    Daimler invests in Germany's Volocopter

    Reuters reported that Germany's Volocopter has received EUR 25 million (USD 30 million) in funding to develop an electric flying taxi, with car and truck maker Daimler among the firms providing fresh cash. Volocopter said that Daimler joined a consortium which includes technology investor Lukasz Gadowski, who sits on the supervisory board of Delivery Hero, and others.

    Volocopter said it is developing a five-seat vertical take off and landing electric vehicle aimed at the taxi market and plans to carry out initial demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2017.

    Potential competitors to Volocopter include German start-ups Lilium Jet and eVolo, as well as U.S.-based Terrafugia and California-based Joby Aviation. Commercial aircraft and helicopter manufacturer Airbus is also developing a single-seat "flying car."

    Fresh off the 3D printer: metal parts for Mercedes-Benz Trucks

    Mercedes-Benz Trucks, a division of multinational automotive corporation Daimler has announced the production of its first metal 3D printed spare parts. The components, made directly from a digital data inventory, were produced for classic truck and Unimog models, now 15 years of out production.

    German regulator probes VW and Daimler for disclosure violations

    Reuters quoted German markets regulator BaFin as saying that it was probing whether Volkswagen and Daimler had violated disclosure rules, following media reports that both carmakers made use of whistleblower provisions to regulators.

    Media reports have said that both Daimler and Volkswagen made use of whistleblower provisions as a way to limit the potential fines from authorities examining possible cartel violations.

    German magazine Der Spiegel reported last month that BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen may have used industry committee meetings to fix the size of tanks for AdBlue, a liquid used to treat nitrogen oxide in diesel emissions.

    Bafin said on Monday it was examining whether carmakers had made use of a whistleblower provision, and whether this needed to be disclosed to investors.

    A spokeswoman for BaFin said that "We have reached a stage where we are starting an investigation.”

    German newspaper Handelsblatt was first to report that Bafin had initiated a probe.

    Beursblik: opdracht Daimler teken van vertrouwen in TomTom

    NIBC acht waarde nieuwe contract beperkt.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De opdracht van Daimler voor TomTom om kaarten voor Noord-Amerika te leveren, heeft een beperkte financiële waarde, maar is wel een duidelijk teken van vertrouwen. Dit stelde analist Martijn den Drijven van NIBC woensdag.

    TomTom kondigde dinsdag bij aanvang van de IAA in Frankfurt verschillende nieuwe opdrachten aan, waarvan Den Drijver de deal met Daimler momenteel de belangrijkst vindt.

    De analist was ook verrast door deze opdracht, omdat Daimler één van de grootaandeelhouders van kaartenmaker Here is. "Daimler was al heel erg lang een 100 procent klant van Here", aldus de analist.

    Uitgaande van circa 340.000 verkochte Mercedessen in Noord-Amerika komt Den Drijver uit op een jaaromzet voor TomTom van 8,7 miljoen euro, waarvan een deel over de looptijd van het contract moet worden uitgesmeerd. TomTom zelf merkte op dat het contract geen grote impact heeft op de cijfers dit jaar, wat volgens de analist betekent dat de levering pas aan het einde van het vierde kwartaal zal beginnen.

    Den Drijver denkt niet dat de opdracht van Daimler moet worden beschouwd als een eerste aanzet tot een overstap door de Duitse autofabrikant van Here naar het Nederlandse navigatiebedrijf. De analist denkt dat Daimler simpelweg op twee paarden tegelijk wedt.

    NIBC heeft een Neutraal advies op TomTom met een koersdoel van 9,70 euro "vanwege de zorgen over de lagere groei bij Telematics en onzekerheid over de positie van TomTom in de Automotive markt op de middellange tot lange termijn als gevolg van nieuwe toetreders en technologische veranderingen".

    Woensdagochtend handelde het aandeel TomTom 0,6 procent lager op 9,15 euro.

