of 3D-printed components is on the rise. Over the last decade alone, the company produced a million parts by this innovative method, and this year output from the BMW Group Additive Manufacturing Center is expected to reach over 200,000 components a 42 percent increase on last year’s total.

Dr Jens Ertel, Director of the BMW Group Additive Manufacturing Center said that “The use of components made by additive manufacturing in series production of vehicles is increasing particularly strongly at the moment. We are following the development and application of advanced these manufacturing methods very closely indeed, partly through longstanding cooperations with leading manufacturers in the field. At the same time, we are engaging in targeted technology scouting and evaluating innovative production systems.”

Recently the BMW Group fitted its one-millionth 3D-printed component in series production: a window guide rail for the BMW i8 Roadster. Thanks to the work of specialists at the Additive Manufacturing Center, the rail took just five days to develop and was integrated into series production in Leipzig shortly after. It is found in the door of the BMW i8 Roadster and allows the window to operate smoothly. The component is manufactured by HP Multi Jet Fusion Technology, a high-speed method enhanced by the BMW Group in conjunction with HP and now in use in the series production of vehicles for the very first time. It can produce up to 100 window guide rails in 24 hours.

3D-printed titanium wheels are so real that they look fake

Financial Express reported that HRE Performance Wheels and GE Additive have 3D-printed a titanium wheel and it could be the next big groundbreaking innovation in the development of performance-oriented cars. These new set of titanium alloy wheels called HRE3D+ are made using a special type of 3D printing called electron beam melting (EBM) that involves melting of titanium powered on each layer with electron beams.

The next generation 3D technology used here makes it possible to print complex shapes that are otherwise difficult to make using CNC machines. The final product (wheels made using this technology) are light in weight and also very durable due to the presence of titanium which is also one of the toughest metals on the planet. A report on Digital Trends quotes Patrick Moran, Creative Director, HRE Wheels says that the partnership between HRE Wheels and GE Additive focuses to showcase the capability of additive manufacturing in a practical application. This technology is widely used in the aerospace industry to make many components but is the first time performance wheels were created.

Currently, the company makes wheels made out of aluminium and the development process consuming a lot of time. There are also other limitations of using aluminium including in the design and the alloy material. Titanium, on the other hand, is stronger and less corrosive. The overall process is also claimed to be more efficient and ends up using only 5% of the material removed as against removing 80% aluminium from a 100 pound forged blocked of the metal.

Having said that, these 3D printed wheels currently exists only as prototypes and the company has not put a date of sale yet. The company will continue to test and develop this process with more tests.

PERI Group buys stake of Danish 3-D concrete printing firm in Copenhagen

German formwork firm the PERI Group announced that it has bought a stake in the Danish 3-D concrete printing specialist COBOD International A/S based in Copenhagen. COBOD International A/S is a newly established sister company of the Danish 3D Printhuset A/S, where 3D Printhuset has bundled its 3-D printing applications for the construction industry, said a recent release. Last year Europe’s first Building On Demand (BOD) was manufactured with a concrete “printer” from COBOD.

Mr Leonhard Braig, member of Group Management of the PERI Group, in the statement, said that “As the market and technology leader in the field of formwork and scaffolding, we at PERI are closely following the development of 3-D concrete printing in the construction industry. COBOD is a leading company in this business. The currently available BOD2 3D printer from COBOD shows that the technology is now ready for the market. With the BOD building in Copenhagen there is a first successful reference project. We are convinced that 3-D printing will become considerably more important in the coming years in certain segments of our industry, especially in residential construction. Together with COBOD, we now want to help this technology to a breakthrough on a broad basis.”

Mr Henrik Lund-Nielsen, CEO of COBOD, said that “We are pleased and proud of PERI’s investment in our company. The fact that PERI is committed to COBOD impressively underlines the potential of 3-D concrete printing in the construction industry. The investment brings together two technologically leading companies in each of their fields. We look forward to the completely new opportunities that the partnership with PERI opens up to us and our customers around the world.”
