    @Kees2

German carmaker Daimler delivers its first all-electric trucks in Europe

AFP reported that German carmaker Daimler recently delivered its first fully electric lorries to companies in Europe, as the global race to mass produce the first generation of "green trucks" heats up. Among the first customers for Daimler's Fuso eCanter light-weight truck was express delivery service DHL, which said it would use its six vehicles to navigate Berlin's innercity traffic.

The keys to eight other eCanter trucks were handed over to German logistics and transport firms DB Schenker, Rhenus and Dachser.

Mr Marc Llistosella, head of Daimler Trucks Asia, said that "With the Fuso eCanter our customers now operate not only quietly and without locally emitted CO2, they also save money on operating costs. This is the future of urban distribution transport."

The Mercedes Benz parent company said that with a load-bearing capacity of 4.5 tons, the eCanter is equipped with six batteries and has a range of 100 kilometres (62 miles).

According to Daimler, package-shipping giant UPS has put eCanter trucks on the road in the United States, while in Japan convenience-store chain Seven-Eleven and Yamato Transport will each operate 25 of the trucks.

Large-scale production of the fully electric, zero-emissions truck is set to begin in 2019.

Yamaha evaluating launch of electric two-wheelers in India

PTI reported that Japanese auto major Yamaha is conducting a feasibility study to evaluate possibility of launching electric two-wheelers in India, a top company executive said. The company, which sells a range of bikes and scooters in the country, may also look at investing opportunities for power units and batteries for electric vehicles.

Yamaha Motor Research and Development India MD Yasuo Ishihara, said that "We are at present conducting a feasibility study in this area (electric two wheelers). Yamaha has an edge in this segment as we already have such products in other countries. Transferring such products to India, it is not so difficult."

Through the study, the company is also planning to assess if EVs could completely replace models that are run on internal combustion engines.

Mr Ishihara said that "I believe that the EV products cannot be the complete replacement to the current internal combustion engines. This is the one of the biggest study points."

In order to safeguard its position in the country, the company also plans to continue with the development of traditional internal combustion engines.

He said that "We have already started our feasibility study in order to achieve this target set by the government of India but at the same time we will continue to develop more highly efficient engines in order to cater to the demands of Indian customers."

When asked about company's investment plans in the EV space, he said: "Investment shall mainly be for power units and batteries. Infrastructure development in collaboration with some partners may be another area where we would look forward to make our investments."

India to give incentives to boost electric vehicles - Mr Kant

PTI cited Niti Aayog CEO Mr Amitabh Kant as saying that the government would support manufacturing and selling of electric vehicles (EVs) by giving incentives such as lower road taxes so that the automobile sector continues to play a major role in India's GDP and job creation. He said in the long run, India must become a major manufacturer of automobiles, batteries and interoperable charging stations, and help reduce pollution in cities. This, he said, should be done in a manner that does not disrupt combustion vehicle manufacturing.

He said at an event organised by industry body Assocham "We would like to support electric vehicles by providing vast range of initiatives such as lower road taxes. And the government will act as a catalyst so that automobile sector continues to play a major role in India's GDP and job creation as well as in exports."

Kant pointed out that today, automobile along with automobile component industry is one of the key drivers of India's economic growth, contributing 7.2 per cent to the GDP.

Citing several studies, Kant said by 2027-28, the cost of EV battery will come down from USD 273 per kWh to USD 73 per kWh even without taking Indian demand into consideration.

He said that "If you take Indian demand into consideration, then it will come down to USD 60 per kWh."

BMW says hits target of selling 100,000 electric cars this year
Auto News - Published on Thu, 21 Dec 2017

Reuters quoted BMW as saying that it had hit its target of selling 100,000 electric cars this year around the world, benefiting from strong demand in western Europe and the United States for models such as the i3 and the 2-series plug-in hybrid Active Tourer. This is more than 60 percent up from the 62,255 electric cars BMW sold last year. The German luxury carmaker has said it expects 2018 electric-vehicle (EV) sales to grow by a medium two-digit percentages.

A pioneer in electric cars, BMW launched the i3 hatchback in 2013 but sales have been relatively low and management has wrestled with whether to go all-out for electrification.

But that changed in September when the Munich-based group said it would gear up for mass production of electric cars and aimed to have 12 fully electric models by 2025 with a range of up to 700 kilometres.

Chief Executive Mr Harald Krueger said that "Electric mobility is the indicator where I measure our success."