    Mercedes roept miljoen auto's terug

    STUTTGART (AFN/RTR) - Mercedes roept wereldwijd ruim een miljoen auto's terug naar de garage wegens een mogelijk defect met de airbags. Volgens Mercedes-moederbedrijf Daimler kan door het defect de airbag aan de bestuurderskant spontaan uitklappen. Dat heeft in enkele gevallen tot lichte verwondingen geleid.

    Het gaat om 400.000 auto's in Groot-Brittannië, enkele honderdduizenden in Duitsland en 495.000 in de Verenigde Staten. Of er ook auto's met het probleem in Nederland rondrijden is nog onduidelijk. De auto's zijn gebouwd na 2012 en het gaat om verschillende types en modellen.

    Het defect staat los van eerdere problemen met airbags van de inmiddels failliete Japanse auto-toeleverancier Takata. Daardoor vielen meerdere dodelijke slachtoffers en moesten miljoenen auto's terug naar de garage.

    Daimler starts separate entities for Mercedes Benz cars and Daimler Trucks

    Reuters reported that Daimler has started the process of creating separate legal entities for its Mercedes Benz cars and Daimler Trucks divisions, a move that has fuelled speculation of an eventual break up of the German automaker.

    The company said that it would invest more than 100 million euros in preparations for the reorganization. It added it did not plan to divest any of its divisions and no final decisions had been made.

    It also said it had reached an agreement with labor representatives that will see job guarantees extended until the end of 2029; a 3 billion euro (USD 3.5 billion) contribution made to the group's pension fund; and an extension of a profit-sharing bonus.

    Mr Dieter Zetsche CEO said that in July that Daimler was considering putting parts of its business into separate legal entities, spurring talk of a possible break up as the group looks to fund big investments in autonomous and electric cars.

    The company said in a separate statement on Monday that it was not pursuing any savings, efficiencies or job cuts related to the reorganisation.

    Analysts at Evercore ISI have said that Separating Daimler's divisions could make it easier to value them and create a higher figure than for the current combined whole, with trucks and buses on their own worth 31 billion euro.

    Mercedes-Benz recalls 400,000 cars in UK

    CarAndBike Team reported that German auto giant Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall of 400,000 vehicles in the UK over a potential airbag issue. The recall affects vehicles that were manufactured between November 2011 and July 2017 and includes certain units of the A, B, C and E-Class models, as well as the GLA, CLA and GLC cars in the company's line-up. Mercedes parent Daimler AG also cleared that the recall is not connected to the Takata airbag scandal. There were no fatalities reported either due to the potential issue on its cars.

    Mercedes-Benz said that the issue is with the clock spring model in the steering column which could break and cause the airbag to deploy. Owners have been told a warning light will appear on the dashboard as a result of the issue, and if it does, customers should immediately contact their dealer for fixing the issue. If the wiring components are not correctly earthed, it can deploy the driver side airbag on the vehicle.

    The automaker said that under the recall, the automaker will replace the clock spring model on the affected vehicles, a process which is said to take an hour at the most. Mercedes-Benz will be contacting the affected customers and will ask them to bring their vehicle in. The complete replacement will be made free of charge.

    Mercedes also said that there were no cases of airbags being prematurely deployed in the UK. However, 30 cases on the said issue were reported globally. It is not clear if Mercedes-Benz will be issuing a similar recall in other markets as well including India.

    STUTTGART (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - De Duitse automaker Daimler heeft de afgelopen maanden minder winst gemaakt dan een jaar eerder. Het moederbedrijf van onder meer Mercedes-Benz kampte onder meer met extra kosten om emissiesystemen van oudere dieselauto's aan te passen. Daarnaast leverden de verkopen van Mercedessen minder geld op.

    De brutowinst van het concern kwam uit op 3,5 miljard euro, tegenover ruim 4 miljard vorig jaar. De winstval was forser dan waar kenners gemiddeld rekening mee hielden. De omzet steeg met bijna 8 procent tot 40,8 miljard euro.

