India records highest-ever renewable energy generation - India Ratings ET reported that the month of June 2017 will go down in the history of India’s energy sector as the period when the nation recorded the highest monthly power generation from renewable energy sources, reinforcing hopes the country is on track to meet its ambitious green energy targets. India generated 10.2 Billion Units (BUs) of electricity in June from green energy sources including solar, wind, biomass and small hydro - 26 per cent more than 8.1 BUs of renewable energy generated in the same month last year and 17 per cent more than 8.6 Bus generated in the previous month (May 2017), research and ratings agency India Ratings said in a report. The report analyses data for monthly renewable power generation for two years between August 2015 and June 2017 drawing the data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the power ministry’s planning wing. Mr Salil Garg, Director at India Ratings, said that “The monthly data for power generation from renewable sources was not made public by the CEA but one can assume the generation in each of the months prior to August 2015 is lower than the generation for June 2017 as capacity itself was smaller then.” Cumulatively, the country’s power generation from renewable sources in the first three months of the current financial year (2017-2018) grew 27 per cent to 25.39 BU as compared to the corresponding period a year ago. Mr Garg said that “This could be the highest monthly renewable generation as substantial renewable generation capacity has been added towards March 2017 in solar.” India’s total installed solar power generation capacity grew three-fold to 13,652 Megawatt in the last two fiscal years leading to increased generation from solar. He said that renewable power generation grows in three months between June and August due to higher solar radiation, monsoon, and higher wind speed. He added that “The record high achieved in June could come down in the winter months due to lower solar, and lower water for small hydro. Overall Y-o-Y number could be on an increasing trend but monthly generation M-o-M could vary.” Meanwhile, solar power generation witnessed a robust growth of 95 per cent to 1,797 Million Units (MU) in the month of June as compared to the corresponding month a year ago. Similarly, Wind power generation in June increased 24 per cent to 7,229 Million Units. Source : ET

India will better its 175 GW renewable energy target - Report IANS reported that India can surpass its target of installing 175 gigawatt of renewable energy capacity by 2022, and plans to bring offshore wind energy and large hydro-electric projects under the ambit of renewable energy towards realising this, a senior official said. New and Renewable Energy Secretary Mr Anand Kumar said at the Renewable Energy India Expo "With prices of solar and wind coming down, we are confident that we will not only achieve the 175 GW target, but will also exceed it." Mr Kumar said that "Renewable energy is the only way to meet energy demand of 1.25 billion people in the country. It offers an opportunity to build a new low-carbon energy world. Harnessing it will make India an energy-independent economy." He said that "Today, we are contemplating bringing large hydro also under the definition of renewable power. We are also contemplating to exploit our offshore wind potential." Stressing on the need to focus on solar manufacturing in the country, Mr Kumar said the government is considering a policy that will make it mandatory for power plants to generate a certain portion of their output from renewables.

JBM Group enters waste-to-energy biz, signs MoU with Haryana government PTI quoted JBM Group as saying that it has signed a concession agreement with the Haryana government to build and operate a 5 MW power plant that will treat 500 tonne of municipal waste per day, marking its foray into the waste to energy sector. The project will be developed by JBM Environment Management at an investment of INR 176 crore and will entail door to door collection of waste, its transportation, construction and operation of the power plant. JBM said that "Land has already been allotted by the state government. The project will help dispose of 500 tonnes of solid waste per day generated from Sonepat cluster, which comprises of Sonepat, Panipat, Samalkha and Gannaur." JBM Group has roped in EKOLOG, which has more than 30 years of experience in operating integrated waste management systems in Europe and Asia for this project. Mr Nishant Arya executive director of JBM Group said that "Our focus has been to ensure sustainable and green environment for the society and country at large, therefore, all new businesses have been around the same whether you look at electric buses, solar energy and now waste to energy." Nearly 1.3 GW of coal capacity slated for closure in Mississippi, Florida Coal has been struggling against the low cost of power generated from natural gas made possible by cheap fuel from U.S. shale plays. Those economic pressures have been compounded by slack power demand in many regions which can lead to low dispatch rates for generating plants. In Florida, JEA says it has excess generating capacity primarily as a result of its customers’ “effective conservation methods.” JEA owns 80% of the St Johns River plant. The other 20% is owned by FPL. Last year the plant produced half as much energy as it did 10 years ago. “This agreement is important for JEA and will allow us to right-size our power generation capabilities while offering, significant environmental benefits to the community,” JEA CEO Paul McElroy said in a statement. In Mississippi, demand for the output from the Henderson plan fell after utilities in Mississippi joined the Midcontinent Independent System Operator. Access to MISO’s relatively cheap electricity has meant that the Henderson plant is infrequently dispatched. The plant is now producing only 3% of the electricity that Greenwood buys from the Municipal Energy Agency of Mississippi, a group of city-owned utilities. Greenwood Utilities CEO Tony Sinclair told the AP that revenue from the Henderson plant no longer covers costs and maintenance is difficult because many machines are so old that they require custom made parts.