Progressie in productie nieuwe Model 3.

Afgelopen kwartaal produceerde Tesla 24.565 auto's.

Batteries are key driver in the electric vehicle

Seeking Alpha reported that Batteries are the key driver in the electric vehicle space. Better batteries mean longer range, faster charging times, lower costs. Tesla has delivered cars with exceptional performance and range in large part because it uses really good batteries. General Motors is delivering its Bolt electric car with Tesla-competitive range because it too has good batteries. As more and better batteries become available, we can expect more long-range electric cars (and trucks) from more manufacturers. But there is a catch.

A constraint prevents large carmakers from converting wholesale from ICE vehicles to BEVs. While straightforward application of capital can build a big battery factory, batteries won't come out of the factory unless the necessary ingredients first go in. Today's 'good' (that is high energy density) batteries require three moderately expensive ingredients, two are supply constrained at levels that fundamentally prevent industry conversion to electric cars and trucks at scale.

The three critical battery ingredients are nickel, cobalt, and battery grade lithium hydroxide. The last two are bottlenecked. John Petersen has written extensively on Seeking Alpha about the limits to cobalt supply. Lithium hydroxide is more expensive than the more common lithium carbonate, and there is limited capacity for making battery grade lithium hydroxide, so it is also bottlenecked to some degree.

Electric and hybrid cars the driving force to cut gas emissions

Carmakers in India are gearing up to meet an ambitious government deadline to sell only electric cars in the country by 2030, but analysts say the path ahead is filled with obstacles. The Indian government has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 37 per cent by 2030 and reduce oil demand by 64 per cent. Carmakers are planning to ramp up the production of electric vehicles. One of them is Mahindra & Mahindra, which has electric cars in the market and is now looking into electric trains.

Singapore launched its first large-scale electric car sharing programme last month with 80 battery-powered hatchbacks and 32 charging stations. It aims to have 1,000 electric cars and 500 charging locations by 2020. For now, roads are dominated by fossil-fuel vehicles. As of last July, there were only 132 plug-in petrol-electric hybrids and 12 pure electric vehicles out of 606,000 cars in Singapore, says the Land Transport Authority.

People gather at the booth of Chinese electric vehicle start-up Nio as it unveils its ES8 SUV at the Shanghai auto show. China, which has a nagging pollution problem, is the world leader in sales of new-energy vehicles - electric, plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell. Sales of such vehicles jumped 51.4 per cent in the 11 months to November and are expected to top one million units this year. Beijing has set a target of seven million vehicles by 2025 and is doling out subsidies. Homegrown models are riding the wave. ES8, made by start-up NIO can run up to 500km on a single charge. It costs 448,000 yuan (S$93,400) - a little more than half the 836,000 yuan that Tesla's Model X SUV costs in China.

Paris is home to Autolib, the world's largest electric car-sharing scheme with more than 4,000 vehicles. The company behind Autolib supplied the charging infrastructure and cars of Singapore's just-launched scheme. The administration of President Emmanuel Macron, who has vowed to "make the planet great again", says sales of all petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned by 2040. That could prove ambitious as such vehicles represented 95.2 per cent of French new car fleets in the first half of last year, while electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for less than 5 per cent.

Oil-rich Norway boasts the world's highest rate of battery-vehicle ownership, thanks to generous tax breaks and subsidies. It has the highest per capita number of electric vehicles, with 216 per 10,000 population. About 35 per cent of new cars are sold with a plug, says a Financial Times report last June, and Norway has a target of zero emissions for all new cars by 2025.

Fisker's luxury electric car might steal Tesla's Thunder - Report

Sputnik reported that California-based carmaker has revealed its all-new sporty electric vehicle at the 2018 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Mr Henrik Fisker, the company’s CEO, said that the EMotion car is able to drive about 640 kilometers without needing to be charged.

Having announced its price tag – USD 130,000 – Fisker stated that the car wouldn’t be shipping for two years. Some believe that Fisker’s EMotion could easily beat Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster, also slated to arrive in 2020, and announced it as the “fastest production car ever made” designed to “give a hardcore smack-down to gasoline cars.”

