Japanese Mitsui aims to expand LNG trading operation in Asia

Reuters reported that Japan’s Mitsui & Co Ltd plans to expand its liquefied natural gas trading operation as demand for the cleaner fuel spurs more spot transactions in Asia. The move comes amid a big shift in the market in Asia, which takes in about 70 percent of global shipments of LNG, with traders and end users increasing their ability to trade in anticipation of a supply influx from Australian and US projects. Utilities such as Tokyo Gas and Kansai Electric Power that often tie up with Mitsui and other Japanese trading houses are expanding trading operations after winning more flexible terms on contracts, allowing them to resell excess cargoes, something unheard of only a few years ago.

Mr Hiroyuki Kato, Executive Vice President of Mitsui & Co Ltd said in an interview that “We are going to reinforce our LNG team at our energy trading unit in Singapore as LNG spot trading is on the rise.”

Mr Kato said, without giving details that the unit has about 70 staff, mainly focusing on oil, but it will increase the number of LNG traders in the next few years from only a few now.

Around 260 million tonnes of LNG was shipped globally in 2016, according to the International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers. Spot trades, defined by GIIGNL as cargoes delivered within three months from the transaction date, totaled around 47 million tonnes, 15 percent higher than in 2015.

Japan takes in nearly a third of global shipments but in the last year China has emerged as a big importer. Kato says Mitsui is betting demand will surge as it did with iron ore, where the trading house has built up expertise.

Mitsui traded 2.8 million tonnes of LNG in the year ended March 31, but will receive more supplies from next year when the Cameron LNG project in Louisiana starts operations.

The Japanese company has signed up to take 4 million tonnes of LNG annually from the project, with some of it tied up in term contracts leaving it with volumes to trade.

He said that “What has helped grow our iron ore operation was China’s shopping spree. The same will likely happen for LNG, led by China, along with Southeast Asia and India. If China switches 5 percent of its power sources to gas, it will boost LNG-equivalent demand by 80 million tonnes, the same as Japan’s total imports.”

Currently, China currently imported about 26 million tonnes of LNG in 2016, up by a third from a year earlier.

Royal Dutch Shell diverts US LNG cargo to Dubai after Qatari diplomatic row

Reuters reported that Royal Dutch Shell has sent a replacement cargo of liquefied natural gas from the United States to Dubai, after a diplomatic row disrupted typical trade routes from Qatar, the world's biggest producer. Shell has a deal to supply the Dubai Supply Authority with LNG which it typically sources from Qatar because of its proximity. But bans on Qatari vessels entering ports in the United Arab Emirates, imposed after top Arab powers severed diplomatic and transport links with Qatar, meant it had to source the LNG from elsewhere.

The Maran Gas Amphipolis tanker, carrying around 163,500 cubic metres of LNG produced in the United States, was initially headed toward Kuwait's port of Mina Al-Ahmadi but made a U-turn to head for Dubai's port of Jebel Ali. The tanker is currently unloading at DUSUP's floating import terminal at Jebel Ali.

As exclusion zones took effect, Qatar's fleet of LNG vessel sanchored off the UAE's port in Fujairah prior to the diplomatic cut-off have moved out. They are currently clustered offshore Qatar's LNG export facility at Ras Laffan.

LNG supply to Asia un impacted by Qatar crisis

MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd expects supply of liquefied natural gas to Asia to remain the same in spite of political tensions surrounding oil producer Qatar. Saudi Arabia together with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Yemen and Egypt decided to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar over its alleged support for Iran and Islamist groups. Transport links to and from Qatar via land, air and sea have also been suspended. Even worse, the export of white sugar to Qatar from the UAE and Saudi Arabia has been stopped, pressuring consumers in times where demand for sugar is high during the fasting month of Ramadhan.

“It is important to note that Qatar is one of the biggest producer of LNG in the world, producing 30 per cent of world’s supply at 79.6MT in 2016 according to the International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers. Its port of Ras Laffan is home to the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas complex, exporting 75m tons per year of cold-chilled methane in giant tankers. Qatar also exports several million barrels per day of oil and natural gas liquids.

Japan and Korea are Qatar’s top LNG export destinations. Branching out from the Middle East, Qatar’s top export destinations for LNG are mainly Japan and Korea.

