WSJ meldt:
“Right now, I think what we can say is that this is focused on the China market for Apple,” Alibaba Executive Vice Chairman Joseph Tsai said in an interview. “We are positive about the potential cooperation, but it depends on the details being worked out.”
One possible scenario is for Alibaba’s financial affiliate, which owns the Alipay electronic-payment business in China, to provide back-end services for Apple’s Apple Pay payment system, allowing iPhone users to pay with Apple Pay using the money from their Alipay accounts, Mr. Tsai said.
Asia’s largest Internet company is also talking with Apple Inc. about a possible collaboration between their payments businesses, Vice Chairman Joseph Tsai said in an interview today in Hangzhou, China.
EBay is splitting off PayPal to create two independent companies in 2015 while Alibaba is trying to capture more shoppers on tablet computers and smartphones. Alibaba’s financial affiliate Zhejiang Ant Small & Micro Financial Services Group Co., the owner of Alipay controlled by founder Jack Ma, is the biggest in China and has 17.9 million active users overseas in more than 100 countries.
“If you look at our footprint of being the largest online payment company in China, and PayPal’s position of having a very good international position, not just in the U.S. but also in some other countries, these are some complementary footprints,” Tsai said today.
