    'Takeda nadert overname Shire'

    OSAKA (AFN) - De Japanse farmaceut Takeda is dicht bij een overname van de Iers-Britse branchegenoot Shire. Dat meldt persbureau Bloomberg op basis van bronnen rond de overname.

    Vrijdag verhoogde het Japanse bedrijf het bod al naar 47 pond (53 euro) per aandeel. Drie eerdere biedingen wees Shire af. De doorbraak zou behaald zijn nadat Takeda het bod van omgerekend zo'n 49 miljard euro nog iets verbeterde. De twee werken aan een voorlopige overeenkomst, volgens de bronnen. Dinsdag zouden de bedrijven al met een voorlopig akkoord kunnen komen.

    Shire liet formeel weten de bieding te hebben ontvangen en zich een oordeel aan het vormen.

    Takeda is er veel aan gelegen om zijn medicijnenportfolio te versterken. Een overname van Shire zou de positie op het gebied van middelen tegen maag- en darmaandoeningen en aandoeningen aan het zenuwstelsel verbeteren. Shire maakte ook middelen tegen kanker, maar verkocht die tak vorige week voor 2,4 miljard dollar aan het Franse Servier.

    Winst voor Japanse beurs

    TOKIO (AFN) - De effectenbeurs in Japan is dinsdag met winst gesloten. De financiële bedrijven waren opnieuw in trek door de oplopende rendementen op Amerikaanse staatsleningen. Ook werd de handel gesteund door een daling van de Japanse yen. Op de meeste andere beurzen in het Verre Oosten was de stemming eveneens positief.

    In Tokio eindigde de Nikkei 0,9 procent in de plus op 22.278,12 punten. De hoofdindex beweegt daarmee rond het hoogste niveau in zeven weken tijd. Autofabrikant Toyota en chemiebedrijf Shin-Etsu Chemical, die veel omzet halen in het buitenland, profiteerden van een goedkopere yen en wonnen tot 2 procent.

    De banken Mitsubishi UFJ en Sumitomo Mitsui Financial stegen tot 2,5 procent. De Japanse financiële instellingen hebben in de afgelopen jaren de investeringen en leningen in de VS opgevoerd vanwege de negatieve binnenlandse rentetarieven. Door de hogere financieringskosten in de VS zullen hun marges naar verwachting verbeteren.

    De beurs in Shanghai dikte 1,8 procent aan en in Hongkong boekte de Hang Seng-index een tussentijdse winst van 1 procent. De All Ordinaries in Sydney kreeg er 0,7 procent bij. De Kospi in Seoul bleef achter met een min van 0,3 procent.

    Nissan to cut jobs at UK plant - Report

    Economic Times reported that automaker Nissan will lay off hundreds of workers from its car plant in Sunderland in northeast England due to a sharp fall in diesel car sales. The plant employs 7,000 workers who produce around 500,000 vehicles a year but the Japanese group has seen sales in Britain slump 35 % in the first quarter on an annual comparison.

    Earlier Tata's luxury arm Jaguar and Land Rover cut more 1000 jobs on account of Brexit.

    Moreover, output will be cut at its central English Solihull and Castle Bromwich plants, affecting some 1,000 agency workers, the source said.

    A spokesman at Jaguar Land Rover declined to comment on the number of jobs which would be lost but the firm said it would be making changes to its output plans.

    The company said in a statement that "In light of the continuing headwinds impacting the car industry, we are making some adjustments to our production schedules and the level of agency staff."

    It is not renewing the contracts of a number of agency staff at the Solihull site and would be informing staff on 20 April of its plans for the 2018-19 financial year.

    Nikkei eindigt met verlies

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurs in Japan is woensdag met verlies geëindigd. Beleggers verwerkten de zware koersverliezen op Wall Street en hielden met een schuin oog de oplopende rendementen op de Amerikaanse obligatieleningen in de gaten. Ook de andere belangrijke beursgraadmeters in het Verre Oosten deden een stap terug.

    De toonaangevende Nikkei in Tokio ging 0,3 procent lager de handel uit op 22.215,32 punten. De Japanse makers van bouwmachines Komatsu en Hitachi Construction Machinery verloren tot 3,5 procent na een fors koersverlies van Caterpillar. De Amerikaanse concurrent liet bij de publicatie van de kwartaalcijfers weten dat de kosten later dit jaar waarschijnlijk zullen oplopen.

