E.P.A. Prepares to Roll Back Rules Requiring Cars to Be Cleaner and More Efficient

Experts question logic of trump administration’s claim that low gas mileage saves lives

The trump administration claimed Thursday that in addition to lowering the price of vehicles, it can save 12,700 lives over the coming decades by weakening Obama-era emissions standards for cars and trucks. But that estimate relies on assumptions that have been questioned by experts in and out of the federal government.

The proposal would freeze tailpipe pollution standards at an average of 37 miles per gallon in 2020, instead of raising them to more than 50 mpg by 2025 as set under President Barack Obama.

Half of the deaths the trump plan says it would prevent are based on the idea that making new cars more efficient would make them cheaper to drive, because people wouldn’t have to spend as much on gas. That would lead people to spend more time on the road and increase the potential for fatalities.

According to the trump administration’s logic, cars that burn more gas and are more expensive to drive will be used significantly less, and so will lead to 6,340 fewer deaths.

The other half of deaths that would come from sticking with Obama-era standards, according to the trump fuel-efficiency proposal released Thursday, would fall into two other basic categories.

The first is linked to the argument that technologies to make vehicles more efficient are expensive, which will drive up new car prices, reduce sales and keep some motorists behind the wheel of older cars that are less safe.

    Logica :-)

President trump’s White House director of media affairs for Latino and African-American news outlets quietly left her role in the administration recently.

Helen Aguirre Ferré did not publicly acknowledge her departure but Mercedes Schlapp, White House director of strategic communications, confirmed the exit to Univision on Wednesday.

Another prominent Hispanic Trump official, Carlos Díaz-Rosillo, former deputy assistant to the president and director of policy and interagency coordination, left the administration in June, Univision reported.

ik bespaar jullie het hele artikel, maar lees dit als je een idee wilt krijgen over de Nov verkiezingen en de Dem kans op meerderheid:

The Democrats now have 203 seats at least leaning to them, the Republicans have 198 at least leaning to them, and there are 34 Toss-ups. Based on our current ratings, the Democrats no longer have to win a majority of the Toss-ups to win the House — 15 of 34 would now do the trick — although Republicans hope that some of our Leans Democratic seats are rated too bearishly for their side. There is always a chance that something could happen to change the current dynamic, but nothing that happened Tuesday night suggested that the pro-Democratic trend we’ve seen throughout the cycle is eroding. The election is less than three months away now.

WASHINGTON—Donald trump has obliterated his weekly dishonesty record.

The U.S. president made 132 false claims last week, 19 per day, almost five times his average. That shatters his previous record of 103 false claims in a week, which he set in June.

A breakdown of trump's false claims over the last two weeks:

    36 at Pennsylvania rally
    31 on Twitter
    30 at Ohio rally
    22 at Florida rally
    19 to Illinois steelworkers
    12 to VFW
    11 in GDP speech
    10 in Limbaugh interview
    9 with Italian PM
    5 to pastors

The federal deficit jumped 20 percent in the first 10 months of the 2018 fiscal year, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported Wednesday.

Spending outpaced revenue between the beginning of the fiscal year, on Oct. 1, and July by $682 billion, $116 billion more than over the same period in the last fiscal year.

The rising deficit is largely the result of the tax cuts President trump signed into law at the end of last year, as well as a bipartisan agreement to boost spending, according to CBO.
Tax revenues from individuals rose, even as revenues from corporate taxes dropped.

The trump administration has argued that the tax cuts would bring down the deficit, as economic growth led to higher tax revenue. The economy did expand in the second quarter by 4.1 percent.

But economists have argued the growth would have to be much larger to reduce the deficit.

The CBO projects that the deficit will reach $793 billion by the end of the year and approach $1 trillion next year. White House estimates have the deficit surpassing $1 trillion in 2019.

Budget watchers have warned that interest payments — the amount the Treasury has to pay just to service the debt — are slated to become the fastest-growing annual expenditure.

The CBO projects that in 30 years, the government will spend more on servicing debt than on Social Security or defense.

Vergeet alle schandalen, de BS, de corruptie, de incompetentie, de arrogantie, de diepgewortelde onzedelijkheid van trump cs, hier gaat het uiteindeljk werkelijk om:

In July the Trump administration issued a report declaring that “the War on Poverty is largely over and a success.” And so, the report reasons, it is now appropriate to take away food, healthcare, and housing from people who cannot prove they are working a minimum number of hours a week. It’s an astounding display of circular logic to claim that health care, food assistance, and housing have successfully reduced material hardship, and so we should cut them because fewer people are now suffering.

In this case, the narrative that Trump would like you to believe is that people on “welfare” are to blame for their struggles, particularly since Trump is crowing about a low unemployment rate. If that’s the story that prevails, Trump’s proposal to take away food, housing, and healthcare from struggling families starts to make sense. If low unemployment is the only indicator that matters in the economy, just threatening people with hunger and homelessness if they don’t get a job should do the trick.

But make no mistake: when Trump paints Medicaid, nutrition assistance, Pell grants, affordable housing and other means-tested support as “welfare,” he’s actually attacking ALL of us. Four out of five Americans will experience at least a year of significant economic insecurity and 70 percent of us will turn to a means-tested program at some point. Job loss, cut hours, volatile incomes, a new baby, caregiving responsibilities, divorce, ill health, disability are all common triggers of a spell of poverty or factors that could make meeting an arbitrary “work requirement” challenging.

    en laatse alinea quote:

With so much dysfunction in Washington, it’s easy to forget that when government mobilizes resources, it can have a tangible and positive difference in people’s lives. The Affordable Care Act protected people with pre-existing conditions and helped nearly 30 million people access insurance. Expansions of unemployment insurance in the Recovery Act prevented 1.4 million foreclosures. And safeguards to promote clean air, clean water, safe medication and food, and basic labor standards are crucial to public health and financial security.
