Hyundai steel steps up CSR activities Korea Herald reported that Hyundai Steel, the steelmaking arm of Hyundai Motor Group, is engaged in a number of volunteer projects to boost long-term corporate social responsibility and help tackle social problems. According to the company, Under the company’s vision to “Create miracle and change for the next 100 years,” it has taken part in volunteer programs here and overseas. The company said that since 2011 Hyundai Steel has been running a project aimed at reducing energy use at low-income households in Incheon, Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province, and other regions it operates in. On a global level, some 30 employees from Hyundai Steel in August last year traveled to Lope de Vega, a small village in Northern Samar, Philippine to help build roads for schools and repair welfare centers. The company has also carried out an Area Development Project at six villages in Mandalay, northern Myanmar between 2014 and 2016. It helped build community centers, drinking water storage tanks, wash rooms in schools and other facilities there. Source : Korea Herald
NLMK Group announced Q1 result under IFRS NLMK Group announced an EBITDA growth of 3% qoq to a record USD 812 million Q1 2018 free cash flow increased 3-fold qoq to USD 599 million, driven by strong performance. Q1 2018 key highlights Group revenue in Q1 2018 declined by 1% to USD 2.79 billion (+30% yoy), due to a seasonal drop in sales(-5% qoq), which was offset by the growth in prices. EBITDA grew to $812 m (+3% qoq), driven by the growth in steel prices and new operational efficiency program. Q1 free cash flow increased 3-fold qoq to USD 599 million, driven by the growth of profitability, partial release of working capital, and lower investment. Net income grew by 17% qoq (+56% yoy), driven by higher operating profit. Net debt/EBITDA decreased to 0.31? due to reduction of net debt and growth of profitability. Comment from NLMK Group Acting CFO Sergey Karataev said that “The growth of sales in the Group's home markets of Europe and US, and an improvement in the pricing environment in international markets enabled NLMK to maintain its revenue practically flat compared to the strong Q4 (-1% qoq), despite a seasonal 5% drop in sales qoq. The widening of steel product/raw material price spreads, gains from completed capex projects, and operational efficiency gains were the key drivers behind the growth of EBITDA to a ten-year high of $812 m (+3% qoq). EBITDA margin was 29% (+1 p.p. qoq). It’s important to note that Q1 2018 operational efficiency gains totaled USD 57 million, with the annual target set at USD 130 million. “Investments in Q1 decreased vs. the high level at 2017 year-end and amounted to USD 131 USD. Business profitability growth, conservative capex and the reduction in working capital supported a 3x qoq increase in the Company’s free cash flow to USD 599 million, resulting in a Net debt / EBITDA reduction to 0.31?. A significant liquidity cushion and a strong balance create favorable conditions for high dividend payments, while maintaining financial stability and conditions for further business development.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Iran foreign exchange market went frenzy Financial Tribune reported that Iran foreign exchange market recently went in a frenzy, with the rial losing its value against the US dollar on a daily basis. The government had to intervene to bring back stability by fixing USD rates and transferring bureaux de change's activities to banks, but the implications were far-reaching for businesses working with USD. Let's consider the steel industry, as one of the few non-oil industries prospering on the export front. Exporters and even local traders say they have put everything on hold for now, until the dust settles on the new normal. Khouzestan Steel Company's sales and marketing manager, Bahman Tajalizadeh. Said that "Exports are in lockdown. The only exports taking place at the time are our previously arranged obligations and we don't even know how we're going to get the money." The stabilizing act of intervention has in fact sowed confusion in markets, according to Mr Tajalizadeh, as companies are unable to have any future plans or forecasts in the current situation. The automotive industry is transforming at an incredible rate. The relationships we have with our supply base means everything when it comes to delivering a strong vehicle lineup today and the cutting-edge vehicles and mobility services of tomorrow.” AK Steel Chief Executive Officer Roger Newport said that “AK Steel is proud to be a recipient of the GM Supplier of the Year award for 2017, and the only North American steelmaker recognized.
Details of voestalpine special steel plant in Kapfenberg Around half a year after announcing the location decision, groundbreaking ceremony marked the official start of the three-year construction phase for the new voestalpine special steel plant in Kapfenberg, Austria. From 2021 onwards, each year the fully digitalized plant will produce around 205,000 tons of sophisticated high-performance steels, especially for the international aviation and automotive industries as well as for the oil & gas sector, while at the same time securing more than 3,000 highly skilled jobs in the region over the long term. Preparations for the major project with an investment volume of up to EUR 350 million are already fully underway: the construction site is currently being prepared, with work focusing on energy supply and logistics infrastructure. The new high-tech special steel plant which, once operative, is intended to replace the existing voestalpine Bohler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG plant in Kapfenberg and designed to produce premium quality pre-materials for aircraft components, tools for the automotive industry, equipment for oil & gas extraction, and for the 3D printing of highly complex metal parts. The investment is also setting new standards in environmental protection: the centerpiece of the plant—an electric arc furnace which melts down ultra-pure scrap combined with various alloy metals into special steels—will operate using only electricity generated from renewables. In addition, an efficient recovery system ensures that the heat generated during the process is used within the plant, as well as being fed into the public district heating network. In terms of cooling the production facilities, using closed circuits allows the volume of cooling water to be reduced by up to 90 percent. Structural preparations forging ahead The site preparations for construction of the new production facility, on an existing plot adjacent to the work’s premises which is roughly the size of six soccer fields (around 50,000 m²), have been underway since fall 2017. This includes leveling the construction site, supplying the power in the form of two substations, and constructing access roads and assembly areas. The first contracts for hall construction and plant engineering are scheduled to be awarded this summer. Installation of the equipment is planned from 2019 onwards. The three-year construction phase will itself create up to 1,000 temporary jobs at the site. Major project creating significant value With an investment volume of around EUR 350 million, the voestalpine project is having a significant economic impact: as an IWI study carried out in September 2017 shows, during the construction phase alone (2018–2021), about EUR 240 million of gross value will be generated nationally, EUR 145 million of which in Styria. All in all, the production value resulting from the project amounts to a total of around EUR 575 million (of which in Styria: EUR 375 million). The project indirectly secures 3,500 jobs in Austria during the construction phase, more than half of them in Styria. Source : Strategic Research Institute
In Amerika gaat het in ieder geval iets beter AEX INSTRUMENTEN IN NEW YORK Instrument Amsterdam New York Verschil ArcelorMittal 27,820 27,959 +0,139 +0,50%