    Takeda Pharmaceutical leed het grootste dagverlies in vijf jaar en kelderde meer dan 7 procent. De Iers-Britse farmaceut Shire is in principe akkoord met een overname door Takeda voor omgerekend bijna 53 miljard euro. Beleggers maken zich echter zorgen dat het Japanse bedrijf zich vertilt aan de overname van Shire, dat veel groter is in marktwaarde.

    De beurs in Shanghai zakte 0,4 procent en in Hongkong noteerde de Hang Seng-index tussentijds 1,1 procent in de min. De Kospi in Seoul verloor 0,8 procent. De beurzen in Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland waren gesloten vanwege een nationale feestdag.

    Tokyo prosecutors scrutinize Kobe Steel's data doctoring - Report

    Nikkei reported that Japanese prosecutors have begun investigating Kobe Steel's quality data scandal, a step that could lead to charges. The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office's special investigative unit decided on Tuesday to work with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department on a joint probe. Tokyo prosecutors have already subpoenaed documents from Kobe Steel, which is suspected of criminally misrepresenting data, a source familiar with the matter told Nikkei.

    Kobe Steel has admitted shipping aluminum, copper and other below-spec materials to more than 600 clients around the world. Such materials have found their way into automobiles, aircraft and even shinkansen bullet trains.

    A total of 23 plants and units in the Kobe Steel group altered quality assurance documents to wrongly claim that products met client specifications for such factors as strength. A company-commissioned investigation linked five current and former executives to the cheating, which involved more than 40 employees. Data tampering and similar practices went back to the 1970s, according to the review.

    Kobe Steel maintains that 98% of the suspect materials received additional safety checks after the doctoring came to light. But Tokyo prosecutors say the shipping of mislabeled materials to clients may have violated product misrepresentation laws.

    The scandal has shaken trust in Japanese manufacturing. A third of the clients are overseas, including American aircraft builder Boeing. The U.S. Justice Department has already requested documents from Kobe Steel in a separate investigation launched last year.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De Japanse effectenbeurs is donderdag licht hoger gesloten. Positieve vooruitzichten van de halfgeleiderapparatuurmaker Tokyo Electron zorgden voor koerswinsten in de Japanse chipsector. Elders in het Verre Oosten lieten de belangrijkste aandelenmarkten een gemengd beeld zien.

    De Nikkei in Tokio eindigde uiteindelijk 0,5 procent in de plus op 22.319,61 punten. Tokyo Electron, een zwaargewicht in de index, klom ruim 8 procent. Het bedrijf voorspelde bij de publicatie van de jaarcijfers een flinke groei van het resultaat over heel het jaar. Andere chipbedrijven als Advantest, Screen Holdings en Sumco kregen er tot 3,6 procent bij.

    In Hongkong noteerde de Hang Seng-index tussentijds 1,2 procent in de min onder aanvoering van de banken en technologiebedrijven. De beurs in Shanghai verloor 1 procent en in Sydney, waar beleggers terugkeerden na een vrije dag, daalde de All Ordinaries 0,1 procent.

    De Kospi in Seoul was een positieve uitschieter met een winst van 1,1 procent. Het Zuid-Koreaanse technologieconcern Samsung won 3,2 procent na publicatie van de definitieve kwartaalcijfers. De maker van Galaxy-smartphones boekte voor het vierde kwartaal op rij een recordresultaat.

    Bank of Japan laat streefdatum inflatiedoel los
    Japanse centrale bank handhaaft belangrijkste rentetarieven.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Bank of Japan heeft vrijdag de streefdatum voor het bereiken van zijn 2 procent inflatiedoelstelling laten vallen, wat door de markt wordt geïnterpreteerd als een signaal dat de lange periode van dalende prijzen in Japan nog niet volledig achter de rug is.

    De Japanse centrale bank zei eerder te verwachten dat de inflatie in het boekjaar dat eindigt op maart 2020 de gewenste 2 procent zou halen.

    Bij zijn aantreden als voorzitter van de Bank of Japan in 2013 zei Haruhiko Kuroda dat hij binnen 2 jaar de inflatiedoelstelling van 2 procent wilde halen. Hij heeft die doelstelling inmiddels zes keer moeten uitstellen. In maart bedroeg de kerninflatie slechts 0,9 procent.