    In de afgelopen periode moest Daimler ruim 3 miljoen auto's terugroepen naar de garage na zorgen over de uitstoot.

    De automaker houdt ondanks het afgenomen resultaat vast aan de verwachtingen voor het hele jaar waarbij zowel de omzet als de winst en het aantal auto's dat is verkocht wordt ,,significant" zal stijgen.

    Daimler plan to invest USD 755 million in China for electric car

    REUTERS reported that Germany's Daimler AG plans to invest 5 billion yuan in China for factory capacity to manufacture electric cars and the batteries that power them, part of an effort to help its Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands comply with the country's green car production and sales quotas.

    Mr Hubertus Troska head of Daimler's greater China operations told reporters that the investment was part of Daimler's previously announced 10 billion euros global green car initiative.

    China has set strict quotas for electric and plug-in hybrid cars that come into effect from 2019. It has an ambitious target of 2 million NEV sales by 2020 and has signaled longer term it will phase out the sale of conventional petrol-engine cars.

    This seismic shift towards NEVs has prompted a flurry of electric car deals and new launches as manufacturers worldwide race for a share of the world's largest auto market.

    German carmaker Daimler delivers its first all-electric trucks in Europe

    AFP reported that German carmaker Daimler recently delivered its first fully electric lorries to companies in Europe, as the global race to mass produce the first generation of "green trucks" heats up. Among the first customers for Daimler's Fuso eCanter light-weight truck was express delivery service DHL, which said it would use its six vehicles to navigate Berlin's innercity traffic.

    The keys to eight other eCanter trucks were handed over to German logistics and transport firms DB Schenker, Rhenus and Dachser.

    Mr Marc Llistosella, head of Daimler Trucks Asia, said that "With the Fuso eCanter our customers now operate not only quietly and without locally emitted CO2, they also save money on operating costs. This is the future of urban distribution transport."

    The Mercedes Benz parent company said that with a load-bearing capacity of 4.5 tons, the eCanter is equipped with six batteries and has a range of 100 kilometres (62 miles).

    According to Daimler, package-shipping giant UPS has put eCanter trucks on the road in the United States, while in Japan convenience-store chain Seven-Eleven and Yamato Transport will each operate 25 of the trucks.

    Large-scale production of the fully electric, zero-emissions truck is set to begin in 2019.

    STUTTGART (AFN/DPA) - Automaker Daimler heeft dit jaar fors meer vrachtwagens verkocht dan een jaar eerder. De verkopen van onder meer het merk Mercedes-Benz overtroffen ook de verwachtingen van het Duitse bedrijf, geholpen door een aantrekkende vraag in Azië en Noord-Amerika. De teller stokt dit jaar naar verwachting op 465.000 vrachtwagens, tegenover 415.100 een jaar eerder.

    In Noord-Amerika verkocht Daimler in de eerste elf maanden van het jaar 150.600 trucks. Dat betekende een stijging van 12 procent ten opzichte van een jaar eerder. In Azië gingen de verkopen met bijna een vijfde vooruit tot 132.400 trucks. Vooral in Indonesië wist Daimler weer marktaandeel te winnen.

    Ook in Brazilië, dat momenteel te boek staat als moeizame markt, verkocht Daimler 8 procent meer tot een totaal van 12.200 voertuigen. De groei in Europa was bescheiden. In die regio stegen de verkopen met 3 procent tot 73.600 vrachtwagens. Daimler komt begin februari met definitieve verkoopcijfers.

    Uitstekend 2017 voor Mercedes-Benz

    STUTTGART (AFN) - Mercedes-Benz heeft een uitstekend 2017 achter de rug. De wereldwijde verkoop van het Duitse luxemerk ging met bijna 10 procent omhoog tot circa 2,3 miljoen auto's. Dat meldde moederconcern Daimler.