Exports to both countries in 2016 each exceeded 16b cubic metres. Assuming that Saudi and UAE waters does bar Qatari ships from navigating through its waters, Qatari ships still can sail through Iranian waters followed by the Strait of Hormuz via the usual shipping lane in the Omani territory.

Even in a worst case scenario if Oman were to join the boycott against Qatar, Qatar ships can alternatively remain sailing through the Iranian sector until reaching waters of Pakistan and India. Henceforth, Qatar’s LNG exports to the Asian region will not be affected.

However, there is still a downside risk if the Arab nations plot to stop Qatari exports from entering other regions especially Asia. With Japan and Korea being the biggest customers of Qatar’s LNG, such blockade of exports will definitely affect the LNG supply in these countries.

Italian Snam in exclusive talks to acquire LNG terminal stake from Edison

Reuters reported that Italian gas group Snam is in exclusive talks with EDF's Italian unit Edison to buy a stake in a liquefied natural gas terminal in northern Italy as part of plans to develop its LNG business. Snam, controlled by state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, is looking to buy Edison's 7.3 percent stake in Terminale LNG Adriatico and the gas pipeline that connects it to Italy's gas transmission backbone.

Adriatic LNG, which has a capacity of 8 billion cubic metres per year, is 70.7 percent owned by ExxonMobil and 22 percent by Qatar Petroleum. Exxon and Qatar have a pre-emption right on Edison's stake.

Snam said that it did not comment on market speculation.

Edison said in June talks were under way to sell the stake and pipeline as well as two offices in Milan hosting its headquarters.

One of the sources said that "The idea is to wrap up the sale in the first half of July, though some slippage can't be ruled out," adding Banca IMI was advising Edison on the deal.

Snam, which makes most of its money from gas transmission, is looking to play a leading role in integrating Europe's grids and making Italy a European gas hub.

KOGAS to receive first LNG cargo under contract with US exporter Cheniere

Reuters reported that Korea Gas Corp will early next month receive its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo under a long-term supply deal with US exporter Cheniere Energy, two sources at the South Korean company said. The 74,000 tonne LNG cargo was loaded from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass export terminal in Louisiana and is scheduled to arrive at the port of Tongyeong, South Korea on July 2, one of the sources said. Both sources declined to be identified.

The 20-year supply deal, under which KOGAS will receive 2.8 million tonnes of the supercooled fuel per year from Cheniere, had long been expected to kick in this year, but its exact start time was not known in markets. The commencement of the deal could weigh on spot LNG demand in Asia as it means KOGAS will likely have less appetite for spot supplies, said a Singapore-based LNG trader.

South Korea, the world’s No.2 LNG importer, mostly ships in the commodity through state-run KOGAS. The company imports about 30 million tonnes of LNG per year, mainly from Qatar.

According to shipping data in Thomson Reuters Eikon, the SM Eagle, the vessel carrying the first Cheniere cargo, is currently en route in the Pacific Ocean after sailing through the Panama Canal following loading on June 2.

Qatar wil productie vloeibaar aardgas opvoeren

Golfstaat verwikkeld in diplomatieke rel in regio.

Qatar LNG exports not affected by Gulf boycott – Mr al-Sada

Reuters cited Energy Minister Mr Mohammed al-Sada as saying that Qatar's exports of liquefied natural gas to Japan, India, South Korea and China have not been affected by a boycott of Doha by four Arab states. He said Qatar's exports to the four Asian countries accounted for nearly three quarters of the country's total exports.

The statement said that exports to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain accounted for less than eight percent, citing comments made by the minister at an energy conference in Istanbul.

It said that Qatar remains "committed to all its agreements with its partners and is determined to maintain this status despite the illegal and unjust embargo imposed on it," referring to LNG exports.

US on track to be world's No.2 LNG exporter by end-2022 - IEA

Reuters quoted the International Energy Agency as saying that the United States is on track to have capacity to become the world's second largest exporter of liquefied natural gas by the end of 2022, just behind Australia and ahead of Qatar. Overall, global LNG export capacity would reach 650 billion cubic metres a year by the end of 2022, compared to less than 452 bcm a year in 2016.