    Tegelijkertijd handhaafde de BoJ zijn monetaire beleid en liet de centrale bank zien bereid te zijn vast te houden aan zijn stimulerende beleid, terwijl de Amerikaanse Federal Reserve de rentetarieven verhoogt.

    Binnen de Japanse centrale bank stemden acht bankiers voor en één tegen om het rentetarief van de tienjaarsrente op ongeveer nul te houden en de korte termijn depositorente op 0,1 procent negatief. De centrale ban hield ook aan zijn belofte vast om staatsobligaties te kopen voor 80 biljoen Japanse yen op jaarbasis, ofwel voor ongeveer 732 miljard dollar.

    Detailhandelsverkopen Japan gestegen
    Toename van 1,0 procent in maart.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De detailhandelsverkopen in Japan zijn in maart gestegen. Dit bleek vrijdag uit overheidscijfers.

    In maart stegen de detailhandelsverkopen op jaarbasis met 1,0 procent. Dat was in februari nog een stijging van 1,6 procent.

    Bij grote retailers bedroeg de toename afgelopen maand 0,1 procent op jaarbasis.

    Japanse industriele productie omhoog
    Verdere groei voor april voorzien.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De industrie in Japan heeft in maart meer geproduceerd in vergelijking tot een maand eerder. Dit bleek vrijdag uit cijfers van het Japanse ministerie van Handel en Industrie.

    De industriële productie in Japan nam in maart met 1,2 procent toe op maandbasis. Economen rekenden op een groei van slechts 0,5 procent.

    Op jaarbasis steeg de productie in maart zelfs met 2,2 procent.

    Vooral de productie van elektrische apparaten en transportmiddelen steeg in maart, terwijl de chemie het ook goed deed.

    Fabrikanten rekenen voor april gemiddeld op een productiestijging van 3,1 procent en vervolgens op een daling van 1,6 procent in mei.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurs in Japan is vrijdag met winst het lange weekeinde ingegaan. Beleggers verwerkten het besluit van de Bank of Japan, die de rente conform verwachting onveranderd liet. De meeste andere beurzen in het Verre Oosten gingen eveneens vooruit.

    De Nikkei in Tokio sloot 0,7 procent hoger op 22.467,87 punten. De Japanse hoofdindex won deze week ruim 1 procent en boekte daarmee de vijfde weekwinst op rij. In de maand april kreeg de Nikkei er 4,6 procent bij. Dat is de grootste maandwinst sinds oktober vorig jaar. De Japanse beurs is maandag gesloten vanwege een nationale feestdag.

    Advantest maakte een koerssprong van bijna 14 procent. De chiptester verwacht voor het lopende boekjaar een sterke winstgroei. De fabrikant van elektronische apparaten Kyocera dikte zo'n 13 procent aan na een positieve winstvoorspelling en aankondiging van een aandeleninkoopprogramma. Fanuc kelderde meer dan 9 procent. De maker van industriële robots voorziet dit jaar een daling van de operationele winst van 34 procent.

    Fujifilm Holdings won 0,5 procent. De Japanse maker van kantoorapparatuur heeft een verzoek ontvangen van Xerox om te heronderhandelen over de overnamedeal van 6,1 miljard dollar met de Amerikaanse printerfabrikant. De activistische investeerders Carl Icahn en Darwin Deason vinden dat Fujifilm veel te weinig betaalt voor Xerox.

    In Hongkong noteerde de Hang Seng-index tussentijds 0,7 procent in de plus. De All Ordinaries in Sydney won 0,6 procent. De beurs in Shanghai bleef achter met een verlies van 0,2 procent. De Kospi in Seoul steeg 0,8 procent na de topontmoeting tussen Noord- en Zuid-Korea. De leiders van beide landen hebben elkaar voor het eerst in tien jaar de hand geschud en willen een einde maken aan het militaire conflict tussen de twee Korea's.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurzen in het Verre Oosten waren maandag positief gestemd. De handel verliep relatief rustig aangezien de belangrijke financiële markten in Tokio en Shanghai gesloten bleven vanwege nationale feestdagen. Dinsdag wordt er wel weer gehandeld in Japan, maar zijn de beurzen in China en Hongkong gesloten vanwege de Dag van de Arbeid.

