Cell phones more dangerous than cigarettes!

In March of this year, Dr Vini G. Khurana, an Australian Neurosurgeon, made news headlines declaring that, based on his research of the literature, the long-term use of cell phones was leading to brain tumors and was more dangerous to health than smoking cigarettes 13. The relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields (ELFs) and brain tumor incidence has long been a subject of concern and research in the neurosciences and oncology. However, until this last year, most studies have failed to show a clear relationship between cell phone use and brain tumors 17. Then in April of 2007, Lennart Hardell, a professor of oncology and cancer epidemiology at the University Hospital in Orebro, Sweden, along with 4 other authors published an article using case-controlled and cohort studies that clearly demonstrates that the use of cell phones for 10 years or more is associated with an increased risk for the development of glioma and acoustic neuroma ipsilateral to the side where the phone was used 3. Subsequently, in April of this year, the same authors published a meta-analysis of several studies on the topic and also concluded that there is a positive relationship between long-term cell phone use and ipsilateral glioma and acoustic neuroma 4. Needless to say, such findings are alarming. Cell phones are ubiquitous in our society, and the numbers and use of such devices have increased exponentially since being introduced in the mid-1980s. Furthermore, cell phone use by teenagers and even preteens has also grown to become commonplace. Obviously, exposure to ELF by cell phone use in the young might even pose a greater threat because the changes caused by such exposure might well be greater in the developing brain. However, it does not end there. Other reports by Hardell et al indicate that the use of wireless handsets in cordless home phones poses the same risk as cell phones 5, 6.

It should be true, if the forgoing findings are accurate, that there has been an increase in the incidence of brain tumors over the last 25 years or so. There are a number of published reports on the topic indicating a definite increase in the incidence of brain tumors, particularly malignant forms such as glioblastoma multiforme 1, 2, 7, 8, 14, 16. Although some studies indicate a stable tumor rate 9 including during the years after cell phone introduction 15. An increase in nerve sheath tumors has also been reported 8. The statistical increase of tumors found in these studies are somewhat modified, in some authors' opinions, because of the improved technology of diagnostic imaging, especially computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, both introduced and advanced in the same era 1, 14. However, the fact is that the incidence of gliomas, especially the more malignant varieties, is increasing based on the now numerous reports warrants action on the issue.

Hardell and his colleagues, along with other scientists, have formed the Bioinitiative Working Group 11, which appears to be a spin-off of another group, the Bioelectromagnetics Society 10. The mission of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, as posted on their Web site, is to be the international resource for excellence in scientific research, knowledge, and understanding of the interaction of electromagnetic fields with biological systems. The Bioinitiative Group has produced a report called: “A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standard for Electromagnetic Fields (ELF and RF ((Radio Frequency)))” 12. In that report, evidence for childhood leukemia caused by exposure to power lines is addressed as well as the issue of gliomas and acoustic neuromas caused by cell phone and cordless phone use. They state, “In summary we conclude that our review yielded a consistent pattern of an increased risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma after 10 (or more) years mobile phone use. We conclude that (the) current standard for exposure to microwaves during mobile phone use is not safe for long-term brain tumor risk and needs to be revised” 12.

The report further states, “The existing FCC and international limits for public and occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation are not protective of public health. New biologically based public and occupational exposures are recommended to address bioeffects and potential adverse health effects of chronic exposure. These effects are now widely reported to occur at exposure levels significantly below most current national and international limits” 12.

It therefore behests our scientific societies to address this issue. There is one caveat; that is, only one group, Hardell et al, have carried out actual studies pertaining to the issue and found a clear relationship between brain tumors and ELF. No other long-term studies have been carried out; Dr Khurana's warning is based on a review of literature only. It seems that a cooperative effort by both the scientific community and state governing bodies will be needed. Some spearhead is now necessary in view of the magnitude and seriousness of the situation.

