Grondstoffenprijzen lopen altijd anders dan verwacht.
Historische grondstofprijzen.

Growth in cobalt demand from battery sector set to continue - Roskill

Investing News reported that as interest for cobalt continues to increase and the electric car revolution gathers pace, investors are wondering what’s next for the critical metal. The increase in cobalt prices seen since last year pushed carmakers and technology companies to search for ways to decrease its content in lithium-ion batteries, with nickel taking center stage. According to Roskill, demand for cobalt surged at a rate of 8 % per year between 2010 and 2017 to reach 118,000 tonnes, with demand from the battery sector contributing the most to that increase.

In fact, the research firm estimates that demand from this sector increased at a rate of 13.5 % per year between 2010 and 2017, meaning that batteries now account for more than half of total cobalt consumption.

Roskill said in its latest report that “Demand for lithium-ion batteries is set to grow enormously over the coming decade, driven mostly by the electrification of the automotive sector. This will require huge volumes of additional cobalt oxides and sulphate.”

Demand for cobalt in batteries is expected to grow at 14.5 % per year to 2027, by which point demand from this end-use sector alone could exceed 240,000 tonnes double the size of the total market in 2017.

Roskill said that with demand for cobalt also set to increase across other key end uses, such as nickel alloys used in aerospace, the total market could surpass 310,000 tonnes by 2027.

Analysts expect the aggressive expansion plans of major producers like Huayou Cobalt to be enough to supply the market for the next five years, but after that more capacity will need to be built.

The Roskill analysts said that “This will require more investment, which given the outlook for cobalt demand and cobalt prices, should be forthcoming.”

They added that “However, while there should be suitable amounts of cobalt chemical capacity for the next few years, a lack of recent investment in metal capacity, coupled with shutdowns, is set to lead to a widening metal deficit, which should serve to keep prices high.”

According to Roskill’s base-case outlook, new refined capacity will need huge additional amounts of feedstock, but the market should be supplied sufficiently to 2023 thanks to expansions at existing producers, such as Katanga Mining, and major advanced projects, such a ERG’s RTR in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The report also points to constraints in supply that the market could face after that, with a combination of further expansions from existing miners, new projects and perhaps the restart of some operations on care and maintenance to be required if supply is to meet demand.

The report says that “With the vast majority of cobalt mined as a by-product of copper and nickel mining, future mine supply is complicated by the fact that cobalt output is principally governed by demand for, and subsequent supply of, copper and nickel.”

Shell supports UK government’s decision to bring forward its 2040 petrol and diesel ban

The Netherlands-based oil and gas giant, Royal Dutch Shell, has announced its support for calls to the UK government to bring forwards its ban on the sales of new petrol and diesel car sales.

The ban had previously been set for 2040, but committees led by Members of Parliament (MPs), mayors in London, Manchester, and the west midlands, and the Green Alliance thinktank have all requested the deadline to be brought forward to 2030, in line with other nations.

    Miljoendiefstal ’goud’ batterijauto’s

    Door DFT
    5 min geleden in FINANCIEEL

    Speculatie

Miner and commodities trader Glencore (LON:GLEN) reported Tuesday higher output from Katanga, its key copper and cobalt mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Swiss company it produced 696,200 tonnes of copper in the first half of the year, against 642,900 in the previous year, and 16,700 tonnes of cobalt, the key battery material in electric vehicles, up from 12,700 tonnes in the first half of 2017.

Glencore increased cobalt output by almost a third between Jan. and June, thanks to Katanga ramp-up.
Thanks to the ramp up of Katanga, Glencore increased cobalt production by almost a third, 31% to be exact, from January to June this year. The company’s activities in Congo, however, have been overshadowed by a dispute over a contentious mining code signed into law this year as well as a number of probes about possible corruption and money laundering.

In early July, the company revealed it had received a subpoena from by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to produce documents related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and US money laundering statutes. The records relate to the company’s business in Nigeria, DRC and Venezuela, from 2007 to the present.

The company's stock dropped as much as 13% in London after the subpoena became public, wiping more than 5.5 billion pounds ($7.3 billion) off its market value, or about half the $14.8 billion profit Glencore made last year.

The SOJ request came just weeks after Britain’s Serious Fraud Office said it was preparing a formal bribery probe into the company and its deals with Dan Gertler, Glencore’s former business partner in the DRC, where the firm is the top producer of copper and cobalt.

The news was followed by threats from a group of shareholders about imminent legal action against the company for causing them to lose money.

In other commodities, Glencore said nickel’s first-half output was 21% higher than a year earlier, following expanded output at Koniambo in New Caledonia and a shutdown at Murrin in Australia the year before.

The firm’s total African copper production, including its operations in Zambia, increased by 75% to 194,600 tonnes in the six months to June, though sales of the red metal were down by 32,000 tonnes because of shipment timing,

Shares in the company were trading 3.46% higher to 336.2p by 4:03 p.m. London Time.

Glencore sees big jump in cobalt supply from Congo mines
Metal News - Published on Wed, 01 Aug 2018

Glencore increased cobalt production by almost a third after restarting output at its Katanga unit in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Swiss commodity giant is seeking to double its production of cobalt in the next two years, tightening its grip on the market for the key battery material in electric vehicles. First-half cobalt output jumped 31% to 16 700 tons, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

While Glencore is cashing in on higher cobalt and copper demand, it also must confront serious challenges this year. The US Department of Justice has launched a corruption probe into operations in Congo, Nigeria and Venezuela, and it’s facing higher taxes and tougher regulation in Congo.

In its production report today, Glencore maintained most of its full-year targets, with slight reductions to its coal and lead estimates. Copper output rose 8% during the first half and nickel production increased 21%.