    De Hang Seng-index In Hongkong noteerde tussentijds 1,5 procent in de plus. De stijging werd geleid door de financiële bedrijven en de vastgoedsector. Een sterker dan verwachte toename van de bedrijvigheid in de omvangrijke Chinese industrie in april bood eveneens enige steun aan de handel.

    De All Ordinaries in Sydney dikte 0,5 procent aan, waarbij verliezen in de sectoren grondstoffen en energie werden gecompenseerd door koerswinsten onder de Australische banken. De Kospi in Seoul kreeg er 0,8 procent bij door de hoop op vrede tussen de buurlanden Noord- en Zuid-Korea.

    Japan's March steel exports to US down by 38%

    Japan Today reported that Japan's steel exports to the United States dipped 38.2% in March from a year earlier due to a sharp slide in export of semi-finished products. Japan Iron and Steel Federation said that its overall steel exports dropped 2.5 percent. The decline comes as the United States imposed 25 percent import duties on steel last month. The US government provided a temporary exemption until May 1 for the European Union and six other nations, but not Japan.

    The federation said that steel exports to the United States slipped 14.5% in the financial year ended March 31 from a year earlier to 1.78 million tonnes, their lowest in seven years.

    Overall steel exports from the world's second-biggest steel producer fell 7.3% for the year.

    Kobe Steel posts profit in three years despite data fraud scandal

    Kobe Steel Ltd, Japan's third-biggest steelmaker posted its first annual profit in three years, even after admitting to falsifying quality data, a scandal that affected hundreds of customers and hit Japan's manufacturing prowess. As per report Kobe Steel reported profit of 63.19 billion yen (USD 578 million) for the year ended March 31, against a loss of 23.05 billion yen a year earlier. The result was above its own forecast of 45 billion yen and an estimate of 49.56 billion yen among seven analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters.

    Senior Managing Executive Officer Yoshihiko Katsukawa told a news conference that "Solid demand in steel, aluminum and copper, as well as construction machineries helped boost our sales.”

    Sales rose more than 10 percent to 1.9 trillion yen, indicating the company has not lost significant numbers of customers since announcing the tampering in October last year.

    Kobe Steel, which supplies steel and aluminum parts to manufacturers of cars, planes and trains around the world, admitted to supplying products with falsified specifications to more than 600 customers and said the data fraud had been going on for nearly five decades.

    Japanse industrie groeit iets harder
    Inkoopmanagersindex in april op 53,8.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De bedrijvigheid in de Japanse industrie is in april in een iets hoger tempo gestegen. Dit bleek dinsdag uit definitieve cijfers van Markit Economics en Nikkei.

    De inkoopmanagersindex bereikte in april een stand van 53,8, waar dit een maand eerder nog 53,1 was.

    Een indexstand groter dan 50 wijst op groei van de industrie, terwijl minder dan 50 krimp betekent.

    Honda Motors announces Q4 result

    Honda Motor Co Ltd announced its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year and the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, 2018. Its consolidated sales revenue for the fiscal year (April 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018) amounted to 15,361.1 billion yen, an increase of 9.7% compared to the previous fiscal year, due primarily to an increase in sales revenue from all businesses and favorable foreign currency translation effects. Consolidated operating profit for the fiscal year amounted to 833.5 billion yen, a decrease of 0.9% compared to the previous fiscal year, due primarily to an increase in selling, general and administrative expenses, the settlement of multidistrict class action litigation and the reverse effect from the impact of pension plan amendments in the previous fiscal year. This was despite strong motorcycle sales mainly in Asian countries, such as India and Vietnam, and the positive effect of cost reduction efforts. Consolidated profit before income taxes for the fiscal year amounted to 1,114.9 billion yen, an increase of 10.7% compared to the same period last year, due primarily to an increase in the share of profit of investments accounted for using the equity method. Consolidated profit before income taxes for the fiscal fourth quarter amounted to 190.4 billion yen, an increase of 1.8% compared to the same period last year, due primarily to an increase in the share of profit of investments accounted for using the equity method. Consolidated profit for the fiscal fourth quarter attributable to owners of the parent amounted to 107.7 billion yen, an increase of 12.3% compared to the same period last year.