Branson Warns On Mobile Phones After Banker Dies

    Sunday Mirror
    11/22/98

    Auteur: : Cherry Norton

To many, the life of Michael von Clemm, a brilliant banker who travelled the world, was enviable. But now his friends are wondering whether his untimely death was caused by the curses of modern executives, long-haul flights and mobile phones. Von Clemm, who will be honoured by the unveiling of a bust by Eddie George, governor of the Bank of England, in Caruary Wharf, east London, next month, was an early and constant user of mobile phones. He flew on Concorde once a week and had persuaded his dentist to make him a full-length lead blanket to shield him from high-altitude radiation on these trips. Last week Richard Branson, one of his friends, warned his staff of the dangers of radiation from mobile phones. He believes they may have contributed to von Clemm's death from a brain tumour. ''He was one of the first to have a mobile phone and used it all the time. The particular type of tumour he had and its position was consistent with where the phone would be,'' said Branson, founder of the Virgin business group. ''I went to dinner with him just before he died and he said his surgeons were convinced that his extensive use of a mobile phone had caused his tumour.''

Scientists: Cell Phones cause Kidney Failures

Mobile phones were at the centre of a new health scare last night after claims they can seriously damage the heart and kidneys.

Earlier reports have already linked their use to brain tumours, headaches and premature ageing. Now scientists say exposure to the phones' low-level radiation causes red blood cells to leak haemoglobin. The build-up of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body, can lead to heart disease and kidney stones.

The findings will heighten alarm over the safety of mobile phones which are used by more than 13 million people in Britain. In the latest research, scientists exposed samples of blood to varying degrees of microwave radiation for periods between ten to 60 hours.

Even at lower levels than those emitted by mobile phones, the cells leaked haemoglobin. Professor Edward Tuddenham, a haemotologist at the Imperial College Medical School based in Hammersmith Hospital, West London, said the findings were worrying and he wanted to see the study followed up. 'The accumulation of haemoglobin in the body could result in heart disease or kidney stones,' he warned.

The Department of Health said yesterday that the new study - carried out at the European Research Institute for Electronic Components in Bucharest - would be examined by a Government-appointed committee due to report on phone safety next year.

However, the Cambridge based consumer group Powerwatch said with evidence of the risks growing the government needed to do more.

'We are still very much investigating the biological consequences of mobile phones. But there certainly seems to be enough laboratory studies now saying there are effects, to be very concerned,' said a spokesman.

Last month, scientists at Sweden's Lund University found that two minutes of exposure to emissions from mobile phones can disable a safety barrier in the blood causing proteins and toxins to leak into the brain.

This can increase the chances of developing diseases such as Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's. The Federation of the Electronics Industry yesterday repeated its claim that there was no conclusive proof that the phones were a health hazard. A spokesman said mobiles operated within strict guidelines on radiation emissions. 'The consensus of scientific opinion is that there is no consistent evidence that mobile phones operating within these guidelines have any adverse health effects,' he said. //12.28.08

Engeland: Organisatie waarschuwt voor WiFi in scholen.
maandag, 01 december 2008 - Dossier: Internationale berichten

    Bron: Wifiinschools.org December 2008

    WiFi in schools

Recent years have seen a huge increase in the number of UK schools installing wireless computer networks (WiFi, WLAN), wireless white boards, and similar devices.

These exciting technologies offer freedom to move around the school with laptops and are easier and sometimes cheaper to install than wired systems. Schools have invested money in the technologies, pupils like them and they have become a part of school culture.

However, schools, parents and staff are often unaware of the enormous number of scientific studies now published which suggest that mobile and wireless technologies which emit pulsed microwave radiation may pose a health risk, especially to children. The science is published in scientific journals, often only available to subscribers. The concerns of scientists and scientific studies are not always communicated to the public. Thus schools rely upon the statements about the use of wireless technologies in schools made by the UK Health Protection Agency and BECTA.

This web site aims to provide more information about the science (Scientific Research and Health Issues for Schools), about International Concerns and the Precautionary Approach which some people are now taking with regard to these technologies. The hope is for this information to become more widely known, so that parents and schools will be better equipped to make informed decisions about which technologies schools should be choosing for children and teenagers to use. For a 'quick look' see Key points for schools.
    A safe place for children

Children have to attend school. Home tutoring is rarely a practical option, and it fails to provide the social education that is gained by being part of a large group.

Schools need to provide safe environments for all children, irrespective of their susceptibilities to different diseases or genetic make ups.

Children deserve a safe environment to learn, play, develop and thrive. Many households now use some form of mobile or wireless technology, and this is their choice. Others have chosen not to use wireless technologies where there are wired alternatives. In school children have no choice about their exposure. Schools therefore have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for all children whilst in their care.

Ierse onderzoekers: Bewijs van schadelijkheid van mobiele telefonie.

    Proof of mobile health risk

Doctors today claim to have found the first proof of health problems caused by mobile phones.