IEA said that of that amount, Australia would have capacity to export 117.8 bcm a year of LNG, followed by the United States with 106.7 bcm a year and Qatar with 104.9 bcm a year. Australia would stay top by adding 30 bcm a year of capacity by the end of 2022 to its existing capacity, but the United States, which has seen shale gas output surge, would add about 90 bcm a year to its capacity of about 14 bcm a year now.

The report said that "By the end of our forecast period, the United States will be well on course to challenging Australia and Qatar for global leadership among LNG exporters."

However, the new LNG capacity is being added to an already well-supplied market, while demand is falling in some of the traditionally large importing nations, such as Japan, it said.

With demand expected to reach 460 bcm a year by 2022, the market would have 190 bcm a year in excess capacity, putting pressure on gas prices and discouraging new upstream investment.

Current low LNG prices are already making it tougher for exporters, and competition is loosening the typically rigid contracts that have dominated the long-distance trade.

Croatian LNG project to take key investment decision in 2018

Reuters quoted a senior official at the company managing the project as saying that Croatia is likely to take a key step towards building a floating liquefied natural gas terminal in the northern Adriatic in early 2018. Croatia, which consumes about 2.5 billion cubic metres of gas a year, hopes to supply its own market as well as central and eastern European countries from the terminal, which will receive gas from places such as Qatar and the United States.

The European Union has put the terminal on the island of Krk on its list of projects of common interest since it aims to diversify sources of supply and reduce dependence on Russian gas. Brussels is putting in EUR 101.4 million, or 27.9 percent of the project's assessed value.

Ms Andreja Ana Lopac, Leading Expert at LNG Hrvatska, said that "By the end of February next year we see a final investment decision while at the beginning of 2018 we're also expecting to have a definite figure on the level of demand."

The company was founded by state power board HEP and gas transport operator Plinacro to manage the LNG terminal project.

Ms Lopac told Reuters in an interview that "We have already chosen preferential partners for talks on investment in the terminal. Now we are also in a binding stage of the so-called open season or expressing interest for the terminal's capacities."

She said that the LNG Hrvatska expected the floating terminal to be up and running in early 2020.

She added that "At the beginning, given the current transport network capacities, the terminal will receive some 2.6 bcm of gas a year, but depending on demand and investments in transport infrastructure, it could be gradually increased first to around 3.5 bcm and eventually up to 7.0 bcm a year."

Global LNG prices stay low as oversupply dogs market

Reuters reported that the Asian market for liquefied natural gas remained subdued this week, weighed down by oversupply concerns and as the northern hemisphere exits its high demand summer season. Spot prices for Asian LNG LNG-AS were at USD 5.40 per million British thermal units, down 5 cents from a week ago. That’s more than 70 percent below the USD 20.50 per million British thermal units peak from February 2014.

A Singapore-based LNG trader said that “Summer demand had been strong at this level (of mid$5/mmBtu). It’s approaching shoulder months so prices are correcting.” LNG deamnd weakens seasonlly during the shoulder season between the northern hemisphere’s summer and winter.

However, LNG markets are also generally oversupplied, largely because of soaring output from Australia and the United States. This excess in available LNG has led buyers to demand more flexible terms for long-term supply contracts that dominate Asia.

Most long-term LNG supply contracts have fixed monthly volumes at prices pegged to crude oil, and which at USD 8.7 per mmBtu are much higher than spot prices.

Under most of these contracts, buyers have to take the agreed volumes or pay for them even if they are cancelled. Re-selling imported LNG is usually not allowed due to so-called destination clauses in the contracts.

With plentiful alternatives and lower spot prices, many large importers are demanding more flexible terms or plan to reduce their long-term contracts in order to buy more LNG at short notice in the spot market.

US to become top 3 LNG exporter in 5 years - IEA

International Energy Agency executive director Fatih Birol said in a speech at the National Press Club in Wasihington, DC, the United States will become one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas within a period of five years. The White House announced in June that the United States was determined to become a global player in exporting liquefied natural gas.

Mr Birol said that "US in our view, in five years of time will be one of the top three LNG exporters in the world, such as Australia, Qatar and the United states."