    Het is het zevende jaar op rij dat Mercedes-Benz een recordverkoop in de boeken zet. In alle belangrijke regio's zat de verkoop in de lift, waarbij met name de Chinese markt een uitschieter was. Daar klom de verkoop met meer dan een kwart. Op de Duitse thuismarkt werden 3,5 procent meer Mercedessen aan de man gebracht. Naar eigen zeggen is Mercedes-Benz nu marktleider in het luxesegment.

    Volgens Daimler was de C-klasse wederom het best verkochte model met 415.000 stuks. Ook de verkoop van compacte auto's van de A- en B-klasse liep goed, terwijl de nieuwe E-klasse in zijn eerste volle verkoopjaar een recordafzet bereikte.

    Bij de stadsauto Smart, ook onderdeel van Daimler, daalde de verkoop met 6,5 procent tot 135.000 voertuigen, wat overigens nog wel het op een na beste resultaat in tien jaar is. Bij sportmerk AMG werden 132.000 voertuigen verkocht, een toename met een derde.

    STUTTGART (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Daimler, het moederbedrijf van Mercedes-Benz, heeft een belang genomen van circa 10 procent in de Britse navigatiestart-up What3words. Dat bedrijf heeft een uniek adressensysteem ontwikkeld voor auto's die zijn verbonden met het internet. Het Duitse autoconcern wil daar graag gebruik van maken.

    In het systeem van What3words is de wereld verdeeld in 57 biljoen vierkanten van drie bij drie meter. Die hebben allemaal een bepaalde adressencode gekregen die bestaat uit drie woorden. Dat maakt het bijvoorbeeld ook makkelijker om naar een plek te navigeren zonder straatnaam. Het systeem zal dit jaar al worden verwerkt in nieuwe modellen van Mercedes-Benz.

    Hoeveel geld er met het belang is gemoeid, is niet naar buiten gebracht. Daimler werkte eerder al samen met de start-up. Die samenwerking zal naar eigen zeggen intensiever worden, nu is ingetekend op een financieringsronde van What3words.

    Mercedes-Benz records it’s highest ever sales in India in 2017

    Luxury car maker, Mercedes-Benz, announced that it had clocked the highest ever yearly, half-yearly and also Q4 sales in 2017. By registering record sales of 15,330 units in the January to December 2017 period, Mercedes-Benz grew its sales volumes by 15.9%, maintaining its strong hold on the dynamic Indian luxury car industry, according to a company statement.

    Mr Roland Folger, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said that “Our market strategy is well-founded and highly customer centric, enabling us to contribute to the economy by doubling our volumes in the span of few years. 2017 was a successful year for us and the decision to introduce the Long Wheelbase E-Class was strategic and highly successful. We are in particular very satisfied with the strong growth in volumes in the C-Class, E-Class and the SUV segment which remains the mainstay of our portfolio. Clocking more than 15,000 sales units is one of the many first-of-its kind achievements for MercedesBenz in the luxury car segment in India.”

    The luxury sedan segment grew in double-digits with the introduction of the long wheelbase E-Class significantly contributing to the volumes.

    The GLC, GLE and GLS continue to retain the tag of the highest selling SUV in their respective categories, and contributed to the SUV segment, claims the company. The SUV segment also grew in double digits in 2017. The performance and sports-car brand, Mercedes-AMG achieved double-digit growth in 2017.

    Additionally, the new generation cars performed well. Folger elaborated, “Our sales success in 2017 makes us confident of our sustained leadership in the Indian luxury car market. Our 2018 strategy, ‘The Best Keeps Leading’ is based on this market success and confidence and aims to further deepen our commitment for our patrons. With the customers at the focal point, ‘The Best Keeps Leading’ strategy will see Mercedes-Benz’s product offensive intensify.”

    Mercedes-Benz will continue to innovate in personal mobility and customer centricity. In 2018, Mercedes-Benz will introduce new products, many without a predecessor in India. There will be a range of AMG products that will make their India debut in 2018.