They say up to five per cent of the population could be suffering headaches, mood swings and hearing problems caused by radiation from handsets.

Experts are advising people - especially children - to limit their use of phones if they experience headaches or other symptoms.

The research, by the Irish Doctors Environmental Association (IDEA), was carried out on 16 people who had complained of symptoms from using mobile phones and were particularly sensitive to electromagnetic radiation.

The 16 were studied over several months. They were examined by doctors, filled in detailed questionnaires charting their use of mobile phones, and underwent medical tests including blood and liver analysis.

It was found 13 suffered symptoms including nausea, headaches and dizziness which researchers believe are a clear indication of radiation. IDEA chairman Dr Philip Michael said: ''This is causing disabilities in a large section of the population.

''We are working on funding for a far larger study which will use blind testing to prove beyond doubt that mobile phones are responsible, but we believe the evidence is now overwhelming.

''These problems can get very difficult to deal with - we had one person in our study who was basically confined to their house because of the symptoms.''

He advised anyone suffering from the symptoms the study describes to limit the time they spend on their mobile, and to try to stay away from mobile phone masts.

The research was this week presentedto a select committee of Irish MPs, who, it is hoped, will back plans for further research.

Other experts in the field said they were not surprised by the results of the study. Dr Michael Maier of Imperial College said more research was needed, adding: ''There is so much anecdotal evidence I think more findings along these lines are inevitable.

''The biggest problem is that it is hard to measure any effects as people use their phones so differently.

''But the brain is an electrical instrument, and the frequency of radiation produced is very close to that used in the brain, so it's no big surprise to find a phone is interfering with that frequency, causing headaches, nausea and the other problems.''

Last month experts advising the Government warned that children under eight should not be given mobile phones because of the potential health risks.

Sir William Stewart, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, said: ''I don't think we can put our hands on our hearts and say mobile phones are safe. If there are risks, and we think there may be risks, then the people who are going to be most affected are children.''

That study, by the National Radiological Protection Board, found no firm conclusion could be reached on the impact of mobile phones.

IDEA is made up of 30 leading Irish doctors, and is affiliated with the World Health Organisation. It is part of a group awarded the Nobel prize for physics in 1985. Members include Dr Patrick Hillery, the ex-President of Ireland and an EU commissioner.

Brisbane: Congres over vruchtbaarheid; nieuwe studie over DNA beschadiging bij zaadcellen.
woensdag, 22 oktober 2008 - Dossier: Internationale berichten

Mobile phone radiation fries sperm - study
    By Tamara McLean
    October 20, 2008

MEN who talk for hours on their mobile phones could be jeopardising their chance of fathering a child, Australian research suggests.

An experiment on semen revealed evidence of DNA damage after 16 hours of exposure to radiation similar to the output of a mobile phone.

The preliminary study, presented at a fertility conference in Brisbane today, is the first of its kind, and supports US research showing heavy mobile phone users have up to 40 per cent lower sperm counts than lighter users.

Researchers at the University of Newcastle built a device to irradiate sperm at the same radio frequency as mobile telephone calls.

Professor John Aitken, director of the university's Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Development, said they were able to accurately identify high levels of DNA fragmentation in the sperm.

''After 16 hours exposure, there was clear evidence of DNA damage,'' Prof Aitken said.

''This is a very early finding from our analysis, but it does raise concerns.''

DNA damage in spermatozoa has been associated with decreased fertility, increased risk of miscarriage and various kinds of disease in offspring, including childhood cancer, and a number of neurological disorders such as autism, bipolar disorder and spontaneous schizophrenia.

In the study, damage was caused by oxidative stress - when the generation of free radicals exceeds the body's own anti-oxidant defence mechanisms.

Prof Aitken said it was well known that sperm DNA fragmentation was predominantly triggered by oxidative stress which may arise from infection, smoking or older age, but there had been little research about the link with mobile phones.

Unsaturated fatty acids in foods such as margarine were also known to trigger free radicals and potential oxidative stress, he said.

''We also suspect components of acne treatment may give rise to potential free radical effects, but we have yet to find a dermatologist willing to participate in such a study,'' he said.

The team said if oxidative stress caused DNA damage to sperm, anti-oxidant treatments might provide a cure.

A recent German study suggested that seat warmers fitted in many luxury model cars may also be damaging sperm by raising scrotum temperature above optimal semen production conditions.