    The quarterly dividend for the fiscal fourth quarter will be 27 yen per share, an increase of 3 yen per share compared to the same period last year. The total dividends to be paid for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018 will be 100 yen per share, an increase of 8 yen per share compared to the previous fiscal year.

    Toyota Motors to invest USD 170 million in Mississippi plant

    ET reported that Toyota Motor Corp will invest USD 170 million in an existing plant in Mississippi to build the next generation of its Corolla sedan, the Japanese automaker said on 26 April. The investment will lead to the creation of 400 jobs over the next 12 months at Toyota's Blue Springs, Mississippi, plant.

    Toyota said the investment will include replacing the current production lines, allowing the facility "to produce advanced vehicles more efficiently and better adapt to changing market needs."

    The move is part of a commitment made by the automaker in 2017 to spend USD 10 billion in its US manufacturing operations over the next five years.

    Unlike US automakers General Motors, Ford Motor and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles which are pulling back from passenger cars as American consumers abandon them in favor of higher-margin, more comfortable pickup trucks, SUVs and crossovers - Toyota, Honda Motor and Nissan Motor have all invested heavily in all new versions of their sedan models.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurs in Japan is woensdag licht lager gesloten. Vooral de Japanse autofabrikanten werden van de hand gedaan na zwakkere verkopen in de Verenigde Staten. De beter dan verwachte kwartaalcijfers van iPhone-maker Apple zorgden daarentegen voor koerswinsten onder de technologiebedrijven.

    De Nikkei in Tokio eindigde uiteindelijk 0,2 procent in de min op 22.472,78 punten. Beleggers deden het rustig aan op de laatste handelsdag van de week. Donderdag en vrijdag blijft de Japanse beurs gesloten vanwege nationale feestdagen. Toyota, dat de verkopen in de VS met 4,7 procent zag dalen in april, zakte 0,4 procent. Nissan en Honda zagen de verkopen in de VS nog sterker afnemen en verloren tot 2,4 procent.

    De Japanse maker van elektronische onderdelen Murata Manufacturing won 1,5 procent, technologiebedrijf TDK klom 0,8 procent en LCD-maker Nitto Denko kreeg er 5,1 procent bij. Een zwakkere yen hielp ook de exportbedrijven vooruit. Chiptester Advantest steeg 2,2 procent.

    In Hongkong, waar beleggers terugkeerden na een vrije dag, noteerde de Hang Seng-index tussentijds 0,5 procent lager en de beurs in Shanghai daalde 0,2 procent. Uit cijfers van Caixin en marktonderzoeker Markit bleek dat de bedrijvigheid in de Chinese industrie in april sterker dan verwacht is toegenomen. De Kospi in Seoul zakte 0,5 procent en de All Ordinaries in Sydney klom 0,6 procent.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurzen in het Verre Oosten lieten donderdag een gemengd beeld zien. Beleggers hielden de blik vooral gericht op de gesprekken tussen de handelsdelegaties van de Verenigde Staten en China die donderdag en vrijdag plaatsvinden. Het handelsconflict tussen de beide economische grootmachten zorgde de afgelopen weken voor onrust op de beurzen.

    Daarnaast werd nog gereageerd op het besluit van de Amerikaanse centrale bank, die de rente woensdag onveranderd liet. De Federal Reserve wees er wel op dat de inflatie de gewenste 2 procent nadert, maar dat de groei van de economie afvlakt. De handel in Azië verliep verder relatief rustig doordat de belangrijke Japanse beurs gesloten bleef vanwege een nationale feestdag.

    In Hongkong leed de Hang Seng-index een tussentijds verlies van 1 procent door stevige verliezen in de financiële sector en bij de technologiebedrijven. Het nieuws dat de Chinese smartphonemaker Xiaomi een aanvraag heeft ingediend voor een beursnotering in Hongkong kon het tij niet keren. Het zal naar verwachting de grootste beursgang zijn van een Chinees technologieconcern in bijna vier jaar tijd.

    De beurs in Shanghai klom 0,3 procent en de Kospi in Seoul verloor 0,6 procent. De All Ordinaries in Sydney kreeg er 0,8 procent bij, dankzij koerswinsten onder de grondstofbedrijven.