    Mercedes-Benz also plans to implement after-sales initiatives and consolidate existing service initiatives. The luxury carmaker will not only expand its retail network in newer markets, but also enhance the luxury experience across its dealerships through luxury elements.

    In 2018, Mercedes-Benz will maintain special focus on emerging Tier II and Tier III markets with Brand Tour, LuxeDrive and AMG Performance Tours to remain high watermark of 2018.

    STUTTGART (AFN) - Het Duitse Daimler, moederconcern van Mercedes-Benz en stadsauto Smart, heeft in 2017 records behaald bij de omzet, de verkopen en winst. De totale inkomsten stegen met 7 procent tot 164 miljard euro. De nettowinst ging met bijna een kwart omhoog tot 10,9 miljard euro, maakte het bedrijf bekend.

    Het concern verkocht vorig jaar 3,3 miljoen auto's, een stijging van 9 procent. ,,Het personeel van Daimler is er opnieuw in geslaagd om de records van het voorgaande jaar te breken'', zegt Daimler-topman Dieter Zetsche.

    Hij voorziet dat de autoverkopen dit jaar ,,licht'' stijgen ten opzichte van vorig jaar. De winst komt op ongeveer hetzelfde niveau uit als vorig jaar.

    Vierde kwartaal

    Hoewel de zaken in heel 2017 goed gingen, zijn analisten minder tevreden over de resultaten in het vierde kwartaal. De winst van 3,47 miljard euro was een stuk minder dan verwacht.

    Daimler heeft plannen om 10 miljard euro te investeren met als doel om tien nieuwe elektrische auto's op de markt te brengen tegen 2022.

    Daimler warns of supply chain risk from switch to electric vehicles

    Reuters reported that Daimler AG, owner of the Mercedes-Benz brand, warned that a fall in demand for diesel cars and a switch to electric vehicles could force it to prop up its supplier base. Carmakers face increased legal and regulatory scrutiny over pollution levels produced by their diesel-engined vehicles after Volkswagen in 2015 admitted to cheating emission tests using engine management software.

    To avoid a total ban on their diesel vehicles, Daimler and other carmakers have stepped up development of electric cars and agreed to update their engine management software to cut down pollution levels.

    Daimler's suppliers are being forced to invest to help electrify the entire Mercedes-Benz range by 2022, prompting the carmaker to use unusually frank language to warn about the impact of the shift to electrified cars in its report.

    It said that "Due to the planned electrification of new model series and a shift in customer demand from diesel to gasoline engines, the Mercedes-Benz Cars segment in particular is faced with the risk that Daimler will require changed volumes of components from suppliers. This could result in over- or under-utilization of production capacities for certain suppliers. If suppliers cannot cover their fixed costs, there is the risk that suppliers could demand compensation payments," Daimler said.

    It added that "Necessary capacity expansion at suppliers' plants could also require cost-effective participation."

    Daimler created a risk management committee to oversee its suppliers in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, when some smaller companies ran into cash-flow problems, forcing Daimler to step in.

    Daimler said that its profit growth would be dampened this year by spending on new technologies such as electric and autonomous vehicles.

    In its annual report, Daimler also said that political crises and uncertainties could lead to supply bottlenecks for specific raw materials, leading to volatile prices.

    The annual report said that "Generally, the ability to pass on the higher costs of commodities and other materials in the form of higher prices for the manufactured vehicles is limited because of strong competitive pressure in the international automotive markets." Daimler's report, published on Tuesday, showed that provisions stood at EUR 14 billion at the end of 2017, 2.1 billion higher than a year earlier.

    Mercedes Benz recalls 20,779 cars in China due to defective seat belts

    IANS quoted a quality control body statement as saying that Mercedes-Benz China and Beijing Benz Automotive will recall 20,779 vehicles in the country from March 9, due to defective seat belts. Beijing Benz Automotive will recall a total of 18,893 class C and GLC vehicles manufactured between October 2016 and February 2017, said China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

    The report said that Mercedes-Benz China, for its part, will recall 1,886 imported class S, class C and GLC sports vehicles manufactured between July 2016 and December 2016.