    Belgium's D'Ieteren targets 35-40pct electric car sales by 2025

Reuters reported that Belgium's D'Ieteren wants 35-40 percent of its vehicle sales to be electric vehicles by 2025, the head of its car sales division has told Belgian business daily L'Echo. D'Ieteren, which sells cars and parts of Volkswagen brands including Skoda, Audi and Lamborghini in Belgium, has a more ambitious target than the German group which wants electrified vehicles to be a quarter of deliveries by 2025.

D'Ieteren Auto chief Mr Denis Gorteman told L'Echo, said that "In Belgium, particularly in Flanders and Brussels, the (short) driving distances are very suitable for electric," adding that the high percentage of people living in houses, rather than apartments, meant it was easier for them to charge vehicles.

Mr Gorteman said that to achieve the target Belgium needed to invest in the sector and have policies that encouraged electric vehicle use, although he said the sector was not looking for subsidies.

Furious Norwegians sue Tesla over 'false advertising' - Electric Mood
Published on Mon, 15 Jan 2018

While Norway is gradually becoming the world leader in the percentage of electric cars in use, the transition is not without problems. Nearly 80 motorists have sued the US automaker Tesla over misleading advertising, claiming their electric cars failed to deliver as promised.

The plaintiffs complained that the real power of their Tesla S P85D sedan, with what was claimed to have the fastest acceleration in the world, only had 469 horsepower, which is way below the 700 horsepower initially promised by the manufacturer, the Norwegian economic daily Dagens Næringsliv reported.

Because the declared power was later downgraded by the manufacturer itself following revealed deficiencies in the battery, 79 dissatisfied Tesla owners decided to take the producer to court, demanding a price reduction due to inadequate marketing, in what seems to be a repeat of a similar, earlier collective Norwegian lawsuit.

Previously, a group of 133 Norwegian motorists sued Tesla and reached a deal in December 2016, as the electric car manufacturer pledged to either recompense the disgruntled car owners with either NOK 65,000 ($8,000), new equipment or a free car upgrade.

"It's the same kind of case that ended in a settlement last time," the plaintiffs' lawyer Christoffer Falkeid said. "It's about the power of the car and the mistakes in marketing and in the sales process, but I don't want to go into details," he added.

The 79 plaintiffs, including investor Jens Ulltveit-Moe, who reportedly swapped his Porsche for a Tesla, come in addition to 38 other Tesla owners, who sued the car manufacturer in autumn of 2017.

The case is scheduled for investigation at the Oslo District Court in June this year, with six days to settle the dispute.

Despite being one of Western Europe's leading oil and gas exporters, Norway is one of the world leaders in electric cars in terms of market share, and one of the largest markets in the world for Tesla. Last year alone, Tesla's combined sales in the Nordic country reached 8,465 cars.

?In 2017, electric cars, as well as hybrids, which use both a battery and a diesel or petrol motor, accounted for a historic 52 percent of all new car sales in Norway, up from 40 percent in 2016, according to the Norwegian Road Federation, which cheered the fact that the fossil-fuel market share has fallen below 50 percent for the first time.

In Norway, new electric cars are exempt from almost all taxes and granted otherwise pricey perks, such as subsidized parking, re-charging and use of toll roads, ferries and tunnels.

Ford verdubbelt investeringen in elektrische auto's

    Profiel

Nissan Motor looks to manufacture electric cars in India

Times of India reported that Carlos Ghosn-led Nissan Motor Co is looking at manufacturing an all-electric budget small car in India - its cheapest globally – but has sought concessions from the government to support sales of the clean cars. A price of around INR 7 lakh - or upwards of USD 10,000 - is being considered for the car - which is under study presently. This may perhaps make the car the cheapest private electric passenger vehicle in the country, less expensive than even Mahindra & Mahindra’s e2O mini car.

Mr Nicholas Thomas, Global Director for Nissan’s electric vehicles (EV), told TOI at a time when the company has showcased the new version of its Leaf electric car at the CES “If you want to sell electric cars with significant volumes in India, you have to make them there. We are considering this (local manufacturing) as part of a study.”

The company is also looking at exporting the India-made electric cars and may sell it in other Asian countries to gain economies of scale and ride on India’s low-cost manufacturing processes.

Asked how soon can a decision be firmed up, Thomas said, “It depends on the Indian electric market, and how soon it develops.”

However, he said that the government needs to come up with credible solutions to support the growth of electric cars till they are in their infancy. “We’ve had many rounds of discussions with the Indian government on this issue. Though their target of having electric cars by 2030 is very clear, there is no clear roadmap on how to get there. We need more clarity.”