Moreover, the State Department said that the first shipment of US liquefied natural gas had arrived in Central Europe, at a terminal in Poland. The State Department explained it had worked closely with European nations to diversify the region’s energy supplies through liquefied natural gas imports.

The United States has long argued in favor of exporting liquefied natural gas to Europe, claiming it will help European allies decrease dependence on energy imports from Russia.

However, the cost of shipping liquefied natural gas from the United States to Europe remains high and requires sizable infrastructure investment.

Italian Saipem set for Novatek's Arctic LNG 2 platform contract

Reutera quoted Russian gas producer Novatek is expected to select Italy's Saipem to build offshore platforms for its second liquefied natural gas facility in the Arctic, four sources said. Novatek is aiming to produce as much LNG as the world's biggest exporter Qatar and is drawing up plans to build a second plant, known as Arctic LNG 2, on the Gydan Peninsula that juts into the Kara Sea.

One source close to the project said that "The contract is not signed yet, (but Saipem) are expected to become a subcontracting party for the Technip-Linde-NIPIGas consortium."

A second source familiar with the details confirmed that Saipem was expected to work as a subcontractor to build the LNG units, which will be gravity-based platforms near the coast held in place on the seabed with ballast.

Novatek and Saipem did not respond to requests for comment.

In May, Novatek signed an agreement with Technip, Linde and the Russian Research and Design Institute for Gas Processing (NIPIGas) to design and develop gravity-based LNG facilities for Arctic LNG 2. Novatek has also agreed to buy Linde's licence for gas liquefaction technology for the plant.

The fact that Novatek has now chosen all four main contractors suggests the Russian company is serious about proceeding with the project, which is expected to start operating in the early 2020s.

One source with direct knowledge of the matter said Novatek would start drilling its first exploratory gas wells in 2018.

Two more sources, one close to Saipem and a Western energy source, said the gravity-based structures should allow Novatek to build the plant more cheaply than its first Arctic LNG project at Yamal. They did not give an estimate of the savings.

Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project arrives at port in Finland

Sputnik reported that the first batch of concrete weight coated pipes for the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has been delivered to Finland's Koverhar port by rail, the project's operator said Koverhar will be one of the four logistics hubs for the Nord Stream 2 project, storing about 30 percent of the project's total 204,000 pipes.

Nord Stream 2 AG said in a statement that "The first concrete weight coated (CWC) pipes for the planned 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) Nord Stream 2 twin pipelines arrived today by rail at the Port of Koverhar in Hanko, Finland."

Additionally, about 124 miles of CWC pipes will be delivered by rail to Koverhar between mid-July and the third quarter of 2017 and will be stored in the port until the construction is launched in 2018, the company said, adding that the pipes are produced by Russia's Chelyabinsk Pipe-Rolling Plant (ChelPipe).

In late June, Nord Stream 2 AG's Chief Technical Officer Sergey Serdyukov said the pipemakers had already produced half of the needed pipes. In March 2016, the company said that 40 percent of the pipes would be supplied by Germany's Europipe, 33 percent by United Metallurgical Company (OMK), and 27 percent by ChelPipe.

'Per schip alleen is onvoldoende.'

    Shell

Peru LNG ships 32 cargoes in H1 2017

Platts reported that the 4.4 million mt/year Peru LNG terminal sent 32 LNG shipments in the first half of 2017, up from 31 in the same period a year earlier. Peru LNG bought 117,407 MMBtu of natural gas from Camisea pipeline operator Transportadora de Gas del Peru in the first half compared with 109,283 MMBtu the year before, the firm said in a corporate filing to Peru’s securities regulator SMV.

The USD 4 billion Peru LNG terminal, built on Peru’s south coast in 2010 to process gas from the Camisea fields, mainly ships to Shell. The company trimmed its losses to USD 4.9 million in the period compared with a USD 56.9 million loss a year earlier as revenue doubled to USD 303.8 million from USD 151.4 million a year earlier, after Henry Hub, NBP and JKM gas prices rebounded. The company also posted an USD 808,000 foreign exchange gain compared with a USD 1.2 million loss a year earlier.

The company said that it trimmed its debt to USD 1.48 billion through June 30 from USD 1.62 billion through December 31 after making senior bond payments.