    Chinese authorities noted that defective seat belts might not work in the event of an accident and pose a safety hazard.

    Meanwhile, the recall measure will come into effect from March 9 when the car manufacturers will begin replacing defective parts free of charge.

    BERLIJN - Amerikaanse onderzoekers hebben naar verluidt bewijzen gevonden dat ook autofabrikant Daimler sjoemelsoftware gebruikte waarmee emissietesten beïnvloed konden worden. Dat schrijft het Duitse blad Bild am Sonntag op basis van vertrouwelijke documenten.

    Het moederbedrijf van Mercedes-Benz is een van de autofabrikanten die extra onder een vergrootglas liggen sinds in 2015 aan het licht kwam dat Volkswagen op grote schaal geknoeid heeft met uitstootgegevens. Zowel in Duitsland als in de Verenigde Staten lopen er onderzoeken naar Daimler.

    Volgens Bild am Sonntag zou er in bepaalde auto's van het concern onder meer technologie zijn aangetroffen die de apparatuur om schoner te rijden uitschakelt, wanneer de wagen 26 kilometer heeft gereden. Een woordvoerder van Daimler weigerde inhoudelijk commentaar te geven. Hij benadrukte daarbij dat de autoriteiten tot nu toe nog geen officiële klacht hebben ingediend.

    Bepaalde aanpassingen
    Vorig jaar heeft het bedrijf wel al miljoenen Europese dieselwagens teruggeroepen naar de garage voor bepaalde aanpassingen. Dat was volgens Daimler echter om ,,bestuurders van dieselauto's gerust te stellen en het vertrouwen in dieseltechnologie te versterken.''

    Volkswagen reserveerde eerder vele miljarden euro's voor de nasleep van het schandaal. Miljoenen dieselauto's van het concern bleken voorzien van technologie die ervoor zorgde dat ze in testsituaties veel milieuvriendelijker leken dan zij in de dagelijkse praktijk waren.

    Daimler shares fall after report about software device in Mercedes cars

    Reuters reported that Daimler shares fell 2 percent in early tradey following a media report saying the maker of Mercedes-Benz cars had used software engine management systems to pass stringent US emissions tests. US investigators probing Mercedes-Benz found that its cars were equipped with software which may have helped them to pass diesel emissions tests, German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported citing confidential documents.

    A Daimler spokesman said the company was cooperating fully with U.S. authorities and had agreed to strict confidentiality with the U.S. Department of Justice.

    The spokesman said that "The authorities know the documents and no complaint has been filed."The documents available to Bild have obviously selectively been released in order to harm Daimler and its 290,000 employees." Daimler shares were down 2.1 percent to 70.98 euros at 1045 GMT while Germany's blue-chip DAX was up 0.03 percent.

    Rival Volkswagen was forced to pay billions of dollars in fines after it was caught in 2015 using software to detect when a vehicle was undergoing an exhaust test, manipulating emissions to disguise illegal levels of pollution.

    Analysts said Daimler's regulatory problems may not be of the same magnitude as those seen by Volkswagen and Fiat Chrysler .

    Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said that "Unlike Fiat Chrysler, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not chosen to issue a notice of violation against the company. As a result, at this point, to the extent there has been any wrongdoing, the penalties may be more weighted towards remedy than fines."

    The EPA in February 2016 requested information from Mercedes-Benz to explain emissions levels in some of its diesel cars.

    Daimler said in its quarterly earnings report that it faced ongoing investigations by U.S. and German authorities into excess diesel emissions which could lead to significant penalties and recalls.

    Software-based engine management systems are illegal if they are not declared to U.S. regulators and if they are designed to evade anti-pollution tests.

    In Europe, carmakers have, however, legally made use of a "thermal window", a temperature threshold which allows carmakers to throttle back emissions management systems in order to protect the engine from condensation or other damage.
